Dr. Lori Asztalos is a dermatologist who doesn’t fit the mold. Because she matched into dermatology, you could assume she had the PERFECT application with top board scores.
But that isn’t her story; she wasn’t AOA and had an average board score.
Dr. Asztalos completed two years of pediatric residency until she decided to switch specialties and go for one of the most competitive specialties in medicine: dermatology.
She dropped out of her pediatric residency to begin a new endeavor and apply to residency AGAIN, but this time to dermatology.
…but she didn’t listen and paved her own path. And she made it!

We're surrounded by over-achievers and perfectionists. The further we go in our training, the stronger the competition.
Expectations rise and the room for error minimizes. . .
It can be easy to fall for the idea that we should always be on the top of our game because of course, "I never struggle."
But the reality is, the day to day "behind the scenes" reality is like this half finished puzzle with pieces all over the table and one in your hand as you try to figure out where in the world to put the next piece.
When life gets overwhelming, it's time to learn how to push through.

Sometimes, it feels like all you have time for is your medical training as if your life completely revolves around your coursework and call schedule.
And often times, it does.
Schedules are determined by the rotation your own, upcoming exams, and that 'lovely' call schedule that interferes with your sleep.
(Wait, what even is sleep?)
It can be hard to carve out time for anything outside of medicine, which leads to the question:
Is it possible to be more than a doctor or is that all you have time for?
Dr. Emily Jacobs is an Obstetrics & Gynecology resident who is BUSY! When she's not in the OR or seeing consults, she's taking care of her 18 month old son.
You shouldn't have to justify how you want to live your life, but in this field, we can sometimes feel judged . . .

The personal statement is a sore spot for many causing frustration, annoyance, and just plain avoidance. Unfortunately, it's a required component of many applications. Ugh!
I’ve endured this “fun” task at many phases of my training from college to applying to residency, and I totally get it - it’s tough! Despite your growing to-do list, you’re tasked with writing a jaw-dropping statement that the admissions committee "hasn't heard before" as if you don’t have enough pressure already…
Throw in the towel? Hang on there!
Don’t let frustration hold you back. Rather than filling space with words to write an essay that’s “good enough”, use this as an opportunity to strengthen your application.
