Creative Thursday with Marisa: Recent Episodes

Marisa Anne Cummings

Marisa Anne Cummings, a Los Angeles based artist + author + entrepreneur, actually started the Creative Thursday podcast in 2006. What? what! how is that even possible? And yes! she wishes she had kept it going after all these years. Yet as a small business owner, maybe you can relate? choices needed to be made, and a passion for painting and continuing to build her art business became her focus. Cut to over a decade later, armed with SO many more lessons learned, and a - can no longer be suppressed - desire to share them with you! Marisa is ready to make a return to one of the first creative mediums she loved, podcasting! Even more fired up than before, Marisa is looking forward to picking up where she left off on her creative journey through both - one her favorite things to do - having thoughtful, inspiring, keeping it real, conversations with fellow Creatives + Business Owners along with offering her own perspective as an artist and entrepreneur, traversing this online world. We’re talking everything from life + business + creativity + entrepreneurship.

What if the reason you're not moving forward isn't about motivation?

What if clarity is simply the domino that needs to fall first - and nobody helped you find it?

In this episode, I'm sharing a realization that's been building for years but finally got crystal clear this week - through three coaching calls, a hot seat, and a sentence I kept hearing from every Artist I spoke with.

This one is personal, a little vulnerable, and exactly what I needed to say out loud.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • The one sentence every Artist I've coached lately has said - and what it's really telling us
  • Why knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different problems - and what bridges the gap
  • The three reasons Artists stay stuck: the shiny squirrel, perfectionism disguised as preparation, and doing it alone
  • Why I've shifted from "I help Artists make money" to something more honest - and more useful
  • Why clarity is the domino that knocks over all the other dominoes
  • The strawberry first principle - and why I reversed the productivity advice everyone gives
  • What it really means to stop spinning - and why you don't have to figure it out alone
  • An invitation: come do this together

Nothing's gone wrong. You are exactly where you're meant to be.

Ready to stop spinning and start deciding - together?

What if the conversation we really need to have as Artists isn't "online education sucks"…

…but what we believe about money, marketing, and what's actually possible for us?

In this episode, I'm celebrating 22 years in business and speaking from a place I've held back from for a while: a little spice, a lot of honesty, and a deep desire to bring nuance to a conversation that keeps getting flattened into hot takes.

This episode was inspired by an important conversation happening right now, about the validity, value, and integrity of online education for creatives, and I'm using it as a jumping-off point to share what I've learned from building an art business through the messy early years, the "nothing is working" years, and the long-game consistency years.

If you've ever wondered:

  • "Is marketing slimy?"
  • "Is it even possible to make good money as an Artist without selling your soul ?"
  • "Do online educators actually make money from their art or just teaching?"
  • "Are courses overpriced?"

…this episode will meet you there—and invite you to get curious about what you really believe.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why this conversation is really about beliefs (and how to tell if a belief is serving you)
  • My honest take on "misleading statements," "toxic positivity," and why nuance matters (two things can be true)
  • The behind-the-scenes reality of my early years (2004–2007) and why we don't talk enough about the "not making a living yet" part
  • A blunt perspective on pricing: the $2,000 course debate, art school costs, and why discernment matters more than blanket statements
  • Why "marketing is slimy" can quietly sabotage your ability to sell your art (and what to do instead)
  • Why I'm proud of building a sustainable business—first through art sales, and later by building an education business with integrity

This episode is part celebration, part behind-the-scenes truth, and part invitation to keep the dialogue going—because I truly believe Artists deserve better conversations around business, money, and possibility.

What if hearing real Artist stories could be the thing that helps you finally believe…

"This is possible for me too."

In today's Artist Success Stories episode, you'll meet Mo, Dena, and Emily—three Artists who are building their art businesses in the real world (with real life happening), and finding their way forward with more clarity, consistency, and confidence.

This episode is for you if you've been feeling stuck in the messy middle… craving momentum… and wondering what it actually looks like when an Artist decides to take their work (and their selling) seriously—without burning out or becoming someone they're not.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • What shifted for Mo, Dena, and Emily when they stopped "winging it" and started following a plan
  • The mindset hurdles that come up when you start putting your work out there (and how they moved through them)
  • What consistency really looks like when your schedule is full, and your confidence isn't perfect
  • How to build momentum even if you're starting small
  • Why your story and your voice matter just as much as your strategy
  • The powerful role of support, structure, and community when you're growing as an Artist

I also want you to listen for the little moments—when an Artist realizes they're not "behind"… they're just ready for a clearer path.

Because sometimes the most helpful thing isn't one more tip.

Sometimes it's hearing someone else say the exact thing you've been thinking… and watching what happens when they keep going anyway.

What if starting to sell your art (again… or for the first time) could be simpler than you're making it?

After 21 years of building a successful art business, I'm sharing the foundational starting point I would choose if I were beginning today—without trying to do everything at once, without performing online, and without burning out.

If you've been feeling scattered, overwhelmed, or stuck in "I don't know what to focus on first," this episode will help you cut through the noise and choose a direction you can actually follow.

In this episode, you'll discover: * The most common reason Artists feel overwhelmed when marketing (and how to fix it) * Why selling your art is about connection, not convincing * The simple "start here" approach I'd follow today to build momentum * How to think in 90-day focus seasons instead of yearly pressure * Why consistency matters more than bursts of motivation (especially when life is full) * How to stop being a "shiny squirrel" and do more of what's actually working

I'm also sharing a little behind-the-scenes honesty about the perfection loop so many of us fall into—where we wait until we feel ready… and end up pausing instead of taking action.

Listen through the lens of: "What if this works?"

Because it really can.

What if you could go from doubting you're a "real artist" to actually getting excited about your weekly newsletter?

In this inspiring Artist Success Stories episode, I'm sharing conversations with three incredible artists - Rochelle, Jessica, and Linda - who've transformed their creative practices and businesses over the past year. These aren't overnight success stories - they're real examples of what consistency and community can create.

Meet the artists and discover:

  • How Rochelle started growing her email list and now wakes up excited about her newsletter content
  • Why Jessica calls planning "a container for freedom" and how she learned to love every mark in her art - even during the "ugly phase"
  • How Linda shifted from economics to art and now believes in the possibilities available to her as she builds her art sales on the side
  • The surprising mindset shift that helped these artists embrace marketing as relationship-building, not selling
  • Why starting with friends and family as your first collectors is actually a strength, not a limitation
  • The simple tracking system that helped one artist realize she'd accomplished WAY more than she thought

Each of these artists started exactly where you might be now - questioning if they were "good enough," wondering if this could really work, and feeling overwhelmed by all the options. But they found their rhythm through consistency, community, and believing that small steps add up.

The common threads? They all found safe, creative communities, committed to small daily actions, and learned that marketing is really just sharing the heart behind their work.

What if selling your art online could work for YOU?

After 21 years of building a successful art business online, I'm sharing the 5 key insights I wish I'd known from day one. If you're wondering whether it's really possible to sell your art online, this episode is for you.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why selling art is about so much more than just posting pretty pictures
  • The one investment that will make or break your online art sales
  • How to approach pricing from a place of confidence instead of guesswork
  • Why showing up consistently matters more than getting likes or comments
  • The simple strategy that prevents overwhelm when marketing your art
  • Plus, my bonus insight about who's actually buying art online (hint: it might surprise you!)

I started with an email list of 8 people and no podcast listeners, but I believed it was possible and showed up consistently. That belief and consistency built the foundation for everything that followed.

Listen through the lens of "what if this works?" instead of doubt - because it really can work for you too.

What if I told you that planning could actually be your creativity's best friend instead of its enemy?

In today's episode, I'm getting real about how my relationship with planning completely transformed - especially as a new mom navigating the biggest identity shift of my life. If you've ever resisted planning because it feels restrictive or anti-creative, this episode is for you.

I used to be that free-spirited creative who thought planning would kill my spontaneity and rob me of those magical moments of inspiration. I believed that "Artists" worked purely from flow, not structure. Sound familiar?

But here's what I've discovered: planning isn't the enemy of creativity - it's actually what creates MORE space for your creative flow to happen.

In this episode, I share:

  • Why I used to resist planning with everything in my creative being (and the fears that held me back)
  • How becoming a new mom made planning absolutely essential for my mental wellness
  • Why "I don't have time to plan" is actually the biggest sign that you NEED to start planning
  • How planning has become part of my creative practice and mental health routine
  • The reframe that changed everything: planning as a container for freedom, not a restriction
  • Practical tips for creatives who struggle with structure, including working with your natural energy rhythms

The truth is, when you have a framework to work within, you actually free up mental energy to focus on what matters most. Planning brings presence, peace, and perceptivity to your creative practice.

As I share in this episode, planning has literally become my best friend during one of the most challenging seasons of my life. It's not about perfection - it's about creating a practice that brings you back to yourself and helps you make progress on what truly matters.

If this episode inspires you, and you're ready to discover how planning can actually amplify your creativity while supporting your mental wellness, join me for the summertime session of the Profitable Artist Planning Challenge.

This is the perfect time to check in on what you set in motion at the beginning of the year, celebrate your progress, and create a sustainable plan for the second half of 2025. We'll go from big picture vision all the way down to your daily practices.

Join us starting June 16th at profitableartistchallenge.com - because the most successful artists aren't the ones who wait for inspiration to strike. They're the ones who create the conditions for creativity to flourish.

What if times of economic uncertainty could actually be opportunities for your art business to grow?

In today's episode, I share my 21 years of experience surviving (and thriving) through recessions, pandemics, and everything in between as a professional artist. If you've been wondering, "Is anyone still buying art right now?" - this episode is especially for you.

The answer is YES - people absolutely buy art in all economies! In fact, during challenging times, people crave the inspiration, joy, and perspective that only art can provide.

In this episode, I share:

  • My personal story of how I pivoted during the 2008 recession to create my first online course when art sales dipped
  • Why having multiple revenue streams is crucial for weathering economic storms (and how I quickly created new income during the pandemic)
  • The importance of looking for opportunities rather than dwelling on negative news
  • How research shows creativity impacts our mental and physical wellbeing, creating even MORE opportunity for artists
  • A special invitation to our second annual Shiny Squirrel Summit

I've been running Creative Thursday for 21 years now, surviving both the 2008 recession and the pandemic by staying nimble and focused on possibility. When the world seems chaotic, I don't retreat - I lean in to find new ways to share my art and knowledge.

If this episode has you thinking about diversifying your creative income streams, you're in luck! Our second annual Shiny Squirrel Summit is happening soon, with 12 amazing expert speakers sharing exactly how they've created multiple revenue streams in their art businesses.

What qualities do Creatives have in common that make adding a membership model to their business a perfect fit?

We'll tell you! In today's episode I'm joined by my friend and Mentor of 5 years and Membership Expert Stu McLaren to talk about the wild success Artists are seeing in the membership space.

And by success we mean, growing 7 figure memberships in just a few years, while inspiring art and creativity, and creative business skills for thousands of people across the globe.

It's inspiring, to say the least, to see this rapid growth of PROSPERITY and THRIVING in an industry that was once known for its starving, struggling mentality.

Days of the Starving Artist are gone as Creative Business owners today, myself included are changing the narrative forever more.

It turns out there is one single quality many of us share that makes Artists especially successful at starting, building, and running memberships.

In today's episode, we share

  • what that one quality is among others that makes Artists perfectly suited to add a membership to their revenue streams
  • how many different kinds of creative memberships there are with very specific skills being taught
  • how to know if starting a membership might be something you want to do
  • what owning a membership, not 1 but now 2! has done for me both personally and professionally

If this episode has thinking about what it might be like to start a membership or you have one going already but don't know how to grow it effectively, you're in luck because Stu's free workshop is happening now:

If I could go back and mentor my younger business self, the one who said yes to her dream of becoming a Professional Artist, the lessons learned that I share in this episode is what I would say.

Today, March 7 marks a celebration of not only 17 years of making a consistent living with my Creative Business but this February 2024 I celebrated 20 years since the very first Creativethursday.com site went live, featuring my Art work.

Back then I was so busy trying to make it all a go, that I didn't even know (or think I had the time) to intentionally hold a vision and actually plan out where I wanted to be 20 years ahead. For the longest time I was living in a pinch me state, wondering if what I was building wasn't just a temporary dream.

Turns out it wasn't a temporary dream, but one that would grow to help and support you in your Creative dreams too.

What would it have been like if I had the insight I have now when I first started?

That's the wish right, and yet it's the 20 years of lived experience starting, building, and growing my own business that was the ONLY way to gain this insight.

And now I get to share this wisdom with you, while also applying it to my vision for the next 20 years.

So, let's go! Together

In this episode I share 20 plus lessons I learned in 20 years of building Creative Thursday, covering a variety of topics from

  • the power of intention
  • keys to Creative Business success
  • how to navigate your business boundaries
  • why knowing and tracking your numbers is essential
  • what I wish I had known sooner

Be honest: how's your 2024 Social Media plan looking?

Are you feeling ready with a big picture strategy in place, or are you reading this thinking, Marisa what are you talking about "ready", I barely know what to post tomorrow let alone the rest of 2024

Would you like to feel more prepared when it comes to your marketing?

What if this is the year you could change the hamster wheel approach of: overwhelm + procrastinate = now I feel behind so why bother with any sort of plan at all ~

to breathing easier because you feel clear and excited about what you're creating and sharing with the wonderful people who can't wait to see (and collect) what you're working on.

On this first Creative Thursday of the new year, the energy of clarity that comes with a clean slate is on your side which is why I'm excited to welcome you to part 2 of the Time Management series where I'm continuing to answer your questions and sharing tips on how to organize your social media content so that you're not constantly trying to figure out "what to post" and wondering whether what you post will actually help you reach your people and grow your Art business.

When I find myself getting overloaded by a long list of to dos, a simple practice of physical and/or digital organization is the best place to start to catch my breath and clear my head.

With that approach in mind let's get into some practical tips to help you get organized.

In this episode, I share:

  • what tools and apps I use to organize and back-up my assets

First ~ thank you for your kind messages about our recent loss.

Holiday time, depending upon how you like to approach this season, can be filled with long to-do lists, countless visits, parties, and celebrations, or if you're like me, a perfect time for a peaceful reset.

Very intentional about how we choose to spend Christmas, Sean and I often opt for a quiet celebration which leads to a perfect opening to dream, plan, and prepare for what's next.

Over the past few years of a rapidly growing business, this has been the best time to get caught up and reset, from organizing to planning along with getting a head start on upcoming projects, especially those happening at the start of the new year (get excited and save the date! the Profitable Artist Planning Challenge and Coaching week starts Monday, January 15)

On the last episode I invited you to send me your questions about time management, and this is the first in a series of 3 answering what you asked about the most with today's part 1 focusing on a very popular topic: Social Media, specifically how I plan my Social Media from content creation to posting.

In this episode, I share with you:

  • the BIG mistake I see many Artists making when it comes to how and when they post to their Social Media
  • what you must have clarity on FIRST to effectively post to your Social Media
  • why it's important to understand your relationship with selling and being sold to
  • how I like to plan my Social Media shares
  • my best practices for planning and posting your Social Media content

See you January 15 for an inspiring + fun 2024 Planning session!

Did you hear the news? Not only am I now a happily married Mrs!

What do you do when you feel resistance to the very thing you say you want, like growing your Art business.

Specifically, what keeps you from putting your work out in the world for sale?

Is it:

  • that it's hard for you to part with your originals?
  • you're afraid of the response how it will be received?
  • you're concerned it might not sell?

And what does it mean if your work doesn't sell?

Welcome to another session of Creative Business Coaching over coffee where Artist Una Marz courageously, and vulnerably answers the questions above when she asked for coaching help to understand her fears around releasing her original works.

Una and I talk through her fears after I share several announcements from

  • Sell A Piece of Art Challenge starting this Monday! to
  • Opening registration to my first in-person painting workshop in Los Angeles this November
  • To the story of how the opportunity to design my first box of cards for Papyrus came to be.

Did you get a chance to listen to episodes 317 (part 1) and 318 (part 2)

WARNING: Don't listen to part 3 until you've listened to parts 1 and 2 in order.

I kid, and yet I don't.

I'm guessing you're a freedom seeker like me and you like to do things your way, and I get that.

I can't make you listen to these episodes in order. You are free to listen to them, however, whenever you like. But if you really want to get the most from tuning into this series of episodes, listen to them, and journal your honest answers to the prompts in order.

Ok, I've said my peace. On with part 3! :)

So you've been doing "all the things" to sell your work and you're still not having the success you want?

You're trying to make changes in your "Mindset" but the changes aren't sticking? WHY?

And the defeat you're feeling is starting to get you down and making you question whether this Artist life is actually meant for you?

What can you do about it?

While we have access to a lot of education around the practical steps to selling your Art + Creations, there aren't enough conversations around this very important piece to selling your work ~ mastering your ENERGY.

Let's keep the conversation going with part 3, the final installment of a 3-part series.

In today's episode, I'm sharing how to change the habits that may be holding you back from finding consistent success + sales with your Creative Work.

Spoiler Alert: Don't skip ahead! Did you get a chance to listen to episode 317 (part 1)

So you've been doing "all the things" to sell your work and you're still not having the success you want?

You're trying to make changes in your "Mindset" but the changes aren't sticking? WHY?

If you haven't listened yet, to get the most of this series talking about how to find more success at selling your work, be sure to go back and journal your answers to the prompts I share in part 1.

While we have access to a lot of education around the practical steps to selling your Art + Creations, there aren't enough conversations around this very important piece to selling your work ~ your ENERGY.

Let's keep the conversation going with part 2 of a 3-part series.

There's a lot of talk around Mindset when it comes to success, specifically making Money, but what creates your Mindset?

When does it start?

What if your mindset isn't working for you?

How do you change it?

There's a foundational piece you don't want to miss if you want to create lasting transformation that will help you create the life you envision.

I'm talking about the foundation in part 2 of this 3-part series.

Let's change that conversation starting now with this episode, part 1 of a 3-part series.

We talk about confidence but your overall energy is much more than that.

While you can muscle your way through to a certain level of confidence, a consistent, integrated, inspired energy around selling work is what you need to build the successful business you dream of.

What's the specific energy you need and how do you accomplish that exactly?

That's what I'm talking about in part 1 of this 3 part series.

What do you do when your creative spirit is missing?

We don't often talk about this as Artists ~ but the thing about turning your passion into your business, is that lines can get blurred and you need to find ways of staying connected to your passion to have long lasting success in your career.

And when seasons of life can feel like too much all at once, making Art might feel like the last thing you want to do ~ yet without your Art there is no business...

As Professional Creatives we need tools at the ready to give ourselves grace, while also helping us to find our way back to center and inspiration again.

In today's episode I'm offering a possible solution:

  • I talk about how I navigate social media for my creative businesswhen I don't feel like sharing
  • The boundaries I set for myself when it comes to engaging with social media
  • A variety of tools I use to help find my way back to my center + peace + creative inspiration

Have you ever wondered if you're not really ready for your dream? Or what if your dream actually isn't right for you?

Of is it that self-doubt and fear have momentarily gotten the best of you...

With all this talk of Impostor Syndrome, I thought it was time for a deeper dive into what this phenomenon is all bout ~ especially because when using this term as it applies to Artists + Creatives there's a lot of grey area.

In today's episode, I talk about

  • when the concept of Impostor Syndrome originated, it's actual definition, and who it was describing
  • how does it apply to Artists
  • how to know if you're an Impostor or just think you are
  • the questions to ask to help you let it go once and for all

Dedicated to all the Mama's out there - in honor of Mother's Day and celebration of my Mama's 84th birthday today.

A deeply personal podcast episode for you.

For years I've wanted to invite my mom, Erika to share her story here on the podcast, and today (on her birthday) it's finally happening!

A conversation with a Mother and Daughter, a personal story of a dynamic, passionate, independent Woman whose life began during WWII in Germany and ultimately brought her to the United States with via Italy and Paris, France, the Bahamas, and Russia.

Not our usual creative business chat, but we talk about life, from family, generational evolutions, culture, career, travel to love and teddy bears.

A very big leap of trust for a deeply private person to share her story here with us.

We truly hope you enjoy this episode and that it might inspire you.

We only got through a portion of Erika's story and we may be open to bringing you more of the story if you think that's another episode you would enjoy. Please let us know, send me a dm over on Instagram @creativethursday

Lots of love. Happy Mother's Day!

Ready to dream + explore more possibilities of how to profit from your Creative Gifts!

Welcome to part 2 of last week's episode no. 308 (you can listen to part 1 right here) where I walk you through 8 more ideas for generating revenue with your Art.

Everything I'm listing in this episode and the one last week are all proven ways I've generated revenue in Creative Thursday over the past 16 years.

It's a well-known fact that for a business owner to have peace of mind, you want to have multiple revenue streams, some more passive than active, and what I'm emphasizing today is to have recurring revenue built into (at least 1, if not more) of those streams too.

I've been talking about my friend and business coach Stu McLaren's workshop over the last couple of weeks.

If you're seriously considering starting your own membership, product or knowledge focused, and you're reading this TODAY! You're in luck because Stu just opened the doors to TME - The Membership Experience this week and TODAY is the very LAST DAY to join the 2023 session.

So don't let another year pass you by and miss out on this amazing opportunity.

I can't recommend this program enough. One of the best, and only courses I've completed from start to finish, I'm thankful everyday I came across Stu in 2019 and jumped into TME.

I've been working with Stu ever since and my business continues to grow with more clarity, efficiency, and profit than ever before.

Join TME here

(proud to be a partner of Stu's. When you join through my link I'll be coaching a group of you through the program, in a more intimate setting to get your questions answered, brainstorm ideas and have the opportunity to dive a little deeper into what you're learning so you can implement it successfully right away.)

Want peace of mind as an Artist, Solo-preneur Creative Business owner?

I'll never forget what one of my early Mentors said to me "You want to sleep at night as an entrepreneur? You're going to want many eggs in your basket"

And she was right. By eggs, she was referring to multiple revenue streams. The part that I would add today is to make as many revenue streams as you can recurring revenue.

Artists in particular have to be very careful about conserving their energy, especially when they turn their Art into a business because feeling inspired is not only tied to your creative well but to your income.

It's all too easy to experience burnout when you're consistently creating for your revenue.

You can really sleep at night when you have consistent income coming in, in some cases while you're sleeping.

In today's episode, a behind-the-scenes of one of our Expansive Artists call, my friend and Mentor Stu McLaren is back on the podcast to share ideas for all the ways you can add recurring revenue via 2 different models into your business, especially as a creative.

And I stay on to answer questions for our members about ideas they have plus my experience investing in Mentors and the choice to grow the Mentoring side of my business.

Stu is hosting his 1X annual FREE Workshop all about starting your Membership and it starts TODAY!

Not just talking about your studio space today, or perhaps? a kitchen table studio like where I first started my Art business, but in today's episode I share a story about how I figured out what cultivated my most inspired creative times.

It wasn't obvious to me until recently ~ first when I founded The Expansive Artists, with an intention to cultivate and support an inspired creative community of fellow Artists growing businesses along with hosting in person creative events, like retreats and workshops ~

Here's the thing: the environment and community you choose to surround yourself with can make all the difference in the way you find, tap into and express your unique creative vision.

It's way more important than you might realize.

I invited a special guest, Floral Designer and Founder of Apotheca Flowers, Alyssa Van Guilder to join me for this conversation.

We're both excited to announce that our 2020 dream of hosting an in person creative + creative business event together, is finally happening this year.

Are you someone who writes down your goals for the year or do you question if this ritual actually gets you the results you want?

How about writing down your "word for the year"?

Do these practices really make a difference or are they just busy work to remind us what we didn't accomplish since last year?

Do they only make sense at the beginning of a new year or can they still make a difference in any month you choose?

I'll be honest, I was skeptical for a long time about whether this kind of specificity around my goals and intentions was actually helpful, then I gave it a try and realized it's a game changer.

In today's episode, I share with you why I decided to not only choose a word for the year but to share it publicly.

I talk about

  • how these simple practices can help you gain clarity year after year, no matter when you implement them
  • how that clarity can help you know exactly what to focus on next
  • the powerful intentions a single word can cultivate for you and what mine are for the word I choose this year

Inspired by a variety of conversations with creatives I had at the start of this new year, the response to a spontaneous instagram post I created that is now my most liked post of ALL TIME, celebrating the 300th CT episode, all coinciding with a BIG birthday in just 2 days - I'm assessing next steps personally, professionally and specifically with this Creative Thursday podcast.

Let's just say the lens through which I'm choosing to Mentor and Coach is shifting and I'm sharing with you why.

I'd love your thoughts on the ideas and suggestions I'm offering in this episode and then...

If you like me simply want more time to create your Art this year and make it a regular habit again, I've got 3 tips to begin feeling like an Artist again, especially if you're an Artist who's turned your Creativity into a Profession.

On a side note if you LOVE rabbits, and/or are curious about seeing and collecting a new series of Creative Thursday paintings, then you'll want to check out the new Year of the Rabbit-inspired originals right here at creativethursday.com

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, through reviews and messages.

How do you go from owning that you’re ready to be an Artist to having your career as an Artist support you in owning a house in France?

Yes it’s possible! But first...when setting out to accomplish your dreams

Ask yourself if you’re taking advice from people who are living what you want to live?

Or listening to people who tell you, you can’t accomplish your dreams versus the ones who tell you, you can?

We're celebrating 300 episodes today and since the original mission of the Creative Thursday podcast was to share my journey as an Artist wanting to become a Professional not only to share what I was figuring out with you but to inspire all who are wanting to be creative and/or build a business doing work you love to do just that ~

I thought there’s no better way to celebrate the 300the episode than sharing Artist Success Stories with you

Featuring our guest Artists

Jeanette Bergstrom, Erwin Ong, Marie-Laure Delage-Carlson

In this episode we talk about:

  • How to let go of limiting beliefs when it comes to creating your Art and building your Art Business

Do you have a special ritual or practice to close out the past year, to welcome in the new year, besides clinking glasses filled with your favorite sparkling beverage at the strike of midnight.

In years past, right after my new year's toast, maybe I picked a word for the year, but I usually raced from one year right into the next, never pausing to reflect and assess, and thoughtfully bring what I learned and appreciated into my dreams and plans for the next 12 months and beyond.

In this episode I walk you through the practice I now use at the end of every year, to review all of the prior 12 months (the highs and the lows) all the progress I made; what I've learned, am grateful for, want to continue, what I choose to say goodbye to, and say yes to in the new year!

Ready to start fresh for 2023 and kick-off your year with clarity + focus for your Art business!

The tradition continues for the 3rd year in a row!

I'm back with my 2022 year in review.

At the close of each year, I share a behind-the-scenes studio wrap-up of what worked and what didn't when it came to my art practice and my creative business.

How did my work impact my personal life and this year especially how did my personal life impact my business?

One of the most challenging years filled with a new level of growing pains plus the emotional and physical pains left over from a significant amount of personal health stress ~ I share:

  • my biggest lessons I learned
  • the progress I made in spite of it all
  • what I'm choosing to leave behind
  • what I'm choosing to take with me into 2023
  • what I'm most grateful for even through the hard lessons learned

What's your go-to when you're just not feeling inspired?

How do you get back into that Creative flow?

Because, as you may know, I've been painting up a storm this month and have never been so excited to making Art again.

And TODAY in celebration of a return to prioritizing creativity, for the first time all year, I'm releasing a group of original paintings. Is prioritizing creativity on your list again for 2023? or is it just me 😉 (actually this year was pretty decent for me because I used the tip I'm sharing with you here more than I thought I'd have time for)

How'd it go this year for you? Did you feel like you made time for Art making the way you wanted to?

If you're feeling like it's challenging to summon that creative muse, this is my best tip for kickstarting creativity.

Works like a charm for me every time.

Not to mention in this episode I'm also sharing some bonus wine, vineyard and travel tips for you.

A jam packed 30 minutes where you could grab your brushes right now, pop your EarPods and make some Art.

pssst...if you make Art while you listen you'll be getting a head start on the 3 steps I'm sharing with you today.

Enjoy!

And thank you for supporting my Art xo

The new ornaments are releasing today @ 11 am PST via email first. Join the list and view + collect your ornaments as soon as they're released at creativethursday.com or click here.

My planning practice, or rather my planning obsession, has reached a new level and I've got a brand new tip to share with you in this episode.

Inspired by another new love for project management - something that before my business started to grow to include a team that I had no idea "was a thing" - this planning tip is good for both using pen (preferably markers!) + paper and digital.

I’m also celebrating the release of the brand new 2nd edition limited edition 2023 creative planner, which is date free so you can start it or use it at any time of the year that you like.

Are you feeling frustrated that you aren't getting any traction in marketing and consistently selling your work?

This might be why... Not all marketing trends are the best strategy, especially for Artists starting out.

With a new "Art expert" popping into my social media feed every other day, there's more noise than ever out there with a million and one recommendations and marketing strategies to try, one of which is the trend that encourages selling work in Collections.

In today's podcast episode I'm breaking down why I disagree with the trend of recommending that you sell and release your work in Collections, especially if you're just starting out.

And if you want to go deeper on this strategy in an upcoming LIVE Masterclass I'm teaching next week, you can learn more and save your spot at Dailypaintingmethod.com

In almost 300 episodes I haven't shared EXACTLY how I started my Art business, how is that possible?

The truth is that business owners can get so distracted by shiny squirrel syndrome (listen to this previous podcast episode no.) and all the latest marketing strategies, that we can miss the most obvious one that's right in front of us, and forgetting to stay focused on what works (easily!) and double down on doing more of that.

Exhibit A - me, Marisa right here mentoring you and forgetting to emphasize what was the most important foundation to growing Creative Thursday, the specific strategy that took me from selling 1 greeting card an entire holiday season to growing a 6 figure Art Business.

In this episode, I'm sharing the practice that helped me

  • stay consistently connected to making my Art
  • find my Artist voice
  • grow my following + my email list
  • find my Collectors many of whom are still collecting my work today
  • and generating consistent revenue with Art sales

Who decides when you're ready?

Is it you?

Is it an Art teacher or Gallery owner?

Is it your family, your partner?

Is it the inner critic living in your mind? (You know that one that's not always the most supportive...)

One of the most common objections I hear from Artists starting out is that they don't feel "ready" to sell their work.

While it's an important question to ask ~depending upon the answer, it can also be one more very logical "excuse" (I mean reason) that can keep us from fulfilling our calling, stepping into our power, and sharing our gifts with the world.

There's a lot at stake in that one answer, which is why in today's episode I want to help you make that decision easier by listing my top 3 ways of knowing that you're ready to sell your Art..

Enjoy the episode and then! come put these steps into practice and join me for the Sell A Piece of Art this Week Workshop.

Hello Creative Friend, I've got you!

While I don't regret it, I do look back and recognize the sometimes subtle, singular decisions I could've made that would've been a game changer in growing my Art business.

There's no need to repeat the Artist struggles and yet I see Creatives ignore this recommendation again and again.

So this is it! my invitation to act on this 1 simple suggestion that has the potential to radically change the success you'll see in your Art business from this point forward.

And here are more ways I can help you, starting TODAY 💖

You don't want to skip this part!

It can be easy to get too carried away with more advanced steps to building your Art business that you completely forget to be thoughtful in the order and care you take those early steps.

When you rush, and try to figure it out by yourself you just cost yourself more frustration and time in the long run.

Save yourself that agitation now and ask an experienced Mentor you trust for guidance.

Just like one of our Expansive Artist members asked me during our monthly Q&A. It's such a good one that I wanted to share my answer in this week's podcast episode.

Some ways you can get coaching from me over the next month:

  1. Come join me LIVE for Creative Business Coaching over Coffee on Instagram @creativethursday next Thursday, August 11 + 18 @ 10 am PDT
  2. Join me for the Fall session of the Profitable Artist Plan 5 day Workshop + Coaching week, starting August 22. Invite to register 💌 is coming soon, so stay tuned!

No one wants it to take an overnight hospital stay to be the wake-up call for you to learn an important lesson.

But so be it.

This is my personal story that doesn't veer far from my professional life.

For too long I let fear and anxiety influence the way I chose to grow my Creative Business, and this is where it's time to make a new choice.

The person who went into the hospital is not the same person who came out, and how I was running it will no longer be the way I will be running it going forward.

In today's episode, I share with you how this health challenge inspired me to dive into my fear versus resisting it, and what has happened since.

Stunned that we're still having this conversation and throwing cautionary tales out to people who may just be getting up the courage to pursue their passion as a business, I open this episode with a response to a conversation I heard with 2 well-respected Women leaders, just moments before I went LIVE for Creative Business Coaching over Coffee last week

And then one of our founding Expansive Artists members, Quilting Artist + Teacher Laura came on to get coaching help with her recent “failures”.

She bravely, and vulnerably shared what happened in her recent launch, and together we came up with a solution for her next steps. Spoiler alert: no failing actually happened….😝

Do you think you may have found your voice but you're just too close to the work to see it?

Or is it because you're emerging that you automatically assume you don't have a voice yet?

Could it be that your work needs a more consistent practice to fully develop into a unique + elevated offering?

Spoiler Alert: you might already have the answer on how to find your voice, but you're looking outside for reassurance and validation.

That's all fine and good as long as you also know how to trust your own intuition, and as a Coach I'll remind you to look inwards for your answer, like I did in my Creative Biz Coaching over Coffee session no. 2 with New Mexico Artist, Nara.

The doors to The Expansive Artists are re-opening for the first time this year, tomorrow Friday March 18.

What’s my love of cooking a good meal + sourcing the majority of my food locally have to do with running my business?

After spending 3 days in a Mastermind surrounded by some amazing business owners - the kind who are “crushing it” daily, growing to 6, even 7 figures within one calendar year ~ the concept of the slow food movement popped into my mind.

As they vulnerably shared their experiences of what that kind of growth really meant for them, I came away from that gathering with a whole new insight and understanding around what I want for my business and how it can support the life I want ~ not the other way around.

Recognizing my date with burnout is coming dangerously close, if I don’t make a change ~ this is the new approach to growing my business that I’m thinking about…

If overwhelm is being busy without priority, then confusion is not knowing what your priorities are.

Working backwards, that means that without clarity your days are driven by a state of confusion and overwhelm which is also what I call living on a hamster wheel.

The overwhelm never ends.

Since it doesn't look like the complexities of living a creative life + growing an online business are going to let up any time soon, or ever ~ it's up to us!

Why me? or Why not me? Be honest, when you're thinking about your dreams, which question pops into your mind first? Then ask yourself what example are you setting for your kids, for generations to come? Do you want them thinking the world is filled with possibilities or to not bother trying because what if it doesn't work out the way they thought? When we give ourselves permission, the ripple effect is powerful because it gives someone else permission too. Have you ever thought you were clear on your "priorities" only to realize that something else always comes first?

He's going to share tips with you on how he not only lost weight, built strength, balance and how he healed all his aches and pains. Sean's also sharing his go to supplements and other habits that in response to the shock on people's faces when they realize he's 63 not 45.

It's become tradition!

A couple of years ago I started sharing a behind the scenes studio wrap up of what worked and what didn't when it came to my art practice and my creative business.

And how did it impact my personal life?

One of my best years in business thus far, a lot of progress made, and definitely more room for improvement in one area I was struggling with last year.

The question is which one will I choose to interpret my overall year?

Not that the sneakly little Overwhelm monster doesn't try to creep back into my routine, but now I know how tame him and get sh*t done efficiently, with way more peace.

In today's episode I share with you another eye-opening definition of Overwhelm along with exactly what to do when you feel it coming on.

Think about the last time you prioritized you and something you most love to do.   Like art and creativity perhaps? especially if your business is your Art.   This past weekend, instead of prioritizing catching up on administrative projects in my creative business, I decided to dedicate it to my creativity.   Something clicked for me and I realized what I can no longer give up.   Ask yourself if what you're focusing on is actually what you want to prioritize in your life? and if so are you following through on that with your daily actions,  or are you just giving lip service to the things you say you want the most?   Like I have been....   You can find all things Marisa and Creative Thursday

And if yes! tell me. Paper or Digital?

And if paper what are your non-negotiables when it comes to your favorite planners.

Do you habit track?

Do you do 90 day plans, yearly, monthly? or are you lucky if you just manage to chicken scratch a to do list?

Are you a bullet journaler?

Do you have a love hate/relationship with social media?

Do you want to create art you feel connected to and sell it to Collectors who LOVE what you create without feeling forced to bend to an algorithm?

Yes! Fabulous! in a time when the demands of effectively using social media are changing (once again), it's time to revisit how you want to approach using this tool.

Let's start at the beginning. There are a whole lot of mistakes I see Artists unintentionally making, simply because they don't know what they don't know.

Time to change that and reconnect with why using social media is one of the most incredible, powerful tools, to yes - genuinely connect with the people who get you and your work.

Coming to you with a special Sunday edition of the podcast.

In 2000, I started to ask myself the question, if I truly believed I could follow my dreams and become anything I want to be in this world, would this path I'm currently on, be the one I'd choose? It was answering that question that ultimately lead me to finally acknowledging that I always wanted to become an Artist.

When I was easing my way into the belief that I could be an Artist, I found great comfort in listening to any and all stories from people who had been where I was, chose to pursue their passions and made it.

I couldn't get enough of these stories. Let's be honest I still can't get enough.

What has become my check-in, I still ask myself that question, which invites me to keep dreaming bigger. And it's listening to stories from the inspiring people out ahead of me on the journey that keeps me appreciating how far I've come and enthusiastically focused forward on all the goodness that is yet to come!

I can talk endlessly about my passion for mentoring The Expansive Artists how inspired I am by their kind + generous spirits, dedication to their dream, and their incredible progress every week, not to mention their beautiful art!

But today I invite them to share their stories, and experience as a member of The Expansive Artists to inspire you and give you more insight into what it's like to work with me and be a part of our incredible community if you're thinking about joining us this time!

Enjoy a recording from a recent live chat.

If you care about about INTEGRITY, the value of creative work, and rights for Artists, this should make you angry.

I have a documentary to recommend, along with a personal story about a collaboration that almost went very wrong.

If any of what I share is a shock to you, then we as Artists haven't been truthful about our experiences.

One of the reasons Artists continue to find themselves in these kind of predicaments is because we're not talking honestly, and making educated business decisions, especially when it comes to collaborating.

It's time for that to change.

Here's to empowering Independent Artists and helping you to build a Thriving Business Online.

Are you afraid of making a “wrong” decision when it comes to building your online shop?

One of the questions I get asked the most by the Artists I mentor is “what website, e-commerce platform do I choose for my online shop?” followed by “how do I know for sure, that it's the right one for me?”

So often our fear of making the wrong decision keeps us from making any decision at all, which in turn keeps us in a holding pattern ~ what I refer to as paused versus progressing.

In this week's episode, I'm getting super practical and sharing my top 3 online platforms, and I step you through exactly why these are my favorites.

Repeat after me: “I am an artist.”

In today’s episode we continue the conversation kicked off last week about what having your own art business will make possible for you, and today I answer a question inspired one of our Expansive Artist members, Michelle about “How to find Your Artistic Voice?”

How do you find your signature style as an Artist, especially when you're just starting out. In this episode I share three approaches for helping you cultivate the artist within yourself.

Let's explore the answers to these questions:

How does allowing yourself to be influenced by the work others help you to let your unique style shine through? How can collaboration help you to grow as an artist?

How often should you focus on your art? How much time are you willing to invest in the practice of your art? Cultivating creativity will help you to piece together your own heart and your uniqueness to find what makes your work special.

What did I hope having my own Art business would make possible for me?

I was recently reminded of the power in answering 1 simple question.

As I continue to explore new directions with my painting, I've been re-connected to that feeling of beginning, anticipation and enthusiasm for what's next with trepidation over all the uncertainty.

I had NO idea, if I could actually create this career as an Artist, but I knew I had to try.

On today's podcast episode I share with you, what the beginning was like for me, why I really started my Art business and if it's lead to where I thought it would, while also sharing what I think having an Art business today could make possible for you!

Call all high-achieving and heart-centered Artists. Want to to turn your passion into an Art career, here are the top qualities I believe it takes to thrive as an Artist, selling online today.

I know, I know ~when I was coming up with this title High-Achieving Artist (not to be confused with over-achieving) that pairing of words sounded so unfamiliar, downright strange.

In my desire to support Artists in building a thriving business around a practice of creating Art they love, I never connected High-Achieving with Artist before,  but in recent months it's become increasingly clear the stakes have been raised. As "War of Art" author, Steven Pressfield says, it's time to step into the role of the Professional. Here's how!

Ready to re-connect with your vision + plans for 2021 alongside a group of dedicated Artists (both emerging and established) next week, starting Monday June 14 to have a mid-year check-in and creative dreaming + planning session, click here to to join us for the Profitable Artist's Planning Challenge.

If this is your attitude, chances are I'm not the right Mentor for you.

When I constantly say that the opportunity to become your Mentor is an honor I do not take lightly, it's not just polite lip service ~ I mean it and this is why.

I take your trust in me very much to heart. The more years I do this work, the more I want to become an even better Mentor, which means that behind the scenes, I'm now constantly learning and refining my skills as a coach, to show up my best for you.

Mentoring looks a little different for me now than when I started teaching again 3 years ago.

And as I continue to grow as a coach, I always want to keep you posted on my intentions and how I think I can best support you so that you can decide if working together is the right fit for you, at this time.

Radical transparency, no justification

Maybe you can relate? but I would say that many of us Creatives still have a disconnect around embracing “Marketing” “Selling” and “Making Money” while still making our Art (with heart). Proudly making money and creating Art that lights you up are not mutually exclusive.

I'm exploring this topic more in the coming weeks, and I'm kicking off the conversation in today's podcast episode where I very clearly explain a shift in my business for the first and last time ;)

What's your superpower?

If you're maybe, oh I don't know rolling your eyes right now, or feeling discouraged (hug to you) and saying in your mind or out loud, “superpower, what superpower, I have no idea" - Stop that ok!You have it, likely more than one.

There are 2 questions I share in today's podcast episode to help you identify what it is.

Identifying and embracing your superpower is a discovery, and I believe we've been making all of this a bit more complicated than it needs to be.

Let's just say your superpower may be more obvious than you think.

When taken advantage of, email marketing can take a creative business to the next level. Yet it's often avoided!

Meet Emily McDowell, writer, illustrator aka feelings translator. In 2012 Emily started making cards because she saw a hole in the stationery market. She couldn't find any cards that reflected her reality: one that included messy relationships, dysfunctional families and her personal experience going through cancer and getting your traditional "get well" card which lead to her create her "viral hit" line of Empathy Cards, and follow up book "There is No Good Card for This".

In Emily's words, "I am the person who was crazy enough to start a company with $5K and an 11th grade math skill level" If you've wondered how an Illustrator could grow a single card line into a company that is carried by over 2,000 retailers, in this conversation Emily takes you through each step of building her business from the very beginning. An episode filled with hard-earned knowledge and guidance, Emily shares invaluable wisdom gained through the rewarding but also very real truths of what it takes to grow a successful stationery business. Tune in all the way until the end...

There's a long story behind the unexpected challenges of making this series, especially Season 2, but that will be saved for another day and another podcast.

Today it is my honor and pleasure to introduce you to my friend, first sewing teacher, and fellow Creative Business owner, Christine Haynes.

A Sewing Author, Teacher and Pattern Maker, in our conversation, Christine not only takes you through her journey of building her business, from risks taken, pivots made, full time jobs left, weeks set aside for annual trips to Paris (Paris travel tips are included for dreams of once again visiting the city of lights) ~ but you'll want to listen all the way to the end where shares a heartfelt, personal story and message that is especially meaningful and timely.

A journey that spans from art and film school in Chicago, all the way to Brooklyn via a stopover in L.A. (Christine is sharing her pattern designing process with you too!) ~ I know you will be inspired.

And yes! you can now take virtual sewing classes with Christine from her Brooklyn Studio. Find all things Christine Haynes at ChristineHaynes.com and on instagram @christinehaynes

We must be mindful when we give guidance to fellow Artists. Are we encouraging an increase in the value of the work created in our industry or continuing to perpetuate the old and outdated beliefs on how to price our work?

Hearing recent advice given by an established Artist to an emerging Artist about pricing work, gave me pause and inspired me to kick off a conversation about the truths, and false beliefs about the marketplace in which you choose to sell your creations.

"Sell A Piece of Art this Week" Join me for the Free 3 Day Challenge. We start Tuesday, June 23.

What do you do?

Do you leave it as is or fulfill your original vision?

What if your Collector won't like the work once it's finished?

Inspired by a question Nadia asked in the Expansive Artists. She shared that her work was "in that awkward teenage stage where she doesn't want to touch them for fear that people won't like them..."

...I know how the story ends! What did Nadia decide and how did it work out?

Grab your sparkling beverage of choice (I happen to be sipping a glass of Lamarc Prosecco on this episode) or your favorite treat and tune in to hear my thoughts on how I handle this fear, and spoiler alert, we're going to do some celebrating...!!

In Stu speak "Hot Diggity Dog"! The reason my business just had it's best month (thus far!).... I've been holding out on you. Very selective about who I choose to work with, and invest in when it comes to Mentors, and equally as selective about who I choose to recommend to you (as I explain in my longer than normal intro to you in this episode)

I'm honored and excited to share and recommend my business coach for the past year with you, Stu McClaren. If you don't yet know Stu, oh you will! And you'll be so glad you do, because Stu, a generous, kind-hearted entrepreneur is the master at helping all industries (especially the Creatives!) build and grow recurring revenue models in their businesses.

In our chat today, he is sharing some powerful success stories with you that I know will leave you fired up and thinking about possibilities you may never have thought of before.

Be sure to jump in and join Stu for his once a year only Free Tribe Workshop. You'll learn so much. I'll see you there!

Two weeks after this conversation, the doors to Apotheca temporarily closed. Recorded pre-Covid-19, the mission Alyssa shares in this conversation is precisely the same mission and intention that is supporting her business today. Her quick thinking, ongoing strength, flexibility and innovation is not only keeping her business going, but creating opportunity for the future of Apotheca and the work Alyssa plans to do in Floral Design and Business Coaching.

I know hearing her story through the lease of what we're experiencing at the time this podcast was published will invite you to recognize Alyssa's genuine, inspiring, heart-centered qualities that are the key to building a lasting business, even through extraordinary times.

Her mission and message is a powerful one that extends far beyond the beautiful floral creations that she's been sharing with the world for 15 years.
