Trauma is not only caused by things like car accidents and bad breakups. Jessica “Vibrant” Hammock teaches that trauma can be caused by anything where we had an expectation and what actually happened did not meet our expectations.

Therefore, anytime we have a money experience that doesn’t meet our expectations we may have a trauma response and store it in our bodies. This often appears as headaches, anxiety, depression, stress, and more.

In this episode, Jessica teaches us how to begin to rewire our thinking around money. She encourages us to give ourselves permission to recognize where we are, change our behaviors, and learn a new story. Join us!

After 20 years of work Sarah Leslie had a very high paying career doing something she was really good at… but it was killing her. The job was so intense that she was literally sleeping with her cell phone in the bed so she wouldn’t miss any work related calls. People were starting to comment that she was losing weight and turning pale.

One day during the final rest pose of a yoga class, lying there in the dark with about 50 other people, she started crying uncontrollably. That was totally out of character and it was enough to finally move her to action. When she got up from that mat she knew she had to make a change and resigned from her job the very next day.

Sarah is now an Identity Artist who helps highly motivated individuals become strategically liberated CEO over their whole lives, including the way they create money. In addition to sharing her story, in this episode Sarah reveals the underlying causes of why we get stuck in our money beliefs and how we can start to break free.

"Money is just paper. Money doesn't mean anything unless you and I agree it means something."

-Sarah Leslie

About Sarah Leslie

Sarah spent the first 20 years of her career working from the therapy chair and as the Director of Clinical services over a 150 bed residential facility.

After a dramatic shift in her own life, she pivoted to the virtual space allowing her the freedom to work from anywhere! Now, she helps highly motivated individuals become strategically liberated CEO over their whole lives, including the way they create money.

She stands out from others in her field as she is fiercely committed to her own personal growth so that she can continue to push past her own limits.

Many of us, especially women, are taught that in order to serve we must sacrifice something precious to us. Frequently, the sacrifice we make is our own well being. We sacrifice our income, our physical health, and our and mental health to be what we believe to be the most helpful and the most useful person possible.

For years Linda-Ann Stewart did exactly that. She volunteered regularly and helped out with every event until her health took a turn for the worst and she was forced to learn to say “no”. As she practiced saying no she made some key discoveries about being of service versus giving a gift. Most importantly that service doesn’t have to be for free and that it’s incredibly hard to give when your energy and finances are low.

In this episode Linda-Ann shares her story and we discuss how value, priorities, feeling indebted, and feelings of resentment all play into this theme. Linda-Ann does a wonderful job of teaching us where to draw the line, creative ways to say no with confidence and kindness, and how to serve without sacrifice.

"Service is different than a gift."

-Linda-Ann Stewart

About Linda-Ann Stewart

As a focus coach, hypnotherapist, speaker and writer, Linda-Ann Stewart works with women entrepreneurs and small business owners who have gotten stuck and distracted by shiny objects. She empowers them to focus, master their mindset and manage their priorities, so they manifest greater prosperity, well being and freedom. She opened her private hypnotherapy practice in 1990, a few years after moving to Sedona, Arizona.

A dozen years ago, she transitioned her business to coaching women to be more effective, efficient and productive. Over 300 of her articles on mindset, motivation, and empowerment have been published in magazines, newsletters and online. Not too long ago Jen Vellenga (Jen V) and Jennifer Rettele-Thomas (JRT) started a company dedicated to helping women speak with presence as a side hustle. Then after a few months, they decided to take a big risk. They chose to resign from their steady, stable, university jobs and make their side hustle their main gig.

In this episode, Jen V shares what it was like to take such a risk (yes, there was last minute panicking involved) and how they knew it would be worth it. She talks about her supportive husband and a few others who were much less supportive.

In this episode Mary shares how often we use generosity to mask our feelings of inadequacy. Fortunately, there is often ample evidence that we are enough. And ample evidence and that there is enough of what we need for all… if we are willing to pause and look for it.

Join us as Mary shares her journey of self discovery and growth as she went from educator to entrepreneur.

We’ve all had an unpleasant experience with a sales person who made us feel like we wanted to run away and join the witness protection program to get away from them. Somehow, when many of us start a business we suddenly become that sales person because we’ve never had training or been exposed to a better way. In this episode Follow-up Boss, Bethany George, talks about how to generate more sales and higher dollar sales through relationship building. Another was the fact that we need money to make an impact in the world. Robert came across many missionaries who believed they needed to give away all the money that came to them and that sacrifice was required to be righteous.

Robert realized the more money he had the more he could affect change in the world. In this episode he shares how he came to this conclusion and how he’s built a business based on teaching other entrepreneurs to do the same.

As Anna Roszak was listening to Episode 082 of MoneyHeart, Recovering from a Money Fight, she realized not enough people were speaking about emotional and financial abuse. In that episode my guest, Stephen Finney, recommended that rather than blame your partner for all the money problems, start by taking at least 1% ownership of the problem. Excellent advice. And he included one caveat which was… not if you’re in an abusive relationship.

Anna was so glad we brought that up because when she was in an abusive relationship she was blaming herself all the time. This realization sparked her to reach out to me and ask if we could record an episode about her experience in hopes that we may shed some light on this issue, help others to recognize their situation, and get help on the path to recovery.

In this episode, Anna shares her experience of emotional and financial abuse. It is different from many well known abuse cases because her husband never hit her. There was no physical abuse so for years she didn’t realize there was a problem. This is very common. She explains what happened, what the clues were, how she got help, and what you can do if you notice a friend who might be in a similar situation. I’m so grateful to Anna for being brave enough to share her story in support of the greater good.

“I didn’t know I was in an abusive relationship until I was out of it for years.”

Does the idea of paying for your kid’s college keep you up at night? Denise Thomas was terrified of her children being stuck with nearly lifelong crushing college debt so she got to work. After more than 7,000 hours of research she figured out how to help her kids win scholarships. Between the two of them they won over $199,000 in scholarships, each went to 4 years of college, and graduated debt-free with cash left over.

Denise emphasizes that her homeschooled teens weren’t geniuses or sports superstars. Her 6-step strategy is repeatable! In this episode she shares the story of how she and her family began this journey, the inside scoop on college applications and scholarships, and tips on how your kids can graduate from college debt-free, too.

"Back when I was in college, colleges were looking for what we now call the jack of all trades. You had to dabble in a little bit of everything. Many parents still believe that to be true. Yet another myth." -Denise Thomas

Almost at a loss for words when trying to say something about this episode. Episode 100!!! I can hardly believe all the amazing stories and learning that have come out of creating and producing the MoneyHeart podcast for the past couple of years. For this very special episode I’ve asked my friend, mentor, and former MoneyHeart guest, Peter Biadasz, to interview me. He got to make up all the questions and I had no idea what they would be going into the recording session.

"Peter: We'll start off with an easy question. What is the meaning of life?

Camille: 42"

If you got that joke your nerd game is at least as strong as mine and I’m impressed. If you didn’t get it and want to level up, you can read about that answer here: https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/42/. Peter and I have a great time on this show and it will probably remain one of my favorite episodes. I hope you enjoy it as well.

The positive feedback I get from listeners and the stories you tell me about how various episodes have impacted your lives is really what keeps me going. Thank you all so much and stay tuned for Season 3!

PS: For those keeping track and paying attention to details like I do without even trying… in the show I said Peter’s episode was 016. I was wrong. It was actually Episode 014, Making the Best Out of the Worst: https://serenityfinancial.us/2020/07/30/making-the-best-out-of-the-worst/.

Peter’s company is called Total Publishing and Media. You can get in touch with him through LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-biadasz-bb73102/ and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/peter.biadasz

Earlier in life Jo Ann made the mistake so many women make of relying on her husband to handle the family finances. That’s what her mother had done and she thought everything would be just fine. Unfortunately it wasn’t. It led her down a path of poor investments and eventually to bankruptcy. Now a seasoned bookkeeper Jo Ann teaches her clients just how important it is to have a knowledge of your finances even if you’re not the primary income earner.

“You need to have some emergency money.”

Jo Ann shares a wealth of knowledge in this episode including her top tips for women and top tips for business owners.

Tips for Women:

  1. Have someone work with you to set up a budget for planning and bill paying.

  2. Have savings ‘buckets’ for taxes, emergencies, fun, etc.

  3. Work with a financial planner to get solid advice on retirement preparation.

Tips for business owners:

  1. Keep biz and personal finances separate.

  2. It’s best to start with a bookkeeper from the beginning. Let a bookkeeper set up the accounting system and then maintain the books. Just because you know how to enter items in QB does not make you a bookkeeper.

  3. Collect W9 forms from service providers/indie contractors as you start to work with them and ideally before you pay them.

  4. Tell your bookkeeper everything related to money and assets owned.

5.Have the bookkeeper do the sales tax return. Set aside the sales tax collected for future payment.

  1. Venmo – share the transactions with the bookkeeper.

  2. Amazon – bookkeeper needs to know the categories of the purchases.

  3. Be prepared to be specific…can’t just call something a ‘biz expense.’

  4. Keep track of biz mileage. Note odometer reading on 12/31 or 1/1.

  5. Set up bank/credit card logins for the bookkeeper so they don’t have to bug you for a security code, especially if you’ve changed your password.

  6. Be sure to save money for taxes.

  7. Set money aside for reserves.

  8. Understand that a profit on paper does not = bank balance.

Jo Ann Richards is a native Californian now living in Portland OR. She has been a bookkeeper since 1976, has worked as an employee and has been self-employed for the 2nd time since 2007. Crunching numbers is a skill inherited from her father and grandfather. Her thriving bookkeeping practice has clients on both the East and West Coasts of the US plus a client in England. She is the mother of a grown daughter and proud grandmother of three. She’s been married for over 19 years.

Jo Ann’s book is available at dragonhillbooks.net. To get in contact with Jo Ann you can email her at joann@midlifemagic.biz. She is also on LinkedIn, Facebook, & Instagram.

During our initial discussion to plan this episode Jacqy and I discovered we had both held and removed the same limiting belief around money. We always had enough, but we never had extra. We would both put off doing fun activities or buying things we needed to replace because we felt we couldn’t afford them. For both of us, this lack mindset stemmed from childhood events. Independently from each other, we each went through the process of identifying and clearing this block to move forward into an abundance mindset.

“Awareness is the key to all change.”

Throughout this episode Jacqy teaches how to identify and begin to clear limiting beliefs. She emphasizes the importance of our words and how we create our reality with our words and thoughts. She not only explains the importance of being aware of our current thoughts, but how critical it is to decide what program you would like to run instead. If you don’t ask for what you want, you won’t get it.

One of the most helpful tools is when Jacqy walks me through an anxiety protocol during the show. It only took about a minute and it really worked! My thoughts and my attitude around the money issue I chose completely changed. I’ll be returning to this exercise regularly.

Jacqy is a Mindset Coach and Transformational Trainer. She worked as a High School English and History Teacher for 16 years before discovering the untapped power and potential of the unconscious mind and completing a set of intense trainings in Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnosis, Time Line Therapy (TLT) and NLP Coaching.

After experiencing the tools herself as a client, she went from being a depressed, anxious, people pleasing perfectionist on the edge of burnout to an empowered, perfectly imperfect Coach and Transformational Trainer who is on a mission to help others step into their power and light up the world.

You can connect with Jacqy on LinkedIn and on Instagram @jacqystewart.coaching. Sign up for her upcoming training an score some freebies on her website https://jacqystewart.com.

We start off this episode by discussing the concept of success. Empath, Michelle J. Howe teaches there are two types of success: inner and outer. She explains that outer success is following someone else’s script. It’s the plan we think we need to follow based on what others expect of us. Inner success is following our own script and it’s the only way we’ll be truly happy

“If you sculpt your life with a priority for inner success and feeling good, the outer success will come from that.”

As we continue, Michelle shares her story of how she began her career as a certified public accountant (CPA). When she realized her true path and switched over to empathic coaching there were many people who questioned her decision and told her she was doing the wrong thing. Michelle points out that everything she’s done in the past has perfectly prepared her for what she is doing now.

When Kimberly talks to her clients about the importance of preparing for their financial future it’s not just something she read in a book, it’s something she’s lived. Kimberly watched her grandmother build a financial empire of rental properties and businesses only to have it slowly whittled away by the expenses of caring for her mother, her brother, and her husband. Ultimately, by the time she needed the money to care for herself there wasn’t much left and she ended up living with family instead.

“After X time, maybe 2 years in, hey, I can’t really afford $6k a month.”

In this episode Kimberly shares her family story of having wealth but not being able to pass it on to the next generation because of lingering illness. We teach the rule of 72 and discuss the many benefits of life insurance as a wealth protecting and wealth building building tool.

Kimberly talks about the week she found search results for 780,000 posts on GoFundMe requesting help with final expenses just within the US. We talk about how many families use GoFundMe to cover final expenses for their loved ones and how this could be so easily changed through even a small life insurance policy.

Kimberly is a licensed financial educator, who teaches individuals what’s not taught in school. She can be reached through her Link Tree at https://linktr.ee/ktromatore.

I am where I am and that’s ok is just one of Nichole Jones’ 12 tenets of abundance. In this episode of MoneyHeart she shares them all (and two extras) to help us advance in our journeys to create the future we desire.

"Money doesn’t solve money problems."

After being stuck in the cycle of thinking “I just need ___” Nichole chose to break free and change her thinking about money and abundance. She has compiled a list of the concepts which have helped her the most and uses these concepts to help her clients ease into the flow of abundance rather than always fighting against the current.

Nichole’s 12+2 tenets of abundance are…

  1. Money doesn’t solve money problems.

  2. I am where I am and that is ok.

  3. Don’t focus on reality!

  4. Living within your means is an act of self-love.

  5. Money doesn’t define your worthiness, neither does debt.

  6. Act as if and feel like you will feel if you have money. Visualize and feel.

  7. Money is prana (life force energy), it needs to flow.

  8. Gratitude is the ultimate state of receivership.

  9. Feel all of your feelings, avoid spiritual bypassing.

  10. Manifestation responds to vibration.

  11. Is this an upper limit problem?

  12. Your outer world reflects your inner world.

  13. I am 100% responsible for my results.

  14. Get curious.

You can download a copy of the 12 tenets at nicholejones.com/money.

If you would like to get in touch with Nichole you can email her at nichole@nicholejones.com or set up a consultation at consultwithnichole.as.me/consult.

Aleta Laurence has been retired for the past 19 years. She learned money management by necessity when pregnant with her first child, which was ME! In this episode she shares how she saved diligently and budgeted carefully to build up enough retirement savings to last her throughout her later years. Reflecting on her first full-time salaried job she points out that the take-home pay is never as much as you think it will be.

“Of course, then the taxes come out, and the social security comes out, and the copay for the health insurance comes out. And so of course I had a lot less money than I thought I was going to have, but I saved anyway."

More than once Aleta mentions how fortunate she feels to have had all the money stuff work out. She occasionally needed a little bit of help along the way in the form of loans which she paid back, but overall it was her consistency in saving and spending wisely which made the difference. She does mention that in hindsight, she thinks it would have been beneficial to have taken more vacations and time off to avoid burnout. Join us for a trip down memory lane!

Aleta has a matters degree in urban planning and is the former planning director for Riverside County, California. I feel very fortunate to have been able to interview my mom on the show.

After we finished recording she added that she should have told everyone to exercise and brush their teeth. She says if you do those all along you won’t have big problems later but if you don’t, you will struggle, and you can’t make up for it later.

Conrad Ruiz thinks about time a little differently from most. At time of recording he was 26 and his father was 95 years old. His entire life Conrad has felt the pressure of limited time with his “old man”. Several years ago Conrad was diagnosed with a kidney condition which essentially cut his life expectancy in half. After several years in biomedical engineering trying to discover a cure, he really starting thinking about how to maximize all the time he has.

“We are all under this societal pressure that our time is our money and we need to figure out a way to make the most of it.”

In this episode Conrad and I discuss how individuals choose to spend their time and the concept of diminishing returns. We talk in depth about the value of time. Instead of exploring the emotional side of money (this show’s theme) we explore the emotional side of time.

Conrad is the Founder of Well Aware and Co-founder of Intro’d. Conrad studied biomedical engineering after he was made aware that he had only one kidney with multiple cysts. Rather than continue down his path of study, Conrad’s ultimate reflections on struggling with his and his father’s health led him to focus more on time and time management. Conrad loves communicating via email. To reach him you can send an email to cruiz@wellaware.me.

Just about every couple has been in a money fight at some point. Even a fight triggered by something else can have a root cause which is a money issue. Financial coach, Stephen Finney, helps couples stop fighting about money. He shares the importance of getting to the main issue to start to solve the problem which might be less complicated than we think.

“I’m not stressed because we don’t have the money. I’m stressed because I don’t have clarity and confidence around where our money’s going. If I did, it would probably be fine.”

Stephen shares his first 6 steps on how to recover from a money fight and we discuss the best ways to diffuse the situation quickly so positive actions can happen.

  1. Take some time to process. Emotions are high, one of you needs time to process emotion.

  2. Gain awareness around your thoughts. Are you blaming? Building your case against them? Just ask yourself without self-judgment what you are doing.

  3. Find the 1% of the conflict that YOU were responsible for. Own it, admit it to yourself. Put them first in spite of it. This is hard. The risk is that they won’t reciprocate. Do it anyway!

  4. Approach them and own your part, without blaming them.

  5. THEN, and only then: Use a “when, I felt” statement. When this situation happened, I felt ______.

  6. Get some help! Don’t wait. Use me or a counselor to be a third party. It’s ok to ask for help.

When Chris Rivera helps clients change their thinking he doesn’t focus on who they are now, he focuses on helping them become the person they want to be. We have an amazing discussion on the importance of charging what you’re worth and how you can change your mindset to feel more comfortable doing so.

“When you undercharge someone what incentive do they have to stick with it?”

Chris shares how important it is to set a goal which inspires you and to just get started. We can’t know all the steps at the beginning so stop planning and get going! Once you are committed to the goal and take the first step you’ll be in a better position to figure out the next step.

Many entrepreneurs start a business to create something special. They have a gift or skill they want to share with the world through their business and in doing so, they want to create a sense of fulfillment, joy, happiness, and balance in their life. There’s a sense of peace that comes with creating a successful business.

Unfortunately, those same business owners are struggling for a variety of reasons. In many cases, they know what action steps they should be taking but they have difficulty following through. It’s the gap between what they know they should be doing and what they’re actually doing.

Chris works with entrepreneurs and network marketers on how to close that gap to begin following through the action steps that generate revenue and clients. Chris helps them build within themselves the future successful self that is worthy of achieving their goals. When his clients begin operating from that future successful self, success is no longer a guessing game; success becomes guaranteed.

Solo episode! Last year’s solo episode, Hindsight 2020: A Year In Review, was a fan favorite so I chose to make it a tradition and record another one to wrap up 2021. I asked my audience via social media what questions you would like me to answer. I got some great ones which resulted in quite a few interesting personal stories including the one about my biggest business failure. After that failure I was all kinds of distraught but people started calling me and saying this:

“Really sorry you guys closed, but... would you help me with?”

What else did I share in a 26-minute episode based on just three questions? Guess you’ll have to listen and find out. The questions I selected to answer during this episode were:

  1. I’m interested in a summary or common elements or attitudes of your guests who are “at ease” with abundance. From LaurieAnn Powell

  2. What was the biggest financial obstacle you overcame and how did you do it? From Tabitha L. Taylor

  3. What have been your greatest triumphs and challenges with your podcasts, and how did you respond/react to them? From Peter Biadasz

A huge thank you to all those who submitted questions. If your question wasn’t selected for the episode I’ve sent you a personal answer via direct message.

Wishing everyone a fantastic 2022 and beyond!

Alexandra Vincelli is the host of the podcast, The Anxious Millennial, and in this episode she and I dig into the topic of millennials and money. They feel the pressure to live “the dream”. You know, get a stable job, settle down, buy a house, and so on, but the conventional paths to accomplishing that dream no longer exist. A college degree doesn’t guarantee a stable job, the housing market currently favors sellers, not buyers, and millennials are pausing to evaluate their lives and consider other options.

“It comes down to balance and valuing life outside of the proverbial office.”

Many millennials experienced money as a taboo topic while growing up as their parents were navigating the great recession and even basic money management skills weren’t being taught in schools. With social media influencers telling millennials they are missing out if they aren’t traveling the world, and parents pressuring them to get a stable job in a market where there’s a shortage of stable jobs, millennials end up feeling… well, anxious. Alex tells it like it is and the incredible resilience of millennials comes through in her stories. She also shares some tips on how to get the intergenerational money conversation started.

Most people are nervous about senior living facilities because we have an old view of a them being similar to a hospital and we don’t want to surrender our independence. In this episode Miri Hadas Koller who has worked in the senior living sector for over 15 years shares what senior living is really like and gives us her best pro tips for selecting the right facility.

“Every time I walk into one I'm already choosing my suite.”

Miri points out that when living in a house alone most seniors are very alone. They don’t have anyone to talk to for days on end and often neglect their nutrition and other personal needs because it’s not very inspiring to cook or clean for just one person.

We discuss how the cost of a senior living facility covers everything including food, cleaning, transportation, and additional care as needed. Miri’s biggest tip is to visit the facility. She emphasizes how important it is to get a feel for the place and make sure the environment is one you (or your loved one) will enjoy.

Miri Hadas Koller is the CEO of Yee Hong Seniors Living and has almost 30 years of experience in all aspects of real estate, including the marketing of single-family homes and condominium properties, the management of commercial properties, and now almost 15 years experience in the Retirement Home sector.

As a couple they agreed to save for their son's education. Last spring he graduated from college without any student loan debt.

The title of this episode, "Hope is NOT a Strategy," is my very favorite quote from sales coach and founder of Bold Networking, Robert Johnson. Most new business owners are so excited about the possibilities of their business that they struggle to focus on the realities of their business. Even those of us who have been running a business for awhile are quite capable of convincing ourselves things are fine even when they may not be going so well.

"Am I lying to myself? Do I really have a business or not?"

In our discussion Robert and I cover some of the many mistakes the two of us have made in business, particularly the one where we thought our businesses would be our retirement plan and we didn’t need to save. Then we discuss how to fix and avoid making those mistakes yourself. Robert wisely brings up the power of having money set aside and not being the desperate person no one wants to date.

We also discuss the importance of having a business plan and holding yourself accountable just as if you had invested in a business you weren’t emotionally attached to, and were expecting a return on your investment. We even get to take a walk down memory lane and share about my first experiences with Bold Networking. All the way back to when I couldn’t even afford the membership dues.

Robert Johnson is the founder of Bold Networking and the Bold OS sales training. You can reach Robert directly by emailing RJ@boldnetworking.com or calling 918-928-7158. If you’d like to test drive one of his networking events or sales trainings for free email me at camille@serenityfinancial.us and I’ll hook you up.

At first Ramona Rogers resisted joining her mother in the childcare industry. In 2001 she finally stopped resisting and opened a daycare center. As it turned out she loved raising children to be the best they could possibly be and she recognized the importance of teaching them solid financial principles so they could build good money habits.

"You never know the seeds that you plant in those kids how far they're going to go."

Ramona set up a system of jobs and credits at her daycare center to reward the kids for doing helpful activities around the center. She focused on teaching them critical skills like delayed gratification and understanding needs vs. wants by allowing them to choose if they wanted to redeem their credits for small prizes or save them for special events like the carnival. They even held garage sales so the kids could sell items they no longer needed or wanted.

Years later, as some of the children Ramona worked with are now graduating from high school, they follow up with her and tell her how much they remember the money skills and habits she taught them. They are excited to share how they are putting money aside and their savings is growing.

As we approach the centennial of the Tulsa race massacre, Ramona and I also take the opportunity to discuss Black Wall Street and the power of spending money within a community.

Ramona is a personal development coach, and author, and is the CEO of Ramona Rogers Enterprises. She created the company because she believes that everyone should have an opportunity to live life without limits. By creating personal development educational tools and resources, individuals can continuously become the best possible version of themselves. Ramona believes that achievement and advancement should be the norm and not the exception.

Ramona can be reached via email at ramonalrogers5@gmail.com. Her children’s book about money habits and generational wealth is called Buck and Penny. It is available on her website buckandpenny.com and on Amazon. There is also a matching workbook: Buck and Penny – Understanding Money Interactive Workbook

After Dan Reynolds graduated from college he was looking for a job and the department of corrections was the first one to offer him a position. He figured if it didn’t work out, he would leave and find something else. Thirty-one years later, he was still working there. In this episode, Dan teaches us how money works for those who are in prison (inmates aren’t allowed to have cash) and shares some of the best stories from his years as a warden and consultant.

"The economy is certainly different in prison. Especially among inmates to inmates."

A prison is like it’s own community and has everything a community has from nurses, to teachers, to craftsmen. Supply and demand play a huge part in the value of items inside and each prison and its own micro-economy. As Dan traveled around the country performing audits he started asking other prison administrators to tell him their most interesting stories. His book, The Most Hilarious, Bizarre and Unusual Correctional Stories Ever Told, is available on Amazon.

Dan retired from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections in 2011, after serving 31 years. Positions he held during his career include correctional case manager, senior case manager, administrative assistant to a deputy director and warden, deputy warden, warden II, warden III, administrator of population management, assistant deputy director of the Security and Investigations Division, and administrator of community corrections.

He served at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary on three separate tours. He earned a bachelors degree in 1980, from Central State University and a master degree with honors in 2005, from the University of Central Oklahoma. He has served as a correctional consultant, independently and for the American Correctional Association, inspecting prisons throughout the United States.

He is a lifetime member of the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation and the Oklahoma Correctional Employees Memorial Foundation. Six of Dan’s books are available on Amazon under Dan M. Reynolds.

In this upbeat episode, mindset and strategy coach, Bridget Hom, introduces us to the concept of deservability. We discuss how we view ourselves, what factors in to how we develop that viewpoint, and how what we believe we deserve directly relates to how much money we make.

"The value is going to come back to you, but based on your level of deservability."

We talk about how to develop confidence and be strong in our beliefs of how much we deserve based on how much value we are adding to the world rather than basing it on what a particular job pays hourly. In addition to discussing deservability we also cover Bridget’s concept of a culture of connectivity and how we can be recognized and feel valuable based on who we are, not just what we’ve done.

Most people don’t like to think about life insurance because of what we typically have to do to get the money. What many people don’t know is that there is more to life insurance than just dying. In this episode, financial advisor, Brian Heins, teaches us how to take advantage of life insurance features while were alive.

"The goal is and the secret is... we can take the money out of this tax-free."

We discuss multiple tax benefits of life insurance like immediate vesting, and the ability to create income for yourself in retirement. The best part is that the money in a life insurance policy grows tax-deferred and can be accessed tax-free, which reduces how much you need to save to make your retirement income goals. He teaches us to ask our agents and advisors to illustrate these options for us and provided us with a sample illustration.

He also teaches us about the rule of 4% to help us figure out how much money needs to be saved, so we don’t run out of money in retirement. We talk about the ability of life insurance policies to guarantee how much money you’ll receive once turning on an income, and Brian clearly explains the investment options inside of a life insurance policy. Who knew!?

Brian Heins is owner of Firm Foundation HR and is a financial advisor. To get in touch with Brian you can call him at 949-413-3282 or email brian@ffhro.com.

PS: One of the “living benefits” we didn’t get into is the ability of life insurance to pay out a portion of the death benefit early (before death) if the insured has a qualifying terminal diagnosis, critical illness, critical injury, or chronic illness. Yet another life insurance secret that shouldn’t be a secret! When shopping for life insurance ask your agent if the policy they’ve recommended for you has this type of living benefits.

Marquess met and married his wife in just 85 days. Yep, 85 days! With such a short courtship they didn’t have much time to learn each other’s money management style. When it came time to make decisions about budgeting and spending their individual habits and preferences clashed… big time.

"Let's just say the worlds came crashing together."

Marquess shares the story of how he and his wife met, how they knew they were meant to be, and how they’ve worked through their money management differences. At first, they argued a lot. Then they figured out how to handle things more constructively. Marquess and I have a fabulous discussion on how money factors into a couple’s decisions and how each of us have our own values attached to how we budget, save, and spend. We also cover how pride and our egos so often get in the way of a productive discussion.

A lovely quote which Marquess learned and shares with us is, “You’re winning the argument, but you’re losing me.” He also reminds us to have grace with ourselves and not to compare to other couples, but to walk our own path together.

Marquess Dennis is the Executive Director of Birthright Living Legacy a non-profit dedicated to bringing men together to celebrate fatherhood. He can be reached through the Birthright Living Legacy website brlivinglegacy.com. He also has a podcast called Birthright Living Legacy and is looking for fathers to tell their stories.

One Friday afternoon Amy Campbell got called into the conference room at her corporate job. She was so dedicated to the company that when they told her they were going in a different direction she responded with, “Great, so where are we going?” They responded with, “That means without you, Campbell.” Totally in shock, Amy made a decision which changed her life completely.

"I think I'm just gonna get up and go to work on Monday."

Amy was (and still is) a single mother and she had been writing resumes on the side to bring in some extra income. Rather than hurry up and get married (her mother’s suggestion) or spend a bunch of energy job searching, Amy made the commitment to just keep going. We discuss how working in her gifts has turned out over the past 13 years, the empathy it created in her for those clients who come to her seeking help with their resumes, and how to be patient with your family and friends who just don’t understand what being an entrepreneur is like.

Amy is the Owner and Director of All That Happens! at The Red Checker, and principal writer at MyResumeLady.com. She can be reached through her website theredchecker.com or on LinkedIn.

Most doctors don’t have to worry too much about marketing. Their customers (aka: patients) need their services to relieve pain and stay alive, so they’re always in demand. Once hired by a clinic or hospital the doctor has a steady stream of patients as dictated by the patient’s health insurance policies.

Plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Brian Kent, has to do things a little differently. His work is considered “elective” and not covered by insurance. His patients pay out of pocket. Therefore, he has to have a website, gather testimonials, post before and after photos, advertise, and maintain a stellar reputation to keep his business running just like most other service based businesses.

"I have a lot of inside information and that's more than most people have when they choose somebody."

Dr. Kent and I discuss how when he needs to go to a doctor he can ask his colleagues, but when the general public has to choose a doctor it’s pretty much luck of the draw. He points out that in other performance based fields, like professional sports, there are tons of statistics on which the players are judged. In medicine there’s no public reporting of how quickly patients recover or how successful treatments and surgeries are at solving a patient’s problem. We also get into the difficult problem of who decides how much the doctor gets paid, how many other layers of people get involved, and how that effects what patients pay.

Dr. Kent can be reached by calling his office at (918) 994-4100. Those before and after photos we mention are available on his website briankentmd.com. His book, S.N.A.F.U. – A Medical Satire, is available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.

Ever make a money decision that just didn’t make any sense at all? Dr. Alexandra Luce specializes in teaching people in the intelligence field how to use the information they have to make better decisions about the future. In this episode she shares about a time when she compounded one major money blunder (not saving for taxes) by adding a second one (paying her boyfriends taxes instead of her own). We discuss what’s going on in our brains when we make irrational decisions and why it’s so darn hard to make good choices for our future selves.

"We have a tendency towards very short-term thinking... We also have a really powerful capacity to ignore things."

Our capacity to ignore things is great if we want to focus, but not so great when we need to make decisions that will affect us in the long term. Alex shares an amazing amount of insight on how our brains work when making all sorts of decisions. She teaches us how to hack in and reprogram our brains to be kind to our future selves and make our lives what we want them to be.

Deborah Jenkins is one of those people who’s actually living the dream. She retired at age 45, traveled the world as a part of Doctors Without Borders for 12 years, and now runs a profitable HVAC company with her husband. An expert at living below her means and growing her wealth, Deborah shares her wisdom on the hidden costs of owning a home and her formula for calculating them.

"The wealthy only pay for things once."

Deborah teaches us about the importance of saving consistently because in some years hardly anything will need repair and in other years almost everything will. She says we need to “save for the biggies” because we know they will happen, buy we don’t know when. By saving we’re more likely to get to replace and repair on our schedule instead of scrambling to solve a problem after the fact. Most importantly, Deborah shares how having the money saved ahead of time saves money and grows your wealth in the long run.

Deborah Jenkins and her husband, Julius Warren, own Doc J’s Heat and Air Residential HVAC, focused on pre-planning heating and air conditioning system replacements and planned maintenance. They can be reached through their website docjsheatandair.com.

For the last episode of 2020 I chose to record a solo episode. Just me and mic. It was exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time. In this episode I talk bit about my year, how MoneyHeart got started, and my current health challenges.

"It’s definitely an uphill battle, but I’m confident I’ll make it."

I very rarely discuss anything even remotely controversial in public. However, I felt it was time for me to open up a bit and discuss race, my personal experience, and share my thoughts on wealth building. I’m sure there was much more to cover, but it’s a start.

When I’m not working I enjoy gardening, super hero movies, and hanging with my family. I can be reached through my company website serenityfinancial.us.

Many people think happiness is just right around the corner. If we could just get the new car, house, or job, if we could lose 10 pounds, or find the perfect partner, or make more money, we think we would be happy. We try the same things over and over and it keeps not working.

"When I get here, I'll be grateful and happy. Instead of being grateful and happy HERE."

hen Chrissy was first looking at colleges her guidance counselor told her not to bother because she wasn’t smart enough. They said she was a bubbly cheerleader type and she should go find herself a nice husband. Despite the discouragement Chrissy went on to earn her doctorate and become a university professor. She also retained her bubbly personality and enjoys helping people on their journey to find happiness. She explains why our brains tend to go negative and teaches us how to appreciate what’s right now. Chrissy also shares tips on successful journaling and a couple of other tools from her books.

Dr. Chrissy Whiting-Madison obtained her BA in Psychology from Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, her MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from Langston University and her PhD in Rehabilitation & Research from the University of Arkansas. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Rogers State University where she avidly researches positive psychology, happiness, humor, and joy.

Dr. Chrissy published her first book this past year, called Choosing Happiness, which is available at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon. She has presented all over the United States and is currently working on her second book, Even Happier.

When Dr. Chrissy is not teaching, reading or traveling, she loves scary movies and spending time with her friends and family. She is also a proud mom of one daughter and six cats!

Quality performers pour tons of time, energy, and money into their craft. Lessons, rehearsals, costumes, makeup, and so very much more. Then they get asked to perform for free. When shutdown happened many of us turned to the arts, to television, movies, and music to keep us entertained and preserve our mental health. At the same time those artists and crews were being deemed “non-essential”. Diana Christine gives us a backstage look into the life of a performing artist.

"It's more than what it looks like."

When Covid hit every project Diana was working on and every workshop she’d planned to attend was cancelled. As we talk she shares what she did to keep herself in shape, the advice she got from her mentors and teachers, and what she did to keep her skills up and keep earning income as a performer during quarantine.

When Debra and her husband were as she says “raking it in” they didn’t worry at all about how much they were spending or what they were buying. Big house, horses, new clothes, they had them all! She remembers going to the grocery store and just getting whatever she wanted without a list or a budget, but their lifestyle of instant gratification didn’t last forever.

"Saving... it didn't even cross my mind. It seemed like the present was endless in what it could provide for us."

From frugal to flush and back to frugal again, Debra Parkhurst shares her story of choosing personal happiness over a huge paycheck and how she and her husband adapted from a lifestyle of spending to a lifestyle of saving and buying responsibly. After getting into debt and going through several health challenges she’s learned to delay gratification and how to get nice things on a budget.

Debra Parkhurst is a former data processing professional and has an applied psychology degree in small group behavior. She was a human and equine massage therapist for 9 years. Then she got involved in senior care and did everything from hospice to assisted living for 20 years. She retired from senior care twice, ran her own cottage bakery, and is now fully retired. These days salary is coming up earlier and earlier in the job interview process. Most people struggle to know what’s ok to say, what’s not ok to say, and how to tactfully address this often sticky question. If you answer too high they won’t offer you the job. If you answer too low, you risk being significantly underpaid. If you’ve taken time off work for health or family or are switching industries you might not know where to start.

"It feels a little bit like quicksand..."

Career coach, Iris Culp, is passionate about making sure people don’t undersell themselves. In this episode she and I discuss what is a good answer to the salary question and how to handle other tricky interview topics. She provides some tips on presenting your best self in person and on LinkedIn as well as what factors do go into determining a salary. Maybe most importantly, Iris reminds us that what a person gets paid does not define their worth as a human being.

Iris Culp is a leadership and career coach and the owner of IC Growth. She can be reached through her website ic-growth.com and on social media @ic-growth.

Michael was very upfront about wanting to discuss fear when we were planning this episode. He was finally on the other side of being very afraid of whether or not his physical therapy business was going to survive Covid-19. Two months of downturn translated into six months of him and his family barely scraping by. His clients were so nervous about people coming into their homes in March and April of 2020 that he essentially had no clients.

"It wasn't because they didn't want help. They really just were so afraid..."

Michael’s saving grace was having started his business without debt and with an emergency fund in place. He started small and didn’t over extend to try to impress with a large space or fancy, expensive equipment. In this episode we discuss how his clients and followers were practically paralyzed with fear when he offered them a virtual program and how he’s now building his business to have multiple streams of income and be stronger for the future.

Growing up Victoria was taught if you get good grades and go to a successful college you'll have a successful life. She dug in, loved school, and followed the plan... until the debt started to crush her. After two years of college she was $30,000 in debt and that was with having earned a 50% scholarship! She couldn't see herself ever getting out of debt if she continued down that path, so she left college and switched to online courses in a field that interested her.

"Don't let any outside forces influence your decision to attend college. Keeping up with the Jones's is so real. We think they are living their dream life but in reality they are downing."

Victoria loves her career as a nutritional coach. She was able to train and get certified through online classes for much less than the cost of a traditional college. We discuss how her student loan debt combined with her husband's student loan debt has slowed their plans to purchase their dream home and how it's changed her thinking about the value of college. We also discuss what they're teaching their kids now and their strategy on how they plan to help their young children pay for college (or not) when they get older.

Attorney Jamie Miller says, “The internet is great for a lot of things. Not for legal advice.” Agreed! In this episode we discuss the ins and outs of wills, trusts, and estate planning. Jamie shares about the struggles and guilt people often feel when trying to decide how they want their assets divided among their children, family, and/or favorite charities. Many people feel obligated to split assets evenly amongst their children, but what if one child has been their care taker for several years, or a child has a gambling problem?

"It's not always about the money. It's about the emotion that goes behind it and the entire history and emotional baggage." Jamie explains that many people tend to make assumptions in estate planning like thinking they must put the oldest child in charge or making both children co-trustees. She reminds us that choosing a trustee is not a measure of our love for them, it’s more about logistics and what makes the most sense from a practical standpoint. The most difficult time to do estate planning is during a crisis, so as with all matters financial, the best time to start is today.

Business coach, Eric Knam, often sees businesses owners who don’t know what their profit is or how their business is doing until the end of the quarter or sometimes the end of the year. In this episode he shares with us how this isn’t just a result of poor business management it’s a result of mindset. We fall into the trap of “do do do” and forget to think about what we really want to have in all areas of our lives. Not just the fancy car, but the stable income, meaningful relationships, and spiritual peace.

"We're not humans doing, we're not humans having, we're humans being; and that tends to be the area we ignore."

We discuss the equation for success “Be x Do = Have” and the importance of the “Be” portion of that equation. Eric explains how just working harder (more doing) isn’t enough and he provides some simple ways to start raising our “Be” to achieve maximum “Have.”

Eric Knam is the owner and CEO of Action Coach Tulsa. He can be reached through his website actioncoachtulsa.com. He’s offering a complimentary strategy session for all of our listeners and viewers which is a $497 value. All you need to do to book is contact him and mention MoneyHeart.

One experience in Danielle’s childhood of being told was irresponsible changed the way she viewed herself from the time she was 8-years old until just recently. It caused her to push herself to be very organized and responsible as a parent and as a professional and she still holds on to that value today. When she experienced a debilitating illness and her husband died within an 8-week period, Danielle’s world came crashing down. As the medical bills mounted, budgeting went out the window. She couldn’t help feeling like it was all somehow her fault and if she had only “been more responsible” things might have turned out better.

“When you have nothing but time on your hands you can get into the weeds in your head really quickly and get really lost.”

Three years later, at a financial workshop, Danielle had an epiphany. She realized she was very responsible in many areas. She started asking questions and learning about how money works. She wanted to feel more empowered, so she read books and continued to learn and search for answers. She says, “You’ll find a way if you really want to.”

Sometimes Danielle still feel irresponsible spending money, even when buying groceries or a two-dollar ice cream. However, she pays herself first and has a plan in place so a situation like what happened before doesn’t ever happen again. She encourages us all to pick one thing and start somewhere instead of being paralyzed by overwhelm.

Several years ago, on the day after Christmas, Nicole and her husband had their bank account emptied by another bank which was collecting on past debts. They couldn’t make rent by January, so they lost the apartment where they were living. They couldn’t move forward on the custom home they were building and lost their earnest money deposit. They had nothing, and were forced to move in with her husband's parents.

When Nicole was growing up her family never talked about money. She always thought they were doing just fine. Her mom wanted to protect her as all parents want to protect their children, but by not learning about how money works during childhood, Nicole had to learn the hard way as an adult. Now she’s doing things much differently with her children.

“You want them to always have that security that you’re taking care of them. When you keep things from them they kind of lose that security.”

Most of Nicole’s friends think she’s crazy for sharing how much she and her husband make and other financial information with their kids. After recovering from so much debt and such a difficult situation Nicole is committed to make generational change in the way money is viewed, managed, and understood in her family. She also candidly shares her views on saving and paying for college.

My husband Tony and I came from different backgrounds and had very different money styles when we got married. This caused quite a bit of tension in the beginning as both of us were uncomfortable with the other person’s style of managing money. In this episode we unpack our initial differences, discuss how we’ve both changed, and share where we are now.

"Where you come from shapes your idea of money and what you do with it."

Tony Diaz is an e-commerce business consultant, a multi-time national champion martial artist and former member of Team USA. He’s an author, a competitive cyclist, race promoter, and runs the Tulsa Cycling Events Calendar. He’s also been my husband since 2002. Seniors lose at least $2.6 billion a year due to financial abuse… and that’s just the reported cases. Cheryl Doyle, senior and dementia care expert, and I discuss how to handle the aging process and how important it is to keep a continuous conversation going, so everyone involved knows the plan. She shares how to make sure the aging person is getting what they want, whether that’s at home or in a facility, how to spot potential dementia before it’s been diagnosed, and how to get the conversation started early.

Let’s face it. How you present yourself matters. When we wear something inexpensive that isn’t comfortable or doesn’t fit well we typically don’t feel much or it may even bring us down. When we wear something that fits well, is made well, is comfortable, and looks amazing on us, we feel amazing and we present ourselves as such. So how do we show up in the best way for ourselves without breaking the bank? In this episode fashion designer, LaTasha Cobler, and I explore fast fashion marketing traps, the value of investing in yourself, buying with intention, and how to build a sustainable wardrobe.

"Are you investing in yourself, in your image? Are you putting your best foot forward? Or are you not showing up for yourself and not showing up for your business? That will make a huge difference."

The day before LaTasha’s sister passed away they made vision boards together. Empowering women through fashion was on LaTasha’s board and one night she decided she was going to honor herself and her sister and make it happen. She didn’t even know how to sew when she started and now she is an award-winning designer with her own fashion line, Madame L. How quickly could your business recover if the power went out, or there was a natural disaster, or one of the owners got really sick? Before starting his current company, Total Publishing and Media, Peter Biadasz was a bank auditor and part of his job was to audit disaster recovery plans of billion-dollar banks. They couldn’t afford to be down for even a few minutes. We discuss how to get started building a disaster recovery plan and how business owners can protect themselves and their businesses from sudden disaster situations by thinking way ahead, thinking way way ahead, and then preparing to adapt beyond the plan if needed.

"Knowing that you are prepared emotionally, spiritually, physically, for the plan to happen is really most of the plan. Just because you have a binder that says here's my disaster recovery plan doesn't necessarily mean that's what's gonna happen." To keep his mindset (and thereby everything else) on track, Peter has developed a daily checklist which he completes every morning. It includes a review of both his spiritual life and personal life, as well as his businesses, income streams, and hobbies. It will be a part of his next book and he’s been kind enough to share it with us. You can download it here: Priorities Worksheet by Peter Biadasz.

Peter is a graduate of Florida State University. His passion for and expertise in the area of networking has benefited many for nearly two decades and led to his first two books. Peter has also been known to liven up his speaking engagements by utilizing his professional trumpet talent. He is the author of 17 books, and counting, and the president of Total Publishing and Media. Peter and I met through networking and he happens to be the publisher of my book The Shake Up: Misfit to Best Fit in 30 Days.

As a nation we spend trillions on health care each year. In 2006 when Dr. Tanya Jackson found herself frequently visiting the doctor, taking antibiotics to combat recurring sinus infections, and taking pain medication for a torn meniscus, she started to search for a way to improve her health. Turns out she’d heard the message as a kid and then forgot to apply it when adult life got hectic.

"It's just planning ahead a little bit. It's really what our grandmas said. Eat your fruits and vegetables." Now, over 14 years later, Tanya has learned it’s not just one thing, it’s a combination of sleep, food, exercise, and reduced stress that brings quality of life. We have a candid discussion about what really matters in our health, how anxiety and fear can take a toll, and whether it’s worth it to pay now for quality food and self care, or better to pay later when major health issues arise. We also get to reminisce a bit about our Grand Canyon adventures.

Connect with Tanya to chat about health, nutrition, and the Grand Canyon on Facebook by searching for Tanya K. Jackson or via email at tanya4juiceplus@gmail.com.

Ever buy yourself something nice and then feel guilty about spending the money? Michele Chiappetta grew up watching her mom save, save, save, and her dad joyously spend. When it was time to manage her own money her desire to save would stop her from buying anything until she absolutely needed something. Then with limited time and options she would buy several in an attempt to solve the problem and still not end up with anything she really wanted. This continuously left her feeling frustrated and guilty.

"When is it ok to spend?"

During our discussion, Michele and I share stories of purchasing fails and explore ways to be more thoughtful in our buying decisions. She insightfully points out that guilt happens when we know somewhere deep down our purchase is not worth it. When we align our spending with our values and focus on the goal of the purchase and our desired experience, the guilt goes away. Michele shares some of her strategies for finding that balance and how she’s learned to create guilt-free spending experiences.

Michele Chiappetta is a writer, editor, and self-proclaimed cat herder. She can be contacted through social media @chippermuse or through her websites chippermuse.com and michelechiappetta.com.

After 22 years in the Navy as an EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) officer, John Alford retired and quickly discovered there was no set of instructions to guide one in the transition from a highly structured system, like the military, to the life of an entrepreneur. John never had to write a resume or negotiate a salary until his mid-forties. He found himself in the position of having all the skills and experience to complete the work as a private contractor while being up against a steep learning curve for developing the skills to actually negotiate and keep the contract.

"Having to go from a set pay to a band or a scale that was negotiable was a very big deal."

John speaks very openly about the seemingly random knowledge gaps he faced, having doubts about whether or not he could even make it as an entrepreneur, and how he was inspired by watching his mother build a tutoring business after years of being a school teacher.

John Alford is an entrepreneur who works on a variety of defense contracts and he and Camille are both a part of the Five Rings Financial team. John is happy to talk with other veterans looking to transition. He can be reached through his Facebook and LinkedIn profiles or by emailing johnalford@fiveringsfinancial.com.

Lisa Odon was “a little bit oblivious” to money when she was growing up until during her sophomore year of high school when her parents sold their family business and had to use the money to pay her father’s medical bills when he became ill. They made things work, but there was always a constant fear of not having enough money. This caused her mom, a child of the depression, to start hoarding everything so she would never have to do without. Lisa remembers being told to “Marry a wealthy man so you’ll have opportunities.” Subconsciously, the message she received was that she could never be wealthy in her own right.

"The only way I could become wealthy was to marry into wealth."

After a career in teaching, Lisa got into sales. It was at that point when the fear of becoming wealthy really started to surface as she continued to hold herself back. In this episode she shares about some of the work she’s done to change her mindset and the amazing results she’s now having. Lisa speaks very candidly about her “God given right to prosper”, how faith and wealth can walk hand in hand, and how her journey to become wealthy has actually challenged her to go deeper in her faith.

"I wanted to be able to transition from just being able to pay the bills and have a little bit left over to really understanding what wealth meant."

Lisa wants to live in a world where “thou shalt belly laugh daily” becomes the 11th commandment, singing becomes our universal language, confidence robbers are taken captive, destroyed, and forever forbidden to roam the earth, and dog hair is repelled off living room floors by an invisible force field.

As a music teacher with more than 35 years of experience, she found her most creative self when she was working with children. As a sales professional with 6 years of experience, she found her administrative and business-minded self with a unique ability to network and connect with people. As a volunteer group facilitator at her church, she found her leadership and “I’m kicking butt” self. Now she is on a journey of melding all three worlds together in her ministerial pursuits alongside her husband, Michael.

When she is not creating Facebook Live video clips to help the human population sleep better at night, or having conversations with people who want more energy or supplements for their workouts, you can find her reading the Bible or a Jen Sincero book, creating an old-fashioned family photo album, watching reruns of “The Golden Girls,” or crocheting an afghan that takes three years to finish. Lisa’s book list is available here.

Get practical tips on how to sleep better at night by watching her video clips on Facebook or LinkedIn. You can also contact her at lisa@thewellnessgangster.com or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/lisa.odon.

Dee didn’t grow up with an abundance mindset. Her parents had a modest income and their default answer to purchase requests was, “no, we can’t afford that” or “no, you can’t have that.” A few years ago a friend's post on Facebook sparked something in her and completely changed her way of thinking. "All things are possible. I just need to work to make it happen."

As Dee turns 50 this year she is committed to living her best abundant life filled with gratitude. She shares her views on abundance in her life, how it relates to business relationships, and how easy it is to feel when someone is operating from a scarcity mindset.

After 40 years of teaching, Rena Cook retired and opened her own small business as a presentation coach. She candidly shared, “When I retired from teaching I opened my business, Vocal Authority, and I had no idea how to run a business.” She was accustomed to the education system where you work your tail off for a pre-determined salary and that’s the way it is. Deciding what to charge for giving a speech or providing coaching required a major mindset shift to recognize and embrace her 6-figure skills. "I have to practice wrapping my mind around the fact that I should be commanding more money."

Listen to Rena tell the story of the first time she asked for what she was worth and what inspired her to leave a university teaching position during her tenure year. Rena Cook is a voice, speech, and presentation coach, author, and TEDx speaker.
