In this episode Aaron and Clara talk about Clara’s interesting path to becoming the flute player she is today and the persistence that was required of her to land the job she currently has with the US Navy.
Bio:
Clara Mannino, is a flutist in the United States Navy Band Northwest in Silverdale, WA.
Prior to joining the Navy in May of 2019, Ms. Mannino was a freelance musician in Spokane from 2015-2019. She served as a liturgical musician, and on the faculty of Spokane Falls Community College, as well as local music schools. She also played substitute flute in the Yakima, Coeur d’Alene, and Spokane Symphonies, as well as performing with Spokane Civic Theater, and Inland Northwest Opera pit orchestras. She founded and directed the Spokane Flute Choir from 2016-2019.
Clara Mannino holds a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from James Madison University studying with Dr. Beth Chandler and a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from Central Washington University studying with Dr. Hal Ott. During her studies, Ms. Mannino won many merit based scholarships, and competitions. Clara Mannino is the featured flute soloist in the inaugural recording of Alan Hovhanness’ work Meditation on Ardalus, released by Naxos in 2018.

Bio: Multi-instrumentalist, author, producer and tuba mogul Bill Muter has a performance career as diverse as his audience. Having performed in venues across the globe, Bill is without a doubt one of the leading tuba and and bass players earning him the nickname “Tuba Visionary.” The New Times also hails Bill as a “Showstopper” and “The most innovative tuba player we’ve seen.” As an educator and clinician, Bill has served as a Cultural Ambassador to the US Department of State and has worked with music organizations across the globe. Bill is a best selling author and has written multiple instrumental technique books as well as his latest biographical novel “Topless in Tokyo.” His writing has been developed into brass pedagogy curriculum for numerous Universities and Bill has also served on the Curriculum Advisory Board and Philanthropist for Honeyland College in Lagos, Nigeria. Bill is also heavily involved with the marching arts activity as clinician and designer. Bill has worked with the Boston Crusaders, Crossmen and Colts Drum and Bugle Corps and was also the Caption Head for the WGI Gold Medalist “Stryke Wynds.” Bill is currently an adjudicator in the FMBC circuit and an award winning show designer. As a performer, Bill was a tuba soloist, percussionist and keyboardist in the Tony and Emmy Award winning “Blast!” with numerous tours in Japan, South Korea and North America. Bill is the Music Director for The New Standard and played the 2018 Rivera Maya Jazz Festival along with other headliners Norah Jones, Bobby McFerrin, Lalah Hathaway and more. Bill has also played the New Orleans Jazz Festival, Jacksonville Jazz Fest and GroundUP fest along with the likes of Grammy winning Snarky Puppy’s horn section and rhythm sections as well as MonoNeon, James Francies Trio, Matthew Whitaker, Warren Wolf, Stefon Harris, Black Violin, Sarah Reich, Marlow Rosado, Gabel (Haitian Kompa), multi-platinum French singer Mani Hoffman and Ariana Grande (with the South Florida Philharmonic). Bill’s recordings have been featured on BET, Okayplayer, XXL and more. His solo albums have reached #1 on the iTunes Charts in South Africa and in the Top 30 Global R&B charts. Bio
A composer whose music has been “characterized by propulsive, syncopated rhythms, colorful orchestration, and instrumental virtuosity,” (Robert Kirzinger, Boston Symphony Orchestra) Kevin Day (b. 1996) has quickly emerged as one of the leading young voices in the world of music composition today. Day was born in Charleston, West Virginia and is a native of Arlington, Texas. His father was a prominent hip-hop producer in the late-1980s, and his mother was a sought-after gospel singer, singing alongside the likes of Mel Torme and Kirk Franklin. Kevin Day is a composer, conductor, producer, and multi-instrumentalist on tuba, euphonium, jazz piano and more, whose music often intersects between the worlds of jazz, minimalism, Latin music, fusion, and contemporary classical idioms. Day currently serves as the Composer-In-Residence of the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Jones Bio: The newest directions in 21st Century trumpet performance are being explored and defined by Courtney Jones, an award-winning Bach performing and recording artist who has also emerged as a leading figure in contemporary performance and pedagogy, conducting, and service to inner-city youth through music outreach programs. An artist who transcends stylistic boundaries, Courtney has performed with classical ensembles and orchestras throughout the United States, internationally, and has won multiple solo awards and accolades through regional and national trumpet competitions.
Whitney's Bio: Whitney George’s music traverses the affective terrain between tragedy and ecstasy, fragility and strength, bringing together romantically delicate intimacy and the spectacular darkness of the macabre. Her operas, staged multimedia works, and chamber music have had both international and domestic premieres. Most recently, George was commissioned by dell'Arte Opera to write Princess Maleine, an adaptation of a Grim fairytale. She received the 2017 Elebash Award for her orchestration of Miriam Gideon’s opera Fortunato, which premiered under George’s baton in May 2019. George is the artistic director and conductor of The Curiosity Cabinet, a chamber orchestra formed in 2009. She holds an undergraduate degree from the California Institute of the Arts, a master’s degree from Brooklyn College, and is currently a PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center. In addition to her composing and conducting, George teaches at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, works at the Hitchcock Institute of American Studies, and is on the composition faculty for Face the Music.
