Chuck and Elsie Wetzler came to Spirit Lake in 1964 and became pillars of our community. Young Women of Action - Lexi Duffy is an Okoboji High School Senior just selected to the 60th Annual United States Senate Youth Program in March. Lexi is just one of two students by the Iowa Board of Education in our entire state. Lexi tells us about the process for being selected and her outstanding High School career in the many facets that make her an inspirational leader and a true Woman of Action in the Iowa Great Lakes.
Colored Christmas lights on a large tree..singing choirs, toys & bags of candies for every Spirit Lake boy and girl and of course an appearance by Santa Clause. Sounds familar but this happend on December 15, 1915 in downtown Spirit Lake. 1,000 children were given a Merry Christmas on that day exactly 106 years ago today. Dewey Grothaus and Lyle Daburn spent decades for the DOT in the worst of winters wrath clearing roads, finding lost motorists, delivering babies, re establishing electricity for city's and more.

Women of Action Thursday turns to Foster Parents, Foster & Adoptive Children. Action was what was needed and accomplished by Tina Vande Hoef. Tina's family saw the need in Iowa for these children and transplanted the idea of Kaden's Kloset/Kings and Queens Local for that purpose. Over time and with wonderful community involvement and volunteers they serve 4 counties providing clothing, supplies and dignity to kids and families. The impact is huge and Okoboji is better for it.

Jezzika's family has had many trials, fears and victories over Samyuel's 6 years on this Earth. She is here to tell a story of experiences some can relate to and others cannot. LF Williamz was a photographic pioneer in the early days of Okoboji tourism. Not only he capture the moments of history around 100 years ago, he used his craft to create postcards for early lake visitors to take home and share on a place called Okoboji. It wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that natural untouched land on our lakes is rare. Abby Terpstra, Director of Philanthropy for the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation informs us that the foundation has an option on 50 acres with 2,000 feet of undeveloped shoreline on East Lake Okoboji. They are within 1.2 Million Dollars of being able to purchase that land and preserve the natural space. But time is of the essence as they must acquire the land by Labor Day, just over two weeks away. There are numerous ways you can help and every dollar counts.

The future of Okoboji is secure through our phenomenal area youth!. 25 students from Okoboji, Spirit Lake & Lake Park schools were accepted into the Youth In Philanthropy program with the Okoboji Foundation. Working hard in monthly meetings...learning the needs of non profits & organizations in the Iowa Great Lakes and raising $48,000 to address the needs of our region. Kiley Miller CEO of the Iowa Lakes Corridor of Development Corp. has overseen the Corridor supporting more than 40 business recruitment and expansion projects, more than 190 entrepreneurs and start-up businesses, and the construction of more than 200 housing units. The organization also launched multiple new initiatives to answer the region’s worker shortage, support entrepreneurs and business executives, and help local towns become more competitive in attracting and retaining businesses and families. Kiley leaves NW Iowa in February but he has much to be proud of with growth and development for the four county area the Corridor serves.

How appropriate is it as I hit the #200th episode I also have the honor to interview Aubrey LaFoy. Aubrey is a World War II Veteran and as we honor our Veterans today...it is wonderful to hear Aubrey's stories of his own tour of duty, the men he served with and his memories and those passed to him by his father who served in World War I. And as a historian and author he also shares stories of Dickinson County's Veterans and how many are buried here including two men who died in the War of 1812. Others are from the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. We salute Aubrey and all Veterans today, deceased and still with us and we thank you for defending our freedom.
