Dr. Katherine Foss is a Professor of Media Studies at the School of Journalism and Strategic Media at Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Foss teaches about health communication, television, and gender studies. Dr. Foss’ book, “Constructing the Outbreak: Epidemics in Media and Collective Memory,” analyzes seven epidemics from the past 200 years, and describes how shifts in both medicine and journalism influenced the outcomes of those pandemics. Now that so much has changed in the past two years, not only because of the arrival of COVID, but how much the disease itself has changed, I’m excited to hear what Dr. Foss has to teach us. So I hadn’t heard of the “zero waste” concept until recently. It’s getting more popular, with the rise of zero waste shops and markets, the backlash against plastic bags in supermarkets and the rise of so-called “zero waste products.” I thought it would be difficult to figure out what to buy and what to look for, but once I started looking, it’s actually pretty neat and not that hard to find out what you want to know. So I wanted to share some of the things I’ve learned with all of you. This episode builds on the things I talked about in E60, Let’s save planet Earth, shall we? Go back and listen to that one, after this one.

In honor of Black History Month, I’m excited to tell you about an extraordinary person. Who else in the same life could start as a slave in the 18th century, then commandeer a ship at the age of 23, to bring 17 passengers from slavery to freedom? Then, serve in the Civil War and be promoted to captain for their bravery and leadership? And they were not done- served in their state assembly, state Senate, then 5 terms in the US House of Representatives. This extraordinary, and not well-known Black historical figure, is former US Representative Robert Smalls.

This episode was pretty tough for me to get through; please stop listening if this episode is upsetting you. That is not what I mean to do, so I’m trying to balance between telling all of the truths that we know, while trying not to upset my listeners or cause them anguish. The reason I am trying to tell as many truths as possible, is because silence and cover-ups, as you will hear, is what caused Nassar to continue his behavior for so long in the first place. And although the title of this episode points to the FBI’s delays, they are not the only organization to blame, as we will find out in this episode.
We all know what Larry Nassar did in his 38-year career for USA Gymnastics, or USAG, while sexually abusing hundreds of young girls and women, one as young as 6 years old. USAG allegedly covered up Nassar’s behavior; we’ll hear about Steve Penny, the President of USAG at the time, and his alleged actions as he awaits trial.
The FBI delayed their investigation into Nassar, and we don’t have to say allegedly there, because there is a Department of Justice investigation and report to prove it. Nassar also worked for Michigan State University, where there is evidence of a cover-up for his actions there. MSU was forced to settle lawsuits and pay a fine to the US Department of Education for that institution’s involvement in the cover-up of Nassar’s crimes.
How did so many organizations (USA Gymnastics, US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, the FBI offices in both Indianapolis and Los Angeles, Michigan State University) get this wrong? Understanding that, is a big job. As tough as this episode was for me to research and talk about, let’s get started.

In the first episode on the Determine Our Future podcast on this subject, E33, we found that debt prisons never actually disappeared in the United States. We’ll review the origin story of debt prisons, and how different systems in the US today work the same way. Then, we’ll see if there have been any changes. We’ll also touch on the subject of private prisons, and how the Biden administration is trying to move away from the use of them, and how those private companies might have a little trouble letting go.

In December 2021, the US House and Senate finally reached a legislative agreement that will help military sexual assault victims, mostly women, to have their cases actually prosecuted instead of being denied for a variety of reasons. This legislation has been worked on by many House Reps and Senators for over 20 years. The biggest change is that military commanders of the women who have been assaulted are not the decision makers any more for whether these cases should be prosecuted at all. These current procedures are not working, obviously, because why would you want someone with absolutely no legal, investigative, policing or criminal justice background deciding if they should bring charges against one of their subordinates? This makes no sense; who set up the military system this way? Anyway… understanding why it’s been so hard to prosecute suspected rapists and sexual predators in the military, why the system stayed the same for so many years, and how we have failed the women in our country who have signed up to fight for it, only to have that system let them down? It’s a big job. Let’s get started.

DeVannon Hubert, my guest today, has had enough life experiences to fill several people’s lifetimes. DeVannon has faced discrimination of multiple types, been affected by addition and multiple personal health crises, has served in the military during Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell while being a member of the LGBTQ+ community, has been a drug dealer, has been in jail, and has been homeless. DeVannon is an incredible person, and has so much to teach us about strength, courage, perseverance and survival under the worst of circumstances. DeVannon is also a podcaster, and has written Sex, Drugs, and Jesus, a memoir about all of these experiences and where they have led.

I am captivated by what is happening with this story because I have been hoping and hoping that the students would eventually get their fraudulent loans forgiven and their tuition reimbursed. Although they won’t get that time back that they spent pursuing a degree that was not from an accredited university, I was hoping that they would at least get monetarily compensated. So did they? Stephanie Ryan, Ph.D. is a chemist, a parent, and a social media influencer who creates superior educational products and content. Dr. Stephanie is passionate about learning through play. Dr. Stephanie earned her Ph.D. in the Learning Sciences and her M.S. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Saint Mary’s College. So short intro today, dear listeners. I wanted to dig into white collar crime, and why there is so much less stigma for the crime itself and those who are prosecuted and convicted of these crimes. It’s also a mystery to me why these crimes are pursued with much less resources than other types of crimes. Also, perpetrators are punished with much less jail or prison time, if any, except in the most extreme cases, when there is a large public outcry. Learning more about white collar crime? What are the life lessons I want to teach my kids? In my first Life Lessons episode, E11, I talked about how I want to teach my children to be good human beings, and make a positive difference in the world. In Part 2, E18, my close friend Jennifer and I talked about what we want to teach our children with our similar yet different perspectives, through their childhood, teen years and into adulthood.

Dr. Kara Ayers, PhD, is the Associate Director and an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati, at the college’s Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. Kara is also the Director of the Center for Dignity in Healthcare for People with Disabilities, and a Co-Founder of the Disabled Parenting Project.
Dr. Ayers works to teach others about disability identity and culture, bioethics, community inclusion, and reducing stigma for those with disabilities. Kara has spoken at the White House, and has given many media interviews on these topics. Kara also serves on multiple task forces and national and state coalitions related to improving outcomes for people with disabilities.

Okay listeners, I get that this is pretty arrogant of me, to suggest that I have the answer to the entire policing system in the US, when so many experts are already working on this, and people are so divided politically as to whether there is a policing problem at all. But I have been thinking about this for a while, and listening to experts, and reading tons of materials on these issues. I’m also trying to come at this from a place of common sense, which I will explain later on in the episode.
I’m also trying to approach these issues from a perspective of trying to help society’s members before jail or prison comes into the picture, because I think it’s clear that just throwing a ton of people into prison isn’t helping anyone, law-abiding citizen or not. Prevention is a better solution than punishment. So, come on this fanciful ride with me, where we figure out a utopian system of policing in the US, which ironically, doesn’t involve as much policing as you might think is needed.

Amanda Gorman is the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. Amanda’s poem, “The Hill We Climb” and Amanda’s impassioned and powerful reading at President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2020 Inauguration, moved the country and inspired so many people to continue to push for positive change in racial equity and other social justice issues. I’m so excited to talk about Amanda Gorman and while talking about her past, to wonder about how much else Amanda could possibly accomplish.

On the 365 Diversity website, the training is described as getting outside of the organization’s comfort zone and challenging normalcy, power majorities, and decision makers. Today we will talk about these topics, as well as what police departments and health organizations have in common.
Kimya has a Ph.D. in Sociology from North Carolina State University has been faculty at multiple colleges and universities across the US. Kimya connects with schools, businesses, and organizations around the world and speaks extensively on these topics and others. Kimya and my pronouns are she/her/hers.

I hope that my podcast episodes have given my listeners as many proven facts as possible, and not my opinions without anything to back them up. But I will admit that my personal political leanings are pretty much Democrat, somewhat liberal. Sometimes I just can’t understand why some politicians say and believe the things that they do.
In this episode, I would like to highlight some members of the GOP (that means Good Ole Party) that are disagreeing with their establishment’s White supremacist views and the new radical direction the party has taken. In my opinion, the Republican Party has been hijacked by “he who shall not be named,” and most of the current, still loyal to him, members still don’t know what to do about it.

In the modern English language, there are more than a million total words. There are about 170,000 words in current use, and 20,000-30,000 words used by each individual person. When I think of those facts, this episode talking about maybe 10-20 words in the English language and whether we should be using them, is a little funny. But I still think it’s important to talk about these words because, despite what we said on the playground when we were little, words can hurt us. Words can hold groups back, insult people with every use, and send messages we may not even mean to send. So let’s talk about these words I’ve chosen to discuss, and examine what they really mean and how people think of them. Determining what words really mean? It can be a big job. Let’s get started.

Dr. Foss teaches about health communication, television, and gender studies. The book that Dr. Foss wrote, “Constructing the Outbreak: Epidemics in Media and Collective Memory,” analyzes seven epidemics from the past 200 years, and describes how shifts in both medicine and journalism influenced the outcomes of those pandemics. 35 episodes everyone! This is incredible. When I first started this podcast, I didn’t think very hard about how far I would go with it. There were so many variables- my young kids, my work schedule, time with my spouse, the pandemic. I just didn’t know if I could do it all, to be honest. But I found my flow, figured out how far ahead I need to be, and little hacks to make the work easier. I have learned so much- about doing something I love, about making a difference in this world, about doing something for the first time by… just doing it!
So when I look back at the past 34 episodes of Determine Our Future, I realize that there are some updates that I either feel I need to do, or want to do. I think one of the best things about podcasts is that you can update them when needed. So I guess I could have gone back and updated each of these three episodes and re-released them. But then I thought… what if I just combined the updates into one great episode, and then if you want to, you can go back and listen to the originals?
Here we go. In this episode I will provide updates to E9, E10 and E15. Episode 9 is about the militarization of police and why police officers and departments treat Black people and people of color differently from White people. Episode 10 is about for-profit colleges Globe University and the MN School of Business, that defrauded students with Criminal Justice degrees and other degrees that turned out to be worthless. Finally, Episode 15 is about cancel culture, and its evolving situations, consequences and even meanings in American society. I’m excited to provide updates to the movements of each topic. All right, dear listeners. Let’s talk health insurance. I think my regular subscribers will know that I like Obamacare, otherwise known as the Affordable Care Act. I especially like the additional 50 million people insured since the start of Obamacare in 2010. Recently President Joe Biden opened the enrollment to the ACA due to the pandemic and the resulting high unemployment during 2020 and the start of this year, leading to many people losing the medical insurance connected to their jobs. In this episode, we will take a closer look at the ACA than we did in Episodes 3 and 4, and see how it’s doing and what the future of the ACA might be with Biden at the helm.

Frederick Douglass was a pivotal figure in America’s history. An abolitionist, writer, orator, statesperson and more, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement and a brilliant speaker, despite having next to no formal education. He wrote several autobiographies detailing his time as a slave and after he escaped slavery. I chose my cover art, the Frederick Douglass stamp, because it was issued in February of 1967 in response to the Civil Rights movement. I’m glad that Douglass’ achievements and strength of character have been recognized, but I think he still has so much to teach us. Maybe looking back on his life can help us in our current social reckoning. Let’s jump in!

Voter suppression actually goes back to the founding of this country. In the first Presidential election in 1789, only 6% of the population- White wealthy landowners- were allowed to vote. Other methods, like poll taxes, literary tests and more have been enacted over our US history to prevent certain groups from being able to vote. Voter suppression continues even today; in the last 10 years, 25 states have passed laws that make it more difficult to vote.

William Darity Jr. is the Samuel DuBois Cook Distinguished Professor of Public Policy at Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy. Among his many specializations is Socioeconomic Inequality, Education & Racial Achievement Gap, and Reparations. Along with A. Kirsten Mullen, he wrote “From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century.” The book provides a roadmap for an effective reparations program for Black people descended from slaves in America. His work and findings are so relevant to the difficult conversations we’re having today, and he was quoted in a CNN article on the subject as recently as February 2021. I’m excited to learn from our conversation today.

Activist, diplomat and politician Andrew Young said it best, when he told CNN after George Floyd’s murder in June of 2020: “I think the Black Lives Matter movement is probably the first worldwide human rights movement that I've seen. I mean, everybody in the world saw George Floyd die. And there were people marching for Black Lives Matter in New Zealand, in Europe and Africa, some parts of Latin America. Because the authority of law enforcement is almost a problem everywhere.”
Does the world of US professional sports realize how much work there is to be done, to produce equity? Let’s find out.

Ida B. Wells was a journalist and Civil Rights activist, who inserted herself into some of the most dangerous situations a Black person could be in. She lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Jim Crow was still in full effect. Her work shed light on the lynchings, killings and other punishments wreaked on Black people by White people in the US, simply to intimidate all Black people. Ida’s search for the truth in these situations, and her work to spread this information to the public, make her an incredible person and one who shouldn’t be forgotten.

There have been 115 US Supreme Court Justices, over the country’s 230 years of existence. Five of them have been women. Okay, that doesn’t sound so great. But, since 1919 when women could practice law in the US, and since 1920 when the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in the US, out of the 47 Justices that have served, five of those have been women. That’s better, but at 11%, we can definitely do better than that. I’m excited to tell you about these amazing women, and how their lives and terms as a Supreme Court Justice affected the laws of the country we live in.

I’m especially excited to introduce Dr. Justin Goldston, PhD as my special guest on the podcast. Dr. Goldston is a Professor of Project and Supply Chain Management at Penn State University, and works closely with The Penn State Sustainability Institute to blend technology into organizational sustainability efforts. I did not realize the sheer size and scope of Penn State: total annual enrollment is over 97,500 graduate and undergraduate students in person and online, and offers more than 160 majors.
Justin has over 20 years of experience working with organizations around the world on business performance improvement, organizational change, and enterprise-wide digital transformation initiatives. Dr. Goldston is also a five-time TEDx speaker.

In this past year, 2020, we’ve all seen a lot of things. What scares me just as much as catching COVID or having my family suffer a loss from the disease, which is scary enough, is watching our country splinter and crack into two. Our country is divided, Democrat vs. Republican, mask wearing vs. not, COVID is real vs. COVID does not exist, Biden won vs. Trump won. I started to wonder why… aren’t we all getting the same information?
But the truth is, we’re not. Our news sources, the places we look at on the Internet, in newspapers, on podcasts, in magazines… we’re not looking in the same places to get our information. And that is leading to different truths, different conspiracies, different allegiances, different everything.

I’m excited to kick off only my second interview for my DOF podcast. I would like to introduce Jennifer, who is a personal friend and also an incredible professional, spouse and mother of 3. Jennifer is the Director of Enterprise Programs for a Fortune 500 company, with over 20 years of experience and an MBA to boot! Jennifer and I have talked a lot about our kids, and I’ve been able to benefit from her experiences because her kids are older than mine. Mary McLeod Bethune is an incredible historical figure; she was the child of former slaves, born just after the Civil War had ended. She became an educator, a Civil Rights activist and women’s rights activist, and an advisor to President FDR. She is known as “The First Lady of the Struggle” because of her early efforts to level the playing field for Black people and women. While I might not present a specific issue in this episode that asks for recommendations, I will still ask a question: what is the best way to honor Mary McLeod Bethune’s life? As we hear about her accomplishments and trials, let’s think about that.

Episode 15: Cancel culture- What does it mean?

What does cancel culture mean? According to multiple sources, it’s defined as either withdrawing support for, or actively speaking against, a public figure of some kind that has said or done something offensive. Or at least, it used to be just public figures. Now, it seemingly could affect anyone- like Amy Cooper, the dog-walker in Central Park in New York, who called the police on a Black man as a form of intimidation. Or, it could apply to Harvey Weinstein, whose allegations of sexual misconduct toward women are wide and span his career of 30 years, and include 80 alleged victims, some of whom are famous themselves. We’ll talk more about this and other examples of cancel culture in this episode. Basically, I’m afraid of where this type of action is going, and how it could get out of control pretty quickly.

In past episodes of DOF, I’ve touched on how to talk to kids about LGBTQ+ issues, and I think those strategies can help adults too. But I also think that more needs to be said and taught in companies and in public groups and organizations, about how to be an LGBTQ+ ally and support that community. It is not a choice for anyone to be anywhere along the identity spectrum. But it is a choice for those of us who identify as cisgender and heterosexual, to be an ally and to support the LGBTQ+ community. I am proud to have made that choice, and I also know that there is always more work I can do, to understand more and help more.
Becoming an LGBTQ+ ally? It’s a big, and important, job. Let’s get started.

I’ve heard a lot of people say this year of 2020, about the protests and the Black Lives Matter movement, that “Protests and violence are not the right way to effect change.” And it sounds like that makes sense, doesn’t it? There are legislative ways to make change, like introducing new bills to the US Congress or filing a lawsuit; there are grass-roots movements like petitions, it seems like there are so many ways to effect positive change. But then I thought: how have Americans created change in the past? How did the United States declare independence from Britain? Was that peaceful? How about the Civil War, to abolish slavery? Not very peaceful.
In this episode, I decided to dig into the history of the Boston Tea Party in particular, to try to find the difference between that event, which is praised as one of the defining moments in our country’s history, and what makes that different from the protests happening around the world in response to George Floyd’s murder in May of 2020. I have a feeling that there is not much difference at all, but only in our minds and in our old stereotypes, biases and prejudices.
Looking at our current protests for what they really are, necessary calls for social change? It’s a huge job. Let’s get started.

On May 31st and June 1st of 1921, the largest incident of racial violence occurred in the United States. It is most commonly called the Tulsa Race Massacre. 300 Black people were killed, 10,000 Black people were left homeless, and property damage amounted to more than $2M dollars. We don’t learn about this in schools, and we really should. By learning about it and realizing just how wrong it was, we can work together to try to prevent it from happening again. Let’s get started.

What are the life lessons I want to teach my kids? The sheer length of the list makes me want to give up before I begin. Fortunately, I have about 14 years to figure out how to talk to my kids about all of this, before my oldest daughter turns 18. Of course, her younger brother will get a better version of all of these talks. But I’m enjoying the opportunity to try to compile this list, and also how to approach each subject.

This episode summarizes the Globe University and MN School of Business and its tragic history. This company is owned by Terry Myhre. These two university brands had 20 campuses in three states.
Basically, the schools defrauded thousands of students, got sued a bunch of times by many different people, lost their federal student loan funding in 2017, and promptly filed for Bankruptcy, ensuring that their defrauded students wouldn’t get their money back. It’s a story about a company that decided to go after people who were trying to make a better life for themselves. Brace yourself; it’s a sad story. Let’s jump in.

When I was growing up, I had a family member who was a police Sergeant. I believed that the police were always there to help us, to “serve and protect.” I thought they were friendly and respectful, and I respected them in return. They looked for missing children, raced to the scenes of car accidents, and put their lives in danger, if needed, to protect their communities. And I do believe that almost all police officers, state troopers and deputy sheriffs join their respective forces with these goals in mind. So… what is happening now?
Why do police officers act differently toward Black people and people of color when performing their jobs? How did the police get “militarized?” What other changes have occurred to change policing as we thought we knew it? And, what is Qualified Immunity? I tried to find the answers to these questions.

I had to educate myself a lot in order to create episodes for this podcast. I really didn’t know a lot about racism, antiracism, and a lot of other things. I didn’t know about the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. I didn’t realize that systemic racism existed in every facet of American society- household income, home ownership, employment, entrepreneurship, health insurance, education and crime. I didn’t realize that the roads that could lead to success were wide open for me (other than me not being a White man, of course; but we’ll do gender discrimination in another episode). And I didn’t realize that the roads that feel open for me, are closed for so many others. So I did as deep a dive as I could, knowing that there is always more to learn and more work to be done. Today, I ask and try to answer: How can White people understand racism and antiracism? And my biggest study guide was “How to be an Antiracist,” by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi.
Understanding these concepts? Yup- it’s a huge job. Let’s get started.

This inaugural episode is about how the I-94 Interstate was built through the Twin Cities in the 1960’s, cutting right through the historic Rondo neighborhood, which prior to this construction was the largest Black community in St. Paul. You’ll hear about how this community never really recovered. And then, in the early 2000’s, the Light Rail Transit project almost did it again.
