Drugs, plastic surgery, alcohol, video games, gambling, shopping, food, sex, the internet, risky behaviors…can all be addictions. Interview Tips for the Employer
Kaylin asked the panel “When posting a job, what are a few tips for the employer?”
Samantha said “Being very specific and making sure you that you are letting the candidate know exactly what it is that they are applying for and what your expectations are so that there is nothing that is misleading or overlooked when they are applying for that, and they’re confident in knowing that what they are applying for they are qualified for.
Are Cover Letters Still Required?
Ducky believes “You should always include one because cover letters and resumes are two entirely different things. Your resume should be what your educational background, your skillset, and really have those details about your work history and experience. Your cover letter is what sells you. It’s your marketing plan. You have to show the value you bring to the organization.”
Ducky later went on to say that a cover letter “should always be customized, everything should be customized, whether its a cover letter or resume or even a short email introduction. It should always be tailored to the position.”
Interview Prep
Kaylin asked the guests “What are some of the things that interviewees can do to prep for that first short meeting?”
“They always need to research the company. Find out what they do and what their vision is,” Samantha said.
Asking questions is a great way to demonstrate that you have researched the company. Ducky recommends asking questions directly to the interviewer like, “what do you like best about the job?” And “how do you feel like you fit into the culture?”
Bill piggybacked off of that saying you should ask questions like “what kind of people have been successful in this role? What kind of attributes and skillsets did they have?” And then when you get the answer to that go to your experience and background and tie those together so being able to say you say that this time management is very important in this role and I have excellent time management skills and I exhibited that in my previous two positions doing XY&Z.”

“The impact for the families we know and love here at Turning Pointe has been profound,” said Carrie Provenzale, Executive Director of Turning Pointe Autism Foundation. “Our families often times find themselves living extremely isolated lives from the greater community. So the global changes we’ve lived through this year have just further isolated these families and their care givers.”
Hearing loss is the third most prevalent health problem for older adults and affects more than 20 percent of Americans. “While it was really cool to turn up our music back in the day, now we’re often turning the volume up on everything just so we can hear it,” says Seniors Today Host Dennise Vaughn. Inside the Chamber is hosted by the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce President & CEO and brings together a group of experts to discuss today’s top business trends and issues, especially as they affect Naperville.
The Black Lives Matter movement and the intolerance for racism was brought to the forefront following the killing of George Floyd On Memorial Day, 2020. That day, the world watched in shock as Minneapolis police officer knelt on Floyd's neck until he died. People globally protested and companies voiced their commitment to see effective change in areas of racial and social injustice. Several of Dana's friends who are active in doing such things join the show virtually to discuss what made the death of George Floyd different from the other incidents of deadly police brutality against black Americans.

"For the first time we saw white people who would normally stay quiet make a lot of noise and be vocal and be present," said Harris. "For the first time, ,I saw people who had courage speak to truth to power and say that the system is racism and that was exciting. The death of one man literally shook the world."
"I'm seeing the boldness of young people come forward in a way I haven't seen before and to me that is reassuring," said Parker.
Black Lives Matter in the Corporate World
They group discussed in what ways diversity efforts have been cheap and what steps we need to take towards true solidarity, starting in large part with corporate America. "It's no longer appropriate in this country to only have white faces in your advertisements or at your board room tables," said Swanson. "This is what I would call cheap diversity, having diversity for the sake of advancing your own reputation rather than actually making a material difference in individual and community's lives."
"When you say 'Black lives matter,' black corporations matter. Black talent matters. Black leadership matters," added Harris. "You want to impress me? Don't just have another lunch and learn. Don't just give [black people] a job. Make them leaders in your organization."

Nearly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic that has plagued the entire world, local leaders in education are talking schools reopening in our community. The group discusses with the hosts the plan for going back to in-person learning, the anticipation in doing so, measures to keep students and staff safe, and what protocols are in place should someone within a school test positive for COVID-19.
Guests Include: Dan Bridges, Superintendent – Community Unit School District 203 Dr. Adrian Talley, Superintendent – Indian Prairie School District 204 Mavis DeMar, Principal – St. Raphael Catholic School Schools Reopening – A Process and a Positive Outlook The three guests and hosts discuss the reopening as a process, with different grade levels returning to in-person learning at different times. In District 204 for example, Talley says grades pre-kindergarten through second phased into at-school learning in October. Then the district expanded grades three through five, followed shortly this year with middle and high school students.
“What we’ve been very fortunate about is that the children and the students are all very energized and excited about what happening,” said Talley.
“Very similarly, we are very excited in District 203 in transitioning to our hybrid model,” says Bridges. He goes onto explain that there have been groups of students at most of the schools from the beginning of the school year, “minus some short adaptive pauses” in late fall. “There is a new level of excitement now,” he says describing the eagerness of students. “A tremendous amount of credit goes to our educators for the work that they’ve done to prepare for this. We’ve asked them to do things they’ve never had to do before.”
Saint Raphael in contrasts has been open in person since August 19, essentially the start of the school year. Demar attributes that to the thorough training of all teachers in safety measures, placing of six foot markers, and the students wearing masks. “They don’t even notice they have them on. They’re going through their day learning and being challenged. It’s really been amazing.”
Remote or In-Person Learning? Deciding Factors With both private and public schools represented, the panel was able to compare and contrast the two and discuss why some schools and school districts were able to move to in-person learning sooner than others. They all agree that when it comes to comparison, it’s “apples to oranges.”
“I’m a very small school,” says Demar. “I have one of every grade level. If I had five of every grade level, I’d be in the same way that district 203 and 204 are.
Factors that determine schools reopening in a district include: -Size of the District -Class size -Available facilities -Classroom structure and arrangement
“It’s really hard to look at and ask that question ‘Why is this district or this private school and you’re not’ because our conditions and what’s available to us are just so different,” says Bridges. “Every superintendent and every private school leader has to make decisions based on what’s best for their circumstance.”
Staying social remains one of the best ways for older adults to stay healthy, physically and mentally.

With the COVID-19 vaccination, hope seems to be on the horizon. As the rollout moves into phase 1B and beyond, more and more Americans around the country are becoming eligible for receiving the vaccine. While many are anxiously wondering when they might get their shot, others question its effectiveness and some are even hesitant to take it for fear of side effects. Three local experts in the medical field join our hosts to address these concerns about the COVID-19 vaccination and more.

“There have not been any severe adverse reactions to the vaccine,” said Pinsky. He discussed the trials of 30,000 people who took the vaccine and said there had been no deaths and the amount of people who had a anaphylactic (allergic) reaction was about 2.5 people out every one million. For the average person, side effects are minimal. “You hear about people having fevers, feeling a little achy for a day but getting sick enough to miss a day of work, that’s very rare.”
“Any transient side effects, which are expected, you can plan for it or plan to have it on a day where you don’t have too much on your schedule and just let your immune system respond to it,” said Chugh. “But that’s really nothing compared to the tragic impact that this has had on our community.” She explained that there have been more than 67,000 cases in DuPage County, with more than 1,090 deaths.
“For people that are vaccine hesitant, if they’re in that healthy group by the time they are able to receive the vaccination, the vaccine will be in the arms of millions and millions of people,” said Most. “So by the time we get to the summer, weather it’s 100 million or 150 million it will be the largest vaccine study, if not the largest.
There are few things that put a strain on all relationships like a global pandemic. Many relationships, romantic or otherwise, are in crisis but it is possible to save them by "doing the relationship work." But what does that mean exactly? Dana and guests explore the effort and tools that it takes to both maintain a relationship and start anew if it can't be saved in this time of COVID-19.

"There are many relationship that I'm seeing out there where they don't have the skills to work on relationships and then all of a sudden COVID hits and it's just one thing after another," said Guthrie.
Anthony added that for many couples, therapy can help them communicate when tackling problems that COVID has brought to the forefront. "If it's an otherwise healthy relationship, that stuff will be worked out through communication," she said.
The pandemic has removed many ways people have relieved stress - nights out with friends and sporting events for example - leaving us more time to pause and reflect. "When all of that is stripped away, people are really aware of the actual state of their relationship," said Metcalf. "Can we adjust to that or fix this so that we are functioning on a better level?"

Therapist Lisa Pishas suggests, “Maybe this is the year where we can think about ‘good enough.’ Maybe we don’t look at Pinterest this year to make the perfect craft or meal. Maybe we stay away from things like that… “
Because both in-person and virtual gatherings can be stressful, Dilara Sayeed suggests stepping back. “My sister and I are planning a family event,” said Sayeed. “And started with stopping for a moment and not starting the planning. Let’s start with what do we feel comfortable with? We haven’t seen one another for a while. We don’t even know what’s typical in our lives right now. What do we feel comfortable with?”
Open Our Ears And Listen Can we find common ground during the holidays in our own homes? And can we ever find common ground when discussing the state of our community? And when it comes to politics–on the local level or the national level–is it better to simply step away in an act of self-preservation? Or do we confront our worries and stand strong in our beliefs? Reverend Mark Winters thinks we may be going into these situations with the wrong idea:
‘The purpose of dialogue is not agreement. It’s understanding,” says Winters. “What I see happen is folks get dug on a particular issue and their mouth opens and their ears close, and we need to do the opposite. We need to open our ears and listen for understanding we may not always agree with each other on something. That’s OK.”

"Comedians are always funny. I don't care what the situation is, we can always find humor and funny," says Baker. "Now it's not going to be funny to everybody. I don't care if it's death or destruction, part of our coping mechanism is humor."
"We immediately look for the joke because you want to get your joke out there before everybody else does," says Timms. "I was doing jokes about face masks over in Thailand before everybody here started wearing face masks. I was like, 'Man, when I get back to the states, I'm going to throw a Nike logo on face masks. Everybody's going to be wearing them."

Living intentionally might mean something a little different to everyone but Dana and her guests agree that for them, it means being purposefully and making the most of out life.
"It's a battle of the mind. You have to fight yourself, face the mirror and make a decision, how are you going to live that day?" said Pastor Otis Moss III. "There's 24 hours that you have. You're not promised tomorrow but you are promised right now."

State of the City Though it wasn’t a live in-person event like years past, the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce presented its 2020 State of the City address today.
“Reinvesting in Our Resilient Community” Mayor Steve Chirico delivered the address, which focused on the theme, “Reinvesting in Our Resilient Community.” It featured how the city has responded to COVID-19.
Chirico said the city’s strong financial position better prepared than many others for the pandemic.
“Our finances have given the city stability over the past few months,” he said. “It allowed us to provide immediate financial relief to resident and businesses, like waiving late fees for utility payments, extending tax payment deadlines, and reducing third quarter commuter parking permit fees by half.”
Development And though development has slowed down, and some projects like the Washington Street Bridge and North Aurora Road renovations have been postponed, the city hasn’t stopped planning.
The new CNG fuel station, the CityGate campus, and several new developments along Ogden Avenue are in the works.
“I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been told developer Thompson Thrift is actively working with a national retailer on a new grocery concept for the vacant Fair Oaks Ford property that will occupy 35,000 square feet,” Chirico said.
In all, 250,000 square feet of vacant space will be redeveloped in the coming years.
Response to Racism Chirico also addressed several high-profile incidents of racism that occurred in the past year. He commended Councilman Benny White and the Naperville Neighbors United group for working to bring community members of all demographics together.
Several residents were even able to participate in the address by saying why they belong in Naperville.
Looking Ahead Chirico concluded with a message of hope and admiration for the community’s resilience and solidarity.
“Over the past two months, I have seen so many neighbors and friends put the we over me,” he said. “They’ve supported our businesses and they’ve supported each other. And those relationships are what will move us forward.”

When Governor Pritzker announced on March 13 that all Illinois schools had to close by March 17, – two of the largest districts in the state – Indian Prairie School District 204 and Naperville Community Unit School District 203 – had to act quickly.
Impact of COVID-19 on education Dr. Karen Sullivan, Superintendent of District 204 and Dan Bridges, Superintendent of District 203 join host, Jane Wernette, on a special episode of School Scene. Class of 2020 A lot has been said about the Class of 2020 and all the missed celebrations such as prom and graduation. When they left the buildings back in mid-March, everyone assumed they would come together again to say ‘goodbye’ in person. Now that is no longer a reality, the superintendents had some heartfelt messages for their seniors.

Parent/teacher conferences are a staple elementary school, but often attendance goes down from there. “There is a lot of attention on kids who are advance learners and those who are struggling, and not as much on the vast majority of kids in the middle,” say Cathy. She takes a more laid-back approach with her sons, letting them take ownership of their grades and homework. Prior to beginning his career in Naperville, Bryan taught history courses at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Illinois, and was a member of the staff at the Peoria Historical Society. Other published works of Bryan's include Peoria Spirits: The Story of Peoria’s Brewing and Distilling History; Wish You Were Here: Peoria Edition; and several editions of a monthly column entitled “The Curious Curator” for the Positively Naperville newspaper.
