“Let us also remember Peter: three times he denied Jesus, precisely when he should have been closest to him. And when he hits rock bottom, he meets the gaze of Jesus who patiently, wordlessly, says to him, “Peter, don’t be afraid of your weakness, trust in me.” Peter understands, he feels the loving gaze of Jesus, and he weeps. How beautiful is this gaze of Jesus—how much tenderness is there! Brothers and sisters, let us never lose trust in the patience and mercy of God!” — Pope Francis
“Peter was a sinner, but not corrupt, eh? Sinners, yes, everyone: corrupt, no. I once knew of a priest, a good parish pastor who worked well. He was appointed bishop, and he was ashamed because he did not feel worthy, he had a spiritual torment. And he went to the confessor. The confessor heard him and said, ‘But do not worry. If after the [mess Peter made of things], they made him Pope, then you go ahead! .’ The point is that this is how the Lord is. That’s the way He is. The Lord makes us mature with many meetings with Him, even with our weaknesses, when we recognize [them], with our sins.” — Pope Francis

Father Sibley's homily for the 4th Sunday of Advent wherein he discusses our desire for knowledge about God's will and compares it to the faith of Our Lady.
This is Fr. Sibley's homily from the Winter 2017 Baccalaureate Mass at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church.
We normally think of St. John the Baptist as somber and serious. However, there are good reasons to see him as joyful. Father examines these reasons and sees how they apply to our lives.
These are talks from a retreat titled "Mary for Today" given by Fr. Sibley at Sacred Heart Retreat House in Alhambra, CA during the summer of 2017. All of the talks focus on the topic of living an authentic Marian devotion in the 21st century.

As the season of Advent begins, there is no better way to prepare ourselves for Christmas that by making a good confession. However, many people struggle with fear and shame and stay away from confession. Father looks at the phenomenon of shame and encourages us to overcome it to receive the Lord's mercy this Advent.
Notice in this Sunday's gospel that Jesus is judging the nations. In biblical parlance the "nations" mean the gentiles, those who are not part of God's chosen people.
Recognizing this distinction, Father Sibley looks at what our attitude towards non-Christians ought to be.
In this homily, Father Sibley tries to dispel misconceptions about the Catholic priesthood by offering insights into who priests really are and what they really feel.
“I know now that true charity consists in bearing all our neighbors' defects--not being surprised at their weakness, but edified at their smallest virtues.” — St. Therese Of Lisieux in "Story Of A Soul"
Using this quote from The Little Flower, Fr. Sibley look at how the command to love your neighbor as yourself should be lived out practically. In doing so, he shows how love, patience, and mercy intersect.
Instead of looking at what we should repay to Caesar, in this homily, Father looks at what we should repay to God.
But more that what we owe God, but how our concept of who God is and our relationship to him, impacts how we live our faith.
hy would someone turn down an invitation to attend a New Orleans Saints game? There are numerous possible reasons, but the most fundamental is that they are not a Saints fan.
Father looks at this reality in relationship to the invitation the Father gives to us to attend Holy Mass on Sunday and our identity as Catholics.
St. Paul tells us to have "no anxiety at all" in today's second reading. This seems impossible in our world today so filled with news of violence, natural disasters, and political turmoil.
Father looks at how to live out St. Paul's command by comparing the life and teaching of St. Therese with Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the movie "IT."
Saints and killer clowns - sounds crazy, I know, but give it a listen.
Building on the homilies from the past two weeks, Fr. Sibley offers a message of hope. Instead of letting shame and guilt cripple you spiritually, he urges humility and The Little Way of St. Therese of Lisieux as a means of clinging to Christ.
The Pareto Principle is better known as the 80/20 rule - 80% of effects come from 20% of causes. This is especially true in the Church.
Father looks at today's gospel - the parable of the workers - through the Pareto Principle and gives suggestions on how the 80% in the Church can become part of the 20%.

In 1999, I took a pilgrimage to Naples, Italy for the Feast of St. Januarius in hopes of witnessing the blood miracle. In this homily I tell two stories from that trip - one how St. Januarius saved me from choking on a cheese ball and the other about the miracle St. Januarius could not work.
"Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight." (Sirach 27:30)
It might be anger. It might be gluttony. It might be lust. What sin are we hugging tight" and refusing to let go of and give to Christ? Why did we find it so hard to let go of these sins? What are the impacts of hugging these sins tight? How can we learn to loosen our grip and give them to Jesus?
In our culture of pervasive eroticism, the witness of virginity speaks louder than any homily on chastity or the meaning of the body. During this Mass, a young woman made a private vow of virginity in preparation for becoming a consecrated virgin.
In a culture (and a church) that seems to highly value extraversion, what role do introverts have to play? Comparing St. Peter to Our Lady, Fr. Sibley looks at the importance of introverts in the church and in evangelization.
It's important for us to resist the contemporary temptation to treat the Pope as more of a celebrity than a shepherd. Jesus founded the Church on the Rock of St. Peter, not Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Jesus appears to be a jerk to the Canaanite woman in today's gospel. Of course we know Jesus is not really being a jerk, but is trying to teach the apostles - and us - a lesson.
