Max's Island: Recent Episodes

Meet Max Power

We’re told to always be in the present moment … we’re told to set goals and achieve them … we’re told that life’s short and to live every moment as if it where our last. Arrrgh, what does all this mean?? As one great lyricist wrote … “No-ones an island and sometimes it’s good to pretend” When was a time in your life you let yourself be ‘you’ and gave yourself the time to pretend? “Max’s Island” the podcast, exists so you can tell others WHY!

This episode features a classic example of a person who totally adopted the Max’s Island way … and made a deliberate decision to change everything.

As we say on Max’s Island, that moment in life where you made a decision … for yourself.

However, in this case … for a range of reasons, it didn’t end there. In fact, it eventually ended back to where it all began.

Darren Green made a decision in 2018, after 15 years of running his own successful mortgage broking business … and within a week of him sharing that decision to walk away, with his bosses … it was abruptly over.

Waking up on the next Monday morning, he was a free man … or so he thought.

Since then and until now, he has wrestled with what was best for his mental health, what are his passions and thinking about what he does best.

But nothing really stuck or satisfied him. This meant that Darren bounced around a few jobs, sat out his time during COVID and generally tried to find what was right for him.

Eventually he circled back to where it all began … being a self employed mortgage broker … but with a different frame of mind and a refreshing outlook of where work sits in his life. He feels that he now has achieved the freedom to self actualise and make the necessary judgement calls that allow him to live his life … on his terms.

Danny Allen and his mates used getting together, over a few beers, as a way of keeping close and yakking over things that mattered to them.

A chance meeting with a podcast producer and content creator … at a pub in the Perth northern suburbs … just as they were thinking about starting a podcast for themselves, was the moment of truth for them.

They mused over a Podcast name … loosely formulated a plan … and then just relied on the connection they had between themselves … to create 4Beerzin.

The natural evolution of this creative endeavour has been strong, consistent and pushes the edges of topics their listeners enjoy.

They have even had “an experience” with Mel C (of the Spice Girls fame) that adds to this story.

Danny’s infectious enthusiasm provides a spark of creativity and uniqueness that brings the podcast to life. And personally for him, this experience has allowed him to see the value of making decisions, taking informed risks and just being open to the opportunities the podcast … and life in general … directs his way.

Enjoy this engaging story, with all its humour, whilst still understanding the strong meaningfulness of the messages it holds.

The many faces of Brad Cecins…Sports star, media personality, school teacher and community radio entrepreneur.

This is Part 1 … of a two part series … of Brad’s visit to The Island.

Whilst sharing his primary journey of starting a community radio station, Brad unearths a story that has a multi-faceted message of commitment, perseverance and self belief. Without this focused drive, the ability to connect with others and be supported along the way by his family, he would not have achieved the amazing outcomes that have occurred.

His engaging personality genuinely reflects the Max’s Island value of “daring to be human - being unique”.

Brad has a relaxed storytelling style that is easy to listen to. You’ll feel like you’re in the room with him.

Enjoy.

Simon Carabetta openly describes himself as a typical arrogant, egotistical 20 year old, back in the early 2000’s. He joined me on Max’s Island to speak about these times and his early introduction into the local ‘pro-wrestling” scene in WA.

After a chance meeting with a group of guys of a similar age, he was drawn into being involved in an emerging organisation at the heart of this ‘pro-wrestling’ scene. His strong ego put him front and centre of this group and he immediately took on the roles of ‘marketing/PR guru’ and ‘event night referee’.

He was now in the scene and ready to ride the wave of growth with this enthusiastic band of wrestling brothers. And, then following an event mishap to one of the groups wrestlers, that attracted significant media attention, he was thrust into the public limelight as the spokesman for the group.

The TV and press coverage that occurred, not only gave the organisation a level of notoriety, but it was another catalyst to ‘stoking’ his already significant ego. This all contributed to him getting a gig to referee in front of 15,000 people one night.

The night was huge … but didn’t end well for Simon. Whether it was his ego, his pride or just his “20’s something” naivety, his actions lead to a massive fall from grace. Not only from the crowd on the night, but also from his colleagues in the pro-wrestling scene.

This experience has been hugely influential in shaping Simon’s approach to his own self-awareness and how “Trusting the Truth” of knowing who you really are, is important when maintaining relationships in both his personal and professional life.

It’s a great lesson for all of us … to understand when it’s time to change … when it’s time to grow … and when it’s time to be a better person.

Simon’s entertaining storytelling makes this a compelling listen.

We all aim to set ourselves “Everest Events” … those personal quests that when completed, provide internal fulfilment and a sense of achievement. The impact we create for ourselves can be huge … or, it just may be the start of a series of smaller achievements that build momentum and meaning in our lives.

But, they don’t need to be as grand as scaling the world’s largest mountain or crossing the largest oceans.

Lois Keay-Smith used the motivation of completing the Cape to Cape trek in the South West of WA, and then striking it from her ‘bucket list’ … all at a time where health had become very important for her and living life to the fullest … became a priority.

The completion of this trek was the inspiration to challenge herself with other personal goals … one of which was to rekindle her interest in performing ballet … something she did as a younger person, but now had the opportunity to re-engage as an older adult.

Other quests exist for Lois on her bucket list, and it is all about creating the “space” … so she can really give them a go.

On Max’s Island we love people who embrace our value to just “Call It” … and make decisions to follow their passions.

Just like Lois, you should too.

In her “day job”, Lois guides people though career changes and helping them get the best out of their working lives. You can contact Lois @ https://www.careerwisdom.com.au/

The final lines in the early 20th century poem, by Robert Frost … The Road Not Taken … says:-

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Paul Skewes admits that over his life he has regularly chosen the road less travelled and this has shaped him. From this, there have been experiences … some intuitively driven, some pragmatically driven and sometimes even driven by nothing other than a feeling for what is the right thing to do.

Paul now realises the significance of taking this journey and how important this approach is toward leading a life … in his words … of just “being me”.

So, Paul’s story, philosophy and life acquired wisdom, fully align with the Max’s Island value of “Daring to be human – unique”

Paul expertly describes how important this is for him personally … and how significant it is for the people he works with.

Jamie Larson has always been one to travel afar from his native New Zealand, challenge himself and find new ways to connect with people.

At one significant moment, with only a ‘basic’ high school level of Spanish, he made a decision to relocate from England and go to Argentina. With little expectation and not much of a plan, on arrival he set about using his instincts for meeting people as a way of fitting in and looking for work. He had immediate success … but then the pandemic hit, and Argentina was completely locked down … and his world of opportunity vanished overnight.

Once released from the clutches of Covid, he again set about finding his people. The impact was immediate and his life has been fulfilled by the connections made with an ever widening group of local’s and expats in a place where caring for others seems to be a priority … at least in Jamie’s case.

Shannon Ziegelaar has had some grass roots experiences in the various levels of local and federal politics. This included supporting a close friend in the City of Perth Lord Mayoral elections and then being a volunteer for Kate Chaney as she entered federal parliament at the last federal election as a successful independent community candidate.
The collective views and values of a group of like minded community focused citizens, who were also inspired to think there was a better way for effective representation, has led to the formation of Voices of Moore.

Shannon tells her story of being part of the establishment of this group and how it has evolved into a movement that has engaged many aspects of their community, created some common aspirations and is now positioned to find the “ideal” candidate to represent them.

Her story is uniquely personal but with a strong theme of “community” and how this has so many more benefits than just effective representation.

Voices of Moore can be found @ www.voicesofmoore.com.au/

And most importantly for this group, if you have an interest to be involved, or even an aspiration to consider being a candidate, then content them @ hello@voicesofmoore.com.au.

Davy Rowe was back at square one … his business was gone!

So what next … especially when the advice from his brother was … "You know, realistically mate ... you've got to forgive the guys that cheated you"

Was he really ready for that?

The first step toward accepting any change, occurred when he went with his brother to a “men’s retreat” for a weekend in the USA. The realisation of who he was, and what he wanted to be, was uncovered…along with an interest in “plant medicines” as a way to help his self discovery.

Next was a trip to Costa Rica, where Davy experienced the mind influencing and soul discovery effects of ayahuasca. It changed everything.

The enlightenment was immediate and from then his life direction changed. He is now focused on service of others and loves to work face to face coaching them to a better life.

He established the EQ Centre in Wangara and today continues to positively influence the life of many.

Part 1 :-

These words came from a voice in the mind of Davy Rowe one morning, as he was travelling down the freeway in Perth. It took him many years to share this experience with anyone … but it formed a catalytic moment for drive and purpose in his life from the moment he ‘heard’ them.

He had arrived in Perth from the UK in 1990 with a wife, two young kids, and a determination to build a business from scratch. The business was beginning to grow when he heard this message, and he was able to use it as motivation for success.

He went on to establish Vortech, a successful air-conditioning installation company — it was the biggest in Perth — and Davy was busy. Busy with work, busy with family, busy raising his kids.

Then his world collapsed when a trusted contractor refused to pay nearly $1 million in work Vortech had completed.

“At the time I felt so betrayed, I couldn’t believe that someone could have done that,” he says.

The betrayal forced the closure of the business, which pitched Davy into a low place.

Frank Scatchard has led an interesting and varied life.

During his visit to The Island, Frank shared with us some really interesting details from his original career as an industrial “kiln operator”. Yep, it’s not every day you meet someone that has operated an industrial kiln at dangerous temp’s of over 1000 degrees…and has lived to talk about it.

But whilst that was a significant part of his early working life, there was a drive for the freedom to work for himself. So, after some careful planning and creative working arrangements with employers, Frank was able to build up from scratch … his own lawn-mowing business.

This freedom of working for himself allowed him to embrace one of his passions … music … and become involved in community radio. After a couple of goes at it, Frank eventually did a course in radio announcing and then began a commitment to hosting a regular show on 6HFM … RockAria. A show that has aired regularly for over 10 years. Tune in every Saturday on 6HFM 107.3 @ 3-6PM. For the best listening experience, use the Community Radio Plus app to find the station and RockAria.

Frank’s other indulgence is BBQing … it could actually be regarded as a “dirty habit” … especially since he has over 10 BBQ’s in his backyard, just waiting to be fired up.

Yvette Thomas and her husband had well established, long term careers. But they were forced to make a considered decision, during the worldwide pandemic, to seek a new life … and future.

This involved a move to regional Western Australia to operate a tourist accomodation … a project that lasted for 2 years and 9 months. However the intensity of running a 24/7 operation created physical and mental burnout which led to the need for both of them to take a break. The only way to deal with this was to take 3 months for “complete rest and recovery”.

After this time of contemplation, Yvette began a process of discovery to determine …”what’s next?”

This involved a simple Google search of “trauma informed education” and opened her world to new opportunities. The first step was to complete an online course called “The Trauma Informed certificate for Coaches and Healers”

Now she is a trained “Root Cause Therapist” and “Trauma Informed Manifestation Coach”.

This has totally changed her life and she truely understands that when you “step into your courage” you will be rewarded … no matter what.

In Western Australia where Max’s Island is recorded, we are in the midst of another exciting Aussie Rules football season.

At the highest level of AFL, the local scene has featured the strong “on-field” improvement of the Fremantle Dockers and “Harley Hype” is gripping the West Coast Eagles fan base.

The local WA Football League also continues to generate incredible community support and be the important “feeder” system for the elite players.

But, it wasn’t that long ago when things were compromised by the pandemic and in WA, we experienced an isolation that actually allowed this local competition to continue and provide a real emotional outlet for many…at a time of collective community anxiety.

In today’s episode, we reflect on the two occasions Cameron Britt, CEO of the South Fremantle Football Club, visited the island to share his story about his journey in football, how he came to WA and the bizarre times of successfully running a football club during a pandemic.

This episode is divided into three distinct sections:-

Charlie Gunningham was a little uncertain about the long term future of his teaching career in the late 1990’s. But, like many changes in life, there was a sequence of events … some unplanned and generally not expected, that eventually catapulted his professional life from teaching to something totally different … the tech world of digital real estate.

This mixture of influential events included completing an MBA, connecting with an American “hedge fund” manager and entrepreneur who had found himself in Perth WA, investing in untried mapping technology … and even being on stage with his wife at a Dame Edna Everage show at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco WA.

And … all of this coming together just as the world wide tech bubble was about to burst.

But it worked out … with Charlie and his American business partner taking the plunge to establish a mapping based Real Estate tech platform and quickly evolving their business model so that it became not only sustainable … but making money.

This is a typical entrepreneurial story of a good idea, the connection of passionate people, fast and intuitive decision making … added with a spice of the quirky. If a Dame Edna experience isn’t quirky, then nothing is!

This allowed her to be involved in the monitoring and implementation of key programs to support those in our society.

However, this career was interrupted with her becoming a mother. As can often be the case after a significant life event, she reassessed her professional outlook during pregnancy, after child birth and through the wonder mothering a new born. Brooke changed her focus and has successfully studied to become a “midwife”

Through the combination of the emotions felt during this lived experience and the compassion for supporting other women, Brooke has now fully embraced a career as an independent registered midwife. Further, she is committed to understanding the importance of the individual circumstances faced by every woman during their pregnancy journey and what is important when supporting them during this time.

Last year we had visits to the island from two musicians who have uniquely different lived experiences that have dramatically influenced the way they make music today.

Laura has 4 children who have never been to school … that is … in the formal sense of learning. But this does not mean they haven’t experienced an education process that has prepared them for life and their future endeavours.

Initially through specific circumstances and then from a deliberate desire and a belief in her eyes to give her children the best opportunities to learn, Laura has chosen to home school them all. She in fact does not call it home schooling, but refers to them as a ‘home educating family”, with the ‘holy grail’ of achievement is her children being able to read.

Laura and the children have also managed a number of neuro diverse conditions that have added to the complexity of their journey.

Getting the most out of experiential learning situations and the ongoing quest to source unique, real life opportunities where this can occur, has been a huge part of the education process for all 4 children.

Now that the eldest of her children is preparing for adult life and future learning, Laura is clear in her belief they are prepared … even for university. She says … “it’s really easy getting into university … without going to school … that’s the truth”.

After suffering from a work related head trauma, Mark Ewing developed an acquired brain injury that needed to be managed as he attempted to return to work. But this was challenging when colleagues kept saying “you look fine to me” … and his manager even said “if you don’t recover, you will be dismissed”.

It took the astute recognition from his GP, of his real condition, for things to change … finally someone who took interest in his post traumatic growth recovery. And then, a considered referral to a psychologist who knew what was possibly happening to his brain, unlocked the inspiration for taking positive action.

The link to art, as a way for Mark to demonstrate his emotional position and feelings, provided the inspiration to follow a path toward recovery. Initially, this art reflected how Mark associated these emotions exclusively through colours and positioning them together.

He also likes to have metaphors and stories in his work. These are self reflective, self driven and totally for himself.

Mark is now in a gallery and an art studio, but most importantly he is influencing others with ABI’s by volunteering in an art program at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Another great step toward his recovery and personal growth.

Cynthia Bartolomei and her husband decided it was really important for their family to experience a journey around Australia together. So taking their two boys out of school, with the blessing of the headmaster, they chose to follow the sun and head north from Perth WA in April 2021. This was just when WA was being locked down due to the pandemic … and whilst getting into WA was not possible, actually leaving Perth and eventually the state, was not a problem.

They soon discovered the two boys were actually learning so much from their experiences on teh road and most importantly, learning from things that interested them … and not just what was in a formal curriculum.

An early highlight occurred in the Kimberley region, in the far north of WA. On meeting an indigenous elder, they were invited to travel on some rugged tracks to this man’s traditional lands, at a bay on the coast. They were invited to stay the night with his family and had the unique experience of listening to “Dreamtime stories” and be totally immersed in the real history of the place.

This was just one of the amazing places they went to and the full trip delivered unique, unexpected and confronting experiences.

This trip lasted just under a year and has created the desire to do it again … so Cynthia and her family are now planning to leave Perth by the end of this year to do it again and visit places they missed the first time around.

You can follow the new adventures of Cynthia and her family.

In her own words, Jay Wood got a “bop on the head” in a motor vehicle accident. But this was really serious … and resulted in a major “invisible injury” … a catastrophic traumatic brain injury.

The symptoms are so unique and specific to Jay it often makes it difficult for her to acknowledge how her behaviours are perceived by others. Nonetheless, she honestly believes she didn’t lose her essence following the accident … as she says …”her heart didn’t get damaged”. She still believes LOVE is the most important thing in the world and tries to live her life this way.

The impact of the accident, which happened in her early twenties, robbed her of many youthful experiences and doing the things she wanted to do. So, re-learning the forgotten skills of her life … those lost in the brain injury … was important. Especially re-capturing the magic of her music that now inspires her ongoing passions. It took two years for Jay to re-learn to play the guitar and understanding the essence of her old songs … how the lyrics and music went together …was her greatest challenge.

Unable to fully capture this previous essence, has allowed her to re-create the ‘awe” of her music in a whole new way… by writing the songs again … now influenced by her new “life experience”.

Now following the path of reality she is on … Jay’s driving force is to try and show others who may feel stuck, that they can overcome anything.

Her music is a big part along this pathway for her life.

Paul Hansen is a confident, well educated and strong professional, who has built a successful career for herself in organisational development and leadership. This has been both as a senior manager in major mining companies and as an independent consultant in the sector.

So it came as a shock, when once a ‘new’ manager of her team adopted an adversarial approach that featured a high level of personal bullying and unsupportive team behavour. The explicit negative actions and the implied undermining of individuals in the team … including Paul … saw a number of them leave within a 3 month period. Paul was the second to leave the team, and this was at a time that coincided with the start of the infamous GFC in October 2008.

So, she was not only challenged by the personal impact of the bullying, but had to deal with starting a consulting business in financially risky times.

Using her lived experiences from this event and also acknowledging the need to personally accept and cope with the emotional fall-out, Paul was able to successfully craft an ongoing career until her recent retirement.

As a 24 year old, Ryan Miller took the opportunity to follow his dream of becoming a TV broadcaster and journalist at Sky News in Sydney.

He immediately hit the ground running and was soon thrust into a management role looking after a news team. As a traditional journalist, he was passionate about reporting the truth but it didn’t take long before editorial direction began to occur from above. This coincided with the ‘on air’ arrival of polarising people like Andrew Bolt and Peta Credlin…things now began to change. When these on air presenters began espousing the conservative views of the network’s “owner” and these views were morally different to Ryan’s, he knew it was time to move.

The dilemma of leaving a position after only 10 months, the potential career consequences of this and the requirement to pay back some relocation costs, made for a difficult time. But a chance referral from a mate to a role in football at the Greater Western Sydney Giants, a sport that had been a large part of his life in WA, was the ideal way to relieve this tension.

Immediately things changed and over the next 4 and a half years, Ryan was able to immerse himself in a personal passion but also was part of something “bigger” in the world of AFL.

It was a successful period for the Giants during this time and especially in the growth of woman’s football … the fastest growing woman’s sport in Western Sydney at the time…and Ryan was at the centre of it.

Now back in WA, Ryan is creating content for a international tech startup, Optimize Mind Performance. Their App supports athletes, both professionals and amateurs, to optimize their mental skills training for better performance. Check it out at optimizemindperformance.com

This episode is titled, “For a short time” – and we reflect on two stories from 2022 where a person entered the lives of each of our guests for just a short period yet made a momentous impact.

Firstly, there’s Simon White, someone who has been a successful journo in newspapers and online … for many years … all around Australia.

He spent some of this journey in South Australia, working as the racing writer for the Adelaide Advertiser, and it was during his time there he got to meet … and become friends with, a particularly colourful horse racing identity.

Following a suggestion from an editor at the paper and since it was the 25th anniversary of the “Fine Cotton” affair … the infamous horse substitution ring-in, at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Queensland, Simon started to look for one of the key characters in this ‘affair’, Hayden Haitana. The trainer of Fine Cotton was now living in and around the fringes of Adelaide, and leading quite a mysterious life.

This story is one of genuine connection and friendship that ends with Simon being able to do for Hayden, something that no-one else was able to in the previous 25 years … And that was to get him legally back onto a race course.

Then there’s Dean Margetts, who at 21 years of age, responded to an advertisement in the local paper … to become an umpire.

This began a speedy journey to the AFL, where he eventually umpired 377 games (and that’s after 110 league games in the WAFL), across a career spanning more than 20 seasons. He featured in 12 finals (2 Prelim’s) and is an AFL Life Member.

During his time umpiring, whilst still based in the west, he travelled well over 200 times to the east coast of Australia to umpire games. This weekly traverse across the country was just in a day’s work for a self defined footy-head who saw umpiring as ‘his sport’.

It was on one of these trips back from the east when a dramatic mid air incident occurred. If it wasn’t for a chance meeting with someone on board, his life could have changed forever. A decision made by a doctor on board that flight … someone who was in his life for just a short moment in time … probably saved his life.

Dean Margetts played footy from the ‘under 7’s” until he was 21 years old. He then retired.

After trying his hand at coaching an under 13’s team, and with two mates taking them to a grand final, he responded to an add in the local paper … to become an umpire.

This began a speedy journey to the AFL, where he eventually umpired 376 games (after 110 league games in the WAFL), across a career spanning more than 20 seasons. He featured in 12 finals (2 Prelim’s) and is an AFL Life Member.

During his time umpiring, whilst still based in the west, he travelled well over 200 times to the east coast to umpire games.

Defend our NDIS

The NDIS provides necessary supports to more than half a million Australians with disability. It is something we are all proud of.

Investing in a strong NDIS also has flow-on benefit to all Australians – in fact for every dollar spent on the NDIS, the scheme delivers $2.25 back into Australian communities.

Despite all of these benefits for people with disability, the broader community and the economy, we are seeing over and over again that people are having their NDIS plans slashed – leaving them without the essential supports they need.

This episode revisits Natalia Hodgins story and her life with a severe health condition and the resulting disability. Her story gives incredible insight into the challenges faced by a person with disability and how schemes like the NDIS should be so important for their future.

Sadly, Natalia struggles to have her disability recognised and is currently not supported with an NDIS plan. This must change.

This is not the NDIS we fought for, and it is not the NDIS Australians deserve.

“I’ve learnt that maybe you don’t put a gypsy on an Island.”

Tracy Wilson

On Max’s Island we have our first guest (and most likely the only one ever) who actually has a house on an island. Tracy Wilson is a skilled mental health practitioner who has made a positive difference to the lives of many people with mental health challenges and is a fully inclusive workshop facilitator.

In this episode you’ll understand what makes her a restless soul who does not take authority too well, how she uses a glass wine from neighbours to feel at home on her island and how she is fulfilling her dream of being a fiction writer.

Enjoy your visit to another island.

We’re often told to be in the present moment … we’re told to set goals and achieve them … we’re told that life’s short and to live every moment as if it where our last.

But what does all this mean??

On Max’s Island podcast we have the answer to this … you’ll hear the unique stories from a range of special people … those who really did something for themselves … something that made them free, liberated, feel special … or just be, what they wanted to be.

The soundtrack to Max’s Island is a song by singer/songwriter Steve Standing … it’s called “Island” and is off his latest album Little Rebellion. The chorus says it all … so listen to the entire song at the at the end of each podcast.

“No-ones an island, but sometimes it’s good to pretend,

Go for a hike, your burden’s just on your back,

Walk on a beach, imagine you’re sailing away,

Yeah no-one’s an island but sometimes,

sometimes it’s good to pretend.”

Steve Standing – from the song “Island”, off the album Little Rebellion 2018.

And a big thanks to Bec … who’s voice you heard in the intro. She is very talented and you can catch her regularly on the airways at RTRFM.
