Rewriting the Story We Tell About Age

What story are you telling yourself about your age?

Is it that you're too young to lead?

Too old to begin again?

Too late to change careers, pursue a dream, or discover a new purpose?

Too often, we allow age to become a limitation instead of seeing it as a source of wisdom, growth, and possibility.

But here's the truth: Age doesn't define your potential; the story you tell yourself does!

Join us on this episode as we explore how the beliefs we hold about age shape our confidence, our choices, and the opportunities we're willing to embrace.

Together, we'll challenge outdated assumptions, reframe what's possible, and discover that every stage of life has something valuable to offer.

It's never too early to make a difference or too late to begin again!

Join me, Coach Elix, and my husband, Steven the Medium, as we explore one simple yet powerful question:

What story have you been telling yourself about your age, and is it time to rewrite it?

How much of yourself have you edited to make others comfortable?

How often have you softened your voice, hidden parts of your story, or changed who you are just to fit in, belong, or avoid judgment?

Many of us learn to shrink ourselves to gain acceptance. But authenticity requires courage.

Are you courageous enough to show up fully as yourself?

This Pride Month, Coach Elix explores the cost of editing ourselves and the freedom that comes from living authentically.

When we hide parts of who we are, we don't just lose visibility; we lose connection, confidence, and the opportunity to be fully seen.

Join me, Coach Elix, and my husband, Steven the Medium, as we discuss what happens when we stop performing, stop apologizing for who we are, and start embracing our whole selves.

Because the world doesn't need a carefully edited version of you.

It needs the real you.

How much of yourself are you editing just to fit in?

Many talented, capable people spend years becoming acceptable instead of becoming distinct.

They soften their opinions. Hide parts of their story. Downplay their experiences. And slowly lose the very thing that makes them unforgettable.

On this episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, Coach Elix sits down with renowned executive coach, leadership expert, author, and respected thought leader Donna Karlin to discuss her upcoming book, The Only: Perfectly Yourself. Impossible to Overlook.

Together, we'll explore:

✔ Why authenticity is a leadership advantage ✔ How over-editing yourself limits your influence ✔ The connection between life experience and leadership ✔ Why being impressive isn't the same as being fully known ✔ How embracing your unique experiences and perspective can make you impossible to overlook

Donna's book challenges readers to stop shrinking themselves and start embracing the wisdom, insights, and lived experiences that make them uniquely valuable.

The world doesn't need another version of someone else.

It needs the version of you that only you can be.

How often are the biggest limitations in our lives not external but internal?

Sometimes the box we are trying to escape was never built by others. It was built by fear, doubt, past failures, expectations, and the stories we keep telling ourselves about what is possible.

These invisible limits quietly shape our decisions, our relationships, and our future.

But what happens when we challenge those beliefs?

What happens when we realize the box was never locked?

Today, we're unpacking how self-imposed limitations hold us back and how we can begin breaking free from them.

We'll explore how self-doubt, comfort zones, and mental barriers keep us stuck and how real growth begins when we challenge the boundaries we've accepted as truth.

What would your life look like if you stopped believing the limits you placed on yourself?

Sometimes the box we feel trapped in was never locked; it was built by fear, doubt, and the stories we accepted as truth.

Breaking free starts with awareness.

It starts with questioning the beliefs that keep us small and choosing courage over comfort.

Growth does not happen inside limitations. It happens when we challenge them.

Join me, Coach Elix, and my husband, Steven the Medium on this episode as we discuss: Thinking Outside the Box: The Invisible Limits We Place on Ourselves.

"Have you ever been introduced… to yourself?

Not the version you show the world, but the real you beneath the roles, expectations, and survival mode.

Here's the truth; many of us are living as outdated versions of ourselves.

We've outgrown our thinking, our habits, and even our identity.

So why are we still holding on?

Because it feels familiar.

In today's episode of Get a Grip with Coach Elix, we're asking the hard questions:

👉 Who are you… really?

👉 And who are you becoming?

Because growth isn't about becoming someone new…

It's about rediscovering who you truly are.

Join me, Coach Elix, and my husband, Steven the Medium, as we explore self-awareness, identity, and what it really means to meet your authentic self.

Why Can't We Let Go? The Hidden Reasons We Hold On.

You're not holding on because it's right.

You're holding on because it's familiar.

Letting go isn't hard because you're weak.

It's hard because:

– You've invested time

– You've built memories

– You've attached your identity to it

But here's the truth:

Holding on is costing you more than letting go ever will.

Your peace.

Your growth.

Your self-respect.

Your alignment.

All waiting on the other side of release.

The question is…

What are you really afraid of losing?

Join me, Coach Elix, and my husband, Steven the Medium, on this episode as we talk about how letting go is not about losing but about choosing yourself.

A tradition is a belief, practice, custom, or way of doing something that is passed down from one generation to another.

Traditions are powerful. They connect us to where we come from, the people we love, and the memories that shaped us. But traditions should never feel like a burden we're forced to carry.

Some traditions bring us joy. Some traditions bring us pressure. And some traditions… we carry without ever asking why.

The truth is, we don't have to abandon traditions, but we are allowed to redefine them. We are allowed to keep the ones that bring us peace, let go of the ones that bring pressure, and create new ones that reflect who we are becoming.

In this week's episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, we're having a powerful conversation about traditions, what we keep, what we carry, and what we choose.

Because traditions shape our identity more than we realize. They influence how we celebrate, how we love, how we show up in relationships, and even how we see ourselves. But not every tradition still reflects who we are today.

This episode is about reflection, growth, and giving yourself permission to choose intentionally instead of living on autopilot.

Take a moment and ask yourself this: What tradition are you holding onto that no longer feels true to who you are?

Join me, Coach Elix, and my husband, Steven the Medium, as we reflect, question, celebrate, and maybe even let go of some of the traditions we've been carrying for years.

Do you know that time is lying to you?

"I'll start when the time is right."

"I'll change when things settle."

"I'll follow my dreams… later."

But what if later is the lie?

Time didn't stop you.

Fear did.

Comfort did.

Avoidance did.

The truth is—there will never be a perfect moment.

No perfect timing.

No magical green light.

So the real question is:

If not now… when?

If not you… who?

Join me, Coach Elix, and my husband, Steven The Medium on this episode as we break down why waiting for the "right time" is costing you your growth, your purpose, and the life you know you're meant to live.

Hate doesn't discriminate.

It targets race.

It targets identity.

It targets love.

This Black History Month, we honor the legacy of courageous love that marched with Martin Luther King Jr., endured prison with Nelson Mandela, and continues in every fight for dignity, including the fight for LGBTQ+ equality.

Discrimination against Black communities.

Discrimination against LGBTQ+ communities.

Different histories. Same root which is fear.

The only thing more powerful than hate is love, but not passive love.

It is courageous love.

It is collective love.

Love that stands up.

Join us on this episode, as we honor Black History Month, we're not just celebrating culture — we're celebrating courage.

The kind of courage that marched across bridges, endured prison cells, faced fire hoses, and still chose love over revenge.

Love is not passive. Love is not soft. Love is disciplined. It is strategic. It is revolutionary.

Today we're talking about collective courage and what it means for us right now.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner.

And while the world is busy buying flowers and making reservations, Steven and I wanted to talk about something deeper.

After 32 years together, what we've learned is this:

Love is not sustained by one romantic day. It's sustained by daily practice.

It's in how you speak to each other on a random Tuesday.

It's in how you handle stress.

It's in how you repair after you miss each other.

So today, this is simply a conversation between Steven and me about what actually keeps love alive beyond Valentine's Day.

Join us for this special pre-Valentine's episode as we explore love as a daily decision to stay, to grow, and to protect what we've built.

Some of life's most important lessons don't happen in classrooms. They happen in grief in midlife during heartbreaks and in healing.

Life doesn't stop teaching us once we leave the classroom.

Some of the most powerful lessons come in midlife—through loss, healing, spiritual questioning, and moments that ask us to slow down and truly listen.

on this episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, we're joined by Susan Chung Fontaine; humanities educator, podcaster, and co-host of Between the Lessons—for a deeply reflective conversation about spirituality, grief, health, and the quiet lessons life teaches us along the way.

With over 50 years of combined experience in education, Susan brings wisdom not just from teaching but from living.

In this conversation, we explore grief as a teacher, spirituality as an evolving journey, healing while still showing up for others, and what it means to live intentionally in the spaces between life's biggest moments.

This is a conversation about humanity, reflection, and the lessons that stay with us long after the bell rings.

Because grief can become a teacher. Midlife can become a mirror. And spirituality can become an anchor.

And the lessons we gather along the way don't just shape how we live—they shape how we love, lead, and show up for others.

Strength doesn't always look like pushing forward.

Sometimes it looks like standing still long enough to survive what you didn't choose.

So many people are exhausted by the pressure to be inspirational, productive, or "resilient" in performative ways—being told to bounce back when all they're really doing is holding steady.

On this episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, Coach Elix sits down with Donna Karlin, a renowned coaching psychologist with over four decades of experience, to talk about The Quiet Strength We Never Talk About—the kind of strength that isn't loud, visible, or celebrated but deeply human.

What about the strength it takes to simply hold steady?

To survive what you didn't choose—without turning your pain into a performance?

If you're tired of proving your resilience… this conversation is for you.

Happy New Year! ✨

When a new year begins, we often go into overdrive—planning, listing goals, and hoping this year will finally be better than the last.

But what if you didn't need a January 1st reset to begin again?

What if your dream life is already within you?

Waiting keeps us stuck because belief shapes behaviour.

When we believe we must wait, we postpone our becoming.

Today, we invite you to stop waiting and start living as your future self—now.

What if you didn't have to wait for January 1st to become who you're meant to be?

What if your future already exists and is simply waiting for you to step into it?

In our New Year special episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, join me, Coach Elix and my lovely husband, Steven the Medium, as we explore why real transformation doesn't follow a calendar, and how shifting your identity and beliefs can change everything.

The new year isn't about becoming someone new.

It's about remembering who you already are.

As we step into this year, remember: you are not behind, and you are not late.

Your future isn't waiting on a date, a moment, or permission—it's waiting on alignment.

When you shift who you believe you are, the way you move begins to change.

So instead of asking, "When will it happen?"

Ask yourself, "Who am I choosing to be today?"

Because the future you're hoping for doesn't start someday.

It starts the moment you decide to live it now.

We all have stories we tell ourselves, stories about who we are, what we deserve, and what's possible for us. Some of these stories empower us, but others keep us small, holding us back from the life we're capable of living.

On our episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, we're diving deep into the lies we tell ourselves; the fears, beliefs, and inherited narratives that shape how we see ourselves.

Many of these beliefs don't come from truth but from conditioning, past experiences, trauma, and the internal voice that whispers, "You're not enough."

The greatest prison we will ever live in is the story we never challenge.

This episode explores: – How self-deception forms – Why the brain prefers familiar limits over uncomfortable truth – The emotional cost of living in a small identity – How to rewrite the story into one that reflects who we're becoming

We don't just face obstacles in life, often, we carry them within us. The lies we tell ourselves can convince us we're not ready, not worthy, not capable, or not meant for more.

But what if those thoughts aren't truth?

Join me, Coach Elix, and my husband, Steven the Medium, as we break down how limiting beliefs are formed, why the mind clings to old narratives, and how to rewrite your story with power, honesty, and possibility

Permission to Want More" Do you know that wanting more isn't selfish, but it's sacred?

Society has taught us to play small. To be "grateful" for what we have, not ask for too much, and tone down our ambitions so we don't make others uncomfortable.

We've been conditioned to downplay our dreams, to confuse humility with limitation, and to see desire as greed. But what if wanting more is actually your soul asking for growth?

Your desire isn't greed; it's guidance toward the life you're meant to live.

On this episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, we're exploring why guilt often shows up when we dream bigger, how cultural and emotional conditioning can make us feel undeserving, and how mindset work helps us reclaim our right to want, to grow, and to thrive.

You don't need permission to want more, but sometimes, you have to give that permission to yourself.

Today, I, Coach Elix, and my co-host (and husband), Steven the Medium, are talking about how to break free from guilt, stop playing small, and reclaim your desires boldly and unapologetically.

Because you're not here to settle, but you're here to expand.

Remember: you don't need permission to shine; you just need the courage to say yes to yourself.

✨ What do you secretly want—but haven't dared to claim?

And more importantly; what are you going to do about it?

On this episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, we're talking about how to find peace in the chaos, release perfectionism, and create your own version of holiday joy.

Because the holidays aren't meant to be survived—they're meant to be lived.

Today, we're exploring how to stress less, laugh more, and feel truly present this season.

On this episode, my co-host and husband, Steven the Medium, and I explore the invisible losses—and the power of honoring what we've quietly carried for too long.

We all grieve things no one else sees—dreams that didn't happen, people who changed, and parts of ourselves we've left behind.

What happens when the person who hurt you never says "I'm sorry"?

Do you hold on… or do you let go for your own peace?

We're talking about something every single one of us has struggled with at some point — forgiveness without an apology.

You know those moments when someone hurt you — and never owned it, never said "I'm sorry" — yet you're still carrying the weight?

Today, we're unpacking what it means to truly forgive, even when the other person never makes it right.

Because forgiveness isn't about them — it's about you: your peace, your healing, and your freedom.

This week on our episode, we open up about the power of releasing anger, resentment, and the need for closure — and how forgiveness is not for them; it's for you.

You deserve peace, not pain.

You deserve freedom, not resentment.

You deserve to move forward — even if they never said "sorry."

The question is:-

Who are you still waiting on to make things right?

Today, I invite you to release one thing, one person, or one story that's still weighing you down — and choose peace instead.

What if feedback wasn’t about criticism—but about care?

On this episode of Get a G.R.I.P. with Coach Elix, we're joined by world-renowned leadership coach, author, and friend Donna Karlin, who’s here to change the way we think about feedback.

Her new book “Feedback Unfiltered: Say What Matters. Cut the Noise. Transform Everything” dives deep into how honest, timely feedback—when done right—can radically improve our careers, relationships, confidence, and personal growth.

We avoid hard conversations in our personal lives the same way we do at work—by sugarcoating, staying silent, or blowing up. But Donna is here to show us that feedback, when reframed, becomes one of the most generous, human things we can offer.

We’ll talk about:

  • Why we fear feedback (and how to shift that fear)
  • How to offer truth without harm
  • Why clarity beats comfort
  • And how feedback can deepen connection at work and at home

This episode is for leaders, parents, friends, partners—and anyone ready to say what matters, while there’s still time to change the outcome.

  • [21:32] The express 5-step G.R.I.P. methodology
  • [25:53] Step 1: Creating a legacy or purpose statement in real-time
  • [36:07] The role of hope and faith in your personal vision statement
  • [38:10] Step 2: Being grounded in gratitude
  • [42:52] Step 3: Ask yourself what is holding you back from accomplishing your goals
  • [44:34] Step 4: Ensuring that your actions are aligned with your goals
  • [46:09] Step 5: Turning your goal into a plan

5 Key Takeaways:

  1. A vision without a purposeful action plan will probably flop. Having a vision alone is not enough.

  2. Fear gets in the way of meaningful self-reflection. It is easier to pretend something isn’t there than to address what isn’t. This is why the brain uses fear to protect you from the loss and risks that may happen if you chase your desires.

  3. What is your life legacy? What is your purpose statement? A purpose statement is a statement that reminds you of who you are. Ask yourself, what fuels your commitment? And, how do you want others to remember you? Reframe your answer into an “I am” statement.

  4. When you think about your legacy statement, think about how your legacy helps you feel grateful for your life. In doing so, while in deep thought, allow for meaningful goals to emerge.

  5. If your actions are not aligned with your legacy statement, you have to take corrective action. You must feel accountable for your legacy statement and actively hold yourself to staying true to it.

In this episode, Coach Elix discusses the stress and anxiety people feel around the holiday season. There are probably all sorts of things that make you feel overwhelmed when thinking about the holidays. You are not alone. In fact, 45% of people in the United States would rather skip Christmas altogether. Tune in to find out why you feel stressed around Christmas and how to achieve a stress-free holiday season.

“Money doesn’t bring happiness. Happiness will bring you money”

Timestamps:

  • [11:55] Statistics around nationwide holiday anxiety in the U.S.
  • [14:12] Being stressed by the pressure to give during the holiday season
  • [18:20] Why is stress around Christmas such a widespread problem?
  • [25:42] Travel-related stress during Christmas
  • [27:33] Fear of overeating during the holiday season
  • [28:12] Dealing with family expectations during the holiday season
  • [29:35] First Christmas after the death of a loved one or after a divorce
  • [31:40] Managing mental illness in high-stress times such as the holidays
  • [35:09] 9 actionable tips to cope with holiday anxiety and loneliness

5 Key Takeaways:

  1. Nearly 45% of people in the US report that they would rather skip Christmas. 70% of those people in the U.S. report feeling a lack of time around the holiday season. 69% of people who would prefer to skip Christmas are stressed by being perceived to have a lack of money around the holiday season. (These statistics are pre-COVID.)
  2. Some of the reasons people feel more stressed around the holiday season are: being afraid of being judged from a financial perspective, putting off holiday giving to the last minute, strained family obligations, and not having enough time to do holiday shopping.
  3. The holiday season is about having fun. Worrying too much about your family’s expectations or how people will perceive you takes the joy out of the holidays. We have to recenter and remember that the holiday spirit is, first and foremost, about being together. Pro tip: some of the best presents are presents that come from the heart.
  4. Anxiety around the holiday season is amplified for people who are experiencing mental illness.
  5. A few tips to help you cope with holiday stress: If you feel lonely or stressed during the holiday season, reach out to people or groups who can support you. Remember that holidays don’t have to be perfect. You can honor traditions in many different ways. Try your best to put aside pent-up resentment. At the same time, learn to say “no.” Know what your boundaries and budgets are.

Deborah Horowitz joins Elix and Steven to discuss the difference between rote gratitude and active gratitude. They discuss how to reframe gratitude in a forward-thinking way, why asking “what are you thankful for” is not effective (and what to ask instead), the 9 fundamentals of actively practicing gratitude, and why you shouldn’t just do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Deborah Horowitz is a consultant and clinical training specialist in transformational leadership.

“It’s not happy people who are thankful, but thankful people who are happy.”

Timestamps:

  • [02:00] Life updates
  • [10:14] Episode overview: thankful people are happy people
  • [15:35] Who is Debora Horowitz?
  • [16:49] Framing gratitude in a forward-thinking way

  • [26:11] 9 Fundamentals of active gratitude
  • [30:04] The foundation of gratitude
  • [32:03] Expanding the golden rule “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”
  • [36:47] Listening to connect as part of your gratitude practice
  • [39:54] Making a dedicated effort toward gratitude

5 Key Takeaways:

  1. Gratitude is one of the most scientifically studied proven ways to experience a greater sense of wellbeing in your life.
  2. Asking “what are you thankful for” has become such a routine question that people no longer internalize the grand meaning of the question. Instead, you can ask: “what can I do to make others grateful?”
  3. It’s important to think of gratitude as an active process. You can use the 9 fundamentals of gratitude to apply this, which are: greatness/grace, responsibility/recognition, appreciation, trust, intention, time, understanding, dedication, effort.
  4. Being present is the foundation upon which gratitude is built. Without being present and mindful in your life, it is almost impossible to be grateful. You cannot notice things to be grateful about if you aren’t aware of what is going on.
  5. Having a gratitude practice takes dedication and effort. You cannot passively be grateful. There must be an intention dedicated to gratitude.

In this episode, Coach Elix discusses objective and subjective ways to define success. A key part of living a fulfilling and authentic life is defining what success means to you. Not being clear and honest with yourself about what you value can lead to your life being derailed by the expectations of others. Tune in to understand the anatomy of designing your own definition of success.

Timestamps:

  • [01:52] Episode overview and life updates: reflecting on success during a magical trip
  • [14:06] What happens if you don’t design your own idea of success
  • [23:42] Objective (scorecard) and subjective (foundational integrity) metrics of success
  • [28:21] Having objective success without subjective access (and vice versa)
  • [31:06] Why presence is a key aspect of a successful life
  • [33:38] How Coach Elix defines success
  • [38:57] How 4,000 different people define success
  • [41:09] 4 questions to ask yourself to create a definition of success for yourself

5 Key Takeaways:

  1. If you don’t define your own idea of success, someone else will define your path for you. It can be very easy to get pushed into bowing down to someone else’s version of success.
  2. Objective metrics of success: money in your bank account, job titles, salaries, personal achievements, where you went to school. These metrics do not determine how happy and fulfilled you are in your life.
  3. Subjective metrics of success give you an idea of your happiness and fulfillment levels. These include: having a level of satisfaction with your life, doing meaningful work, being excited to wake up every morning, and experiencing joy in your work and your relationships.
  4. There is nothing wrong with pursuing objective metrics of success. However, it should not be the only thing you value. Without subjective metrics of success, it is extremely challenging to live happily.
  5. Success is not defined by the material things you have, but the kind of life that you lead.

In this episode, Coach Elix shares the story of his experience with caregiver burnout. He shares the story of his mom’s stroke for the first time publicly and how that experience has affected his mental health. Throughout the episode, Elix discusses the vital work of caring for the critically ill, how to spot caregiver burnout, how you can support loved ones experiencing caregiver burnout, and what you can do to prevent caregiver burnout.

Timestamps:

  • [03:46] Episode overview and life updates: caregiver burnout
  • [13:37] Sharing a very personal, heart-wrenching story for the first time publicly
  • [26:46] Being overwhelmed by the fear of the unknown
  • [32:14] Romanticizing caregiving and how it erases the harsh reality of caregiving
  • [33:31] Why many people are caregivers these days
  • [36:32] What is caregiver burnout?
  • [41:35] Signs of caregiver burnout
  • [44:11] Things you can do to prevent caregiver burnout?

5 Key Takeaways:

  1. When unexpected negative events happen, they give you a reality check and put things in perspective for you. They remind you of what really matters.
  2. It’s difficult to find support from doctors in a very complicated healthcare system. Sometimes doctors forget that for them, trauma is business as usual but for us, it is not. Nurses bear the brunt of caregiving in our healthcare system.
  3. Romanticizing caregiving erases the harsh reality caregivers find themselves going through. Caregivers have to deal with a complex health system and a plethora of heavy emotions including loneliness and stress.
  4. As the baby boomer generation continues to age, the number of caregivers will grow. Currently, one out of 5 people in the U.S. is a caregiver. The healthcare system in the U.S. relies on that army of caregivers.
  5. Caregiver burnout is the feeling of emotional depletion. It is a depletion of hope and the ability to be positive. Once you burn out, there is not much you can do for anyone. Caregiver burnout often happens because of a false narrative that you have to do things alone. You need to be able to ask for help.

Your thoughts create stories, which lead to overarching personal narratives, ultimately creating limiting scripts about what you can and cannot do. Tune in to learn what scripts may be limiting you, how your mind may be using scripts to latch onto comfort zones, and how to shift your scripts and replace them with a positive and empowering personal narrative.

“If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.” –Coach Elix

Timestamps:

  • [02:01] Life updates
  • [09:08] Your doubting inner voice when you are making life changes
  • [14:30] Why you need to fact-check your inner voice
  • [17:37] Call-in from Miss K: being aware of your scripts
  • [24:38] How you might sometimes wear your negative thoughts as a badge of honor
  • [28:43] How scripts give you an “out”
  • [32:10] Between breakdowns and breakthroughs
  • [38:55] How and why scripts become automatic (and how to shift your script)

4 Key Takeaways:

  1. As you evolve, you need to fact-check what the voice inside your head tells you about yourself. You have to ask yourself: "is this story in my head serving me or limiting you?"
  2. Examples of limiting scripts you may be using to define yourself are: "I have to be perfect," "I’m too young/old," "my life is harder than anyone else’s," and "I’m just not that type of person."
  3. Scripts can provide you with an "out" of opportunities that you actually want to pursue. You can feel your fears, you just have to make sure not to feed your fears. Having an insight into what you’re going through gives you a choice to hold on to what is limiting you or letting it go.
  4. To shift your script, you have to complete your old scripts. One way to do that is to write a letter to yourself saying everything you need to say to put an end to the old script. After writing the letter, you can burn it—it can be quite cathartic to do so.

If you’re hooked on being right, this episode is for you. Throughout the show, Coach Elix explains the neuroscience behind the human desire to be right and where this need originates from. He shares 6 signs that you may be addicted to being right, and provides coaching on how to manage that addiction.

Timestamps:

  • [01:50] Why Halloween is so exciting for Steven, Elix’s mom’s 96th birthday, and more life updates
  • [12:23] Episode overview: are you addicted to being right?
  • [20:19] Why you should want to manage your addiction to rightness
  • [23:43] Why do we feel good when we are right?
  • [31:29] The next time you find yourself wanting to be right, ask yourself THIS question
  • [39:20] Why you want your body to produce less dopamine and more oxytocin
  • [46:14] 6 signs that you have an addiction to being right
  • [49:22] Managing the addiction of being right

5 Key Takeaways:

  1. Being right is not wrong. Being right is perfectly ok. What is wrong is being addicted to being right, regardless of the context. When you feel powerfully right, you lack the perspective to connect with others and be open to their point of view.

  2. The most damaging response is oftentimes the most common response because of our primitive brain’s fight, flee, protect, defend, response. This prevents honest and productive sharing of information. Our brain responds to wanting to be right.

  3. When you have that urge to be right, ask yourself: what is this costing you? Is it costing you happiness, fulfillment, or joy? Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?

  4. Your desire to be right originates from something in your past. It is a learned trait and it can be unlearned.

  5. Some signs that you have an addiction to being right are: getting amped up about an opinion or point of view, telling someone how to do something, and interpreting or diagnosing other people’s thoughts or behaviors.

In this episode Coach Elix and Steven discuss how to stop giving regret too much space in your life. Regret is inevitable. You will not stop experiencing it. But, you know what you can do? Recognize it when it creeps up and reframe the toxic narrative it tries to infect your life with.

This episode will give you an introduction to the art of letting go of regret and help you take away power from the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" voice in your head.

Timestamps:

  • [02:00] Life updates!
  • [09:06] Why does regret feel so heavy?
  • [15:26] Is regret necessarily a bad feeling?
  • [16:33] Suffering is optional.
  • [20:01] The common regrets most people have.
  • [25:17] Why do we feel regret?
  • [28:37] Why is it so hard to let go of regret?
  • [33:30] How do you stop thinking of "what ifs"?
  • [40:12] Practical ways to let go of regrets.

4 Key Takeaways:

  • We feel more intensely towards the things we didn’t do rather than the things we did do. However, holding on to the narratives behind our regrets is a choice. Suffering because of regrets is optional.
  • We have regrets because we compare our choices to an ideal: what we think we should be, what we think we should have done, etc. We have an idea in our minds of what could have been. It is an invented narrative.
  • When we believe we’ve made a mistake, we feel like our identity has been attacked. However, it is impossible for your actions to always be aligned with your ideal self — simply because life happens!
  • Regret is disempowering. The past is done. Focus on what matters NOW. Hit the pause button when the regret narrative creeps up on you. Interrupt the narrative. Embrace the different parts of who you are. Recognize that you will always fall into the pattern of "disappointing" the ideal version of yourself.

We all think we are great listeners. But, are we really? Listening is a forgotten skill. One we often take for granted. If you are committed to being an extraordinary partner or friend, listening is perhaps one of the greatest tools at your disposal.

Tune in to learn exactly what it means to listen to CONNECT rather than merely to understand.

Timestamps:

  • [02:00] Life updates!
  • [04:30] Today’s topic: what great listeners actually do.
  • [05:42] You cannot be listening well without doing this.
  • [08:39] Listening from the lens of objection and judgment vs. listening from the lens of connecting (Simone Biles example).
  • [15:23] What does it take to truly be able to listen well to your partner?
  • [17:47] What does it mean to listen to connect?
  • [20:41] An example of bad listening skills from the TV show Golden Girls.
  • [25:50] We assume that we know how to listen, but do we?
  • [30:44] 3 actionable ways to be a better listener ("double-clicking" and more).
  • [39:00] Why are emotionally intelligent people better listeners?
  • [47:08] Your assignment for next time you speak to ANYONE.

4 Key Takeaways:

  • Emotional intelligence helps you become a better listener and more aware of your biases. It allows you to practice self-awareness and know how to regulate it. Self-awareness allows you to be present and thus be an effective listener.
  • When you listen to someone, immerse yourself enough into what the other person’s world is like. Ask yourself: what is this person hoping I will get out of talking to them?
  • Listening builds trust. When judgment creeps up when you are hearing someone speak, replace those thoughts with thinking “what is this person feeling?” “what are the real drivers behind this person’s emotions?”
  • When interacting with someone, try to understand the purpose behind the conversation. This way, you prime yourself for connection. Listening is doing whatever you need to do to get into the other person’s world.

Strategist Kathy Gaalaas joins Coach Elix to discuss how to manage tough situations with grace. Not just by being graceful to other people — but, more importantly, by being graceful to YOURSELF. We often forget about ourselves when we think about grace, but we deserve to treat ourselves with kindness.

Tune in to learn how to be gracious with yourself and not impose too many responsibilities on yourself.

Kathy Gaalaas is a coach and strategist that helps artists, musicians, and small business owners perfect and grow their digital presence.

Timestamps:

  • [02:25] A story aboutSteven that he wouldn’t want me to tell!
  • [06:30] The most common definition of grace.
  • [09:04] Why did Kathy choose to work with artists and musicians?
  • [12:11] How Prince influenced the name of her business.
  • [16:57] What does grace mean to YOU?
  • [19:00] Why is it hard to be gracious to yourself?
  • [24:00] Why do you always feel like you are not doing enough (and how to break out of that).
  • [28:14] How can we define responsibility in a healthy way (without guilt)?
  • [35:24] How do you thank yourself when no one is thanking you?
  • [39:43] Actions you can take today to be more gracious with yourself.
  • [48:15] Rapid fire round with Kathy.

5 Key Takeaways:

  • Your business can only be sustainable if you actually enjoy what you are spending your time doing.
  • It is much easier for us to be gracious with others than it is to be gracious with ourselves. Here are a few things you can do to be more gracious with yourself: Look in your life for someone who made a difference in your life and call them randomly to thank them. Write down 3 things that are unique to you that you add to the world (e.g., I make people laugh). Pick one day every month to dedicate to yourself.
  • You might feel like there is always more to do, and there probably is. However, you have to accept moments for what they are and knowing that this moment will pass. Take a breath and center yourself. Ask yourself: "do I need to react right now or do I need to listen or do I need to observe?"
  • When you think of responsibility, don’t start with blaming yourself or being on the defensive. Step back and ask yourself where you can make the biggest difference and sometimes the best way you can make a difference is by taking care of yourself.
  • Give yourself kudos and know that what you are doing for yourself matters.

Without feeling grateful for what you have, it's almost impossible to live a fulfilled life. But, do you take things for granted without noticing? In this episode, Coach Elix and Steven the Medium discuss how you can live a beautiful and fulfilled life just by being present in the moment.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Why you take things for granted
  • How to stop taking things for granted
  • Practical exercises to train yourself to be present in every moment

“If it’s comfortable, it doesn’t change you.”

Timestamps:

  • [02:00] Life updates!
  • [06:32] Here is why you may be taking things for granted.
  • [10:00] What does it mean to be present?
  • [12:53] 2 questions for you to help you determine if you are present in your life.
  • [14:53] What are the kinds of things that most people take for granted?
  • [16:58] How to remember what actually matters.
  • [22:13] The only thing you can do to STOP taking things for granted (and how your life loses balance).
  • [29:00] A practical exercise to train you to stay present in ANY situation (7 day exercise).
  • [39:53] 4 things you can do everyday to stay present every moment.
  • [43:52] Why you should commit to being present.

4 Key Takeaways:

  • When you don’t stay present in the moment life passes you by. It becomes really easy to take things for granted. We have a tendency, as humans, to assume that tomorrow is guaranteed. The reality is that it really is not. When you are present in the moment, you create an opening for things that you desire to happen.
  • You are most likely to take for granted the steady things in your life. Examples can include your health and family. These things seem permanent, but they aren't. We know this on an intellectual level.
  • If you are living in the present, you will be living a balance. You will be moving with the mothership. Not being present is what upsets the balance in your life.
  • Getting to the present is like climbing a mountain. The top is the present, so think of it is a journey. You need tools to help you climb. One tool is the 7 day exercise (29:00). Another tool is establishing a daily gratitude practice.

Coach Donna Karlin joins Coach Elix to discuss how you can silence your inner critic and amplify your positive voice. Tune in to the episode to learn a very clever way you can realize how unreasonable your inner critic actually is.

Donna Karlin, PCC, CEC, MLE℠, is a well known leadership coach best known as The Shadow Coach. Throughout her career, she has coached TED fellows and leaders of Fortune 100 companies.

“The inner critic is all our insecurities wrapped up in a tight little bow that you hold on to...and it constantly tells you what you lack.” —Donna Karlin

Timestamps:

  • [08:36] Would you allow someone to speak to you like this?
  • [14:07] Who is Donna Karlin?
  • [16:26] Who is your inner critic?
  • [18:25] Why do we allow our inner critic to talk to us in unacceptable ways? (and what to do instead)
  • [21:00] When is our inner critic born?
  • [24:21] How can you help yourself if you don’t have a support system.
  • [26:59] What to focus on even when catastrophic events are happening.
  • [32:44] Things you can do RIGHT NOW to mute your inner critic.
  • [35:37] How to empower people without telling them what to do (and how to get on the TED stage).
  • [39:12] What Donna Karlin learned from partnering up with TED fellows.
  • [40:48] What is the No Ceiling, Just The Sky Institute?
  • [42:01] How the people you surround yourself with can change your life.
  • [46:12] Fire round of questions with Donna Karlin.

4 Key Takeaways:

  • We all have an inner critic. To begin standing up to your inner critic, ask yourself: would you allow someone to talk to you the way your inner critic speaks to you? You can also ask yourself: would you allow someone to talk to someone you love the way your inner critic speaks to you? If the answer is no, why are you allowing yourself to operate based on that myth?
  • We allow our inner critic to speak to us in unacceptable ways because we allow our inner critic to run on autopilot. We don’t question it. Instead, ask yourself: what is the story you want to own of yourself? Are you living it?
  • If you don’t have a support system that already exists, find somebody out there who is struggling and support each other. You have an enormous contribution to give the world. You can make an impact.
  • When negative events take place and your inner critic starts raising their voice, stay focused by going back to your purpose. Focus on what you are here on Earth for. Mute the inner critic by keeping your eye on the bigger picture. Disempower your inner critic by focusing on what you’re good at and leave your weaknesses behind.

“People don’t want to be told what to do. They want to hear what you did that was so mind blowing that they think they have the permission to be mind blowing as well.” —Donna Karlin

Coach Elix and Steven the Medium celebrate Pride Month this episode by reflecting on the Stonewall uprising, the origin of the pride parade, their personal experiences growing up gay, and why being gay is not a lifestyle.

“Queer people don’t grow up as ourselves, we grow up playing a version of ourselves that sacrifices authenticity to minimize humiliation and prejudice.”

Timestamps:

  • [04:40] Why is pride month a whole month?
  • [07:12] What was the Stonewall uprising?
  • [15:06] What was it like to be gay in 1969?
  • [18:12] Is the LGBTQ community fully equal to their heterosexual counterparts now?
  • [20:42] What happened during the Stonewall uprising and why it makes sense that Stonewall had to be owned by the mafia.
  • [24:51] Misconceptions that straight allies have about the LGBTQ community.
  • [26:58] Why do we remember the Stonewall uprising? (the orign of the pride parade)
  • [30:33] Coach Elix’s experience being gay as a young person.
  • [35:46] Steven the Medium’s experience being gay (responding powerfully to a bully).
  • [39:17] The simple reason that explains why being gay is not a lifestyle.
  • [43:35] What you should do if you suspect someone in your life is gay.

3 Key Takeaways:

  • The Stonewall uprising in 1969 was the catalyst for the LGBTQ civil rights movement. Stonewall was a filthy dive bar. It was the only bar that allowed people to fully be themselves without judgement or persecution. It took a lot of pain and suffering to achieve equal rights.
  • LGBTQ persons still face discrimination despite equal rights laws. There has been a lot of progress since 1969, but the fight continues.
  • Being gay is not a lifestyle. A lifestyle is golfing, wanting to cook, wanting to travel, etc. Being gay is being born gay. Nobody chooses to be treated as a second class citizen.

  • TikTok was a great way for the Pelvic Health Ladies to stay connected to their patients during the pandemic.
  • Humor is a great way to share obscure information to a wide audience.
  • Some people think that it is unprofessional for medical professionals to be creating fun social media content, but the best way to silence the naysayers is with your success.

  • If you have a vision but you are stuck, turn it into a list of actionable items.
  • Goals take time to accomplish, you have to be patient in your pursuit to accomplish them.
  • Common isn’t normal!

What going viral online makes you feel and how it empowers you:

“It kind of reinforced to me the power of an idea, that if you get this great idea and you launch with full velocity and put all of your passion and effort and energy behind it then it really can turn into something great and better than you expected.”

Having just gone through an extremely challenging unexpected situation myself, this episode is about navigating unexpected circumstances from a place of power. No matter how stressful an unexpected event may be, there is always light at the other end of the tunnel - especially with the four methods presented in this episode.

Tune in to learn how to correct yourself in real time and find the silver lining in every unexpected event no matter how bad it may seem.

We went through a situation

When life is interrupted, navigating the unexpected

Learn how to correct yourself in real time.

Timestamps:

  • 00:01 We couldn’t get on the plane (life update)
  • 09:23 Talking from real life experience of an unexpected breakdown
  • 12:34 What is the larger meaning behind unexpected breakdowns?
  • 15:37 Our whole world was collectively interrupted! (this is unprecedented)
  • 16:30 What the way you handle unexpected circumstances tells you about yourself.
  • 16:50 The main decision you must make when unexpected things happen.
  • 17:15 What scientific research says about unexpected situations.
  • 18:40 How mindfulness saves you TIME & EFFORT in tough times.
  • 23:25 Dealing with the unexpected from a place of power vs. dealing with the unexpected as a victim.
  • 24:30 4 ways to deal with the unexpected from a place of POWER.
  • 24:47 Way #1: Pause before you act (reaction vs. response).
  • 28:00 An example of something you might be doing unconsciously.
  • 29:20 Way #2 Don’t assume that the things you don’t want are bad.
  • 31:10 An example showing that there is always something to be grateful about even in terrible situations
  • 33:48 Way #3: Plan for everything to turn out well (why I don’t hope for anything)
  • 39:11 Way #4: Trust in your ability that everything will be okay
  • 45:44 This is for my mom, and all the moms out there.

Key Takeaways:

  • There is a larger meaning behind unexpected events that take place in your life. You might not always know yet why something is unfolding the way it is.
  • There is always a silver lining, no matter how bad the situation you find yourself might be. Make an effort to view things positively with intention.
  • Sudden interruptions in your life are an opportunity to practice mindfulness about what works and what may not be working with you.
  • When faced with an unexpected situation, you have one main decision to make: Am I going to keep doing something that I know doesn’t work? Or am I going to make a correction?
  • When negative unexpected events happen, we tend to focus on negative emotions. But, research shows that negative emotions make our brain’s decision making powers less effective. This makes mindfulness in tough situations all the more pressing.
  • Mindfulness in tough situations gets you where you want to be faster! If you let something ruin your day, you lose the day. That is one day longer in a negative situation.
  • Reactions come from an automatic part of your brain. A response is something that you intentionally choose to do. When an unexpected situation happens, as yours: am I reacting or am I responding?
  • If you want a good outcome, you have to plan that outcome. Instead of asking yourself: what if it doesn’t work, ask yourself what if it goes well?

There is a lot more than what you see when a tough situation happens:

“If you only believe in what you see, then you are missing out on three quarters of what we are supposed to experience in this earth school...Trust that everything is going to turn out the way it is supposed to turn out. You don’t need to know how it is happening, or how quickly it is going to turn out, or how it is going to actually be processed. You just have to trust the outcome” - Steven the Medium

We all battle with self doubt, no matter how successful, smart, or talented we are. Best-selling author Natalie Banks joins me this episode to prove it. An award-winning author, she has been aware of her own self-doubt since childhood.

34:42 Even amazing writers have self doubt

35:38 These are the ONLY people you should listen to

38:00 What does getting a grip even mean?

40:00 Ways we can free ourselves from self-doubt

40:16 Way #1 What we resist persists

41:26 Way #2 Be skeptical of your thoughts, they are not reality

41:58 Way #3 Give your inner critic a name, here’s why

42:52 Way #4 Cultivate your sense of purpose, you have to go after what fills you up

44:29 Way #5 Spend time with people who believe in you

46:13 Way #6 Practice self compassion, if you dont you are a bully of your bully

46:44 Way #7 Speak self gratitude everyday

49:18 Self-doubt is a habit, nothing more nothing less.

49:50 How to connect with Natalie

Key Takeaways:

  • Imagine the ending you want in your life and work your way back from there
  • The self doubting voice in your head sounds like you and feels like you. YET, it is not you. It is usually a voice from your childhood.
  • When you hear negative things about you from others or from your inner voice, you can take things one of two ways. You can either say “this person is speaking truth” or you can say “I don’t want to be the person they are describing.”
  • Defining moments can be life sentences where we spend the rest of our lives trying to prove ourselves guilty of ‘not being good enough’ — OR, they can drive your passion.
  • Self-care and self-love are the answer to keeping your self-doubt in check. It is cheesy, but it is true.
  • Don't entertain self-doubt. Silence it straight up. Don't allow yourself to go into the rabbit hole. Don't feed it.
  • Don't ever give value to other people's opinions, no matter if it is positive or negative, unless it comes from somebody who has a stake in your success (NBA champion Brian Scalabrine’s advice to Elix from episode 4).
  • Getting a grip means getting a hold of what you love and not giving up on yourself.
  • If you think you are not good enough, write down that you are not good enough then write 5 things that you are amazing at right next to it. Prove your inner critic wrong.
  • You dont get what you want, you get what you are.

Say this to your inner critic (instead of just calling it a liar):

“I hear you. I hear you don’t feel good enough and I understand why. But, it is not MY reality. My reality is that I have everything it takes.”

How do you silence your inner critic? What works best for you? How do you avoid falling into the rabbit hole? Tell us in the comments!

Also don’t forget: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” -Jim Rohn

Defining moments can be building block of excellence, but they can also derail us. As children, we start creating narratives about our lives. If we are not careful, we may let limiting narratives gain control of our adulthood. In this episode, we discuss how defining moments can act like a double edged sword.

Coach Elix spills the beans on HIS defining moment at age 10 when he felt rejected by his grandma. Tune in to find out how the small moment affected him throughout his childhood and adulthood as well as what happened when he finally confronted his grandma about the event.

This particular story made a high achiever out of Coach Elix, but is that really a good thing?

“I was already a go getter, I was already a high achiever, but this time it was not on top of some story of what I was not.”

Timestamps:

  • [01:44] Episode overview: Harnessing the power of defining moments
  • [09:54] The amazing effect of openly discussing your defining moments (Steven’s experience)
  • [14:29] What is a defining moment?
  • [16:00] Coach Elix’s defining moment story (“I didn’t know I was adopted”)
  • [21:49] The positive side of defining moments (“I was determined to prove otherwise”)
  • [23:55] Are you a hamster stuck in a wheel?
  • [25:30] How your inner child might be managing the adult you are.
  • [27:55] Confronting his grandma (and what he was surprised to find out).
  • [33:17] Reinventing your life after resolving defining moments.
  • [38:39] Three things you can do to recognize defining moments.
  • [44:44] What would happen if you don’t take action to resolve defining moments?

Key Takeaways:

  • Sharing your defining moments openly can lead you to reevaluate them and gives you a fresh perspective on your life.
  • Getting a sense of awareness of what the defining moments of your life are gives you the clarity you need when making decisions in your life.
  • Defining moments have the power to define us. They also have the power to transform our lives.
  • Even though negative defining moments can lead to seemingly positive things like being an overachiever, you might find yourself like a hamster stuck in a wheel because you are basing all of your positive achievements on the basis of a negative event.
  • “If you do not define a defining moment, it is going to define you”
  • There are three things you can do to recognize defining moments: (1) embrace adversity and stay resilient by quickly finding purpose; (2) acknowledge fear and learn to quickly recalibrate; and (3) create a solution based action plan. Insight is not enough, action is also necessary.

In this episode, we discuss what defining moments are and how your inner child may be controlling the adult you are today. Throughout the episode, Steven the Medium delves deep into his defining moment. He was only a child when his father committed suicide. This is that story. Unpacked.

There may be two people inside you, which one is in control?

If you feel life is happening to you, then this episode was recorded with you in mind. Tune in to start reinventing the narrative that may be holding you back.

“When you know that something is there then you can choose, because when you know that something is there then you can choose”

  • [42:54] What to ask yourself to discover what defining moments took place in your life?
  • [45:47] Why you MUST find out what defining moments happened in your life.

Key Takeaways:

  • You have to have enough self awareness to be able to spot defining moments as they are happening.
  • Defining moments are points in your life when you are urged to make pivotal decisions about yourself and who you are and when you experience something that changes you. They usually make you challenge your norms and beliefs.
  • Often, when we experience defining moments they accompany negative events. However, transformative moments can also be positive.
  • If we do not unpack our defining moments and understand the effect they have on us, lots of our life events and behaviours may be built on top of or influenced by how these defining moments have shaped our character and beliefs.
  • To find out what defining moments took place in your life ask yourself “what happened to me” and try to go as far back in the past as possible, then ask yourself “am I that person?”

Mark Worster, co-founder of The Green Nurse, joins Coach Elix to share his rock bottom story. His main message? Rock bottoms can be the unexpected catalyst you need to start building a life you love.

After a series of catastrophic events, Mark was on the verge of committing suicide. After checking in to a facility, he heard magic words by a caretaker. Words that would ultimately change his fate for the better.

“I heard that voice that said 'you’re not done.'”

But, words was not all it took. Mark worked extremely hard to reinvent himself and, in this episode, tell us everything he did to become the successful entrepreneur and author he is today.

Tune in to learn how you can use your own negative events to accelerate towards a life you WANT to wake up for.

Mark Worster is the CEO of The Green Nurse. He is also a certified yoga intructor, author and speaker. He is the author of the book Absolutely Fking Amazing: Living a Life You Love, an Amazon number one best seller.

Timestamps:

  • [11:07] Who is Mark Worster?
  • [15:08] Building a successful family business from the ground up.
  • [16:18] Why did he sell his profitable business?
  • [18:56] Hitting absolute rock bottom.
  • [21:40] A sentence that saved his life and turned it around in just one weekend.
  • [25:50] Why hitting rock bottom can be a blessing and a catalyst.
  • [27:12] How to figure out your path after hitting rock bottom?
  • [28:20] Stepping into what you want to do.
  • [29:37] How to make peace with negative events.
  • [30:59] If you say “but X person is different,” listen to this.
  • [33:55] Why did Mark start his company?
  • [35:28] There’s so much unpredictability in the world, what should you do?
  • [39:11] How unique is your experience?
  • [40:51] How to connect with Mark Worester, Green Nurse
  • [41:46] Rapid fire questions
  • [46:04] Why do people struggle with forgiveness?

Key Takeaways:

  • You can build a successful business and yet discover that it is not your calling and that it does not align with your passions and vision for your life.
  • At crossroads, ask yourself: can there be more to life than this?
  • Hitting rock bottom can be a blessing. When life seems to be going fine it is so hard to step out and look for areas of improvement. However, when traumatic events happen you have no choice but reconsider your life and ask yourself how things can be better than they are today.
  • Coming from a place of trauma, you can go into places that you could have never imagined.
  • The story you create is itself what creates your life. You have the ability to create any story you want for yourself. You choose what gets in your way and you choose where it can take you.
  • The person of power doesn’t wait for a decisive moment, the person of power is decisive in the moment.
  • Perfect happiness is not being attached to any outcome.

Remember, you can do ANYTHING:

“There are lots of people out there who suffer from mental illness that say I can’t do what I want to do because I am flawed and you know what, that’s just a story, it’s not the truth. The reality is that you can do anything you want to do, you just have to step into it.”

Donna Karlin, who's coached Fortune 100 leaders and TED Fellows, joins me this episode. She is far more than an accomplished business woman. She also survived cancer and a tornado that destroyed her home. This is why you can trust her when she says: you can control your story, even if you can’t control the circumstances.

In this episode, Donna discusses how we can face life head-on and be masters of our own stories no matter what we've gone through. The way we narrate our lives — to ourselves and others — literally shapes what they become. That’s both the danger of our stories... and their power.

Tune in to find out 3 actionable steps you can take to get back on track.

Timestamps:

6:02 Why wouldn’t you rewrite your story into a bestseller?

8:15 The myths you probably tell yourself

9:18 Is the story you tell yourself serving you?

14:10 Who is Donna Karlin?

15:44 Do you own your story, or do you own someone else’s story of you?

17:50 Should you learn from the past?

18:57 How can you find out more of who you are?

21:23 Should you care about what others think?

22:50 Why do we always think negatively of ourselves?

26:58 Hanging on to judgement.

28:07 You can’t walk in someone’s shoes.

30:36 Don’t be like me, do this instead.

34:26 What is dancing with life?

35:54 One question that can change your life: the "what-if" question.

40:05 What if you fail?

40:51 How you can learn more about yourself.

43:12 The best way to reach Donna.

47:27 A gratitude challenge for you.

Key Takeaways:

  • There are plenty of things that we cannot change about our past but we can change the story we tell ourselves about our past.
  • We don’t always have control over the circumstances that we face, but we have control over how we relate to these circumstances.
  • If you don’t create your story, somebody else is going to do it for you.
  • The best way to figure out who you are is in conversation with others. The role of a coach is to help reveal you to yourself.
  • Take away blame from others and suspend judgement so that you can see yourself more clearly. Ask yourself: how are you helping yourself?
  • Look at what life throws to you head on and ask yourself “what can I do with it,” not in spite of it.
  • Instead of asking "what if you fail" ask "what if you could?"
  • Ask the people who know you best, what are they seeing in you that you are not seeing?

How you will own your story:

“How many times do we go through our lives where we adopt the stories that our parents have of us, our siblings have of us, that are so outdated it's not to be believed?...It’s really important to craft the story not only that you want people to know of you, but that you want to live.” -Donna Karlin

What would you do if you knew you wouldn’t fail? What is the first step you will take to start rewriting your story. Tell us in the comments!

The world is changing because leaders are changing and leadership is changing too. Leaders are more diverse today than ever before. Leadership is more centered around empathy and collaborative listening. This is creating an undeniable shift in the way things work.

Psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Hull joins me to discuss the new leadership landscape, the science explaining the most effective leadership approaches, and his new book Flex: The Art and Science of Leadership in a Changing World. Dr. Hull is a psychology instructor at Harvard Medical School and an executive coach. He has worked with plenty of high profile clients such as HSBC, Tiffany & Co, Unilever, Dropbox, and Reuters.

45:43 Reflections & Day 14 of the gratitude challenge

Key Takeaways:

  • A leader is somebody who creates the opening for others to be their best self.
  • We all have the ability to be leaders everyday in the many different things we do.
  • When it comes to leadership, emotional intelligence is more important than being smart.
  • Learning to be more flexible and know when to be authoritative and when to be a curious collaborative listener is one of the keys to being successful in today’s world.
  • Creating an environment where people have a sense of autonomy and a sense of connection are crucial to the success of any team.
  • To be better leaders and better people we have to learn our strengths and learn how we can grow. Listening to others collaboratively and being empathetic are great ways to accomplish that.
  • Everything we know about leadership is outdated. Today, leaders are more diverse than they used to be in all senses of the word. For example, in the past an introvert would not have been thought of as a leader - this is not true in today’s world.
  • The key to developing your agility is to view your stumbles and mistakes as learning opportunities. There is no such thing as failure.
  • Leaders are both born and made. Everyone is born a leader, but not everyone puts in the work to fulfil their potential as a leader.

Here is why the conversation about leadership applies to you:

“Anyone that doesn’t think of themselves as a leader but can step up and be involved with their community, with non profits, anywhere where you are out doing good work in the world, you are probably more of a leader than you even realize” - Dr. Jeffrey Hull

Do you think of yourself as a leader? What do you think people misunderstand about leadership?

Key Takeaways:

  • There is a lot of scientific research backing up the effectiveness of gratitude.
  • When you switch from feeling victimized to feeling grateful, you activate the prefrontal cortex of the brain and transform your thoughts into positive ones.
  • If you are grateful, you get rid of negative thoughts in your mind. Gratitude immediately transforms thoughts from negative to positive.
  • Practicing gratitude cultivates greater emotional intelligence.
  • The four components of emotional intelligence are: self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation, and understanding others.
  • Upward spiral theory teaches us that when we start thinking about positive emotions, it leads to positive behaviors, which then lead to positive emotions and so on. This is how you can change your life.
  • Emotional intelligence is the most vital characteristic of an effective leader.
  • Gratitude helps you boost motivation, energize your stamina, improves patience, and keeps you focused on abundance rather than what you may lack.
  • There is no right way to practice gratitude, just do what works for you.
  • A few practices that invite gratitude into your life include: keeping a gratitude journal, writing a gratitude letter to someone (it can be someone who is around or someone who isn’t), finding gratitude in your surroundings, and doing a guided meditation.
  • Managers and leaders should invite gratitude into meetings by starting the meeting with the question: "What’s going well for us?" Or "What are we doing right?" And discuss how they can elevate it into the next level of greatness.
  • Being grateful is not just about telling yourself things. You must add practices that reinforce your gratitude and create openings for yourself.

Coach Elix’s gratitude practice that you can copy, or make up your own:

“I am happy and grateful that I am living the life of my dreams. I am living the life that I want. I am living my best life and I am a magnet for abundance, prosperity, health, happiness, wealth, and success in all areas of my life. Thank you.”

You can repeat it as many times as you like and go into examples of things you have and grateful for. Look around your surroundings for inspiration.

What do you do to invite gratitude into your life? Which practice will you be using throughout our 30-day gratitude challenge? Tell us in the comments!

You’ve definitely heard of emotional intelligence, but have you heard of Conversational Intelligence®?

Join me and Dr. Richard Glaser on this episode to get the introduction you need.

Dr. Richard’s late wife Judith Glaser coined the term Conversational Intelligence® and was a pioneer in the field — so you are really hearing about this from the experts. Dr. Richard Glaser is the founder of CreatingWe, a 41 year old consulting and coaching company that works with CEOs to reshape corporate conversations.

Mastering Conversational Intelligence® is key to transforming your conversations from fear-based to trust based. Tune in to understand the neuroscience behind how you feel in conversations and how you can use this new understanding to have better conversations.

“The brain does not speak French or English, it speaks neuroscience” - Judith Glaser

Timestamps:

07:52 What is Conversational Intelligence®?

13:18 Who is Dr. Richard Glaser?

15:39 If you've never heard of Conversational Intelligence®, this is what you need to know

20:25 A simple technique you can use to make your next difficult conversation easier

24:10 Three levels of conversation (which one do you engage in most?)

30:42 How Burberry put itself on the map using richer conversations

35:33 Moving beyond polarized political conversations

38:28 How do we listen to people without judging them?

44:05 What can corporations do to change biases?

47:00 What is moving from "I" to "We" thinking and why you must do it

51:00 How to connect with Dr. Richard Glaser

Key Takeaways:

  • Conversational Intelligence® is learning how to shift from fear-based conversations to trust based conversations.
  • Conversational Intelligence® is very powerful because it has a strong scientific foundation. It is based on anthropology and neuroscience.
  • When questioning your biases, sit back and ask yourself, “how did I get to that belief system?”
  • There are three levels of conversations: Level 1 is sharing information; Level 2 is advocating for what you believe (make sure not to prophesize your beliefs); and Level 3 is asking questions that open up a dialogue (builds trust, makes you feel you are listened to and creates safe space for innovation and creativity)
  • Double-clicking is a useful technique to help you overcome difficulty in conversations. It is asking questions such as, “can you tell me more about that?” Essentially, it revolves around asking questions you don't have answers to so you can understand where somebody else is coming from.
  • Diffusing tensions in conversations through asking questions helps you understand the person you are talking to. By moving closer into their space, you are able to make the conversation more positive.
  • When you understand how chemicals affect your brain in conversations, you can fight imbalances and shift from having fear-based conversations to trust-based conversations.

This is what happens in your brain when you feel attacked in a conversation:

“Amygdala Hijack is what people go through when they are attacked. You can be attacked in many ways, not just physically. You can be attacked by being ignored, you can be attacked by being insulted, and so on. You get the same reaction, you get that cortisol level that rises up, and it makes you react in a way that you might not want to react in.” - Dr. Richard Glaser, Ph.D.

Had you heard of Conversational Intelligence® before? What techniques do you use to have calmer and more productive conversations? How will you use your new knowledge about Conversational Intelligence® to regulate your future conversations?

Key Takeaways:

  • G.R.I.P. stands for Greatness Requires Intention and Purpose, it is a 4-step methodology giving you access to move towards your goals.
  • Only once you connect with your purpose will you be able to commit to your goals. Not having a purpose is like driving a car without a destination and just burning gas along the way.
  • When you start connecting with your purpose, you start to desire more out of life.
  • Questions you can ask yourself to start discovering your purpose: "When do I feel most vibrantly alive?" and "What do I feel drawn to?"
  • When most people are asked “what is one thing you really want to do” they begin to resist even committing to something because fear is so strong in the background.
  • Learning to visualize your purpose is a practical way to move yourself away from fear and engage in trust instead.
  • When you talk about your future and think about what is possible, you change the neurochemistry in your mind and body.
  • Training your brain to visualize your future requires practice, it is not a one time practice, it is an exercise you need to engage with regularly to get more intimate with your purpose
  • If you fake it until you make it for long enough, your brain will begin to think it is real. You can approach fulfilling your purpose in that way.
  • Some people may not like what you do, that’s ok. Concern yourself with the people who do like what you do.
  • Fear is designed to keep you safe and when you are safe nothing happens. But, that’s the issue: nothing happens.
  • The words you say to yourself have the power to change your fate.

This is the power of the words you tell yourself:

“There is an abundance of everything, an abundance of opportunity, you just have to learn to speak it. If you don’t believe me, tomorrow morning wake up and say “Today I’m going to have a shitty day” and let me know how that day works out for you.” - Coach Elix

51:50 Connecting with White Mamba

Key Takeaways:

  • Athletes are great role models in getting comfortable with the uncomfortable.
  • Flipping the narrative, reframing a negative narrative into a positive one, is a great strategy to get comfortable with the uncomfortable.
  • Don’t worry about what people think, it is more important that the people you work with respect you.
  • What people think matters, but only those who have a stake in your success. You can’t please everybody, but you can please those who care about you.
  • Passion without direction doesn’t lead you anywhere.
  • Look at what is around you and find an environment that is convenient and conducive to what you want in life.
  • Finding a great environment is key to an athlete’s success. It’s the first step you must take.
  • The people around you can help propel you forward, even if you don’t grow up around money.
  • Finding the right environment is not about finding a wealthy or luxurious environment. It is about finding a healthy place to thrive.
  • You get to choose your environment, no matter how hard the circumstances are.
  • Having a grip on life means you are connected with something you love and in the midst of whatever the breakdown is, you find a way to move forward.
  • Your life feels happier and lighter when you are doing something you are passionate about, no matter what else may be in the background.
  • If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.

Living a life of passion is the best life you can give yourself:

“It is good in life that you get an opportunity to do something you love. So, if that entails you working your tail off on something you maybe don't like so that you can do something that you do like, then that's fine. I do believe that your life has a different lens to it when you are living a life of passion. The grass looks greener, the trees look better, the weather is warmer, the skies look bluer.” - Brian Scalabrine

How do you create a good environment for yourself? How do you try to flip negative narratives into positive ones? Tell us in the comments!

Guided by curiosity and a courageous mindset, James Mamary left his family healthcare business to fulfill his dreams of owning a distillery. He's since partnered with NBA champion Brian "White Mamba" Scalabrine on a popular ready to drink canned cocktail line. In this episode, he takes us through how the unexpected circumstances of 2020 helped him connect with his purpose leading him to take advantage of new opportunities.

James Mamary, a former healthcare executive, now runs Crooked Oak Distillery with his wife Melissa and in partnership with the Boston Celtics' Brian Scalabrine.

44:30 Mark’s anecdote: doing something he thought he couldn’t.

46:03 Follow your curiosity to find your purpose.

47:11 The 6 rules of learned bravery (do these to become a better version of yourself).

Key Takeaways:

  • The most important things in saving yourself from a downward spiral is to be kind to yourself.
  • People get caught up on “anything is possible” in the negative sense rather than in the positive sense. Because of the pandemic, people have come to expect more negativity.
  • If you want to win your own game, you have to get on the court. You cannot stay on the sidelines wishing for something.
  • Your mindset can be infectious, it does not only affect you it can also impact those around you.
  • Changing your mindset can be as simple as telling yourself: failure is not an option.
  • Pursuing what you want requires bravery, bravery is taking action in the face of fear.
  • Things you can do to shift your mindset: connecting with purpose, shifting negative conversations into positive conversations, and having the courage to move forward.
  • Part of leadership is getting comfortable surrounding yourself with the right team and not doing everything yourself.
  • You define what winning means in your book. It doesn’t have to be starting a business. It can be starting school or shifting to another career. You decide what your life looks like.
  • Curiosity is a key element in discovering what your passion is.
  • To move forward you need bravery. Here are the 6 rules of learned bravery: connect with purpose (what is you "why"), take off your mask (be authentic), be optimistic (be grateful), stop comparing yourself to others, get comfortable with the uncomfortable, get better at willpower.
  • Ask yourself: What is the unimaginable good that you can create for yourself and for your life?

Advice to anyone who is struggling right now:

“There’s opportunity everywhere, look around and it's there you just have to take a deep breath and center and look around and it's not traditional opportunity...you know capitalism is always about creative destruction. So, just because things are falling down around you doesn’t mean there’s not an opportunity to advance. You just have to be comfortable pivoting towards that new opportunity. It's not ever going to be easy, even in good times.” - James Mamary

42:07 If you are having these conversations, you are playing a winless game.

47:12 What is a winless game and how to stop playing them.

50:00 How I got my power back.

Key Takeaways:

  • G.R.I.P stands for Greatness Requires Intention and Purpose. So, if you are telling yourself to "get a grip," reframe it in that way.
  • The circumstances are what the circumstances are, but who you are in those is what you have control of.
  • When you feel a sense of anxiety, it has less to do with the facts of our lives and more to do with the narrative you tell yourself.
  • In the face of despair ask yourself: what is factual about my circumstances and what is part of the narrative I tell myself.
  • When you give way to negative voices in your head, you are playing a winless game. Negative voices are designed to lead you to nothing but more of the same.
  • Coaching only works if you take it seriously and put in the work.
  • “Being realistic is the most commonly travelled road to mediocrity. Why would you be realistic? What's the point of being realistic?” - Will Smith
  • Breakdowns are necessary. They give us the opportunity to learn. What you have to do is keep moving in the face of the breakdown.
  • Words create reality. What you speak is what you get.
  • If you take a shot, you may win and you may lose but you cannot win if you don’t go on the field and take a shot.
  • You must play out your life with a commitment to winning rather than an attachment to winning.

Extraordinary living begins with knowing what you can control:

“So that's not to say that we should dismiss, you know, our current reality. What I'm saying is that the circumstances are going to be whatever the circumstances are. That's just how it is today. It happens to be sunny and beautiful. Tomorrow could be stormy. You could create a different story about it but that's not going to change the circumstances. It is what it is. However who you are going to be in the face of that is what you have control of. It is where you have the power to reframe, the power to change, that conversation” - Coach Elix

How do you speak to yourself? What do you tell yourself as soon as you wake up? Tell us in the comments!
