Rewind to 2014. Curley, who hails from Columbia, Maryland, was working on her master’s degree at John Hopkins and working at Teach For America, recruiting Black teachers in classrooms with majority Black students. Believing from her experience as a teacher in Baltimore that Black educators made a significant difference in Black students’ lives, Curley was in that role for three years. In that time, she became very familiar with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
That work made her a coveted recruit for Google. The hiring process took all of three weeks, Curley said. In less than a month, she got an offer letter and moved to New York from Baltimore.

Nearly 7,000 sailors still need to take the vaccine, according to the Navy figures.
Troops in the other service branches are also under the gun. The Air Force faces the closest deadline for inoculation on Nov. 2. About 91% of active-duty airmen have been at least partially vaccinated, according to the service's latest data on Oct. 12.
The Navy and Marine Corps deadline for active-duty troops is Nov. 28, and the Army deadline is Dec. 15.

One THV11 VERIFY viewer wrote in, asking, “Is it legal for a primary care physician to stop seeing patients who he has treated for 10+ years for not getting the experimental COVID vaccine?”
The answer is yes.
Our sources are Attorney Cara Boyd-Connors and a law professor at the University of Arkansas, Danielle Weatherby.
Attorney Boyd pointed out that the COVID-19 vaccine is not "experimental," in that the shot has been recommended and approved by the CDC.
"As far as I know under the law, there is nothing that precludes a physician from terminating a patient relationship as long as it is not due to any discriminatory reasons, i.e. race, sex, or sexual orientation,” Boyd said.
And according to Weatherby, a private care doctor has more leeway in deciding who they treat and can deny non-emergency care if their patient isn't being cooperative or following recommendations.
"There are certainly reasons that would make the doctor’s refusal to treat discriminatory, but refusal to vaccinate—unless it’s based on a religious objection, which gets much more complicated— is currently not one of them for a private doctor.”
We can verify, yes, it is legal for a primary care doctor to stop treating a patient for refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

State Police Col. Lamar Davis, who's taking over Louisiana's premier law enforcement agency amid recent controversies of a Black man dying in police custody and racist intra-agency emails, said he doesn't believe systemic racism exists within the department.
Davis, who is Black, also said he's never been the personal target of racism within the department.
"I base my beliefs on facts," Davis said this week in an interview with USA Today Network. "Until someone provides facts showing systemic racism, I tell you that has not been presented to me."
Davis replaces former Col. Kevin Reeves, who retired last week following a series of racial controversies involving the agency.

Ahmaud Arbery’s death was one of multiple flash points this year that’s made people question whether or not the foundation of America’s justice system is equality or racism. Three Mississippi police officers have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Black man last year, according to a recently unsealed indictment.
A Hinds County grand jury indicted the officers in the January 2019 death of George Robinson, 62, according to the Aug. 5 indictment.
It accuses the officers — Desmond Barney, Lincoln Lampley and Anthony Fox — with "willfully, unlawfully and feloniously” causing Robinson's death, The Clarion Ledger reported. All three worked for the Jackson Police Department at the time.
The indictment alleges that the three officers removed Robinson from his vehicle, body-slammed him on the pavement and repeatedly struck him in the head and chest.
Robinson died from bleeding on the brain caused by blunt force trauma to the head, Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said shortly after his death.
Neighbor Connie Bolton told Mississippi Today that officers hit Robinson and slammed him down while seeking suspects in the fatal shooting of a pastor who had been shot in a robbery in front of his church.
Francis Springer, one of the attorneys representing the officers, said that “evidence will show that the officers are not guilty.”
"These officers did exactly what they are trained to do and used an appropriate level of force,” Springer told The Clarion Ledger on Friday.
The three officers were placed on administrative leave as the department’s Internal Affairs Division and the FBI investigated the case, The Clarion Ledger said. The officers were later reinstated, though Fox and Barney currently work for the Clinton Police Department.
After the officers posted bond at a court hearing and were released Thursday, several police officers met them outside and prayed with them on the courthouse lawn, WLBT-TV reported.
Robinson's relatives said they were grateful that charges were brought against the officers.
“For us, the charges prove that George’s life mattered and no one deserves to die the way he did," the family said in a statement obtained by news outlets. “We are grateful that the District Attorney has taken this action. We have cooperated with the investigation in every way and will continue to do so until we finally get justice for our beloved George.”

The BBC has apologized for airing an uncensored racial slur in a news segment, after initially defending the use of the word in a report broadcast last month. Social Affairs Correspondent Fiona Lamdin used the N-word in a segment on an apparently racially aggravated assault in the city of Bristol, sparking more than 18,600 complaints from viewers. Tony Hall, director general of the UK's public service broadcaster, apologized in an email to all BBC staff Sunday and said the segment "ended up creating distress amongst many people." "The BBC now accepts that we should have taken a different approach at the time of broadcast and we are very sorry for that," Hall wrote in the email, which the BBC shared with CNN. "We will now be strengthening our guidance on offensive language across our output."

When the CARES Act passed in March, Congress authorized billions of federal dollars for aid programs as a lifeline to farmers who have faced serious economic strain from the pandemic.
Any farmer applying for a loan must first be approved by the Farm Service Agency, which, along with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), has historically excluded Black-operated farms from accessing federal aid, foreclosed on businesses unable to pay back loans, and delayed access to previously approved funds for years.

A black radio host accused Roger Stone of using a racial slur during a live broadcast Saturday while discussing whether President Trump’s longtime confidant deserved to have his prison sentence commuted.
During the interview with Morris O’Kelly on KFI-AM (640) and iHeartRadio, while Stone was apparently having trouble hearing the host, a voice that sounds like Stone mutters about “arguing with this negro.”
Stone denied using the word on the air, telling O’Kelly, “you’re out of your mind.”

Minnesota's pardons board voted 3-0 to pardon Max Mason, one of several traveling circus workers accused in the 1920 case. Walz, a member of the board, called it “100 years overdue” and said Minnesota for too long believed that lynchings “happened (only) in the Southern states.”
“There is a direct line between what happened with Max Mason ... to what happened to George Floyd on the streets of Minneapolis,” the Democratic governor said, referring to the May 25 death that has become a flashpoint in a national movement against police brutality and racism.
Attorney General Keith Ellison and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Lori Skjerven Gildea also voted to grant the pardon.
“(Mason's) criminal justice process, from his first encounter with the police all the way through to his parole, was tainted and fairly characterized as racist and racially biased,” Jerry Blackwell, the attorney who wrote the pardon application, told the board. “With nothing but the accusation and claim of innocence by a white woman and her boyfriend.”
The allegation came from a young man who attended the circus with 19-year-old Irene Tusken in June 1920 and who said six workers forced the couple at gunpoint into a ravine and raped Tusken, according to a case summary prepared for the board.
The man did not mention any attack when dropping off Tusken at her parents’ house but related the story to his father the next morning, the summary said.
Several workers, including Mason, were arrested, but neither Tusken nor the young man could identify any of them as alleged attackers, and a family doctor found no evidence of sexual assault of Tusken, the summary said. Mason was allowed to travel to the circus’ next city but was re-arrested the next day and eventually identified as an attacker by Tusken and the young man.
Thirteen other men had been jailed, and three — Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson and Isaac McGhie — were dragged from their cells and lynched by a white mob the night of June 15.

Thirty years ago, on Jan. 4, 1990, Charles Stuart leaped to his death off the Tobin Bridge in Boston after he was named the prime suspect in his pregnant wife’s murder. The suicide put an end to an ugly hoax that unleashed months of fear and fury from Boston’s officials, police, the media and the public.
The story of Charles and Carol Stuart, who were described by Boston media as a “Camelot couple” leading an idyllic life in the suburbs, was a national sensation. It’s been covered over the past 30 years in newspapers, magazines and TV shows, including an episode in CNN’s 2019 series, “The Dead Wives Club.”
Charles falsely claimed that a black man jumped into his car one night in October 1989 and shot him and his wife, Carol, after they attended a Lamaze class at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the city’s Mission Hill neighborhood. The supposed gunman, described by Stuart as an African American man in a track suit with a raspy voice, then shot Charles in the side. Carol was taken back to the hospital where she gave birth to a premature son, Christopher, and then died on the operating room table. The injured baby died 17 days later.

For example, between 1719 and 1734, the city state of Bern as well as two banking houses “Malacrida” and “Samuel Muller” held shares in the speculative South Sea Company which kept slave deposits on Barbados and shipped some 20,000 slaves from Africa to the New World.
Slavery also played a role in the establishment of Switzerland's textile industry.
The Swiss government, it is noted, has always made the case that Switzerland as a nation state has never been involved in slavery nor been a colonial power.

When a disruptive student called him the n-word multiple times, Wisconsin high school security assistant Marlon Anderson repeated the epithet while condemning its use. For that, Anderson said, he lost his job.
Days after the exchange between the security guard and the student, both of whom are black, the Madison School District told Anderson he was being dismissed. Officials pointed to a zero-tolerance policy on employee use of racial slurs, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The firing sparked outrage inside West High School and far outside it. As students staged a walkout to protest the decision, former U.S. education secretary Arne Duncan blasted it as “more evidence our country still can’t handle issues of race and racism.” Amid the backlash came a conversation about the effectiveness of a district policy that forbids the use of offensive language, no matter the context.

James Blackmon, 66, is brought into the courtroom for an innocence hearing on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019 the first day of the three-day hearing in Raleigh, N.C. A three-judge panel has ruled Blackmon, convicted of killing a North Carolina college student 40 years ago is innocent. Rep. Ilhan Omar said Americans should be “more fearful of white men” when discussing the threat of “jihadist terrorism.”
The Minnesota progressive was asked in a resurfaced interview with Al Jazeera from August 2018 about the rise of Islamophobia, citing the attacks that killed eight people on a Manhattan bike path in 2017 and the 2015 terror attack in San Bernardino, Calif., that killed 14.
“I would say our country should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country,” Omar answered.
“And so if fear was the driving force of policies to keep America safe — Americans safe inside of this country — we should be profiling, monitoring, and creating policies to fight the radicalization of white men,” she continued.

President Trump took a lot of heat from his family over the racist chants at a campaign rally in North Carolina on Wednesday. He heard from first lady Melania Trump, his daughter Ivanka and Vice President Mike Pence.
Mr. Trump on Thursday disavowed the chants of "send her back" and said he tried to stop it. "Well, number one, I think I did, I started speaking very quickly," he said.
But the video tells a different story. The president stands in silence for nearly 15 seconds, looking around the arena. When Mr. Trump resumed his speech, he made no mention of the chant, which started after he attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar. The rally left Republicans once again answering for the president.

They looked at nearly 5 million instances of children entering foster care between 2000 and 2017 and analyzed how many times foster children were removed from their homes due to their parents' drug use each year.

For many, fentanyl is a uniquely American problem — one that primarily stems from the over-prescription of opioids to treat pain symptoms. Others may consider it to be a North American issue, as Canada has also been hit hard by the scourge. Indeed, powerful organized crime groups, especially ones in Mexico, have recognized the potential for vast profits in the fentanyl trade in the two countries. But closer inspection reveals a growing ripple in the use of fentanyl (a term I use generically to refer not only to fentanyl itself but also to carfentanil and other fentanyl-related substances) across the globe. At present, the phenomenon outside the United States and Canada remains tied to sales on the dark web and supplies that arrive by mail, but the same factors that have made fentanyl attractive to Mexican cartels will also make it appealing to other organized crime groups around the world, especially those already involved in the opiate trade. In such a situation, security and health authorities everywhere will have their work cut out for them as they seek to hold back a drug that is cheap and easy to make, easy to transport and easy to sell.

The South Bend, Ind., mayor has dubbed this set of proposals the "Douglass Plan," after pioneering abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The proposals come as Buttigieg continues to field questions about his lackluster polling numbers among African Americans and the state of race relations in South Bend, where a black resident was recently shot by a white police officer. Since the shooting, Buttigieg has said he's "determined" to improve race relations in the city.
The campaign describes the plan as a "A Comprehensive Investment in the Empowerment of Black America." The plan is broadly divided into seven areas: health care, education, entrepreneurship, criminal justice, housing, environmental justice, and voting rights.
"We have lived in the shadow of systemic racism for too long,” Buttigieg said in a statement. “We've seen a rise in white nationalism, an economic gap between black and white workers that grows instead of shrinks, and worse health outcomes for black Americans, particularly new mothers, that should make us all wonder how the richest country on earth can allow this to happen under our noses.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is a direct descendant of two slave owners in his family line, according to an NBC report published Monday.
James McConnell and Richard Daley, two of the Kentucky Republican’s great-great-grandfathers, owned at least 14 slaves in Limestone County, Ala., NBC reported, citing 19th-century census records. All but two of the slaves were female.
McConnell, who grew up in the area of Limestone County, has said he opposes reparations, the process of giving compensation to the descendants of slaves. The idea of reparations has recently animated the political debate surrounding racial injustice.
“I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago, when none of us currently living are responsible, is a good idea,” he said in June before a House committee held hearings on the matter. “We’ve tried to deal with our original sin of slavery by fighting a civil war, by passing landmark civil rights legislation. We’ve elected an African American president.”

A new bill would calculate potential costs of reparations — and by Yahoo Finance estimates, these could reach as high as $17.1 trillion.
Last week, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties held the first hearing in a decade on H.R. 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act. The bill was first introduced in 1989 by former Congressman John Conyers (D-MI). Conyers reintroduced the bill each year until his retirement in 2017 — and each year, the bill languished in Congress.
The bill’s focus was not to pass reparations, but to research the impact slavery had on black Americans and develop proposals for redress.
‘Payments are not the focus of H.R. 40’ The subject of reparations has remained a political hot potato, with presidential candidates Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Beto O’Rourke and Julian Castro supporting some form of reparations. But while the Democratic-controlled House is willing to hear the bill, it seems likely that a bill on reparations will die in the Senate where Republicans have a majority. When asked about the hearing, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said he opposed the measure, given that “not one of us currently living are responsible” for slavery.

The video of that interview made the rounds last week as a Congressional sub-committee held hearings on H.R.40, loosely referred to as the “Reparations” bill. The proposal is quite modest. It does not call for the federal government to write a big check to black Americans by way of atonement for slavery. Rather, “This bill establishes the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans. The commission shall examine slavery and discrimination in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present and recommend appropriate remedies.”

Eric Jack Logan, a father and resident of South Bend, Indiana, was shot and killed by a police officer on June 16, 2019. He was 54.
Police Sgt. Ryan O’Neill was wearing a body camera, but it was turned off at the time of the shooting. O’Neill says he was investigating possible car break-ins in the middle of the night and that he encountered Logan holding a knife. He says Logan refused to drop it and that O’Neill feared for his own safety.
But Logan’s family disagrees with O’Neill’s testament. They say Logan would never have threatened a police officer and that he does not have a violent criminal history. A special prosecutor is being brought in to oversee an independent investigation.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., reintroduced a bill on the campaign trail this week, which could mean $57 million in tax refunds for married LGBT couples. The Refund Equality Act, which was originally introduced in 2017, would allow LGBT couples who were married prior to the 2013 Supreme Court strike-down of the Defense of Marriage Act in U.S. v. Windsor to amend tax returns from the time that they were married. Prior to 2013, 10 states had legalized same-sex marriage, but were required to file their federal taxes as individuals. No monetary compensation for ADOS.

A 32-year-old Shreveport man was arrested Saturday night and charged with the slaying of a mailman who was making deliveries on his route in Shreveport's South Highlands neighborhood.
Michael Gentry, of the 1100 block of Dudley Street, was charged with one count of second-degree murder of Antonio Williams.
He was booked at the Shreveport City Jail following interviews with investigators. His bond is set at $250,000.

The Curtis Flowers Case In Mississippi “The state’s decision to strike five of the six black prospective jurors,” Justice Kavanaugh wrote, “is further evidence suggesting that the state was motivated in substantial part by discriminatory intent.” During jury selection, Mr. Evans questioned black prospective jurors particularly closely, asking them an average of 29 questions each. He asked the 11 white jurors who were eventually seated an average of one question each.

During a fundraising event in New York, the Democratic presidential candidate recounted being a member of the Senate in the 1970s with southern Democrats who opposed civil rights and desegregation. He specifically named Mississippi Sen. James Eastland and Georgia Sen. Herman Talmadge, who Biden called "one of the meanest guys I ever knew."
"I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland. He never called me 'boy,' he always called me 'son,' " Biden told donors.
"Well guess what? At least there was some civility. We got things done," Biden said. "We didn't agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it finished."
"But today, you look at the other side and you're the enemy. Not the opposition, the enemy. We don't talk to each other anymore," he said.

A teacher charged with sexually abusing 28 first-grade girls and touching dozens more manipulated them so much they "would compete for his attention." He even told one girl he would marry her when she got older, according to a Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell.
Video recorded inside the gymnasium where 25-year-old Austin Hopkins taught P.E. shows him sexually abusing 28 girls and touching 88 total over a three-month period, Fornshell said Monday.
“They all took place inside the gymnasium area … we have video of all of them," Fornshell said as he announced Hopkins' indictment on 36 counts of gross sexual imposition.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, throws cold water on that dream. A new set of researchers replicated part of the 2014 study’s findings: That is, from 1999 to 2010, it’s true that the introduction of medical-marijuana laws was associated with a decline in opioid-overdose deaths. But when the researchers included states that introduced laws between 2010 and 2017, the direction of the relationship reversed. Instead of a reduction in opioid overdoses, medical marijuana was associated with a 23 percent increase in overdose deaths.

A total of 10,571 racially-motivated hate crimes against children -- an average of 29 a day -- were recorded by police in 2017-18, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) found. Toddlers and even babies were among those targeted.

On July 7, 2016, Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed and fired upon a group of police officers in Dallas, Texas, killing five officers and injuring nine others. Two civilians were also wounded. Johnson was an Army Reserve Afghan War veteran who was reportedly angry over police shootings of black men and stated that he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers. The shooting happened at the end of a protest against the police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, which had occurred in the preceding days.
