Season 10 Episode 2: James McVey.

James was made famous through the enormous heights of The Vamps. During his time in The Vamps, as well as in his younger years, he struggled with his identity and notably with what he was eating. James discusses his mental health and experiences from the beginning as well as his tough time this year where he might never have sung again. We chatted about therapy, crying, support networks and lots more.

James has written a fantastic EP titled 'Manabi' which translates as “learning through study” and that’s an apt summary of James’ journey throughout its creation - a process of self-discovery which, in turn, led to previously uncharted angles to his songwriting.

The EP is raw and emotional, something that has been truly captured in both the music and lyrics.

Season 9 Episode 3: Busted

With all 3 members of the band, Matt Willis, James Bourne and Charlie Simpson, we enjoy some magic coffee and cake, which was the therapeutic activity of choice.

We discussed the band in detail, and what that enormous success was like on them mentally in the early 2000s. The boys are releasing exciting new music and touring later in 2023, which you will not want to miss out on!

This episode is sponsored by M&S Cafe. Magic Coffee is the drink that took the coffee capital of the world, Melbourne by storm, and now its available on the UK High Street for the first time. Magic Coffee® is available exclusively in its 330 Cafés across the UK.

Magic Coffee® is made with a double ristretto, topped with the perfect amount of velvety steamed milk. It’s a short coffee (6oz) with a bold, intense flavour, but because it’s made with a double ristretto rather than a double espresso, it doesn’t have as much bitterness as other shorter coffees like a Flat White or Cortado. It’s called a Magic as it is quite literally the magic ratio of coffee to milk!

Go try one now at your nearest M&S Cafe.

Former Love Islander Belle Hassan joined me on Headstrong to talk about growing up with a famous Dad, and what that experience was like. It did not rub off on her though, and was never that interested in the spotlight. During Belle's teenage years, she had an experience with an ex that led to self-harming, because she blamed herself for their relationship breakdown. In reality, there were plenty of things going on, which we talk about, and now she understands that she was a victim of gaslighting and manipulation, but does not blame anyone. This is a really deep, honest conversation, and I hope you enjoy listening to the deep and honest words of Belle Hassan.

In early 2018, Ruth Strauss, wife of Sir Andrew Strauss, was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers. Ruth died later that same year; she was 46 years old and mother to two children, then aged 10 and 13.

In her memory, Sir Andrew set up the Ruth Strauss Foundation (RSF). Ruth’s vision and, therefore, our mission, is to ensure that every family with a child facing the death of a parent has access to professional emotional support to prepare the family for the future. In addition, we are driving the need for more research & collaboration in the fight against non-smoking lung cancers, to which Ruth ultimately lost her life.

For this episode, I made a special trip up to Edinburgh to visit the Scottish legend Doddie Weir in his own home. Whilst Doddie is known to many for his rugby career, gaining over 60 caps for the Scottish National Team, most will know him for his drive and motivation to raise awareness about Motor Neurone Disease. Doddie was diagnosed with MND nearly 3 years ago, but Doddie hasn't let this stop him being positive and an inspiration to many. Doddie and his foundation have raised over £5 million and it is still rising every day.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/headstrongpodcast.

Welcome to my second series of Headstrong. My first episode is with Ed Jackson. Ed is an amazing individual. Ed played professional rugby for a number of clubs in the Premiership & the Championship, when in April 2017 his life changed forever. Despite fracturing his spine and at stages in his recovery not being able to move anything but flick his fingers, he is now a Restart Rugby Trustee and defying the odds by climbing mountains. This is a truly inspiring podcast episode and not one to be missed.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/headstrongpodcast.
