Today we'll examine how Marsha Brantley dealt with cognitive inconsistencies when she wrote in her blog, as well as how she wrote about Donnie and her marriage. The words chosen by someone can reveal much about the mental state. Sometimes it is looking at their specifically chosen words, sometimes it is looking at the themes revealed in their words, and sometimes it is looking at word choices they probably wouldn’t have consciously chosen, but show subconscious thoughts.
Pouring through the blog, there is a lot of evidence of Marsha engaging in lowering her cognitive dissonance.

We know that Marsha was a smart, tenacious, loyal woman who’d learned early in life to have faith that God would meet her needs and she could work through problems herself.
It is her faith in particular that leads me to follow a new line of academic research today, Cognitive Dissonance, and discuss how it can impact someone in a domestic violence situation.
There's a much larger body of research about Cognitive Dissonance, so I expanded the episode to outline the theory and explain how it intersects with family violence. Next week, we'll dig into Marsha's blogs and take a look at how she dealt with the cognitive dissonance that she was facing in her life, as well as what we've learned about her from friends and family.

My dear friends, I am writing and recording this brief episode after the distressing events on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in which a group of people – rioters – mobbed the capital of the United States and attempted to stop the Constitutional duties of our legislatures. I haven't been able to focus on much else this week, so there will not be an episode today.
Marsha Rader Brantley had personality traits that seem contradictory. Some describe her as fun, while others describe her as private and aloof. As we develop the victim profile, let’s dig into her personality as well as the situations that shaped her in her adult life.
We finish the victim profile today and will be prepared to discuss domestic violence next week.

One of the things that drew me to researching the case was the lack of information about Marsha. In the news reports and 48 Hours TV show, she was a colorless wallflower who was a loner introvert. In hearing colleagues at work talk about her, though, I hear about a very different Marsha. She could be fiery, passionate, competitive, and fun.

When Marsha Brantley disappeared in late May or early 2009, no one reported her missing for nearly six months, not even her husband. In past episodes we established what was going on in her life throughout the first part of the year, hearing from friends and family that she was depressed, dealing with financial crisis, and had stopped interacting with many people. Today we’ll track the timeline immediately following her disappearance, including her husband's purchases at home improvement stores, and hearing from one of her neighbors as well as her hairdresser -- the one who eventually reported Marsha as missing.

Fiona is a bright, creative woman who experienced domestic violence from multiple men in a few different countries. Despite being the repeated target of violence, Fiona wanted better for herself and her children. She started college when she was 44 years old, continuing through until she had a master’s degree. She wrote her first book, “I Did It, You Can Too!” to motivate others to persevere in their education.

As a 13-year-old, Cynthia felt like she was pretty grown up and when a 19-year-old Ryan paid her a lot of attention online, she was flattered, but knew she had to hide the relationship from her family.
As a kid of divorced parents, she felt a bit neglected by them and when this man, Ryan, paid attention to her, at first it was like watering a withering plant. She enjoyed his focus on her and it helped ease loneliness.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t recognize his predatory requests and became embroiled in a relationship that impacted her life all the way through her first year in college.

As we ended last week, Marie had decided she needed to permanently leave the marriage, to divorce her husband, not just pack up the kids and leave temporarily when he was being abusive, waiting for him to cool down. Years ago there was a bright young woman named Lauren who graduated with a communication degree from my university. She went on to grad school and won a scholarship, partly based on a submitted essay. It began, “I need to get bread, carrots, and shaving cream tomorrow at the grocery store. Did I move the clothes from the washer to the dryer?”
These were the thoughts that were going through my mind the night I was physically attacked, beaten, and sexually assaulted.”

Moving forward from family violence is much easier to talk about than to accomplish because it is not a straight path. Recovery is like a zigzag road with hairpin turns and lots of backtracking. But keep moving on that path, because there is hope and light beside you as well as in front of you.

Josh was not the only Osborne child being abused and his sisters tell their story today. Parts 1 & 2 released together. We can’t change the past, but we can use that knowledge to make better futures. A phone call is about to be made leading to the rescue of 15-year-old Josh Osborn, whose parent starved him and chained him to his bed. Dealing with a stalker is a confusing and emotional ordeal. While this person’s behavior makes us uncomfortable and we want to stop it, we often try to let them down gently. We try to save their face, meaning that we try to avoid embarrassing them. When that doesn’t work, we try to tell them directly that we are not interested, thinking that a clear communication should do the job. It feels bad, scary, when these basic strategies don’t work, but we’re still worried that we are overreacting. Today, I’m going to answer some of the questions I’ve received and provide some practical information about responding to stalkers. None of it is perfect, unfortunately, and there are no easy answers, but there are some steps people can take if they want to assertively deal with a stalker. On November 18, 2015 Monica Nielsen Deming posted on Facebook for the final time. She changed her cover photo to a fall sunset photo of a placid lake, bronze trees, and a solitary dock with the Bible verse John 14:8 inscribed across it. “If God is all you have, God is all you need.” Then Monica quietly deactivated her facebook account to try and escape the harassment with which former boyfriend Brandon Leyva bombarded her. With a week and a half, Brandon shot Monica to death. The previous two episode we’ve been learning about The Story of Jane, a survivor who is now and advocate for domestic violence survivors. Jane introduced us to the case of Monica Deming as she is working to pass legislation to protect future targets such as Monica from violent perpetrators. In honor of Jane, we're turning our focus to Monica’s story. We hadn’t planned to delve into her death next, but as we prepared to talk about the legislation that is so important to Jane, we realized that we needed to understand the genesis of the proposed bill that is being called Monica’s Law.

In December of 1990, Tracey Thurman came to Washington DC to testify before a Senate Hearing. Then-Senator Joe Biden of Delaware invited her to testify as Congress considered a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to address widespread intimate partner violence and a lack of resources for victims. Although bitterness against the police was an undertone in her testimony, she avoided blaming them in this statement, instead listing their problematic responses, focusing on prevention and asking for better protection for women in the future. Police were annoyed in the 1980s because they felt like they were being asked to be social workers. It took legislators to change the law enforcement practices (and hopefully, attitudes) with laws designed to require arrests for those accused of domestic violence. Alone, permanently disabled, and unable to work, Tracey Thurman sued the City of Torrington for violating her rights because they did not protect her from her husband’s abuse as they consistently refused to seriously respond to domestic violence. When Buck Thurman assaulted his wife, Tracey Thurman for the final time in June 1983, their son CJ wasn’t yet two years old. After stabbing her and stomping on her, Buck ran into the apartment she was staying in and grabbed CJ, bringing him out to see his mother laying limply in the glass, slowly bleeding out. Most of the time when we hear about domestic violence in the news, it’s because something tragic happened. Usually it’s a perpetrator who assaulted a target, causing extreme injury or even death, such as in the case of Tracey Thurman when Buck stabbed her 13 times and stomped on her while a police officer did not intervene. Sometimes targets will go through the legal system for protection, as Tracey Thurman did, and obtain a restraining order against their abuser. We don’t hear about the times when the restraining orders work, we usually hear about the times when the perpetrator violates it and causes damage. This brings us to some important questions. Are restraining orders worth more than the paper they’re written on? Is it wise to try and obtain one? Or will it just make matters worse? By the time Tracey Thurman was placed in an ambulance, nearly an hour had passed since she’d been stabbed and stomped on. She laid bleeding out on the ground without receiving medical care. During eight months of hospitalization, she had to learn how to eat and walk again. Why did Buck attack Tracey when she left him? There’s quite a bit of evidence to establish leaving as a dangerous period. Last season, one of the most popular episodes was the examination of why Wanda Gibson Maddux stayed in the violent relationship with Ronny. Similarly, I want to examine the same topic with Tracey because I know this is still puzzling to many people. There have been many academic research studies about how targets of violence often undergo a leaving PROCESS rather than just leaving once or twice. The more times a target has left an abusive relationship, the more promising it is that the relationship will end. While Tracey stayed for a while to try and work on their relationship, she also left multiple times and sought police protection to enforce her choice to leave. We also consider the media messages that surrounded Tracey Thurman and the theme that true love changes people. When Tracey met Charles "Buck" Thurman, she was a mama's girl in mourning. After her mother passed away from lung cancer, Tracey dropped out of school in Connecticut to move far, far away to Florida where she met a cocky young man who wooed her. Buck easily and believably told her he loved her and he was very protective of her. Tracey said that he made her feel safe. The abuse didn’t begin right away. His protectiveness slid into obsessiveness and his temper edged into violence. A survivor of abuse once told me, “The more we talk, the more we’re healed, and we see it as history instead of what is still going on.” Domestic violence is not something that happens to only a few people; it’s widespread. About 35% of women and 28% of men in the U.S. have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Why don’t we know more know about it? Shhhhhh. It’s a secret. People feel shame for their abuse. They feel as if they’ve done something wrong. They feel as if they will be judged, and found wanting, if others know about it. It is time for the secrecy to stop. We can tell our stories, reclaim our power, use our experiences to help, to heal, to demand change in our world. We’ll begin Season Two with the series “Fight for Justice” about Tracey Thurman, who had to sue an entire city in the 1980s to hold the police responsible for allowing her ex-husband to stalk and attack her despite her requests for police involvement in advance. Tracey was a young married mother when her husband, Buck gradually escalated from intermittent slaps to deadly violence. Tracey’s story will help us examine how society and law enforcement might fail targets of domestic violence. When I choose the first case for Targeted Podcast, it was Melisha Gibson’s story that called to me. I knew the impact it had on me and I was intrigued to see what we could learn today, in 2018, from her death. The child protection system is far from perfect, and much remains to be done, but, at the same time, much has been accomplished. “ (John B. The law is not going solve child abuse, but we have very few ways as a society to respond vigorously to abuse, and legal endeavors seem to be a logical effort. When we speak of legal changes, there are a few different main ideas. First, we’ll talk about the shift in penal codes, in which child abuse became a felony in many states. Second, we’ll discuss the revisions to CAPTA (Child Abuse and Prevention T Act) in 1977, third, we’ll cover the reassertion of juvenile courts over social services, and with that we’ll feature one of the most important changes (in my opinion) of children having court-appointed advocates. Before speaking about the changes to social services we need to understand why Melisha was placed back with her parents. Melisha Gibson’s stepfather abused her severely at 11 months old and she lived for more than three years in a foster family with whom she had a deep bond. Foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins considered Melisha, or Missy as she was called, and inquired about adopting her. Ronnie and Wanda Maddux wanted their children returned, however and over the course of months, one-by-one the state returned all of the children, placing Missy there last. Why? Why did social services in the US hold reunification of the family as so important? And since it was so important, why didn’t social services provide more resources or require treatment that would have given a family placement more chance at success? When Wanda Maddux took the stand to testify in her own defense, she told the jury that the day before her daughter died her husband, Ronnie, "acted plumb wild. Stepfather Ronnie Maddux testified that Wanda and his older stepdaughters were the ones to abuse Melisha. He revealed Wanda told him that Melisha "doesn't love you." Could this be why Melisha died? Before the Maddux murder trial began Judge Witt asked one of the attorneys a question in open court, "Don't you realize that everyone, no matter how low and how despicable, has a right to be represented by an attorney?" This question was widely published in newspapers, and sets the tone for the trial that was about to begin. The public pressure was intense surrounding Ronald and Wanda Maddux’s guilt of murdering their 4-year-old daughter, Melisha Gibson. Petitions and protests called for the Madduxes to be put to death. Country music star Hank Snow even wrote TN Govenor Ray Blanton demanding the death penalty for anyone convicted of child abuse. I tend to think of the road to a trial being an ordered and logical progression from arrest to arraignment to trial. The road to a trial should be well-marked and driven upon with caution. But it seems to me as if the typical slow and steady drive on the road to a trial didn’t happen. During opening statements in the murder trial, DA Richard Fisher told the jury, “Ronald Maddux maliciously with a cold, cold heart beat and tortured this child.”
While I am biased against the perpetrators who target those around them for abuse, I determined to approach the subject of the stepfather using critical thinking skills rather than my emotional gut reaction.
I don’t make excuses for him and I believe in justice, but there is enlightening research about head injuries and batterers.

Happy Birthday, Melisha. If you were still on this earth, today, March 10, 2018, would have been your 46th birthday. Although only four years old when she died, Melisha knew love and she was cherished. People loved her, they just couldn’t save her. Happy birthday, Missy.

Since one of my goals is to use academic research to explain what was happening in the Maddux home, the first subject we need to discuss in Ronald Maddux. How and why did he behave in this manner and why did the mother allow it? I believe that Ronald fits the profile of a Patriarchal Terrorist, also known as an Intimate Terrorist.
