Even as we know that this life is hard, parents dread the suffering of their children. In this episode of the Rooted Parent Podcast, Tish Harrison Warren joins Cameron and Anna to talk about preparing our kids to suffer and how to help them when they are grieving.
Tish Harrison Warren expands on thoughts from her most recent book Prayer in the Night: For Those Who Work, or Watch, or Weep, especially the prayer of parents who long for God to “shield the joyous” and protect their kids in their suffering.
Warren is also the author of Christianity Today’s 2018 book of the year Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life. An Anglican priest, wife. and mother of three, Warren writes a weekly newsletter for The New York Times.
The teenagers we serve will undoubtedly experience all varieties of let-downs and disappointments. How can we offer a message of hope? Robert Row, the student ministries coordinator of seeJesus, joins this episode of The Rooted Youth Ministry Podcast to discuss this very topic. Robert shares how the arc of Jesus’ own story included “being emptied,” “taking on the form of a servant,” “being found in human form,” and “becoming obedient to the point of death” (see Philippians 2:7-8); only after this “low point of the J-Curve” was Jesus exalted through the resurrection (see Philippians 2:9). Robert then shares how THE Easter story connects to the stories of our students – how, for every “little death” our students may face, there is the promise of a “little Easter.” This Holy Week – be encouraged by this episode of The Rooted Youth Ministry Podcast.

FOMO may be a cute new acronym for the fear of missing out, but this fear found its way into the Genesis narrative of the fall of man. By popular request, Cameron and Anna address FOMO and the modern teenager. Certainly social media has inflamed this particular fear, but it’s always been hard to watch our children get left out. Why do we, as parents, go to such great lengths, and even go against what we know is right before God, in order to see our children included? How can we stand strong when they are hurt, and how do we help them feel the love of God when they are home alone on the weekend?

One of Rooted’s Five Pillars is relational discipleship. Drawing upon his experiences as the Area Director of Urban Young Life in Birmingham, Sedrick speaks about his own experiences as an unsaved teenager, his conversion to Christianity in the context of relational discipleship in college, how he and his team develop relationships with a diverse mix of students, and how he ultimately evangelizes and disciples teens towards lifelong faith in Jesus Christ. This episode features Russell Moore’s plenary at Rooted 2021 entitled, “Fatherhood and the Reliableness of God.” Russell Moore looks at the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6: 9-13 and what it means to have God as our Abba and Jesus as our Savior. In the eyes of our all-knowing and ever-present God we are blameless before our King because we are IN Christ Jesus. This is not something we earn, but a gift of grace from the Father. Our relationship and dependence on Him and His grace impacts how we share the gospel with those around us.

In this episode of the Rooted Parent podcast, Cameron and Anna talk about a fear that might be tricky for some of us to identify: the fear of becoming like our parents.
Episode Notes
Oftentimes adults will look back on the way they were raised with a critical eye, telling themselves “I would never relate to my kids the way my mom or dad related to me”—but we can fall into the trap of calling that wisdom, rather than recognizing the fear (and self-righteousness) that lurks under that perspective. Certainly our relationships with our parents can be very complicated and we can learn from their mistakes, but we will make mistakes of our own if we allow ourselves to be driven by fear instead of led by the Holy Spirit. In this episode Cameron and Anna discuss ways to recognize when we are parenting in reaction to our own upbringing, and how to respond to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we disciple our own families.

In this episode Cameron and Anna discuss the ways in which our fears for our kids harm our kids, but there is hope to be found taking refuge in the fear of the Lord. In the words of Tim Keller, fear of the Lord doesn’t mean being afraid of him. Rather, fear of the Lord is “sustaining a joyful astonished awe and wonder before him.” With this in mind, Cameron and Anna discuss practical ways to sustain that awe, such that fearing the Lord means “we don’t have to fear anything else.” Such freedom we find when we keep our “eyes on the prize” that is Jesus!

Every parent knows that this world holds real dangers for our children, and those dangers seem to multiply as kids get older. Many threats are legitimate, and we are right to cry out to God in our fears for our kids. Other apparent threats spring from the idols of our hearts; these fears bring us to repentance and trust in God’s sovereign plan for our kids. God’s word equips us to respond to our fear out of faith.

In Episode Two of the Fear Factor, Cameron and Anna discuss the fear of judgment. Parents often worry that they are being judged for their mistakes — and their children’s mistakes — by their communities, their own families, and other parents. This can lead to poor decision making, when we parent our children out of the fear of what other people will think rather than parenting out of what God will think. And this is fearful, too– how do we know God is not judging us harshly for the mistakes we make as moms and dads? The gospel reminds us that the judgment we deserve has been satisfied by Christ, and the gospel frees us from serving the idol of human approval.
1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
Isaiah 51:7 “Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear not the reproach of man, nor be dismayed by their reviling.”

Welcome to Season Four of the Rooted Parent Podcast! In this first episode of the new season, Cameron and Anna talk about the fears parents face in raising their children during this modern age. Teenagers aren’t the only ones experiencing heightened anxiety; their parents are too, and when parents and children feed off of each other’s fears, the cycle is destructive and difficult to break. Thanks be to God, the gospel shows us a better way. Starting with the fall in Genesis3, Cameron and Anna talk about how fear causes us to either control our children, or withdraw in despair. But Jesus leads us into holy fear and reverent trust, so that we can begin to parent our kids out of love and wisdom rather than worry and fear.

Many church planters and solo pastors have a desire to minister to the teenagers in their churches – but they don’t have the staffing or the resources to do so in the same ways as larger churches. Such is the burden of Creston Thomas, a bi-vocational pastor of Christ the Redeemer Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Creston stopped by Rooted’s booth at The Gospel Coalition’s 2021 National Conference, and he asked how a ministry such as Rooted might equip a church like Christ the Redeemer Church to serve the teenagers. Host Davis Lacey, a church planter himself, spoke with Creston about ways to serve teenagers without a traditional “youth group,” as well as resources Rooted offers which would also be beneficial.

The teenagers in our youth ministries aren’t married. Many of them don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend. As they lead these lives of singleness, they are bombarded by cultural and societal messaging which essentially communicates that, unless one is romantically and sexually fulfilled, he or she is somehow “missing out. “As a single man in his 40s, Sam Allberry knows these realities firsthand. Yet in this podcast (which draws upon his book, 7 Myths About Singleness), he communicates a better word of gospel hope to the single teenagers in our youth ministries. We hope that this episode of The Rooted Youth Ministry Podcast will equip and empower you to better understand the biblical teaching on human relationships/sexuality, and to teach those doctrines to the teenagers you serve.
Episode Notes:

Join host Davis Lacey for a deep-dive conversation with Arek O’Connell, High School and Young Adult Youth Pastor at Hillside Community Church (Grand Rapids, MI). In this episode of the Rooted Parent podcast, Cameron and Anna discuss the gospel attitude of compassion. Understanding the gospel leads us to be grateful to God, humble with regard to ourselves, and compassionate in our responses to other people. The word “compassion,” which means to “suffer with,” defines the heart of Jesus towards sinners (see Phil 2:1-8). Cameron and Anna talk about teaching teens to “suffer with” others. The danger of compassion fatigue in our social-media saturated world makes it a challenge for teenagers to keep their hearts open, but Jesus offers real hope in the midst of trials and suffering.

The show was surprisingly helpful to set the stage for healthy conversations about what grief is and how Christ gives us hope in the midst of deep loss. Whose predictions about the series were closest, what did we think about the MCU’s debut of a new type of show, and what can youth workers learn from the series’ depiction of grief?

In today’s culture, we are quick to characterize others who have a different political view, ideology, or worldview as “enemies.” And often teens see siblings, coaches, teachers, and even parents as enemies simply because they don’t see eye-to-eye. As Christians, we are called to love our enemies, whether they are truly opposed to us or not. What does that mean? What are some practical steps we can take as parents to teach our teenagers to love their enemies? Anna Meade Harris and Cameron Cole dive into scripture to answer those questions.

Are students in your ministry merely hearing the Bible taught to them, or are they actively learning how to study it themselves? Teaching students how to study and apply the Bible is a primary part of our calling as youth ministers, but it’s one we can all too easily neglect! Using the basics of Inductive Bible Study, this workshop will demonstrate how to help students slow down to observe, interpret, and apply the text, making gospel connections as they go. The goal of this workshop from the Rooted 2020 Conference is to provide recommendations for implementing this kind of collaborative Bible study with both high school and middle school students.

Even before the pandemic hit, researches were claiming our culture is experiencing and epidemic of loneliness. Changes in the structure of the family, greater mobility and transience, and the rise of social media have left millions feeling less deeply-connected. Add to this the realities of quarantining and social distancing, and loneliness has become one of the major mental, emotional, and even physical health challenges of our present age. David Zahl unpacks the differences in the law and the gospel, especially in student ministry, including several stories of grace you can use to remember God’s grace and encourage your youth group.
There is perhaps no time in life more marked by the interplay between rebellion and conformity than adolescence. Some of us spend those years vying for the approval of parents, teachers, college admissions offices, while others run in the opposite direction, looking to upset whatever apple cart we find burdensome. Ministers of the gospel can find themselves in an awkward position, eager to help their students avoid legalistic burnout but anxious not to dampen their zeal or diminish the very real consequences of sin. In this session we’ll be exploring how the distinction between the Law and the Gospel – one of the primary themes of the Protestant Reformation – might serve as a resource as we negotiate this crucible of teenage life and faith.

Whether debating the efficacy of face-coverings to fight a global pandemic, thinking critically about important political issues, or simply asking the age-old question of, “How far is too far?”, the concept of freedom is one that is constantly on the mind of teenagers. In this episode of The Rooted Youth Ministry Podcast, Josh Wester of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) distinguishes between authentic Christian freedom and freedom as defined by the world. Apart from Christ, freedom is defined by asking the question, “How can I please myself?” On the other hand, the Christian defines freedom as the ability to live a life that honors the Lord and loves other people well. In addition to constructing a theology of Christian freedom, Josh delivers down-to-earth advice on how youth workers and parents can help teenagers think through and implement these doctrines at an early age. In light of our cultural moment, we pray that you’ll be equipped and encouraged by this timely episode of The Rooted Youth Ministry Podcast.

He defines four emotional Milestones and how to help boys develop them:

As summer kicks off, many teenagers will experience heightened pressure surrounding body image, leading to disordered eating for some. Thankfully, the gospel provides good news for bodies: They are created by God for good, redeemed by the Incarnation of Jesus, and awaiting a resurrection like his. In this series, Rooted writers discuss how we can help students navigate identity struggles in light of this gospel of grace.
Licensed professional counselor Alice Churnock recorded this podcast episode immediately after National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. This episode of Ask Alice combines Biblical wisdom with practical help for families who are spending A LOT of time together. Alice likens families to ecosystems; when every part is healthy, the whole system thrives. But we live in a fallen world, and that means sibling squabbles and strife are inevitable, starting in Genesis 4.
Alice takes questions from parents, discussing what parents need to know about sibling relationships. She draws on family systems therapy to demonstrate the roles our kids come to play in families (the Hero, the Scapegoat, the Mascot, to name a few), and discusses the impact of birth order as well. She also gives concrete advice about how parents can help their children value and appreciate each other while they are still in the home together.

One of the great challenges for ministers today is being faithful to the gospel while at the same time communicating that gospel in ways that are relevant and understandable to your hearers. This is the challenge of contextualization: presenting the biblical gospel to people in language they understand and through appeals and arguments that land with them in force. After briefly exploring what contextualization is (and is not!) and why it matters, this workshop from our 2018 conference in Nashville presents practical guidance for how to contextualize biblical truth for your ministry context.

Faithful exegesis is an essential part of Christian discipleship. In order to faithfully teach God’s word, the scriptures must be studied and interpreted in the context where they stand. And for our people, understanding context drives how we understand the text. History is the context of our culture. Without understanding history, we cannot properly exegete culture. This breakout from our 2018 conference in Nashville looks at key themes throughout history that can aid us in discipleship of students and how they engage the culture around them.

Tim Keller, in a recent gathering of planters, shared that there was a moment in his ministry when he realized that prayer was a necessity. He said when something is a necessity, you will find time for it. Let’s be honest. For many of us, prayer is something we do in public, but lack in private. We may lead prayer meetings, but our own house is far from being a house of prayer. By studying Luke 11:1-13, Choi explores what the disciples learned when they asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray.”

For years, churches and families have ministered to kids through moralism and exhortation. We tend to minister to kids through a theology of glory. Martin Luther critiqued the theology of glory in launching the Protestant Reformation and articulated the theology of the cross. This workshop from Rooted’s 2017 conference in Dallas shows how these different approaches influence our spiritual leadership of kids. Cameron talks about how the Cross changes the way we relate to and lead kids. He offers specifics on how a theology of the cross changes our teaching, how we pastor to our students in suffering, and how we disciple them.
