It's special guest time again.  We diverge from nutrition and healthy eating and shift our focus on National Mental Health Awareness month with Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) Rudy Tafoya, Lead School Clinical Coordinator of the Behavioral Health Program on the Pueblo of San Felipe.

Covid has put everyone under a great deal of stress and has created anxiety in people who either weren't experiencing anxiety in the past or who were already dealing with it. Seeking someone to help you sort of the important things from those that aren't as  important and how to prioritize the list to help you tackle that list is a step in the right direction. Asking for help is a sign of strength not weakness.

Please give a listen to learn more how you can help yourself or perhaps a friend or family member feeling overwhelmed, by anything!

Dieticians don't always forbid you from eating things that taste good. Today's episode Lisa, our resident Dietician and Nutritionist, will talk about desserts and how you can manage to keep them in your diet. Sometimes we eat our dinner just so we can have dessert. As Pink Floyd says on "The Wall" album "How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?" We agree!

Listen in as TR&L discuss modifying dessert recipes to reduce sugar in the recipe and keep it tasting sweet and delectable. Cooking and baking with sugar substitutes, cutting the fat content in baked goods and still get a moist baked good. Lastly, learn about N'ice Cream and Yogurt Bark.

This week we take a side road from our usual therapeutic conversation road trip to discuss how the program we run is funded. Please take a listen to learn how we pay the bills...all the bills!

TRL will talk about the Special Diabetes Program and its sister program, the Special Diabetes Program for Indians, operated by the Indian Health Service and funded through mandatory Congressional budget approvals.

The SDP/I has been around since President Bill Clinton signed it into existence in 1997 during the 105th Congress. The biggest change occurred in 2004. Since then it has been pretty static despite the increases in costs to operate an effective program and best serve our populations. The 116th Congress, in 2020 did vote to increase the re-funding process to three years from 2, although the sponsoring legislators requested 5 years and they voted against an increase in funding to $200M from the 2004 amount of $150M.

Please take a few minutes to contact your elected Senators and House of Representatives to ask them to support the SDP/I funding, increase in period and an increase in the amount they will fund each year. You can find your elected officials contact information here: Find Your Representative or your Senator: Find Your Senator

If you are in New Mexico the following folks are your elected officials: Senators: Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujuan; Representatives: Deb Haaland (District 1), Yvette Herrell (District 2), Teresa Leger Fernandez (District 3).
