Dr. Karen Leitner is a physician coach who shares 10 ways (and other incredible tips!) to make your day easier as a woman doctor. Some are “small” changes that you can start doing today and watch it make a BIG impact on your work day and possibly even happiness.

Overview:

  1. Don’t check your email during clinic hours.
  2. Say thank you for waiting instead of, “I’m sorry I’m late”.
  3. Tell patients that you’re happy to see them.
  4. Take a 20 second pause in between each patient.
  5. You did not create the system…It’s a waste of your time to let the patient complain to you about it. Give them the manager or CEO card. (We get to agree with the patient.)
  6. Treat yourself like a cranky toddler. If you’re hungry, eat! Don’t run off to see the next patient or finish a chart.
  7. Pee when you have to! (Why do we walk around with overfilled bladders!)
  8. Instead of fixating on what you’re not doing well and the more that you have to do, focus on getting 1% better.
  9. Assume that everyone is doing their best and you don’t know how well you would do if you had their genetics, their upbringing, or their political beliefs. (Brene Brown)
  10. Try to remember why you decided to be a doctor in the first place.

Malpractice insurance. Two words that may sound boring but are incredibly important for every doctor and trainee to know about. There are certain things that we have in place to protect our career (and finances) and HOPE that we never have to use it. But unfortunatley, many doctors do.

About 1 in 3 doctors are sued in their career. 1 in 3!!!

Those are not odds that you want to bet on. It's important to know how to protect yourself and it starts with knowing what's in your physician contract.

On today's episode:

  • What even is malpractice insurance?
  • What are the types that you need to know?
  • Which is the "good" one and which is the "not so great" one? (You need to know the difference before you sign the contract!)
  • What you should look for in your own physician contract and why this simple act could literally save you thousands of dollars!

Whether you're years away from your first physician contract, negotiating one now, or already out in practice, this is an important episode for anyone who has or will have a physician contract.

There's the perception of doctors... and then there's reality. We go through so much on a daily basis full of emotional highs and lows; medical miracles and devastating diagnoses; and those exams.

So. Many. Exams.

Dr. Brittney Culp is a busy trauma surgeon who started out her medical career aspiring to be a dermatologist. She traded in a "comfortable", low stress career for an unpredictable, BUSY, and hectic career in trauma surgery.

She did the research. Put in the MANY years of training. And sacrificed left and right.

But, she eventually reached a breaking point and almost QUIT.

Dr. Culp candidly shares why she almost left medicine and why she decided to stay.

  • Surgeons do have emotions.
  • It's okay to feel overwhelmed.
  • Realizing when you've reached your limit...

BURN OUT is real. And it's about time that we acknowledged it openly and without judgement. This episode has become a popular episode, so I brought back from the archives. And for some things, we need to hear more than once.

I was once told that Match Day will either be, “The best day of your life or the worst”. And there is some truth to it (likely, not fully). Nonetheless, it’s up there. Match Day very much can be a pivotal moment for people as they find out:

  1. Whether or not they matched (not everyone does).
  2. Which specialty they matched into (some apply to “back up” specialties).
  3. Where they matched and where they're going to spend the next 3-7+ years.

Many people applying to residency do match on their first attempt, but what you don’t commonly see on social media or even hear about, are the MANY people who do NOT match.

Dr. Shelley Jain is a general surgery resident who candidly shares her journey going from being unmatched to ultimately securing a general surgery residency position.

She walks us through:

  • The shock of not matching and how she got through Match Day juggling her own emotions while her friends and classmates were celebrating.
  • How she “scrambled” into a prelim position.
  • Why she thinks she didn’t match and what she now tells others who found out that they didn’t match.
  • How she successfully matched the second time into a categorical general surgery position. And, did she need to do intern year over again?

An inspiring story about grit, perservarance, and hanging on when others would've let go.

We're surrounded by over-achievers and perfectionists. The further we go in our training, the stronger the competition.

Expectations rise and the room for error minimizes. . .

It can be easy to fall for the idea that we should always be on the top of our game because of course, "I never struggle."

But the reality is, the day to day "behind the scenes" reality is like this half finished puzzle with pieces all over the table and one in your hand as you try to figure out where in the world to put the next piece.

The first year of residency is full of challenges, late nights, and frequent, “How do I order a Tylenol?”

The learning curve is steep and once the training wheels come off, you get into a rhythm and things become more natural.

But what about day or month one of residency?

On today's episode, we walk into the dark room where radiologists thrive. From MRIs to CTs, imaging plays a vital role in the evaluation and management of patients but there's MUCH MORE that goes into radiology than just "reading a film".

Dr. Amrit Hansra is a graduating radiology resident and budding interventional radiologist who started out as pre-dental and shifted gears to medical school and landed up in the reading room, which surprised people.

Why?

And what is it really like to be a radiologist...

It's probably completely different than what you think.

We feel the pressure to do well on each and every test where “just passing” is not even close to good enough. We’re judged by our MCAT scores and told which specialty to go into based on our Step 1 scores.

Reality? The art of medicine is NOT a test question.

Dr. Renee Rodriguez is a successful pediatric cardiologist who:

  • Scored below average on both the MCAT and USMLE Step 1
  • Failed pharmacology in medical school
  • Passed her pediatric boards by ONE point

And guess what? She’s doing just fine!

She matched in a top tier residency program at Stanford and is building her busy practice as a part-time doctor, full-time mom, and fitness advocate.

Tune in to hear how she overcome the stigma of test scores; why she decided part-time over full-time; and so much more.

Sometimes, it feels like all you have time for is your medical training as if your life completely revolves around your coursework and call schedule.

And often times, it does.

Schedules are determined by the rotation your own, upcoming exams, and that 'lovely' call schedule that interferes with your sleep.

(Wait, what even is sleep?)

It can be hard to carve out time for anything outside of medicine, which leads to the question:

Is it possible to be more than a doctor or is that all you have time for?

Dr. Emily Jacobs is an Obstetrics & Gynecology resident who is BUSY! When she's not in the OR or seeing consults, she's taking care of her 18 month old son.

  • How does she balance being a doctor and a mom?
  • How does she not get behind in her surgical training?
  • Shouldn't you wait until AFTER your training to start a family?

You shouldn't have to justify how you want to live your life, but in this field, we can sometimes feel judged . . .

This is a good one. Thanks for tuning in!

The USMLE Step 1 is unlike any other. Just when you overcame the MCAT, medical school brings a higher mountain to climb.

Step 1 is one of the most challenging exams you'll take in your medical training and, like the MCAT, is a critical component of your residency application.

Great, more stress...

There are MANY strategies and study resources to help people pass and reach their target score but the whole process can be so overwhelming and daunting and soon it becomes "impossible" to succeed at.

Well, Ryan conquered Step 1 and scored above a 260. Ryan is a graduating medical student who walks us through exactly how he pulled this off.

  • What was his study schedule?
  • Which resources did he use?
  • When did he start studying for Step 1?

All of thus and MUCH MORE! If Step 1 is in your near or distant future, this is a must listen.

The personal statement is a sore spot for many causing frustration, annoyance, and just plain avoidance. Unfortunately, it's a required component of many applications. Ugh!

Throw in the towel? Hang on there!

Don’t let frustration hold you back. Rather than filling space with words to write an essay that’s “good enough”, use this as an opportunity to strengthen your application.

In this episode, I share tips on how to first approach this writing marathon.
