Should we really judge James and John too harshly? They express a bold desire to be with Jesus in glory, which is the desire we should also express. The Spirit of God has been given to us as a gift for declaring the good news of salvation. All other created things are for our use, but we must remain indifference to them lest they become ends in themselves. The wisdom from above is likened to child-like faith. This, however, isn't mere naiveté, but the acceptance of the Cross as the inheritance of the Children of God. Though Peter is able to confess the identity of Jesus as the Christ by the inspiriation of the Father, he quickly falls victim to the influence of Satan by denying the Cross. There is no salvation in Jesus Christ but by His Cross. For this reason we boast with St. Paul in the Cross of Christ. Salvation in Christ is the experience of being healed by the one who has the power to restore our health. In today's readings the message could not be simpler: Jesus is our Saviour, and he wants to make us whole again. When Jesus ascends he does not leave us alone, rather he gives us his Spirit and accompanies us in the work of evangelization. Ultimately, preaching the Gospel is not just a human endeavor, but the continued work of God in the world. Why do we have such an allergy to a command? In the end, the law of our Father is for our own good. Though we have to be told to love, the goal is to no longer need that command. Until then, at least we can be sure that it's exactly what we must do ... even if we don't feel like it. Often we think of preaching as a special time for a learned teacher to offer pearls of wisdom to those who are interested, when in truth preaching is an act of the Holy Spirit that moves through the preacher to communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Though it is right to imitate the saints in their earthly example, narrated in their biographies and journals, it is also necessary (and perhaps more urgent) to imitate them in their current activity. The saints, right now, in heaven, are resting in the Lord. What does it mean to rest well? Rather than focusing this All Saints Day on how much more work we need to do to bring about the Kingdom, perhaps we would do well to imitate the saints in Glory who have found their eternal rest. The readings for the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time focus on how we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. As Christians we should preach the gospel using everything at our disposal, but making sure to give God the glory. One of the dangers we may face, though, is false humilty. How many times have you played down your strengths for fear of coming off as arrogant? Well, ironically, by doing that we aren't giving God any glory because he gave us our strengths (and our weaknesses) to shine brightly before men and to give glory to our heavenly Father. This Sunday marks the last Sunday of Ordinary Time. The Church dedicates this last Sunday to the kingship of Jesus. In particular, we see how Jesus the King reigns from the Cross and inaugurates a kingdom of mercy and salvation.
