Encouraged to record a new episode by my friends and students, here is an off the cuff episode about assertiveness in nursing and how it relates to gender roles and culture. I'd love to hear what you think @GenderMHNurse on twitter.
What are the Gender Recognition Act 2004 and Equality Act 2010? Who are they here for? And do they really work? These are just some of the questions answered in this episode of On The Agender with Ella Guerin. Both pieces of legislation are in place to protect and support marginalised people in the UK but in entirely different ways. With recent suggestions that the UK government plan to ignore overwhelming evidence from the GRA reform consultation, it is important that we remember why this reform is so crucial to supporting trans lives. HAPPY PRIDE 2020 TO YOU ALL!!

In this episode we look into identity development and whether children and teenagers are old enough to know their gender identity. As we are also in the middle of a global pandemic, I also give you some advice for supporting your mental health in this new and challenging time
Taking a look at current examples of gender policing, this episode covers the potential changes to USA laws that allows employers to discriminate against LGBT+ people, and how we can change our attitudes around toilets to let everyone pee in peace
As a clinician, it is essential to adapt your practice to the needs of each of your patients. This episode is based on the first part of the LGBT+ health needs awareness training I am running nationally for Priory Healthcare this September 2019. It looks at how males and females have different health needs, and how gender can also impact the health needs of men and women. Although the episode focuses on cisgender and heterosexual people, we identify some of the ways sex and gender can affect your health risks and outcomes. Please be aware that some examples follow stereotypes around typically masculine or feminine attributes or roles. This is due to the commonality of people performing those, and this can of course affect those of other genders.
Can you think of any other specific healthcare needs of males, females, men or women? Do you have any questions about topics covered in the episode? You can tweet @GenderMHNurse or post on the facebook page On The Agender
In the remainder of the 90 minute workshop, I look into the healthcare needs of intersex, non-binary and transgender people. With these groups often marginalised and misunderstood, they will typically have poorer health outcomes and experience specific healthcare needs. Furthermore, sexual orientation is considered as being LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual or other non-heterosexual orientations) can also change the conditions you are more or less likely to face. If you would like to learn more about training on LGBT+ health needs, or other topics related to LGBT+ health feel free to get in contact via twitter @GenderMHNurse or facebook On The Agender!

For Mental Health Awareness Week this year, I want to draw our attention to the links between gender dysphoria and mental illness. With this years MHAW theme being body image, we consider the aspects of gender dysphoria related to body image and how this can impact on mental wellbeing, and how to support people experiencing mental illness.

Gender shouldn't affect our health, but it does. Gender can impact our access to healthcare, health promotion through education, and the services we can access. Not only that, but gender can influence the conditions we are more likely to have, and the outcomes for our health following treatment. Among trans people, these gender-based health inequalities are only greater in range and severity. In this episode, Ella explains some of the more common health inequalities faced by transgender people. This episode also offers ways in which allies both those working in healthcare services, and those not, to minimise this disparity. Marsha P. Johnson lead an incredible life as an activist. Marsha was highly marginalised as a black trans woman throughout her life. She also faced prejudice for sex work, mental illness, being HIV positive and being homeless for much of her adult life. For many years, she was a highly influential figure in LGBT+ rights activism, holding a significant impact on the Stonewall riots of 1969, a pivotal event in queer history. What better way to celebrate LGBT+ History Month than with this queen?!

The second episode in the Hormones miniseries takes a look at oestrogen. We discuss what it is, where it is produced and how it works in bodies both assigned female at birth (afab) and assigned male at birth (amab). Hormones can cause characteristics (breasts, body hair, voice pitch etc) that can either reinforce gender identity, or cause dysphoria.

Understanding gender also requires us to better understand sex. I'm not talking about HAVING sex sadly (maybe another episode?) but instead our biological sex. Not everyone is born male or female sex, some people are intersex instead. This episode will help you know what intersex actually means and how being intersex may impact someone's life. Your host Ella Guerin @GenderMHNurse explores the different ways a person can be intersex, and what this can mean for gender. In today's episode, I look into the use of pronouns in daily life and how this may impact on trans and non-binary people. Pronouns for a significant part of how we are recognised by others within gendered society, therefore by acknowledging this significance, we can integrate correct use of gendered pronouns into our speech. We will also think about how to turn off that pronoun autopilot that tells us to guess at pronouns based on someone's presentation. @GenderMHNurse

Is gender more complex than the binary of man and woman? Where does our understanding of gender come from? How does this gender spectrum work? These are the questions On The Agender today. With your host Ella Guerin @GenderMHNurse, we will consider the diversity of genders people identify as including non-binary, agender and gender neutral, and what these terms really mean. So many are confused by terms like non-binary that have become so much more common. We are expected to know what they mean, yet no one has really explained them! This episode does just that so that you can understand gender and transgender identities more easily https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2017/01/how-science-helps-us-understand-gender-identity/
