In this episode, Hoots delves into the spiritual dimensions of both business and personal growth. Drawing inspiration from Dr. Bob Emiliani's book, Management Mysterium: The Quest for Progress, he shares how this book has framed his understanding of the spiritual side of the construction industry. No this is not what you’re thinking when it comes to religion! Think more broadly…

Hoots then takes us on a journey through Eckhart Tolle's book, The Power of Now, discussing how being present in the moment has become a profound aspect of his life. He explores the concept of separating oneself from the being and reflects on the role beliefs play in shaping our experiences.

A significant part of the discussion revolves around Tolle’s concept of the "pain body" and its influence on responses, especially in the construction world. Hoots shares how he's been intentional about being present, not just in business but also in his personal relationships. He talks about his own pain body of being short-tempered and too quick to respond with anger.

The episode also touches on practical steps, including the incorporation of mindfulness practices like meditation into daily routines. Hoots discusses the transformative effects of these practices on his life and urges listeners to consider the power of intentional choices. He even gives a cheat code on what has helped him become more mindful over the last several weeks.

Join Hoots in this enlightening episode as he explores the spiritual side of construction, offering valuable insights into the art of being present and its positive impact on personal and professional development.

This episode of Hoots on The Ground, Lean Builder Nation gets an introduction to the man behind the stories on LinkedIn, Mr. Matt Ohley! (Note: Not OH-LAY!, Oh-lee!)

Matt talks about the challenges he faced growing up in the legal system! He talks a lot about living in the present time, not in the past and not in the future, but in the present. He goes through how he discovered the importance of this concept and how he goes about accomplishing this difficult principle.

Matt discusses the real life of working in the trades and giving your body for the project’s sake. He gives us an example of when he was HIM! Hoots prompts Matt to talk more about the time he built an intricate drainage project that he had to take over from someone else.

Matt talks about how he broke through some of the things he suffered. He gets vulnerable about discovering common patterns in his life that he wasn’t fond of and how he challenged his 43-year-old self to make some changes. When he started talking to a professional, he was able to have success with making positive changes in his life.

From there he started to read and learned how to be human and navigate this thing called life! Matt lets the viewers better understand how he was able to deal with his big issues. He recommends a book called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. “You are not your mind” is one of the major takeaways that Hoots has and is still thinking about as these show notes are being typed up! You are not your thoughts. You can observe and control what you think about. This concept gets easier with practice.

Matt runs us through a practical example of what his days look like. The first thing he does is hit the snooze button at 3:30 am, so don’t confuse him with Jocko or David Goggins! His meditation routine is the most important part of his day to get it in the right mindset and place to take on the day! From barefoot standing on the ground to breathing techniques and cold shower treatments, he has experimented with it all! No matter what, he starts the day by being present with himself!

Hoots and Matt discuss the Hawthorne Effect to increase production within the construction industry. To better understand, tune in to the whole episode to catch some of the wisdom that Matt is laying down.

This is a must-watch episode of “Hoots on the Ground” with No Bullshido as we highlight ‘The Manny Hoyo!’ Manny is a Senior Superintendent with Skanska who works in the Boston area and shares how he spreads his gifts and talents to the world. Manny talks about how his upbringing has helped him become a better superintendent in the field. He also talks about being a senior superintendent with anxiety and being introverted, both require a daily battle.

Manny dives into his recommendations for a Clemson course titled, “Building High Performing Teams” that Hoots is developing with other leaders within the university. Manny recommends that psychological safety and de-escalating tension would be at the top of the list of topics to cover in that course. Manny and Hoots dive into the hierarchy of construction and both dare to scratch the surface of this real-life concept in the industry.

Manny talks about the phrase “command and control” and how there is a place and a time for that philosophy of management, but there are better ways most of the time. Those times and places where command and control matter include safety incidents or owner-strict delivery schedules and processes. Hoots coins “The Manny Rule”: Treat people like you should! Manny also challenges the phrase “hurt people,” as he comes from a hurt background and does everything he can not to spread that hurt.

Manny remembers a project where he was a young assistant superintendent, and he helped come up with a much better plan to move a 22,000lb masterpiece of a painting. This painting was a Fresco painting of the men and women who built the museum that Manny’s team was renovating. Instead of relocating the painting using rollers, Manny’s idea of moving it with a crane proved to be the smart way to put less stress on the wall. Manny talks about the environment that was created around him that allowed him the courage to speak up in the moment with that idea.

Manny says, “Be a croissant, not a bagel!” Tune in to find out exactly what that means. Hoots questions if we are starting to discuss Emotional Intelligence!?! Comment below and let us know if that’s what we got into!

As Manny sails boats in his free time, Hoots asks him to better understand how sailing relates to scheduling and Lean Construction. Manny and Hoots close the podcast with a quick discussion on “respect for people” and what the phrase means. Manny also shouts out Chris Kelly, one of his construction idols, who taught him the most within the industry. And don’t use the phrases “I, me, or mine” or “progress over perfection” around Manny.

Looking forward to the feedback from his podcast with this Master Builder, Manny Hoyo!

In this episode of The Lean Builder’s Hoots on the Ground podcast, we get to know James Glass with Turner Construction out of the Dallas, TX office. James started in the industry as a laborer, and he has learned much from his time supporting The Boy Scouts of America. He is still involved to this day without having children or grandchildren involved. His 40+ year career path in the construction industry took him from a laborer to a senior superintendent running large-scale work.

James gives his advice on the best path to get started in the construction industry in today’s market! James takes us down his personal Lean Construction journey—both positive and negative. He talks about how Lean failed on his first project but by continuing to apply Lean, the process and principles have benefitted his career tremendously. James makes the statement, “You cannot force the project to fit Lean, you must modify Lean to make Lean fit the project.” He gives some great tips on how to get Lean moving forward quickly on your project, especially on your first attempt.

Many of the best aspects of Lean thinking are actions or ideas that he has been doing for a while, but now with Lean, he has words for the process or tool. Being able to have a common language with other superintendents helps make his processes better. James dives into how Lean is much more than the Last Planner System®. James practices and uses the Lean tools but refuses to use the Japanese word of Ohno Circle; instead, he refers to these as the Observation Circle.

James talks about how patience and respect are key to getting things done but also knows the days when you must speak up and be more direct. Lean is one tool to help people change (and embrace change) on construction projects. James talks about how we only must manage three things in construction: money, risk, and relationships.

James talks about how the old-school, traditional way of thinking stays right on his shoulder and how it still takes effort today to bottle that up and find a better way. A great episode for anyone trying to convert an old-school, traditional-thinking superintendent!

This is a can’t miss episode of The Lean Builder’s Hoots on the Ground podcast! During this episode, Julie Dolan, Brian Winningham, and Adam Hoots summarize their findings and learnings from the previous Construction Suicide Prevention episodes (check out Episodes 65-67 on our Podcasts page to give them a listen).

The team uses a liberating structure known as “WHAT? SO WHAT? NOW WHAT?”

They run through the experience that they just had together – the What, while they discover the So What of the conversation and turn each of those learnings into action by completing the Now What category. The learnings are real and come from real people, with real experiences, on real project sites. All of us are working together to make the construction industry a better place for learning.

By listening to this episode, you can capture all the takeaways from the previous episodes that were issued to date. With the help of Manny Hoyo, Buddy Brumley, Sam Sinclair, and Joe Pryor, the team was able to unearth some amazing nuggets and examples of how to spread kindness on project sites. That is the word that came to fruition naturally in every episode – KINDNESS! The industry is lacking kindness.

The Now What concluded the episode with Adam Hoots making the promise to submit a research paper to the ASC International conference. Julie is going to start putting together a coloring book of images that promote spreading kindness through the industry. Brian made the commitment to write a book on how to insert kindness into the industry.

Listeners, we are asking you to hold each of us accountable for getting these projects done in a timely manner! Please feel free to reach out to us and ask how the commitments are coming!

Thank you for tuning into this amazing session.

In this episode of The Lean Builder’s “Hoots on the Ground” podcast host Adam Hoots introduces The Lean Builder nation to Ms. Heather Ormonde.

Heather talks about her beliefs in Lean running so deep that she had two babies in one pregnancy!! Heather has been practicing Lean for over 10 years and has made every LCI Congress since 2014 and has served as the Oklahoma CoP Leader for LCI since 2015 (though she is happy to relinquish that role for those in OK interested in stepping up). She shares updates on some of the trade-focused programs and trainings that they offer. Heather is a staple in the Lean Construction community.

You must stay around to the end, where Heather releases some brand new, hot off the press, news! We won’t put it in the show notes, so you must stick around and listen to how you can help support Heather. (Check out 54 minutes in to hear to news!)

Heather has worn many hats throughout her career in construction. She is a Six Sigma green belt and obtained her master’s degree from Oklahoma University. Heather loves to travel and played roller derby for a long time! She says that it’s a great way to release stress and frustration from the project site.

Heather gets vulnerable as she discusses her grandfather and his life’s motto that she learned while playing a game with him towards the end of his life. She also discusses the real-life jobsite conditions that workers are being forced to work in day to day. She likens that to a study called The Milgram Experiment.

Heather discusses her own journey of learning about how she was acting on project sites. As a project owner’s representative, one of her GCs called her out for ‘not trusting’ them. Tune in to see how she handled that and the adjustments she made throughout her career to make her a better builder! She enlightens us on how she found her why – to help and inspire people to achieve positive change – and how she helps others find their why.

In this episode of The Lean Builder’s “Hoots on the Ground” podcast, host Adam Hoots introduces a group of guests who share their experiences and insights on Lean construction. Joining Brian Winningham and Julie Dolan this week are Manny Hoyo, a senior superintendent with Skanska USA, and Sam Sinclair, a field superintendent with E.L. Pruitt. As a fun icebreaker, Adam asks each guest to introduce themselves and share a type of food they do not like.

Brian “Ranger Winnie” Winningham kicks off the discussion by reading his original story, Honey Wagon Driver. It’s about respect for people and how oftentimes a person’s role and value go unnoticed until that person is not there.

This episode highlights the taboo nature of discussing mental health in the construction industry. Manny explains that openly addressing mental health or acknowledging when one is not feeling well is uncommon in the industry. He points out that there is a cultural expectation to leave emotions and feelings behind and give maximum effort every day. This mentality of suppressing emotions and prioritizing work over mental well-being can have detrimental effects on the mental health of construction workers.

The episode emphasizes the need for awareness and kindness within the industry. It is mentioned that individuals who enter construction often come from diverse backgrounds and may have faced challenges in their lives. Creating a culture of kindness and understanding can support the mental health of these individuals and help combat the stigma surrounding mental health in the construction industry.

Overall, the episode underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health in the construction industry. It calls for a shift in the industry's culture to promote open discussions, awareness, and kindness.

The speakers emphasize the significance of kindness and understanding starting from within oneself before extending it to others. They suggest that individuals must first find kindness within themselves to be kind and understanding towards others. The speaker challenges the industry to introspect and cultivate self-compassion, as they believe it is difficult to show kindness to others without finding it for oneself. By setting an example and understanding the reasons behind others' actions, individuals can create a more positive and compassionate work environment.

The episode also discusses the importance of becoming mental health certified in the construction industry, comparing it to being First Aid and CPR certified. It highlights the need for individuals to possess the skills and knowledge to address mental health issues just as they would physical health emergencies. Manny mentions his company's green sticker program, where individuals can receive mental health certification training. This program involves wearing a sticker on their hard hat, like displaying First Aid and CPR certifications. The purpose of this certification is not to make individuals certified counselors but to equip them with the tools and resources to have conversations about mental health and direct people to appropriate support.

Overall, the episode underscores the significance of finding the value that each member of the team can add to the project. Construction jobs are not built without the men and women who labor to make them happen. It’s time to show them some respect. The episode ends with each person issuing a challenge to the construction industry!

In this episode, Brian Winningham shares a poem that he wrote about life in the construction industry titled Temporary Fence Panels.

In the poem, Brian captures perfectly what it’s like to work on a construction project site. Before you know it, the day is gone, and you haven’t even started your own personal work. Staying until late in the night, and then you realize a problem on the job site that you must solve before you can go home!

The OG Lean Builder, Buddy Brumley, shares his own experience of working in the construction industry for a long time without succumbing to heart attacks, alcoholism, substance abuse, or divorce. This is seen as an anomaly, with the other speakers referring to him as a "unicorn." Buddy's story highlights the importance of self-care in a high-stress industry like construction, where many individuals may struggle with mental health issues and unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Buddy discusses the challenges of finding time for self-care, particularly when work consumes a significant amount of time and energy. He admits to not having any hobbies and using his time off to recharge for the next week. However, he recognizes the need to hold himself accountable and make time for self-care, even if it means learning new ways of managing his schedule. The speakers also acknowledge the role of support from others in encouraging and reminding individuals to prioritize self-care.

Overall, the episode emphasizes the significance of self-care in reducing stress levels and improving overall well-being. It highlights the challenges faced in prioritizing self-care in a demanding industry like construction, but also emphasizes the benefits that can be gained from making self-care a priority.

Welcome to the podcast where we talk to leaders who are making a difference in their field. Today, we're joined by Adrian Scott, a construction executive who is passionate about breaking down barriers and increasing diversity in the industry.

Adrian talks about his background growing up in inner-city public schools and how many black kids, including himself, dream of becoming pro athletes or entertainers. He shares a story from a kid he mentored who pointed out that even though teachers encourage them to consider other careers, the truth is that becoming a pro athlete or entertainer feels more achievable because they see people who look like them at the top of those industries.

Adrian explains that lack of representation is one of the reasons why many black kids aren't interested in pursuing careers in construction, despite it being a viable and rewarding option. He shares his own journey of breaking into the industry and how he's using his position as an executive to create more opportunities for underrepresented groups.

Adrian emphasizes the importance of having diverse perspectives and experiences in the workplace and how it can lead to better decision-making and innovation. He encourages listeners to challenge their assumptions and biases and to actively seek out opportunities to learn from and work with people from different backgrounds.

Thanks for listening to this episode of the podcast. We hope you enjoyed hearing from Adrian Scott and learning about his mission to break down barriers in construction. Join us next time as we talk to another leader who is making a difference in their field.

Through a demonstration, Jason helps the Lean Builder nation understand the power of visualization while folding a piece of paper into a cup. You’re going to want to see this episode, not just listen!

Jason and Hoots start by defining exactly what a perfect schedule means. The following is the definition that was developed as a result of the conversation. A perfect schedule is…

  • a schedule that the team can see and make perfect together.
  • has a perfect sequence of trade partners.
  • is focused on the flow unit.
  • a schedule that has a complete understanding of systems thinking.
  • a schedule that merges a lean culture in a lean system.

Jason and the LeanTakt team is offering anyone who listens to this podcast $100 off any service from Elevate Construction by using the discount code “Adam”. Go check them out, you will not be wasting time!

In this episode, Hoots gets to know Professor of Practice at Clemson University, Mr. Alastair Boulding. Al is an HVAC Master Tradesperson who has worked his way up from HVAC helper, through apprenticeship school, to being a journeyman, into a lead position and now teaching the next generation of builders at a prestigious University!

Al has a love for learning to the point where it has become a hobby for him. Learning has opened several doors throughout the course of his career! Al opens up about who he is and how he restores himself so that he can continue to serve other people.

Al talks about his lean knowledge as being a lean OG. He was going this lean thing before lean was even a thing! Al speaks of collaboration and coordination on a project site. He helps us understand how he builds relationships on project sites but simply asking people what their names are! He believes that every person out there should invest at a minimum of $200-$1,000 on their personal training or development.

Al talks a little bit more about his fancy boots on campus and the classes that he is teaching; however, he doesn’t let us know much about his dissertation! That is something that we are going to have to follow as the work becomes public. Al is a true hero that represents the skilled trades in his day to day life and has made a huge difference while educating people all over the United States. His passion and dedication to serving the trades is second to none!

Don’t tell Al, I’m afraid of my own success or “don’t get that certification, because they won’t give you the job” – he’s heard these in the past and is living proof that those statements are simply not true. Al gets vulnerable as he describes to Lean Builder nation what is “F” it filter means!! Here Al talk about the non-profit organizations that he gets involved with, splitting his time between Women’s Confidence Builders and The Skilled Trades Alliance. Al is just a down to earth, good man, making an impact every day!

In this episode, Hoots helps the Lean Builder nation better understand the Art of Questioning. Professor Hoots got a little upset with his students this week due to their inability to ask meaningful questions and decided to dedicate an episode to discuss why questions are important and how to ask questions!

Through the art of questioning, we can better understand the people and world around us in a much more detailed manner. When we can focus on asking open ended and inquisitive questions, people think. When people think, people learn!

Most of the time, questions are asked about things that are already known. This can also be known as “water skiing”. When people ask questions to discover the unknown together, they experience stress, anxiety, but most important they grow. That is the space that we should be seeking for continuous improvement!

Catch this episode now if you’re looking to improve your question game today!

In this episode, Hoots shows off his relationship with Rob VanCott, who happens to be one of the first clients that Hoots on the Ground coached back in 2021! Rob started as a maintenance worker while attending classes at the University of Hartford. He fell in love with the skills that all his peers were developing and decided to chase that dream. For the record, Rob wore his #NoBullshido shirt out of respect for the show. This shirt was given to him scaffold skilled trade professionals. Hoots is going to need one of those Rob!

Rob leads by example as he makes the person in front of him the most important person on the earth at that time. A super curious man, he’s always been enthralled with being a builder. He has a natural curiosity that is fed daily being in the field. He remembers a saying that owners will forget minor cost overruns and schedule delays, but they’ll never forget about a project because of poor quality.

As a Giants fan, Rob was excited as his football team had advanced, unfortunately at the timing of the release of this podcast, the Giants have been retired for the season! As Rob says, you cannot control everything around you, and it’s taken him a while to learn that. A couple of quick liners, “A little bit of fear is a good thing!” “I was a part of that building!”

Making sure he is a good father is what makes him tick! “Get up every day and put your best foot forward”, and “That’s why you call it the present, it’s a gift!”. Hoots dives into two of his favorite sayings, Felipe noted earlier in the week that FAIL is an acronym for First Attempt in Learning and Jesse’s Control is an illusion! Rob is a big fan of 5S and has been able to use this concept on all his projects.

In this episode, Hoots reviews another way to develop capabilities! Through radical candor feedback, teams can deliver feedback that is honest, kind, clear, and concise. Radical Candor feedback comes from a place of caring personally about a human being and challenging that human being directly. In this episode, Hoots reviews one of his favorite books called Radical Candor: How to be a kick ass boss by Kim Scott. Hoots raves about this book and her blog!

Feedback can be both hard to give and hard to receive. From birth, we have been told ‘if we don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all.’ This is total Bullshido and needs to be rethought. If we don’t have something nice to say, ask yourself if it is constructive and if you care personally about the person that you are referring to, if both answers are yes then share the feedback! The other comment we’ve been taught our entire life is to ‘be professional.’ Somehow, that means leaving your feelings at home and don’t care about people. This also couldn’t be further from the truth.

Hoots suggests analyzing your relationships to help yourself understand where you are from a feedback standpoint for those who mean the most to you. We have to change our views on feedback to make sure that feedback is actionable. That is good feedback that helps us to learn and adjust moving forward! That is being lean! That is what being a lean builder is all about!

In this episode, Hoots interviews Mr. Ray Terry who is 71 years young, going on 40, and super passionate about putting tools in schools. Through Ray’s organization Put Tools in Schools, he has been to 10 high schools and spoke with over 5,000 students this year. That is 33% of the high schools in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Area.

Ray is not afraid to step on toes and spread his beliefs and message. As a radio host for Fox Sports Charlotte, Ray is a natural on the microphone and knows how to push the limits! Completely worth a listen as Ray explains the issues that society has in encouraging young people to go to college and not better understand the trades.

Ray gives his blueprint on how he is putting tools in schools and introducing young people to their happy (their IKIGAI!)!! Ray expresses lots of discontent with his journey in visiting the school systems throughout the Charlotte area of North Carolina. Ray is truly making a difference in the construction labor workforce shortage by spreading the word and getting in front of young people to introduce them to their purpose for being on this earth.

Happy will give you what you want. Find your happy! If you need help, call Ray! His phone number is on his website: https://www.aboutyourhouseradio.com/

Tune into this first episode of the second season! Hoots highlights one of his lean heroes, Niklas Modig! The author of This is Lean who coached Hoots when he was with DPR Construction. Niklas helped Hoots understand the story of the Toyota dealership that won the award of Role Model of the Year. This company went from being one of the worst performing dealerships (#287) to the best performing company as judged by Toyota. Niklas had the opportunity to interview the young CEO of the company that made the four year profound change. The CEO informed Niklas that this was a 4-step process and he proceeded to outline the process on the dry-erase board.

Step1 = Everyone gets the same training.

Step2 = Everyone begins to see the work through the same lens.

Step 3 = Everyone begins to suggest improvements for the work

Step 4 = Everyone begins to implement the suggested improvements

This process pushes form but then allows the information to be pulled from those who are closest to the work. This is a great example of how to push form and pull content. Whether you are doing team health assessments, trust circles, player cards or other ways of pushing form, always ensure you’re pulling the content! We do this by asking open ended and inquisitive questions to flip the switch between being a teacher and a learner.

We must allow for variation to happen. By pulling content from the front lines, we are able to discuss and improve the things that actually matter. Maybe we will challenge Niklas Modig to come on to the show and share some efficiency paradox learnings with us!

In this episode, Hoots discovers and introduces the lean builder nation to Justin Uyar, of Shelco Contractors out of Charlotte, NC. Justin is a newlywed, and super proud of his new wife who is a vet technician! Somehow Justin ended up going to Clemson yet is a Carolina Gamecock fan. If you’re from the southeast, this is a big sin!

Justin started on the route to becoming a civil engineer. After spending a few years on the office side of construction, he made the shift to a Superintendent and hasn’t ever looked back. In fact, one of his old bosses is still waiting for Justin to come back from the field! Justin has been a part of a build with the largest building in Charlotte, the Bank of America building! This building is visible when watching the Carolina Panthers.

Hoots admires Justin for this thinking ability and his question game. Justin dives into exactly how his experience has helped him to well round his questions. You can tell through this interview that Justin thinks different and is bringing a new mentality to the construction industry. He is making a difference on his projects and challenges you to do the same on yours!

Justin talks about his second project in the industry when he was asked to do the impossible and split two offices into 4 offices. With a cool and calm manner, Justin and the team made this happen while exceeding the expectations of his client! All around, Justin is a stand-up person who is spreading love and team building throughout the construction industry.

Justin ends with his message to the world of “Don’t let the message get lost in the way you deliver it!” He sums it up by saying don’t serve me a perfectly good steak on an old dirty trash can lid, because he is not going to eat it!!

Matt Olshefski shares his 26th wedding anniversary with Adam Hoots on this episode of The Lean Builder’s Hoots on the Ground with No Bullshido! He dives into the story of meeting his wonderful bride in the parking lot! Matt mentions trust as being important to maintain a relationship for 26 years!

Matt started his lean journey as a laborer on a construction site and has progressed to his current role as a Superintendent with O&G Industries and even discusses his future role as a lean champion! He dives into a story from his journey into curiosity which helped him graduate to the next level. Listening to the workers, having patience, and be curious all helped Matt to discover how to be a Superintendent.

Speaking even louder and closer to Hoots’ heart, Matt is a living kidney donor! It doesn’t take much to see if you qualify to donate a kidney to someone (like Hoots!) in need! Matt jokes that after that process you’re cleared to become an astronaut! Matt talks about how that led to donating and volunteering with the local fire department after a major hurricane event! Recipient of Firefighter of the Year for his efforts, he is just a good dude that gives repeatedly!

Matt compares his duties as a firefighter to his duties as a Superintendent. He discusses how to analyze a situation before running in and firing of solutions. All about training, muscle memory and making sure you’re safe then others. Safety being the upmost in each of the professions.

Huge shoutouts to Ryan Popp, lean consultant with ASKM Associates as Matt discusses his resistance to lean when he first started. Not wanting to do simulations and “additional work”, he turned away the daily huddle and the boards on the wall. Finally, Ryan was able to convert him into the amazing lean builder that he is today! Matt is able to talk about “That Magic Moment, when it all clicked and the team came together!” An episode worth tuning in for!

In this episode, Hoots meets Carey George and discuss his approach to running work and how he’s always had a lean mindset when building projects. As a superintendent with over 45 years of construction experience, Carey offers a lot of wise knowledge in this episode! Carey highlights Keith Patterson from Waco Construction who taught him how to be a great Superintendent.

The conversation ranges from stop starting to start finishing all the way to meeting Carey’s current project team. Carey goes into detail about BE&K’s lean journey and talks about the way he visualizes the schedule, utilizing a stoplight scheduling approach to managing production. There are even photos in this episode to show you the boards he uses on his project site.

This episode is all about people. Carey is a true people person that knows how to motivate and inspire folks to get things done. You hear that in Ms. Jennifers voice as she talks about her three male heroes in her life and you guessed it!! Mr. Carey George is one of those three people!

Do yourself a favor and don’t ever tell Carey George that you emailed someone when you could call them or you might just hear “Let me tell you something” which is your cue to get out of there! Carey also touches base on multi-tasking as a myth and we learn together that on average it takes 23 minutes to recover from context switching!

All of this and more as we introduce Carey George to the lean construction world…

In this episode, Hoots discusses one of his favorite topics: Capability development! How many times on project sites have you heard, I don’t care how you get it done, just get it done! This completely misses out on the point of innovation and improving on what we are doing.

With too much emphasis on productivity and not enough on capability development, the construction industry doesn’t take advantage of compound knowledge!

In this episode you’ll learn more about what the word capability means and how important it is to align on exactly what the meaning is. We also uncover what are the different levels or layers of capability development which starts with the focus on the individual, then proceeds to a team level, followed by the organization and industry levels.

We will also learn about the different stages of mastery too!

Finally, Hoots on the Ground teases some ways to develop capabilities which will be discussed in future episodes. Those include:

  • Pause & Reflect
  • Comfort Zone
  • The Art of Questioning
  • Radical Candor Feedback
  • Push Form, Pull Content
  • Culture – Yes Jen Lacy, Culture!

You want to listen to this episode to better understand how to extract knowledge from the workforce to drive innovation on your project! You will learn that being intentional about developing capabilities will allow you to develop more capabilities and ultimately be more productive!!

Challenge question: What is your capability? And how do you develop it?

In this episode, Harry brings up a book titled the 5,000 Year Leap which is about how framers built the constitution as the United States was developed. Hoots compares this to the CDC’s socio-ecological model on how to prevent disease spread. Both of these concepts are compared to how the construction industry develops individual, team, organizational, and industry capabilities!

Patrick Lencioni’s

Always start internal! Mother Theresa said, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family!”

Some great one liners to consider in this episode!!

It is human nature to want to matter.

The culture is defined as the worst behavior that a leader is willing to accept.

What’s right over who’s right!

You teach what you accept!

In this episode, Hoots and Key review one of the many principles in Jason Schroeder’s book Elevating Construction Superintendents. This principle is on personal organization and time management. Time management is an oxymoron. You cannot manage time; you can only manage yourself within the time that has been allotted. Time will go on with or without you!

You have to plan your week in order to maximize production! You cannot come into the office on Monday morning and start reading through email first thing! In addition, you must have a good note taking process! There are too many commitments made in meetings for one to remember.

Keyan references a book called ‘Eat That Frog!” This comes from the Mark Twain saying that says ‘If you eat a frog first thing every morning, that is likely the worst thing that’ll happen to you all day!

Are your people aware of what is urgent and important or are they prioritizing their tasks based on the seniority of the person giving them the task? Have you started time blocking and/or time boxing?! If not, you must read Jason’s book on how to make sure you’re blocking out the right things and then timing yourself as you’re completing these tasks.

In this episode, Hoots on The Ground grills Felipe Engineer-Manriquez on Scrum. Felipe does an excellent job helping The Lean Builder Nation understand what Scrum is and how to apply. Felipe dives into his recently released book titled Construction Scrum, and we give that a quick review. We discuss a few of the stories at the beginning of the book and then discuss the Scrum Guide by JJ Southerland.

Only about half the time is spent discussing Felipe’s favorite subject of Scrum. The other half we get to know Felipe on a deeper level. He has recently changed careers and is now working with Boldt, one of the original Lean Construction companies. He tells us all about the onboarding process and discussed the luxuries and challenges of merging his Lean Construction experience with what they’re already doing at Boldt.

Felipe dives into exactly why he considers himself a Lean Builder and how you can get a hold of him for Scrum Training or anything else that you may need when it comes to making things easier, better, and faster for construction! He also drops a couple of exclusives on what his favorite outdoor activity is AND what he is currently learning. Tune in to better understand who Felipe Engineer-Manriquez is!!

‘Respect for People’ has become a cliché within the construction industry. Everyone is talking about it but few people are actually practicing true respect for people. In this episode, Hoots flirts with the idea of the term Respect for Resources with Respect for People being one of the many categories of Respect necessary for a productive project site. Hoots runs through each of these categories with real life job site examples. Those categories are as follows:

  • Respect for People
    • Engaging with all trade workers we walk by
    • Ask open ended, inquisitive questions
    • Listen with the intent to understand
  • Respect for Materials
    • Don’t damage other’s materials
    • Don’t install work that prohibits or makes others work more complex
    • Only bring what you need to the project site
  • Respect for Logistics
    • Proper dumpster / temp toilet locations
    • Construction Entrance taken care of to avoid mud on public roadways
    • Fence taken care of – fabric tight, erosion control well maintained, etc.
    • Traffic flow on project site
  • Respect for Equipment
    • Lifts clear of debris
    • Lifts charged
    • Ladders properly stored
  • Respect for Tools
    • Trade workers are often known for taking well care of their tools
    • Hand tools and drills in their respective places at the end of day
    • Extension cords rolled up and/or off floor

When you have respect for all of the above items, then we will have a total respect for people. Hoots goes through and helps the listener make connections on how respecting materials, equipment, tools, and logistics ultimately drives respect for people!

Hoots offers a challenge to the industry to start thinking deeper than simply respect for people. We must start respecting ALL resources that are being made available to us, starting with people! Teaching the capability to utilize the art of questioning, while discovering how to use open ended inquisitive questions to get front line workers thinking! This is what lean builders do!

This is a new segment that we are coming to you with via the inspiration from Harry Schmidt with O’shea Builders! R&D (Rip & Deploy). Join us on the first episode as Keyan breaks down the communication styles between generations and how this can affect how we delegate tasks or activities. He describes how each generation communicates the best. He also breaks down what the 5 levels of delegation are as described in the book CEO Tools.

Keyan uses one of Hoots on the Ground’s favorite phrases, “What got you here, won’t get you there!” Another Buddyism nugget of knowledge is brought to the table by Keyan when he says, “It only takes one Oh Crap! To wipe out 10 attaboys!”

These should be talked about and as tasks are assigned on a project site, the statement should be made that this is a level 2 delegation. Keyan provides some fantastic real-life examples as he delegates certain tasks on a construction site to Hoots! With each increase in level, we are empowering our people to think more often! The 5 levels of delegation are as follows:

Level 1: Do as I say! This means do exactly as I have asked you to do.

Level 2: Research and Report. This means gather some insight and report to me what you discover before we make a decision.

Level 3: Research and Recommend. This tells us to take the lead on doing the research, think about the answer, and recommend a solution. Provide pros and cons of the decision.

Level 4: Decide and Inform. This level of delegation means that you are taking the lead on all of levels above and apply the solution then inform me as the leader.

Level 5: Act Independently. Take the lead and make the decision. Do not report back, I fully trust you are implementing the best decision possible.

It is important as a leader, that we review the balance of our types of delegation that we do most often. Why is it that we constantly use level 1 delegations? Do we trust our people’s capability? Tune in as we discuss all of this and more!!

During this recording there were several other future R&D opportunities identified:

John Gottman – How many attaboys are taken away by one oh crap?!

Leadership and Self Deception – How to look internal before looking external!

Turning the Ship Around – David Marquette – Riding the brake, not the gas!

In this episode, we get to meet a great Holt Construction project team working at the DFW Airport. Sarah tells us about how she started early on working with her grandfather out of Louisiana. We learn more about Armando’s story coming through construction from a laborer to a General Superintendent.

Armando asks Hoots a great question on what the deal is with the bullshido of the word culture!? Hoots responds with exactly why that word bothers him and why the word is Bullshido! Surprise, Hoots loves the word culture as it’s truly understood and valuing from EVERYONE’S perspective.

Armando and Sarah have a great working relationship and they love to build each other up and pat one another on the back! Listen in as Hoots on the Ground interrogates what bugs each of them about one another! Hoots calls out the Bullshido lovefest and tries to get to the root of what putting teams like this together looks like.

Armando touches on the three types of waste and leader standard work as he shouts out Jake Harrell for visiting his project site and offering an outsider’s lean opinion on his operation. Jake taught Armando about the three types of waste and how they apply even inside of the office as the staff shares responsibilities:

  • Muri – Overburdened
  • Mura – Unevenness
  • Muda – Waste. Uselessness

They introduce us to Brian the Superintendent of the Iron working trade, which is the home screen on Armando’s phone. Watch the YouTube version to see the photo of Brian being angry with a job cleaning shutdown! The photo is classic!

These two have a great working relationship and they’ve been able to unite their team by building trust with the project team inside AND outside the gate. The relationship investment is real and they’re able to dive into the details and understand people at a deeper level.

Hear Davie dive right in with no introduction needed as he talks about his growing up in Scotland and how he was a polished turd when it comes to skilled trade wood working and/or metal work! Experience with building a cassette tape rack and bottle opener key ring! A great story about his interview going into the trades and witnessing what others were doing at the same time! A humbling experience.

The basics of lean are three simple things for Davie Thomson:

  1. Strategic Alignment – Know what you’re going to do, how it’s going to be cascaded and involve the people in the process.
  2. Appropriate tools – Only bring the tools that the project needs. There is no need to force tools just to claim doing lean.
  3. People Engagement, give people the training, empowerment, and permission to use the tools to deliver strategic goals. It’s ok to fail early and often! Failure is learning.

There is only ONE WASTE according to Davie – That is a waste of time. If you are operating in any of the muda (8 wastes) drives to the same waste of time.

Davie tells us exactly where the term No Bullshido comes from. Quick hint, it’s all of the western misinterpretation of martial arts and/or Japanese concepts. Even lean can be classified as bullshido to a point because people have classified it as a bunch of tools. Sound familiar construction world?

Discover where the term lean comes from, a couple of MIT grads who decided to coin the term in 1988. Davie discusses his stance on lean six sigma and the belt structures that are out there. They really mean nothing other than the ability to perform but it is the experience that ultimately counts and qualifies you for performance!

Learn how Hoots on the Ground crossed swords with Davie early on LinkedIn as they went back and forth on an improvement video. After Hoots thought that Davie was trolling him, Hoots requested a video meeting to better understand where Davie was coming from. Turns out after a half a dozen calls or more, Davie has taught Hoots a lot about true lean from Davie’s own experience.

Davie has a great way of talking about lean as being more than tools. Once again, another lean practitioner (from a different industry) explaining how important the people are with regards to successful lean implementation! He also discusses the difference between the types of work that lean considers:

  • Value added
  • Non-Value added but unavoidable
  • Non-Value added and avoidable

This is a concept that Hoots on the Ground took from a book titled Lean Thinking by Daniel Womack and others.

In this episode, we discover and celebrate who Buddy Brumley really is!

Buddy is the ideal lean builder who has witnessed various ways of delivering work and has settled on a lean mindset and approach to the construction industry. Hear Buddy talk about the transition of the industry over the course of his career. As an employee for Skiles Group, Buddy is one of the Original Lean Builders and a true inspiration to the industry!

Buddy delivers this podcast from his jobsite office, as the mud was drying on the walls! There is a little bit of jobsite noise at Hoots’ request! Buddy offered to do the podcast in his truck, but Hoots insisted on the real job site noise. There is something about those noises that complete this podcast.

Buddy teaches the Lean Builder nation his philosophy on tracking what work has been installed vs. what work has not been installed and when to flip to a rolling completion list.

Hear about the Old school Buddy and how and why his wife coined the term Crap ‘n’ Oh Crap cards! This was his tracking mechanism before utilizing the visual roadblock management tool! Now utilizing lean builder tools for most of the things he’s doing, his projects are succeeding, and the work has become easier on him and those around him.

In this middle of the healing gardens at Prisma Memorial Hospital, Sean tells us about his career coming up as a member of the 10,000 hour millwork club! As one of the best millworker on the west side of the Mississippi – Hoots was able to introduce Sean to one of the best millworkers on the east side of the Mississippi, Mark Riddle! Maybe Mark would be willing to come on and represent his side of this shape building contest!?

Sean opens up (Hoots didn’t edit it all out!) about his new granddaughter, Indigo in New Mexico! He shows off a photo of her that he just received while looking up his favorite Will Rogers quote, “Everyone is ignorant, only on different subjects.”

Sean talks about how we came up through the commercial construction industry, from being a builder to becoming an owner’s representative! The conversation centers around respect for people and/or respect for resources. Humans only have so much to give of themselves and as leaders in the industry we need to understand and respect the capacity these resources are able to give.

Sean helps the Lean Builder Nation understand what the definition of an expendable resource is. The conversation dives deep into relationships and Sean looks back on the time that his company forced someone to miss a birth. Sean broad brushes the concepts of Systems Thinking, which brought us together!

“Make something better in someone’s else life today!” – Sean Graystone!

Hoots on the Ground dives into why respect for resources is the key that will unlock all things respect for people. When I value the things around the person, the person will understand how much they truly matter to the system. When we focus on the respecting the resources, the resources will in turn respect the person. People will notice this fast.

Sean closes out the conversation by explaining how the darks spots in the loom are just as important as the light spots.

In this episode, Host Adam Hoots interviews Dan Reynolds, Executive Vice President with Gilbane Building Company. Dan shares a bit about growing up in the Midwest in Iowa. Although he’s worked all over the world, the Midwest is still near and dear to him, and he brings those roots to his work daily.

Dan starts the podcast by sharing a saying from his father about the value of “quiet competence.” You don't need to be the person jumping up on the table. Be the person that's going to offer ideas, be present, and be able to contribute. He feels that he’s driven to operate that way, and it’s what has ensured his success in the construction industry and in life.

He’s passionate and fired up about the people aspects of our industry and how we’re embracing care, collaboration, communication, and culture so much more today. He shares his appreciation for the project teams that worked tirelessly during the pandemic. Those teams that kept us in business and put their lives on the line then and every day.

He’s committed to spend the rest of his career focused on the people side. He wants to make sure our future leaders are absolutely the best and top-notch people they can be, and they are able to in turn help their teams and next generation to also become the best they can be.

It's about people, trust, behavior. The skill set needed to be successful has changed. We need leaders that can communicate, adapt, and encourage to solve problems and build better. We need leaders that respect and care; that lead by example; that are constant and consistent; that continually question what can be done differently.

Dan discusses how the industry is shifting its approach to promotions and employee growth. Smart firms are still looking at technical abilities, of course, but more they are ALSO looking at behavioral abilities. Historically, you could be a total jerk on the job, but as long as you were skilled technically, you could get promoted. That behavior doesn’t fly today.

About 20 years ago, Dan took a course on situational behavior impact and how to better share the impact someone’s behavior has on an individual. It’s an approach he has practiced and encouraged ever since. Making an example for feedback personal and having those tough conversations is what we need to keep driving our industry.

Dan says you must allow yourself to be vulnerable with people as well. Vulnerability builds trust. You must give and accept feedback. You must be okay to stay behind the curtain and let others shine. You must work to give back to your team, company, and industry.

He closes with the reminder that construction will always be people, so let’s make our people the best we can.

In this episode, Jordan Christensen tells us more about who he is and how he got to where he is now! Hold on as he discusses his amazing family life and how he found and developed his takt planning skills! Watch Jordan’s face light up as he talks about Ryker, Camden and Brielle as he tells the story of ‘growing up’ with Takt planning. Jordan explains how his takt journey has gone from crawling to running in this episode. He gives special shoutouts to the teams that helped him to perfect his takt experience. Jordan and Hoots compare takt planning to swaddling children. Lots of learning going on in this episode! Way more than just focused on construction. Brace yourself as you learn some great parenting tricks and ways to snuggle your babies tight!

In this episode, Hoots on the Ground introduces the Lean Builder nation to the 4 production laws and relates them to gravity on earth. Those four laws include:

  • Little’s Law
    • Work in Small Batches
    • Limit your WIP (Work In Progress)
    • Finish as you go!
  • Kingman’s Formula
    • Duration = Actual duration * Effect of Variation * Effect of Resource utilization
  • Law of Bottlenecks
    • There will always be a slower part of the process than the remainder and we must work to set the pace of production to match the pace of the bottleneck.
    • Once you clear one bottleneck, there will ALWAYS be another one.
  • Law of Variation
    • The long we allow variation to be in our process, the further from plan we become and more variation enters the equation.

There will be specific individual podcasts dedicated to each of these topics as the platform develops. This will allow the team to dive into the physics of production and how we are able to work together!

In this episode, Jordan tells us how the idea came about for intakt and where the program is heading. He also dives in to better explain exactly what takt planning is and how to drive it on your projects! Takt planning is becoming a huge part of the construction industry and will impact our people’s lives in a positive manner for decades to come!

Hoots talks about how important rest is to our soul and reads some feedback from a listener! Last week consisted of helping a mega project team pick up on the principles of takt planning and takt construction! The team came up with some really creative ways to implement takt construction together as one.

Hoots on the Ground also was able to experience his first The Lean Builder workshop and offers this podcast as the hook to get folks fired up and excited to experience theirs! The workshop covered the following items:

  • The value proposition for lean construction
  • Trust
  • Daily Huddles
  • Visual Communication
  • Managing Constraints/Roadblocks
  • 8 Wastes and Variation

In this episode, Hoots reviews The Lean Builder Blog on Building Trust In the Workplace – 3 Dos and Don’ts. In addition, Hoots on the Ground gives additional ways on how to build, create, and maintain trust. This is the first step in curating a successful lean project. Hoots also reviews the first trust episode (S1E8) and elaborates on ways to make it happen.

Here are some ways on how to build trust in the field:

No one takes blame, no one takes credit!

We don’t conceal information.

We communicate open and often!

We focus on people!

We request and implement feedback!

We call people by their name!

We show people respect!

Hoots tells the story about the Love Lab where John Gottman and Robert Levenson were able to predict, with a 90% accuracy, whether or not couples would remain together after only a few hours of meeting them! They discovered that it takes 5 goods to outweigh 1 bad!

Remember – Trust is difficult to gain, easy to break and tough to repair!

Building trust! That’s just what lean builders do!

When we implement daily huddles we are able to explain the why and impacts from one trade to another. Group accountability helps to drive project accountability and making things happen. James and Hunter dive into some of their secrets on executing the plan.

A wise Silver Fox once said, “Control is an illusion, we can only influence at best!” – Jesse Hernandez. How much do you actually control things? Are choices or calls happening when you come around that change people’s behavior?

Tune into this episode for new school old school advice moving forward for the Lean Builder generation! That’s what lean builders do!

James Gable drives home the 4 type of problems and gives his advice to the next generation of lean builders! Hoots references Art Smalley’s work on the 4 Types of Problems.

Hunter challenges the older generation to teach and learn! Adapt! Don’t get set in your ways, always be open to change or new ways of doing things. Don’t forget to teach what you’ve learned over your time in the industry. Those are the fundamental skills. Teach and be taught!

In this episode, Hoots on The Ground talks about trust and the book 5 Dysfunctions of a Team, where trust is the foundation of all things for a team. Once a solid basis of trust is established, then we can begin to have healthy conflict. With healthy conflict will come commitments that we will all be able to hold one another accountable for results!

Patrick Lencioni also discusses the two types of trust:

Predictive Trust: The ability to do what you say and the fact that you have known one another for so long, you know the other person’s next move.

Vulnerability Based Trust: The ability to be open, honest, and transparent based on who you are as a human being.

Will your team show up for you when you need them both in the physical and emotional form? This episode will really help you to stop and understand how to pick up on people’s words and actions.

If you’re not intentional about culture, then you’re being intentional about your culture. Come learn about the VTCA cycle – vulnerability, trust, conditions, and affirmations are the cycle that it takes to establish a positive culture and/or world. This is how we make humanity great!

Hoots briefly touches on the book called Leadership and Self Deception by the Arbinger Institute. This book helps people understand that most of their problems are internal and can be solved with the right perspective and changes to one’s own actions.

Come hear the story of the Emperor with no clothes. It’s provided as context for creating environments for people to speak up!

Hoots finally lays the challenge to Felipe to get him on The Lean Builder podcast after being called out! Hoots wants to spread the love to make things Easier, Better, Faster for Construction teams because that is just what lean builders do!

In this episode, Shannon and Hoots discuss what it is like getting into a male populated industry to the point of Shannon even changing her name on her resume. Shannon dives into exactly what her purpose on earth is and helps drive an understanding of the term man in Construction. At the end of the day, we are all human. Hoots drops another Japanese word, Ikigai – Japanese concept that refers to giving a person a sense of purpose, a reason for living!

Hear the story of the Chinese Farmer and how perspective on the matter is never fully understood due to the complexities of understanding the full system.

Shannon helps the Lean Builder nation understand what Lady Voltz is all about! Reach out to her if you’re interested in stickers!

Hear Shannon pick at the root of why Hoots has a displeasure for the word culture! …and just maybe Lady Voltz herself is converting to at least a deeper understanding of the word itself! Shannon and Hoots get outside their comfort zones on this episode and describe what it is like to move through the comfort zone diagram.

Shannon teaches us how to say “Happy Birthday!” in Canadian after Hoots had to be that guy and ask that question! She further discusses her next project where she is writing a book that plays on limericks and rhymes to help introduce skilled trade career opportunities to children younger than is current practice. Reaching beyond middle/high school and into elementary and pre school aged children is paramount at changing the image!

Tune in where Ms. Shannon even shares with us her spin on ‘I’m a Little Teapot!’ and spells a deeper reason for why she chose that specific rhyme! The learning was real and the time shared was fun!

In this episode, Hoots reviews the blog done by Keyan Zandy about the Firefighter Arsonist. Why does our industry reward early morning, late nights, and weekends? This stops today! We must no longer celebrate this bad behavior! In the blog, Keyan suggests the following items as a way to improve the construction industry: • Reward good planning

• Stop celebrating long hours

• Establish processes and training

Time is the only resource that we cannot get more of! If you want to better understand the difference between busy and productive, this is the podcast for you! Hoots discusses The Lean Builder’s version of the ‘Eisenhower Matrix’ in a graphic that explains the differences between firefighting, planning, delegating, and eliminating. He challenges each Lean Builder to track their tasks for a day and categorize each into one of these four quadrants.

'Eisenhower Matrix' here for your reference.

In this episode, host Adam Hoots chats with Jason Schroeder, owner, trainer, author, and podcast host for Elevate Construction. They discuss Lean’s value, vulnerability, productivity, mindset, and more. As Jason says: On we go…. Some quick show points:

  • Watch Jason go #FULLGRANDMA mode on CPM Schedule!
  • Hoots’ wedding song is discussed randomly by Jason!
  • Jason breaks down his definition of what Lean is.
  • How does Jason drive productivity? How does he get so much done?
  • Derek Kirkland with DPR gets a shout out as Jason discussed his approach to work/life blend and balance.
  • Would you rather be weak and growing, or strong and stagnant?

The duo chat about Lean’s value and concur that: That’s just what Lean Builders do. It’s about humility, being professional, no drama, driving jobs. It’s delivering high performing buildings in the most efficient way possible with respect for people. The Lean Builder community is about redefining what the word Lean means. It’s centered around people and who we are first. We will elevate ourselves and bring up everyone else with us, and we will learn from the people around us and elevate us and them. In sharing his background, Jason notes he could be called a “snowflake” – sensitive and fragile and unique. Being vulnerable creates trust and connection and it’s different for the construction industry and for this former superintendent. He focuses each day to stay centered on his core values to help the people, the workers, and the families in the industry. He’s an only child who loves people and by design has 11 children – his treasures – with his wife and business partner, Katie.

Adam and Jason discuss why Jason gives away so much information for free – from resource guides and templates to podcasts and other content. It’s a philosophical decision that information should be free. It’s about caring for people and helping them get the results they want to achieve. Getting content out creates a ripple effect that can drive change in our industry.

Now, the application of that information may cost some money (i.e., hiring his team in to help implement and consult). Jason notes though that he focuses more on getting the work done than the money. It’s the same with his clients as no client has come in saying, “I want to make more money.” They want a better environment for their people and to change the industry. The output leads to better processes, efficiency, productivity, profit, etc.

For Jason Lean is about blessing people and families in the industry. Now, his definition of bullshido – any kind of Lean or operational excellence strategy that doesn’t center around people.

Jason is fanatical about personal organization and laser focused. He shares some life hacks on how he does it all. He also acknowledges that because he’s mission focused, that he also works his butt off as just a natural part of his lifestyle. And he’s a natural at finding ways to leverage his time and create synergies. If he’s writing a book, he’ll focus podcast episodes on chapter topics and transcribe to jump start the writing.

Adam gets him to share some pearls of wisdom for those just entering the industry as well. It’s about progress and trying and learning. It’s not a promise that everything will always be easy or rosy, but we have the power to rise to the occasion and life a remarkable life. Our mindset is a huge factor for our success.

Jason’s motto is “on we go” --- even if we slow down, we are going forward. There is always tomorrow to try again and improve. Our work is dedicated to the future.

We invite you to take a listen and learn – because that’s just what Lean builders do.

In this episode, host Adam Hoots visits the jobsite with John Burleson, a superintendent with Robins and Morton in South Carolina. John has been in the construction business for 14 years. His Lean journey started about seven years ago with a failed experience as he didn’t have the team involvement and support needed. After that first foray, every Lean journey since has met the goals.

He shares that you need the culture and collaboration with the trade partners and architects to reach the potential of Lean. You must care about the people and project and align behind the same goals. The jobs with the best culture have the best success.

Adam and John discuss how they LEARN with LEAN; some of John’s tips for implementing Lean on the jobsite; and words that irritate them.

“Building Forward” is the motto driving the jobs John completes with Robins and Morton. The company has been on the Lean journey since 2010 and works to implement Lean on all its projects and with the understanding that each project must make Lean its own.

They begin by getting everyone in the same room to determine what success and how to create that center of collaboration. This foundation is key to build the culture that drives innovation and encourages involvement. Can we be better tomorrow than we were today?

Before sitting down for the podcast, Adam and John walked the jobsite and snapped some visual pictures to better show the visual nature of Lean. The job site has Conex and BIMBOX containers for collaboration. John wants everyone as close to the work as possible and with the proper technology to support their work. They ensure there is enough workspace and Internet connectivity to support the full team and trades.

To be mindful of meeting with COVID, the team adapted some storage containers with rolling garage doors to enable more open sharing to spread out and still have visibility. It’s dubbed “The Lean Machine.”

Just as having a place to meet, John shares that setting the right time for daily huddles also matters. He polls the team to see what timing works best for everyone. This lays the foundation for early involvement and support. They discuss the concepts of the parking lot, the ELMO doll, facilitators, stop watches and more.

Once of the takeaway points both echo is that Lean is not about all or nothing. It’s important to take baby steps and pick a few Lean items and get them sustained and working well, then add some more. You first need to build consistency and trust. It’s a series of small steps – or as Adam calls it, a “small j curve” approach.

John notes that when he started the perception was the Super knows all and has all the answers. He readily admits, that is not the case and that we must be humble to say if we don’t know the answer AND that we will find out though. It’s about being a team player that matters and not a hero or silo mentality if we want to succeed with Lean.

The duo round out the conversation with the pet peeve phrases on the jobsite. For John, it’s “I can’t.” He notes that most often they can if they want to but it takes want and willpower. Adam shares that the word “try” and phrase “the problem is” also are trigger words.

They concur that it’s all a mindset. That you must create the culture and collaborate and embrace Lean because you WANT to do it and for the right reasons, versus being told to do it.

We invite you to take a listen. And, if you’re in the South Carolina area, the guys invite you to come visit their new LCI Community of Interest forming there.

In this episode, host Adam Hoots takes listeners on a trail walk – yep, he’s walking in the woods and chatting with you – as he shares the idea, approach, and goals for The Lean Builder’s new podcast, “Hoots on the Ground.”

This podcast is all about respecting the workers, respecting the people, and keeping it real. We’re here to learn and engage together. The focus is on delivering a practical message that let’s us all go to our job sites and improve for our team, trade partners, and clients. It’s time to bring it and be better when we open the job gates tomorrow and every day after.

Adam shares how often people have misused or misconstrued the “L” word (aka Lean). He notes that really, we need to just add in the letter “r” to turn it to Learn as that’s all we are doing. Lean is learning how to do things better, faster, and stronger for both buildings AND people.

Our industry has a problem. We’re losing trade workers every day. It’s a combination of lack of respect for the skilled trades and potentially a lack of self-respect to push for better work/life balance. Our industry needs to focus on how to develop others; how to really connect with others; how to transfer the knowledge of our skilled trade workers, how to give and receive feedback on our jobs.

As much as building is about plumbing and steel, it’s equally about the people, the trades, the colleagues doing the work. Adam shares a saying they had at an employer: “it’s boots up before we boot up.” Meaning that we’ve got to walk the field (see the people doing the work) before we turn on our computer.

At the start of 2022, we have some 1 million open jobs in the construction industry and a $1 trillion infrastructure package coming down. It’s time to make changes and return the pride to our careers, field, and work. It’s time to make things happen, as we’ve all got work to do and don’t have time for bullshido.

Adam’s goal with the podcast is find great builders and mine their minds, if you will, to find out how they create processes, self-organize, drive innovation, and bring everyone together. It’s a time to dig into what inspires them and how they motivate others, build trust, hold folks accountable, and deliver results.

It’s not always easy. As Adam says, when you feel uncomfortable, you learn and grow. And, just as important, sometimes you’ve just got to take a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate.

And, just as we need feedback on our job sites, Adam wants your feedback on this podcast. We’re asking you to shoot straight and be real. Listen in and let us know what you think.

We invite you to join Adam on this trail walk episode.

This week we debut The Lean Builder’s official podcast, “Hoots on the Ground,” with our host Adam Hoots.

In this episode, The Lean Builder creators Keyan Zandy & Joe Donarumo introduce the podcast series, goals, format, and host Adam Hoots.

While there are several great podcasts in our industry out there already, Hoots on the Ground is unique as it’s focused on the builders on the job site. It’s looking at how we can all own our impact, learn and think, and move the industry forward. It’s about creating feedback loops, dashboards, and field-verified approaches. It’s “no bullshido” – as Adam likes to say and shamelessly borrows that phrase from Davie Thomson.

A free-flowing conversational podcast, we’re bringing in guests who are evangelists, practitioners, and even skeptics of Lean Construction. Yep, we’re even planning on interviewing people who don’t believe in the “L” word or had a bad experience.

Our trio shares some war stories about their past work with 70-day-straight projects, crazy deadlines, and firefighting. Then, we shift the stories to how we can change that dynamic, promote more work-life balance, and make construction faster, easier, and better for all the people involved.

This episode takes a dive into Adam’s background, so our listeners can get to know him and why he was selected to champion our first podcast series. You’ll quickly see his personality and knowledge jump out; we could think of no better brand ambassador and podcast host to lead us into this effort.

Adam’s been around the construction industry since birth – literally; his dad was a senior superintendent. And for the past 20 years, Adam has worked for construction management firms as an operations leader and project manager. He currently serves as the Lean Shepherd for ConstructionACHESolutions in Greenville, South Carolina.

Come with an open mind and growth mindset. Be ready to learn and think, to be uncomfortable and encouraged, and to drive yourself and your teams forward.

We invite to listen in weekly and be part of the movement.
