Today's episode is a Family Cookbook episode that I've wanted to make for quite a while. It features two of my favorite foods from the area where I went to college (and where MANY of my ancestors lived for over a century) - Deep Fried Biscuits and Homemade Apple Butter, from Indiana. See the shownotes for the recipes.
The part of the apple butter recipe that fascinates me is that my mother's mother would have gone through all of the boiling and sealing of jars as a child and teenager, basically the whole canning process, and by the time she died she was using a microwave. We're never that far from history and continual evolution, even in the kitchen.

Here's another biography I developed on my quest to achieve one biography per day on my platform of choice, FamilySearch. With each ancestor, I always start with the auto-generated Life Story on Ancestry, copy it and paste it in the LifeStory field on FamilySearch. Then, I augment it with facts from census, vital, and other records, along with a little logical deduction thrown in for good measure. As I did before, I will read you the original from Ancestry and the final product on FamilySearch, complete with a list of sources. I hope that this inspires you to write a few biographies every month. It's the best way to come to understand the lives of our ancestors.

Have you ever set a goal or {shudder} made a New Year's Resolution, and then not kept it? Yeah, you're allowed to look at me and point on that one. I am a terrible offender. But this year, I don't have a goal, or a resolution, I just have a hashtag. A THING, if you will. And that thing is - #BioADay2022. I am working hard to write a bio, little or big, for an ancestor, every day, for the year. And if I don't make one per day, no big deal - I'll just keep on trying.
The podcast helps hold me accountable (as does guilt, lots of guilt), and I'm sharing one of my bios with you today. It's for Calvin Walker, my 3rd great-grandfather. He didn't save children from burning buildings or anything, but he lived a life that, like all lives, deserves to be remembered. I hope you enjoy his story, and the tale of how I assembled it. If I meet my goal, you'll see how important it is to document our ancestors, and you'll feel inspired to do so yourself.

2021 is definitely in the running for my least favorite year EVER! It has given me reason to reexamine what I'm doing, however, both with the podcast and with my own work. Join me for a list of thank-you's, and for an introduction of the quickest, easiest solution I've found so far to distractions, brick walls, and the genealogy blues - #BioADay2022. Let's join together to hold one another accountable as we actively learn more about our ancestors by generating and augmenting short (as in, 2-minute) biographies for ancestors using Ancestry with FamilySearch and WikiTree. 2022 is not going to start off as an easy year, but we can help one another through it together and get higher-quality research out of it as a squadron than we might flying solo. At long last, a proper Zoom class! I'm holding my first class on September 5, 2021 at 3pm ET - cleaning trees in Ancestry, and the basics of FamilySearch, in order to get moving on transferring reparational trees (for those who want this service). If you attend, you'll learn a lot of basics FOR FREE. If you're LDS, we need you all the more - only LDS Church members have the capacity to transfer trees, and there are people who really would like to utilize this service. Finally, part two of my January 2021 interview with Michael Twitty, in which we talk much more about food than we did in the first half. We start by discussing how genealogy is a part of becoming whole, which enables us to be of service in this world. Then, we talk about how food isn't just food. There are revelations about fufu. Michael makes all kinds of links between foods from the African continent and Southern cuisine, and even finds the origins of dance movements in cooking and war. He discusses the difference between Whiteness and European-ness, something that is not discussed enough, and how moving beyond trauma begins with honesty. We also discuss a few aspects of racism in necessary archives, with Michael conveying a personal experience he had.
For foodies, there's a lot here. For genealogists, there's a lot here, too, because food is an integral part of genealogy. I hope you'll listen to this episode (and episode 402 first, if you haven't yet), to learn a bit about how Michael is writing his own recipe.

I cannot believe my sheer luck in getting the opportunity to interview Michael W Twitty! Well, luck and a year of trying. The man is BUSY.

This episode is super-sized, because the topic is that important: racism in genealogy and the new AncestryDNA policy that will eliminate all matches below 8cM for all users. I mention the multiple hacks and security breaches on genealogy and DNA websites within the past week, too. But more than anything, this episode allows my cousin, Brian Sheffey, to discuss his experience with multi-ethnic DNA matches and finding evidence of the identities of white ancestors among free black and enslaved ancestors in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This is why I am upset about Ancestry's tone-deaf policy - it will wreak havoc on research among a population that already suffers from a comparative dearth of records or limited access to the documentary record. It also has the potential to affect those researching remote foundlings, adoptees and other unknown parentage cases. I believe that the decision Ancestry has made is evidence of the lack of diversity among their management and leadership, something that Ancestry's CEO promised to change when he voiced support for Black Lives Matter on June 3rd. This is the soundtrack of the YouTube video I released on June 10th, combined with some further explanations and discourse in reference to Reparational Genealogy. It contains challenges to White American genealogists to use social media platforms to start to publicize the facts about their slaveholding ancestors. For those White American genealogists whose ancestors didn't enslave, there are questions to answer, and the same challenge to be met, concerning the truth of how our post-Civil War and non-slaveholding ancestors still benefited from White Privilege. This is a hot topic, too hot for some. It's not a new topic; I've been discussing aspects of it here since the beginning of 2018, and for some years before that elsewhere.
I'm asking that you set your biases, fears, and preconceived notions and do the work of actual genealogy - examine the historical accuracy of what you've been told, of your assumptions, and of your responsibility for correcting an absurdly biased history that has been forced upon American students since the participating soldiers in the Civil War were still alive. If this is too hot for you, I have to say it - this isn't the place for you. I have held my tongue for too long. It's time to do the hard work of self-examination, and of reexamination. I hope that you'll listen, and that you'll join in the work.

Are your kids bored with homeschooling yet? How about some good, old-fashioned Home Ec! Were you required to take Home Economics in order to graduate? I may be dating myself, but I was. We had to learn how to cook, and one of the best lessons was making candy. My mom had it even better - she grew up in a household where making candy was a part of the family's culinary tradition. Some of these recipes go back to my great-grandmother, at least one goes to my grandmother's friend Mrs. Tully, and others are ones my grandmother used and then passed down to my mom. The best thing about those last ones are the crummy high-school typing on the cards - my mom was learning as she went! So give these recipes a try with your kids. Fill them full of sugar. Then, make them run on the treadmill so they don't knock over all of your furniture. They'll learn something, you'll have a project to complete together, and homeschooling won't be just books and exercises on the computer. Take care, pumpkins! Wash your hands!

Well, the landscape has changed a lot since my last episode! I hope that you are well, healthy and stocked and sheltering safely, not worrying about your kin. Today I have some comfort food recipes from my mother and grandmother. We're starting with an apple cake with cream cheese frosting (because on sick days, we can start with dessert), and then we're going Tex-Mex with chili enchiladas, followed by Anglo-American with chicken and Yorkshire pudding. All three of these are pretty easy to make, they take advantage of fruits and vegetables that you probably already have around the house, and best of all, they freeze well. I like having a variety of foods available when I'm not leaving the house much - it makes me feel like I have range and luxury available without breaking the bank. And since these current hunker-down and limited-movement orders look to be something we'll be dealing with for the next few months at least, it's best to plan for some diversity in ready-made meals. I know that the news changes daily, and I know that we're all concerned, but we need to shore each other up with great ideas in the meantime. Welcome to our newest Patreon patron, Melissa McPherson, who is supporting at the Branch level! I'm not much for New Year's resolutions, but I have a lot on my mind as we close out 2019. Highest on the list is this question: How do we participate fully in Reparational Genealogy? I've had a lot of people ask me that question, but until this moment, I think that my answers have been inadequate. Today I'm making my appeal for a practical means of participating in getting your enslavers' names out there for all researchers to find: blogging.
I'm not new in this request, nor with this idea. Plenty of people do this all the time, and it really helps family members to Google a name, find commonalities, and connect. I've never really discussed this on the podcast because I've certainly never done it, and I don't want to be a COMPLETE hypocrite!
Until now, my primary means of working with reparational issues has been by researching other people's trees, and my blog has been a place to publish my podcast. But as of 2020, in addition to podcast posts, I will be publishing information about my individual enslaving ancestors from my own tree, one per post, with complete documentation, images with citations (don't break copyright laws, my pumpkins!), keywords, categories, tags, and so forth. This way, I can get all of the data from my own tree and my own enslaving ancestors out onto the internet for all to use. I invite you all to be a part of the solution, and to do the same, in 2020.

First, we welcome a new Patreon patron, Linda Sparks, and announce that the podcast is now available on Deezer! And of course, this episode is about food and carrying current or new traditions forward for future generations, but first, we have some business to take care of. Did you know that the Federal agency in charge of immigration records here in the United States is proposing a rule that would increase document search and delivery fees by up to 492%? Yeah, I was pretty horrified too. Fortunately, the rule proposal process includes a public comment period. That period only lasts through December 16, 2019, so we need to get on our bikes and ride, pumpkins! I'll discuss that briefly, provide resources for reading the rule and commenting, and then we'll talk turkey. And andouille cornbread dressing. And scallion mashed potatoes, orange-glazed sweet potatoes, white wine gravy, and pumpkin pie. So yeah, this is a well-rounded episode, I'd say.

My mother's mother, Ga, was a quiet, staid woman. She was peaceful, smiling, a model DAR and Midwestern sorority sister. But underneath it all...she was SAUCY. Don't be alarmed, but I'm about to alarm you. A little. Well, I'm going to make you think a bit, anyway. Nothing will happen tomorrow, but it sounds like Ancestry's parent company, Permira Advisers LLP, is willing to take out a very risky loan in order to fund a move that would denude Ancestry of $900 million. Yikes. I learned this from an article in Bloomberg, which you can read for yourself and assess: Ancestry.com Owners Aim to Extract $900 Million Payout With Loan. I was fueled by concern and milk chocolate today, so I recorded this one without a script or a net! If I made errors in my ill-educated understandings or assumptions about markets, economics, finance or financial risk, feel free to contact me and I'll include POLITE comments in the next episode (don't be a Jeffrey, mmkay?). In this episode, I'll discuss what I think they're thinking, and what we should be considering and doing as genealogists, family historians and researchers to keep our work safe day to day.

No, seriously, get out of your head, Whenever you hit a brick wall, a Jeffrey, a Jeffreytina, one of Ancestry's infamous hang-ups, someone who's a 125cM match on AncestryDNA but who won't build a tree (but asks YOU to do it for him/her), or the documents start swimming before your eyes, it's time to STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER and get out of your head and into your body. Or, at least, get into a different part of your head. This episode discusses some of the ways that I step back in order to get straight, and the rules I've set for myself in order to stay sane on a day-to-day basis while trying to get healthy, record a podcast, run a bunch of Facebook groups, manage my Twitter, manage a new newsletter, Patreon, my Facebook page and, of course, my Ancestry and AncestryDNA while starting The Reparational Genealogy Project. You may not need the rules that I need, but it's good to talk about solutions when we spend so much time talking about the problems of burnout, 18-hour rabbit holes, too much coffee and jet lag from conference travel. While I truly enjoy meeting my ancestors, I have learned that the greatest joy in genealogy and family history work is the live people I meet and get to know. Melanie McComb is one of those people. I met her first on Twitter, and she taught me by example how to encounter and engage in the world of Genie Twitter. I took on her ways, and now I'm more comfortable there than in any other online platform! I've also found hundreds of friends there, and I feel comfortable asking and answering questions in threads and one-on-one.
Melanie has, in one short year, gone from speaking as an independent genealogist, working on her own tree, to a full-time genealogist at the New England Historic Genealogy Society and American Ancestors. My mother ended up taking Home Economics at the University of Hawaii because she was trying to figure out what she wanted to do. Wow, was this weekend big! Correcting one set of errors about my grand-aunt led me to find an absolutely horrific story about her, her husband, and her children. I'm telling it to you in all its gory glory, ruminating a bit on how my great-grandparents were responsible for parts of it, and drawing what genealogical lessons and morals I can from it and passing those on to you. Honestly, it's the worst story I've ever run across in my tree, involving orphan's asylums, mental hospitals, untimely and tragic and violent deaths, and lives unfulfilled, while parallel lives went on undisturbed, comfortable, and full of success. The whole story made me stop and think about what little I knew about part of my mother's family, and confirmed some suspicions that had been handed down to me about my great-grandmother. In Western culture, what's the most important Christmas food? The Christmas cookie! There are entire baking competition TV series about the creation and decoration of Christmas cookies. There are entire family traditions about families baking and distributing Christmas cookies. There are secret recipes, national recipes, traditional recipes. In fact, it's become kind-of an obsession in the United States. I'm reaching back to the late 19th- and early 20th-century for cookie recipes (along with one cruller recipe and a few candy recipes) to give you a feel for how Americans fed their guests with sweet holiday treats. Some of the recipes are actually European, but they hold on fiercely here in the States. And to other countries, I give my apologies - I used newspapers.com with broad keywords, but I couldn't find cookies in the Canadian and British newspapers that came up. Lots of cakes and puddings, but no cakes that were actually cookies. I promise that I will do an episode based on your newspapers in 2019! Keep it sweet, my pumpkins, however you spend the next few weeks. 2019 is going to be better.

Have you ever wondered what an old-fashioned, 19th-century, British-traditioned Yankee Thanksgiving was like? In the land of the original Pilgrims, did they really eat turkey? This episode draws on recipes from a November, 1895 issue of The Boston Globe and in it we'll explore recipes that go all the way back to the 16th century in England. We'll also learn whether mince pies really contain minced meat, whether there are plums in plum pudding, and we'll see by comparison to a menu from El Paso, Texas in 1908 that there were similarities and marked distinctions between two very different regions of the country by the time a century or so had passed since the United States' first Federal Census. We're talking folklore again, but this time about the hardest gathering challenge of all: you vs. a room full of your family or friends at holiday celebrations. I'll tell you about my first folklore gathering assignment at age 18, which was me vs. an Irish folk band called Dolores Keane and Reel Union. I was recovering from mononucleosis, and they plied me with Guinness until I couldn't see straight. Suffice it to say that you can learn from my mistakes. Then, I'll recommend Nancy Candea and Yoga Impact 501c3 - specifically, her video at goo.gl/oq3z3c, a short and simple pranayama breathing video that I use to relax when I am tense. It's a great preparation for going into a potentially difficult situation, and gathering group folklore is definitely potentially difficult. I'll discuss other preparations you'll need to make for yourself, things you'll want to account for in the group, and things you'll need to let go of because hey, we can't control everything! It's Episode 3 in our bonus series for Fall - vintage recipes mix with straight-up US history this week as we talk about how the Great Depression changed what newspapers did to extend assistance to housewives at the holidays. I'll be doing this throughout October, November, and December, for all of the seasonal holidays. Today's recipes come from the October 28, 1932 issue of The Miami Daily News. There's an unexpected twist, though - the newspaper doesn't focus on candy and sweets and silly games. With the Depression in full swing and lives in the balance, the Food Section of the paper focuses on more practical foods, and calls on Colonel Goodbody, a fictitious character from the A&P grocery store chain and NBC radio broadcasts, to provide recipes and menu ideas to help homemakers keep it festive yet affordable. It's a completely different view of the kitchen from that taken in the 1900s and 1910s. No frippery, no games, just nutritious food on a budget. But, there are doughnuts. See what you think of Depression-era food in this bonus episode, and a brief discussion of why it's critical to good research to learn about history, and the motivations and actions behind what your ancestors lived through.

It's Episode 2 in our bonus series for Fall - vintage recipes, foodways, social and cultural history culled from early- to mid-20th century newspapers. We're hitting all the holidays that fall in October, November, and December, including Kwanzaa - but I may need your help with that. The recipes I've found in newspapers so far are so corporatized it's ill. Today continues the Halloween, or Samhain, theme. All of these recipes come from the October 23, 1904 issue of The Buffalo Sunday Morning News, and they include candies, cookies, and a booze-soaked flaming dragon that could induce hurt feelings, dashed hopes, and first-degree burns. This may not be strictly genealogy, but I hope that by the end of this series you'll appreciate the importance of a woman's changing role in society and the family over a century, among many other things. By extension, I hope this will help you to see your ancestors' lives more clearly.

So, Latter-Day Saints, your family history is all done, right? WRONG!!! Not only can you work on your tree more (another nag for another day), you can use your special powers in Ancestry to benefit non-Church researchers. You can transfer their ancestors, and all of the research attached to them, from Ancestry to FamilySearch using the FamilySearch icon that only WE have in our Ancestry accounts. But this episode isn't just for members of the Church. This episode is a great way for non-members to learn how it is that they can work with Latter-Day Saints (nope, I'm not saying "Magical Mormons" anymore) to get ALL of their research over into FamilySearch in a clean, simple way. Working together, members of the Church and non-members can make FamilySearch a better, stronger, more representative tree. And when Latter-Day Saints volunteer to work with black researchers to cross their data over from Ancestry to FamilySearch, volunteerism becomes reparational genealogy.

Since October, November, and December all contain holidays celebrated with food, I will be digging into newspaper archives and giving you recipes from early- to mid-20th century newspapers every week, or in some cases, family recipes where newspaper coverage falls short. This month, we'll be enjoying all kinds of recipes that celebrate Halloween, or Samhain. All of these recipes come from the October 26, 1913 issue of The Washington Herald, and all are different kinds of homemade candies. Have you ever wondered where all of those digitized versions of birth records, census pages, or city directories come from? Well, there is no Genealogy Stork. While quite a few organizations provide opportunities and services, the primary way that records are turned from physical page to scanned image to searchable electronic data is a process called indexing, and the three-step indexing process that FamilySearch provides includes a final step called arbitration. I don't know enough about it, though I do know that FamilySearch is the biggest indexing resource in the United States (and maybe the world). I decided to ask a friend to come explain the process better, to discuss options for volunteering to index and arbitrate at FamilySearch and at a few other sites, and to talk a bit about Rice Krispie treats. Family ties, a slight genealogical mystery, a discussion of privilege, 19th and 20th-century classism in Midwestern America, and the value of comfort food all converge in this week's episode of The Family Cookbook. Have you ever looked someone up on one of those reverse-phone-number sites to see who the heck is calling you at 2am? Did you know that those sites, and the apps that go with them, are great for genealogy? In this episode I'll discuss my favorite, BeenVerified, and how I use it to find generations of family members when I'm shrubbing, and when I'm working with someone whose parentage is unclear and who is using DNA for research. Family trees need all the help that they can get; public records aggregators like BeenVerified can provide up to three generations of relatives for researchers looking to fill blanks on Ancestry trees. I'll also tell you how to remove yourself from these databases to protect your own privacy. Hypocritical, huh?

Did you know that family recipes have their own genealogy? I thought I was skimming yet another back-of-the-magazine recipe in a special family cookbook when I Googled Johnny Mazetti, and then one of its key ingredients, Sauce Arturo. It wasn't as simple as I thought. And it made me wonder: did my grandmother pick this recipe up in the Midwest, or did my grandfather's mother pick it up in Panama? A rather big question! I will never find the true answer, but I have solved it to my own satisfaction, barring the additional commentary of food historians or members of the Marzetti family. Join me on the front porch for the story of Sauce Arturo, Teresa Marzetti's restaurant in Columbus, Ohio that became an empire, my mother's undying love for her family, and and my military family's love for Johnny Mazetti.

I talk a lot about component parts, or the basic how-to's of handling records, but what about the how-to's of building one person's life in your family tree? Genealogy has become an immediate-gratification online phenomenon, but it's not always that at all. How long should a 21st-century online researcher be expected to wait before work is done on any one person in their tree? This episode takes on that question, and replies with my ongoing battle to complete details about one person - my great-aunt Clara's third husband, John Joseph Dalain. This story contains marriages, divorces, two murders, one attempted murder, some drunk driving, and just for some spice, a hog theft. It outlines the lives of some very hard-living people in 20th-century America, and the 44 years of work that my uncle and I have put in (well, 44 years and counting) to get the story of one man told. Strap in - there's a lot of procedure here, but there's also a lot of gothic tragedy and scandalous fun!

For our inaugural episode of the folkloric and gastronomic aspects of family history, I'm presenting a staple recipe from my family's cookbook. It entered my family with my mother's mother's stepmother, and every generation that has made it has put a unique twist on it since. Ethel "Itey" Garrard Drahos Hinzie, who brought it into the family with her marriage to my great-grandfather in 1935, was born in Indiana in 1886. My grandmother took over the recipe when she married in 1931. She, in turn, taught it to my mother, who taught it to me. It's a great, basic, savory recipe, and when Thanksgiving comes, I'll show you how to use it to make the most insanely good Cajun/Creole sausage and cornbread dressing you've ever had in your life! Brooke Schreier Ganz felt that way about New York (as so many have) and she decided to do something about it. Listen to my interview with her as she explains her response to the problem: she created a FREE service (and two websites) called Reclaim the Records, a tax-exempt, charitable organization whose goal it is to use Freedom of Information laws at the state and Federal levels to access public, government records and make them available to all researchers. Understanding the historical genesis and management of the decennial Federal Census, the digitization or "indexing" of the Census by FamilySearch, and the proper utilization of Census records in Ancestry is important to good Hygienealogy. And in Ancestry, Federal Census records don't always work the same way - some add all family members to your tree at once, while others only add one person at a time. So, why is that? And what ARE all of the origins of these records? I'll talk about that today in Hygienealogy 2: The Federal Census. Findagrave.com is another great way to provide service to the world of genealogy and family history. It's maintained by a worldwide army of genie geeks with cameras, and who can resist that? Membership is free, people who request photos REALLY appreciate the service rendered, and lots of cemeteries out there are in desperate need of documentation. This week, I tell "The Cautionary Tale of Baldrick's Cemetery" to illustrate. You'll see what I mean. This week I also discuss how you can make a friend with the spirits of those you research by doing this kind of work. Don't believe that life goes on after death? There are a lot of ways that we can serve one another in the world of family history. I like direct service the best. Researching for one another, teaching others, and giving back to those who deserve to have their family repaired or at least explained is very important to me. In this episode, I discuss lookups, the most basic building block of genealogical trading cards. I talk a lot about my favorite thing in the world, Reparational Genealogy (researching and teaching for African-American researchers and students who have no experience and a deep hunger to understand their roots), which is service at a deep level. And, I talk about an idea I'm cooking up, Genealogists for Social Justice - a sort of Marvel superhero band of researchers who fact-check politicians who make shifty claims about themselves and their opponents and constituents. It's a mixed bag, but the through-line is clear: genealogy IS service.

Sometimes, it's good to just stop and take a breath. This week, I'm discussing how to keep it simple in research by focusing all of your energies on one tree, where you provide for everyone in your family - biological parents, step parents, foster parents, and adoptive parents. You'll learn how to handle nervous relatives who might not want their secrets spilled, and why, regardless of your family situation, having one big picture is the best way to approach genealogy. Family history is fraught with fear and secrecy, among the living and for the dead. It's also laden with wonderful surprises. Negotiating the former and discovering the latter is hard enough - Keep It Simple, Researcher: One Life, One Tree.
