Thank you for checking out the Living Off The Land podcast! We’re excited to get this project started, so here is a little overview of what this will be about. At its core, this podcast will examine the finer details of what makes The Land such a great place to live in. We’re going to look deeper than just the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cedar Point, and the casinos. Instead, we’ll be hitting up obscure places to eat and drink and talking to individuals who make Cleveland the city it is. The Land is in a growth spurt right now, and has been for the last several years. New restaurants, bars and activities pop up each month, and it can be overwhelming to keep up with it all. Additionally, all three of us are sports fans, so we give brief updates on the latest news with the Cavs, Browns and Indians. Tired of the guys on the radio? Tune into our sports segment to hear a fresh take. Another aspect of this podcast will be our event previews and community coverage. Cleveland is ripe with unique festivals and events, and we’ll be providing our listeners with updates on what’s coming up and our thoughts on the events we attend. Finally, we want to know what YOU want to hear. What parts of this city need more coverage? What restaurants or bars are you interested in us investigating? Do you know of a nonprofit that is making Cleveland a better place? Let us know. New episodes drop weekly. Stay tuned to the page!

After a two-week break, LOTL is back on the grind.
It was a fun and festive holiday season, full of good times with friends and family for all. But the LOTL boys all agree that it’s nice to be back in the “studio.” They were joined again by Stephen Stephano, who joins the show for the third time.
No beer of the week, but they had a “brew” of the week -- the “Black Pearl” (dark roast, Colombian Supremo beans) by Calico Jack Roasters, an Eastside Cleveland roastery. With dark, chocolate, carmel and fruity notes, it was highly recommended by LOTL.
With the college bowl season in full swing and the NFL playoffs around the corner, they started the episode discussing their top five favorite watch party foods. After that, they got into the poll of the week, which was very simple: are you a New Years resolution person or no?
The meat of the episode was centered around a season recap of the Browns, who generally surprised most with their resilience and competitiveness. Though they didn’t make the playoffs, a 7-8-1 record sure was nicer than an 0-16 one. But most of all, the LOTL guys marveled over Baker Mayfield, who has established himself as the Browns franchise quarterback -- three words no Cleveland fan ever thought they’d hear. They wrap up the Browns talk with a discussion of who should be the next Browns head coach.
They end the episode with some reviews: Jordan reviews the amazing weekly deals at Merry Arts Tavern in Lakewood, and then he also talks about three new beers that were announced by Great Lakes Brewery!
As always, follow us on social media at @thelotlpodcast (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
Ho ho ho! It’s the last LOTL episode for 2018, and we’re in full Christmas mode!
Episode 38 kicks off with a discussion of the top five WORST Christmas songs. We might ruffle some feathers or get some applause. Things get a bit heated when Jordan and Dan put a very popular song as their number one, and then things get heated again when Jordan puts one of Dan’s favorite Christmas songs on his list…
After that colorful conversation, LOTL chats about that huge Browns victory over the Denver Broncos, a team they haven’t beaten since 1990. Sure, it was a sloppy game, but Baker and company pulled themselves together and got that W. Speaking of the Browns, who will be their coach next year? Williams? Someone new? And is it still possible they can make the playoffs?
We wrap up sports with a discussion about what in the world the Indians are doing...they traded E.E. for Carlos Santana, got rid of Gomes, let Alonso walk, let Dr. Smooth walk to Houston, and now even Andrew Miller is in talks of being signed with the Cardinals...are the Dolans up to their usual shenanigans, or is this part of a master new plan?
The episode closes out with a preview of some fun and festive events to check out for Christmas. As always, follow us on social media at @thelotlpodcast (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).
It’s the holiday seasonnn and LOTL is full of Christmas cheer.
Jimmy was back in person, but unfortunately Jordan was not, so he skyped himself in. Dan was sipping on a really cool brew, Pimp My Sleigh by Fathead’s. It’s a strong Belgian-style Christmas Ale that will shiver your timbers if you have too many.
The episode started off with a chat about the poll of the week: do you want snow on Christmas, or no? Most people voted yes, but a few hipsters just had to say no of course. But it’s ok -- it’s Christmas.
Bouncing off of that topic, we picked our top five favorite Christmas cookies, from classics to fancy cookies that Dan’s mother makes. The boys also debate if Buckeyes are a cookie or a candy (Jordan thinks they’re a cookie apparently)...
They jump into sportstalk, starting with letting Jordan brag about his Texans victory over the Browns on Sunday. It was a frustrating game for Browns fans, but none of LOTL is too concerned over Baker’s poor performance. Bad games happen. They preview the Panthers game and wrap up with some brief talks about the Cavs and Indians latest trades.
The boys wrap it up with a few thoughts on the death of the 41st president, George H.W. Bush.
As always, follow us on social media at @thelotlpodcast (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
The boys are back!
Still full from their Thanksgiving dinners, Dan, Jordan and Jimmy (via Skype) kick things off with their top five worst Christmas gifts we’ve received. It’s a zany conversation that is full of bizarre and absurd gift ideas. Don’t try giving these at your next Christmas party.
After that, the boys hop into the poll of the week: was Baker justified or immature for the way he handled Hue Jackson after the game and the media criticism in the following days? Dan, Jordan and Jimmy all agree that he was justified, but they differ on why they think that. And LOTL got lots of feedback on their polls…
With the Browns facing the red-hot Houston Texans next week, LOTL previews the game which pitches two young quarterbacks and two tough defenses against each other. They make predictions and Dan and Jordan bet a six-pack of local beer on the outcome. After the Browns preview, Dan reviews what it was like to see LeBron again at the Q when he attended the Lakers-Cavs game on 11/21.
The episode wraps up with a preview of S’Morefest, which supports the upcoming local Cleveland music festival, Brite Winter Fest.
As always, thank you so much for listening, and don’t forget to follow us on social media at @thelotlpodcast (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).
It’s beginning to look at a lot like...Thanksgiving!
For episode 34, we centered our focus on Thanksgiving, starting off with our top five favorite Thanksgiving dinner dishes. After that tasty discussion, we jumped right into our Poll of the Week, where we asked our listeners if they prefer their turkey deep-fried or oven-roasted. We wrap up the turkey talk with a chat about what makes Thanksgiving special to us and what traditions mean the most to us.
After that, we talk about that impressive win the Browns had over the Falcons. Baker was impressive, and gave Cleveland a rally call of sorts when he described himself as “dangerous”. We chat about his impact on the team and how much more disciplined the Browns are now that Hue Jackson is gone.
We conclude the episode with a preview of several holiday-themed events, including Winterfest, The Cleveland Flea’s “Friendsgiving” event, and more.
As always, thank you for listening to our podcast! Please follow us on social media at @thelotlpodcast (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).
For our 33rd episode, we have a (temporary) change: we altered the “beer of the week” to “brew of the week”. What does that mean, exactly? Well, we don’t feature a beer; instead, we feature coffee. Give the episode a listen to learn which coffee shop we feature!
The Brew of the Week ties right into our first topic, which is our Top Five Cleveland coffee shops. Don’t worry -- there are no Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts on this list, Clevelanders and hipsters.
After that we discuss our poll of the week (did you vote in the 2018 midterm elections?). Dan and Jordan each give a few thoughts on voting and why they believe it’s important. There isn’t any ideological or party preferences, just mainly on the importance of voting.
Next up is sports, where we chat about the fallout from the firings of Hue Jackson and Todd Haley and how resilient and strong Baker Mayfield has been through it all. Despite all the chaos, Dan and Jordan see a silver lining behind it all. The Cavs, however, are a different story. While they seem a bit more promising, they are unable to close out close games. Kevin Love is out for a month. JR wants a trade. The list goes on, but at least we don’t have to worry about the Warriors anymore…
We conclude with a preview of some fun events coming to Cleveland this month.
As always, thank you for listening and please follow us on social media at @thelotlpodcast (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).
For our 32nd episode, we got a lot to unpack as far as Cleveland sports are concerned, so we calmed our nerves with the delicious Holiday Donut Cookie holiday ale from Platform Beer Co.
We began the episode with a season-appropriate discussion on when it’s ok to start listening to Christmas music. This chat was inspired by our LOTL Poll of the Week, where we asked y’all if you think it’s ok to listen to Christmas music the day after Halloween. We got interesting results…
After that we discuss our top five favorite TV shows of all time. The LOTL boys had some interesting favorites and some expected favorites, and they had trouble narrowing down just five, so honorable mentions made their way into the discussion.
Once we wrapped up the Poll of the Week and the Top Five, we got into the sad stuff, which includes the the firing of Hue Jackson and Ty Lue. LOTL dissects the firings, of which neither were surprising. However, Hue’s been running his mouth already, so Dan had some words to say about that. Also, the Cavs front office doesn’t seem to know what it’s doing, especially with JR’s latest revelation that he was told he wouldn’t be playing much. Now there are trade rumors, Kevin Love is out for a month with a foot injury, and well, it’s a mess.
On a more positive note, we review Great Lake’s First Pour of Christmas Ale event, and Dan reviews the new Wild Eagle Saloon in Brecksville.
We wrap up with reviews of a Dia de los Muertos parade in Gordon Square and a downtown holiday kick off extravaganza, Winterfest.
As always, thank you for listening to our podcast, and follow us on social media at @thelotlpodcast (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).

Wow, has it really been 30 episodes of Living Off The Land? Buckle up, this one is a long one (we’ve provided time points so you can listen to the segment you prefer).
We have two guests for Episode 30, Jon and David Foster, who are friends of Jordan’s. They come from Michigan (yes, they’re University of Michigan fans).
The guys start off with the weekly Top Five, which was our top five favorite sports jerseys of all time. Several iconic jerseys are mentioned, and the guys debate which ones are best. (9:05)
After that, they hop into a lengthy sports segment, which starts with a review of that now infamous UCF 229 fight between Khabib and McGregor. Was Khabib way out of line, or was he just echoing what McGregor had been stirring up previously in this rivalry? Then, what’s next for our local legend, Stipe Miocic? (28:57)
Next in sports, we dissect that brutal sweep of the Indians at the hands of the Astros. What went wrong? What needs to change? How much longer is the Indians playoff and title windows be open? We discuss these topics and more. (53:00)
We close out sports with a discussion about the Browns win over the Ravens and their upcoming game against the Chargers. (1:20:00)
The marathon episode ends with a preview of upcoming Cleveland events, including Mapleside Farm’s SpookyFest, Great Lakes Brewing Company’s First Pour, and an update on a new taqueria opening up at La Plaza Supermarket in Lakewood. (1:45:12)
As always, thank you so much for listening and follow us on social media at @thelotlpodcast (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).
Our 27th episode is recorded from Jordan’s 8th-floor, luxury apartment in North Olmsted! With a view of the gorgeous North Olmsted skyline, which features Great Northern Mall and Walmart, the boys started the episode off discussing the beer of the week, which was Sibling Revelry’s Ohio Native Festbier.
The first topic of the night, our Top Five, deals with heartbreaking sports memories. Jordan, who’s not a native Clevelander, focuses on Houston teams and Tottenham Hotspur, while Jimmy and Dan give their top five saddest Cleveland sports moments. Buckle down, folks — this one gets really depressing really quickly.
We then transition into the LOTL Poll of the Week, which has to do with the Browns: do you think the Brown’s look better or worse after the first two games? Around 80 percent of Facebook and Twitter followers said they feel better about the Brown’s situation after two weeks. After that, LOTL reviews the agonizing Browns’ loss to the Saints on Sunday, the disaster of Zane Gonzalez, the Josh Gordon trade, and then they preview the Browns – Jets game on Thursday night (9/20/18).

For our 26th episode, we debuted a new intro!
We jump right into a discussion about our poll of the week: which holiday movie do you prefer: scary, or Christmas? The boys go over the poll results and chat about which holiday movie they prefer. Then, we do our Top Five, which was our top five favorite holiday films. Dan and Jordan went with Christmas, and Jimmy went with halloween/scary movies.
After that, we preview several interesting events coming up soon in the CLE, including a local music festival in Cleveland Heights, the Eastside Cleveland Flea, the Ohio City Street Festival and IngenuityFest 2018.
We close out the episode discussing that crazy Brown’s game, which saw the Browns end their losing streak, but not break their winless streak. Dan, Jimmy and Jordan discuss the pros and cons of the Browns 2018 debut, and what they think will happen in week 2 against the Saints. The boys also discuss what Dan calls the “Jekyll and Hyde Tribe,” who seem to be fluctuating up and down. LOTL talks about the Josh Donaldson trade, the erratic bullpen, and which teams are the Tribe’s biggest threat.
As always, follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) at @thelotlpodcast.
Jimmy is back! Episode 23 gets off to a good start since our little bro is back, albeit via Skype.
We kick off this episode with previews, starting with the inaugural Incuya Music Fest, the 2018 Pierogi FEST, Cleveland’s Oktoberfest, and the Cleveland National Air Show. After that, we discuss our experiences at the Feast of the Assumption and Happy Dog’s zany 10th Birthday party.
Next up we delve into the LOTL Poll of the Week (do you prefer Summer or Fall?) and then we start discussing the hottest topic in Cleveland right now: The Browns. We review Episode 3 of Hard Knocks, touching on Dez Bryant’s visit, OF Line Coach Bob Wylie’s humor, Baker’s second NFL game, roster cuts and more. Following our Browns discussion, we get into the Tribe and their epic Boston series, which they split 2-2 with the Red Sox.
The episode ends with the crew discussing their top five wings in Cleveland, and lots of local sports bars get some shoutouts.
After a small break, we back!
From the original recording studio in Parma, OH, this episode is just Dan and Jordan as Jimmy was in Kent getting ready for college. This episode was focused around the Browns and their first appearance on HBO’s Hard Knocks. We discuss the major talking points in the episode, including Jarvis Landry’s epic speech, Baker’s first impression on camera, and the way the team rallied and united around coach Hue Jackson during the death of his mother.
We wrap up sports talking the Tribe. Should Ramirez AND Lindor be MVP front-runners? How about those two thrilling walk-off wins on 8/7 and 8/8? What are the concerns for the squad heading into the final regular season stretch?
Outside of sports, we spend some time discussing our new website and our new weekly blogs, the Hangout of the Week, the Picture of the Week, and the LOTL Sports Take. We also talk our Poll of the Week and our LOTL Top Five festivals.
Don’t forget to check out some of the awesome events this weekend! The famous Feast of the Assumption takes place in Little Italy from Aug. 15-18. More details here. Also that same weekend is the Burning River Fest (Aug. 17-18), which features live music, food, drinks and more. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here.

Episode 20 comes to you from Bad Tom Smith Brewing at another one of Cruise and Brews Cleveland’s Nights Out. We had a great time with our friends trying out Bad Tom’s brews and eating Ohio City Burrito and Pizza Whirl, who provided the food.
The episode kicks off with an interview with guest Garth Moore of Bad Tom Smith. Garth talked about who the brewery’s namesake was (yes, he’s a real dude, and yes, he was bad) and why they expanded from Cincinnati to Ohio City. He also discusses their “Brewers Shoot-Out” program, which is a monthly competition for home brewers, as well as other interesting details.
Next, our good friend, Hannah Uveges stopped by to chat about her work’s project in partnership with The City Mission called New Horizons! Hannah gives us an update on how they did with their fundraising as well as how the progress of the house is going. We also get into our normal rhythm of talking CLE sports as well as our #LOTL Poll Of The Week. Also new this week, we debut a new segment, #LOTL Top Five Of The Week; this week we talked about our top five favorite beer styles.
Also check us out on our new social media handles: Facebook, Twitter & Instagram are now all at @thelotlpodcast. For more information on how to help volunteer for the New Horizon’s home, email Hannah at huveges@gmail.com.
In our first remote recording, we ventured out to Hofbrauhaus Cleveland to talk to minority owner Axel Hoyer and manager Mitch Campbell. We discuss why Axel got involved with Hofbrauhaus and what his vision is behind his newest venture, Cruise and Brews Cleveland, which he describes as a “dot-connector”. What does that mean? Listen to the episode to find out!
The LOTL gang also talks with Axel and Mitch about the Tribe, the state of the Cavs post-LeBron, and a little bit about Cleveland’s recent revival.
We wrap up the episode with a quick review of the Taste of Tremont!
Check out Cruise and Brews Cleveland:

It’s episode 18, and the first with our three-man crew of Jordan, Dan, and Jimmy.
After dropping the usual intros with our social media hashtags, we hop into our new segment: the poll of the week! Our topic this week: besides the Cavs, which Cleveland team would you prefer to see win a title next? We got lots of feedback, and the results surprised Dan. We ease right into Indians talk after this, where we discuss their five all-stars, J-Ram’s insane home run year, and Dan’s experience at the 19-run crushing of the Reds.
Up next, we talk a little bit about the future of the Cavs, who are for the first time in four years are not Eastern Conference favorites. So what’s next? Build around Kevin Love and Collin Sexton? Is Cedi the future? Burn it all down and go for draft picks? Tune in to hear our thoughts.
Now that Jimmy is a full-time co-host, we finally have a voice for UFC coverage. And since Cleveland has arguably the greatest heavyweight UFC fighter of all time, Stipe Miocic, we had a lot to talk about after his crushing loss to Daniel Cormier.
We only had one review this week: El Arezpo y Pupuseria, a Colombian and Salvadoran restaurant in Fairview Park. Quick review: definitely worth a trip.
LOTL wraps up with preview of the best places to see the World Cup final as well as a preview of a huge food festival: Taste of Tremont!
It’s the sweet sixteen episode of Living Off THE LAND!
So let’s cut to the chase -- this episode is bittersweet. We have some really excited news, and some sad news. The good news is we will have a website with written content very soon. Jordan is working this weekend with our friend Mike on setting that up. We’ll also soon have business cards to distribute...more on that soon.
Now for the sad news: our food expert and chef member, Paul, will be leaving the podcast after this episode. There is no bad beef or hard feelings; this is simply a decision Paul made in response to some other projects he’s working on in his life. We’ll all certainly miss him, but he also expects to be a guest in future episodes.
After these announcements, we hop into the never-ending spiral that is the LeBron free agency talk. So many things come into play to determine where he goes: What happens with Kawhii? Are the Cavs’ still in on Kemba? Is there any possibility for Boogie Cousins? Collin Sexton’s role...the list goes on and on. We try to make sense of the chaos and we make our predictions if he’s staying or going.
Once the dust from the LeBron talk settles, we move onto the Tribe, who are heating up after a 7-game win streak. Kipnis is hot again, we got Beiber fever, and how about J-Ram? Could he be an AL MVP candidate?
Next up is our restaurant and bar reviews. We tackle the ever-growing Market Garden Brewery in Ohio City, with it’s awesome Cleveland Guardian’s logo and their delicious brews. Do they have one of the best beers of all time? Check in to find out. Next we briefly discuss an upscale joint in Lakewood that has a 5-star patio. But is it worth your time? For pizza, Dan gives us the scoop on Fat Bob’s Pizza -- which just might have one of the better crusts in The Land.
We wrap things up with event previews of World Cup watch parties at Old Angle Tavern, a free Jazz Festival (http://www.tri-c.edu/jazzfest/index.html), Fairview Park Summerfest (https://fairviewsummerfest.com/) and a roundup of the best Independence Day firework shows.
Welcome back to LOTL! It’s episode 15!
LOTL kicks things off with another conversation about LeBron’s future. Where will he go? Is he going? Most people seem to agree it’s LA or CLE, so how does Kawhi’s announcement that he wants to be traded to LA play in this? We also discuss the NBA draft and who the Cavs should pick up...or trade...
Then LOTL moves onto the Tribe, who have been heating up more and more each week. Dan also reviews a game he attended recently.
Once the dust from the sportstalk settles, we move on to reviews. Could it be that the best patio in Cleveland is located at Forest City Brewery? Jordan will give you his two cents on that. The boys then review Nunzios, a classic Cleveland pizzeria. Finally, Jordan reviews a swanky marketplace in Gordon Square…and he might have some controversial opinions on it.
Finally, LOTL updates y’all on the latest activities and events, which includes The Cleveland Pizza Fest, Strongsville Rib Burn-Off, Taste of Tremont and some updates on fireworks shows.
As always, thank you for listening!
We’re back! We have some tasty reviews, hot sports takes and debate as well as heated discussion about Barrio Tacos!
We begin by reviewing Bottlehouse Brewery, a unique brewery that specializes in barrel-aged brews and mead. We follow that with a review of Paisano’s Pizza in Parma Heights. How does it stack up to the favorite pizzas of the LOTL cast? Finally, Paul makes everyone’s mouths water with a detailed preview of Boca Loca Burrito Factory in Berea.
Sportstalk begins with a bang with a rowdy debate about LeBron’s free agency. Will he stay or will he goooo? Dan is convinced he’s headed towards LA. Jordan, not so much. Everyone agrees that no one actually knows except for the man himself, but it’s such an addictive topic to discuss.
We wrap up with some event coverage, including a SCENE Magazine Best of Cleveland party on June 21st!
The weather is wonderful and the weekend is finally here, so get things started by listening to the 13th episode of Living Off The Land!
The boys begin with an unexpected debate: are Girl Scout cookies good? To Dan and Jordan, this was an absurd discussion, but Paul has some choice criticism regarding the tasty treats. Triggers everywhere! Don’t forget to vote on this question on our Facebook and Twitter accounts!
Our hearts were still heavy from that frustrating Cavs loss in game three the night before, but we still mustered some strength to discuss the situation. Spoiler alert: we’re not too positive, but hopefully the Wine and Gold prove us wrong and pull off a miracle.
We moved onto reviews next, where we review Terrestrial Brewing Company, a beautiful brewery in Cleveland’s Battery Park neighborhood. It’s got good beer, amazing vibes, and a gorgeous view of the lake. You’ll wanna check out this review. To satisfy your hunger, Dan and Paul review a pizza place in Rocky River called The Mellow Mushroom. How does this place stack up to other famous CLE pizzerias? Last but not least, Paul tells us of a 1950s-style burger joint, Bearden’s, which is in Rocky River. Could this place have the best fast-food burger in the Land?
We wrap the episode up with some reviews of Rocky River Park, the Crocker Park farmers market, a rundown of all the best bars to watch the World Cup in Cleveland, and information on the upcoming US Women’s National Team visit at FirstEnergy Stadium (June 12th).
Don’t forget: this Sunday (June 10th) is the Taste of Lakewood at Madison Park, from 1-4PM: https://tasteoflakewood.com/.
Episode #12 of LivingOffTHELAND is jam packed and full of goodies about our fair city.
We start off this episode by talking about what we did in the city for the Memorial Day weekend. Paul played volleyball, Jordan went to a couple Indians games vs. his hometown Astros and Dan went to Edgewater Beach along with hosting two watch parties for Cavs playoff games.
Next, the guys debut a recap segment dedicated to their rec league basketball team. Team #LOTL is 1-0 after an 87-57 victory over the Golden Gobblers...yes...that’s their name…
We get into our review section this week once again talking about a pizza place, a brewery and a cool patio spot. First, we talk about this awesome, new, authentic neapolitan style pizza with a wood fired oven called Harlow’s in Lakewood. They have five pizzas on the menu and that’s it and it’s amazing. Next we get into one of our favorite breweries that also has one of our favorite patios and that would be Nano Brew. We finish up the review section talking about a BBQ spot that Paul tried called Woodstock BBQ that also has a cool patio area.
After we get done reviewing these food & drink spots we transition into talking about events going on in and around the city coming up! Jordan previews events such as the Hessler Street Fair in University Circle. It is a 1960’s type street fair with food, games & music. Next, we have Laurel Live which features some really cool musical artists and some you probably have heard of like Foster The People and Fitz and The Tantrums. Lastly, we preview the Taste of Lakewood that is coming up which will feature food from 25+ Lakewood spots as well as music and fun.
We also preview some activities coming up. We list Cavs Watch Parties for the NBA Finals at The Q, As well as a benefit concert featuring a band that has Paul’s friend as a member at a cool deli spot in Canton, OH and lastly, show favorite, Brewnuts is celebrating National Donut Day so check that out!
Transitioning into some CLE sports talk we recap that Cavs thrilling ECF victory in Game 7 over the Boston Celtics and debate on whether getting this Cavs team to the NBA Finals is his biggest achievement ever as a player. We also start to preview meeting in the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors for a 4th consecutive time and give our memories of the past three series and our predictions for this 4th installment. We also talk about the Indians series on Memorial Day Weekend with the defending World Champs, the Houston Astros. Jordan went to two games in the series so he talks about the atmosphere and the guys talk about the Indians heating up and how this could be a playoff matchup.
It’s the 11th episode! Whoo!
(10:25) We start the episode off with a linguistic debate: how do you pronounce “milk?” Apparently some people pronounce it “melk”...hmmm…
(17:00) Once the dust settles from that, we hop right into Tribe talk. It’s been a while since we talked about the Indians, so we assess the first quarter of the season and discuss the upcoming series against the Astros (rumor has it one of the LOTL members is a Houston fan).
(31:20)We then transition into the Cavs, who now face elimination in the Eastern Conference Finals against Boston. What needs to change for them? Does LeBron have any tricks up his sleeve? What is going on with Tyron Lue’s coaching decisions?
(46:15) Next up, reviews! We debut a new review format: for the time being, we’ll be covering a pizza joint, a brewery, and any place with an outdoor patio. In this episode we review Il Rione, a pizzeria in Gordon Square, Platform Brewery (Ohio City), and Prosperity Social Club in Tremont (it’s got a patio!).
(1:22:00) We wrap up with previews of weekend festivals. Up this week: Greek Festival (Tremont; May 25-28) http://www.tremontgreekfest.com/, Berea’s National Rib Cook Off (Berea; May 25-28): http://berearib.com/, and Catch Meaning Festival (Rock & Roll HOF; May 27) https://www.rockhall.com/catchmeaning18.
Updated with segment times
It’s the tenth episode of Living Off THE LAND!
So why not begin with a debate over donuts? Well, to be specific, Paul got his feathers ruffled when he heard Jordan won’t even bother to check the brand of donuts if there are free donuts at work. Free is free, says Jordan, but Paul says you need to at least know what you’re eating.
(10:47) The boys smoothly transitioned into a review of a Brewnuts collab with Bad Tom Smith Brewery, a new taproom in Ohio City (Cincinnati-based). The collab featured four delicious mini-donuts paired with a four-beer flight of Bad Tom Smith Brewery.
(18:45) After that, LOTL reviews some new places to eat and drink (note: every place we reviewed was in Ohio City this week). We finally made it out to Saucy Brew Works. It’s possible the pizza was really good and the brewskis even better. (29:10) Paul discusses a semi-formal dining option in Ohio City -- The Plum -- and explains why he appreciate places like this. (45:43) Finally, Paul delves into a new sandwich shop, Larder Delicatessen, which he says boasts incredible sandwiches and dessert options -- all made from scratch.
(57:28) We review some upcoming events: Cleveland Asian Festival (May 19-20): http://clevelandasianfestival.org/2018/; Berea’s National Rib Cook Off (May 25-28): http://berearib.com/; and SCENE’s Taste of Summer 2018 (May 25-27): http://scenetasteofsummer.com/.
(1:01:05) We wrap up the episode talking about Cleveland’s favorite water cooler discussion: CLE sports. After two disappointing losses to the injury-ravaged Celtics, LOTL discusses what’s going wrong with the Cavs and what is going well for the Celtics. We make updated series predictions for the series, and not all of LOTL thinks they’re gonna make the finals. On a more upbeat note, the Browns are going to be on HBO’s Hard Knocks! That’s fun!
Dan and Jordan try their best to trigger Paul by discussing Star Wars Episodes 7 and 8. Paul valiantly deflects most of the triggers, and the LOTL boys are soon back on track to discuss the Cavs, who just finished a demoralizing sweep of the 1st-seeded Toronto Raptors. Demoralizing if you’re Drake, that is. Jokes aside, the Cavs are facing a revitalized Celtics team on their path to make a fourth straight Finals appearance. The boys talk Kevin Love, the key bench players, and their series predictions.
After sportstalk, LOTL jumps right into a review of a newish Italian restaurant -- Molto Bene (on Detroit Ave. in Lakewood). How does this place compare to other Cleveland Italian joints? What does our Italian member, Dan, think? Is it possible this place might have the best gelato in town? Listen to the episode to find out!
Paul runs down a new Mexican place -- Tapatias Taqueria -- which he declares rivals La Plaza. Finally, LOTL reviews several fun week night events coming up next week (one of them might include donuts and beer) as well as some upcoming summer events!
Episode 8 starts off with a review of The Boomshakalaka’s show at the Happy Dog this past Sunday night. The boys enjoyed a nice evening of rock n’ roll, delicious hot dogs, tater tots, and...burgers? Apparently there are burgers at the Happy Dog.
Next up, a review of one of the few Colombian restaurants in the city: Barroco. Paul delves into his experience there and gives his two cents on the food and the vibes and how it stacks up to other Hispanic restaurants in Cleveland. Barroco’s review is followed up by a heated discussion on gas station food, which is sparked by Paul’s review of Angelo’s Amazing Chicken (a fried chicken joint in a Sunoco Gas Station in Old Brooklyn).
We wrap up the culture section talking about The Holden Arboretum, our favorite ice cream stands, and our favorite Mexican restaurants with Cinco de Mayo just around the corner.
Finally, sportstalk, which begins with a brief summary of the recent Browns’ draft picks after we’ve had time to think it over. Finally, we talk Cavs and our thoughts of that crazy first game in Toronto, and our predictions for the Wine and Gold for the rest of the playoffs.
Our culture episode kicks off with a preview of an amazing concert deal from Live Nation. It may or may not have to do with a $20 concert special…
Paul then dives into his review of his first experience at the Cleveland Flea, and then we’re back into the restaurant reviews. Up this week are La Plaza, Cleveland Bagel, Noble Brewing Company, Fathead’s Brewery, and several Akron-based food trucks that made their way up to Cleveland this past week.
Oh, and just in case you were wondering -- we get Paul on a rant about a kitchen-related topic… and things get a little heated again.
It’s Cleveland’s favorite time of the year! The NFL Draft! This episode was recorded live during the first four picks of the draft, so you’ll get some pre-draft analysis, live reactions, and post-draft analysis of the Brown’s latest teammates -- Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward.
This has been a slightly controversial pick for a lot of Browns fans. Our polls we ran last night on Twitter and Facebook show most of our listeners aren’t too happy with this picks. Dan is thrilled about Mayfield, while Paul is optimistic, but surprised. What do they think about Ward, possibly the biggest surprise of the night? You’ll have to listen to Episode 6 to find out!
The boys from The Land kickoff episode four with a rowdy discussion on spreading peanut butter on burgers and hot dogs. Is this gross, or is it actually a genius concept?
After that debate cools down, we get into several reviews. Paul reviews two new BBQ places he visited last week. Let’s just say one of those places is a very unique type of BBQ restaurant. Masthead Brewing gets a shoutout, and with Pizza 216 FINALLY back in business, Dan and Paul compare and contrast how it tastes now versus before they shut down for repairs.
Next up are reviews of Cleveland’s Dyngus Day and the Justin Timberlake concert at the Q. Jimmy gets in on the JT discussion as well.
Stay tuned till the end -- we discuss some upcoming guests who will be featured soon!
