Christian History is the whole reason I started this podcast. I love Christian History. As I take a break from the podcast for a little while, I would like to share with my new listeners my favorite episodes which happen to be my earliest episodes on Christian History.
We begin this series with the death of Christ and take you to the end of the first century. I hope you enjoy these.

Our country is multi cultural now. Most of us have friends that we care about that are muslim or hindu. How can we reach them for Christ when we know so little about what they believe? That is where Ken Samples and his wonderful book God Among Sages comes in. Today, we will end the series. In order to understand these religions better, we need to understand Christianity better. Ken helps us do just that.

In our last episode, I began reading to you the first half of the article entitled, "Francis’s Tenacious Lady" by Igrid Peterson. The article was about one of St. Francis’s first female follower, Clare. Please go back and listen to this episode to have the full impact. Let me summarize by saying that Clare grew up different in her very affluent home. She was fascinated by Francis and wanted to follow him and live a celibate life. Her family has other more traditional plans for her and so she runs aways to the early Franciscans. After several attempts of the family to take her back by force, the Franciscans relocate her to San Damiano. We pick up the story here.

That is where Ken Samples and his wonderful book God Among Sages comes in. Today, we will focus on pluralism. Are all religions really just different paths to God? How do we as Christians respond to this question?

Way back in issue 28 I taught you all about St. Francis of Assisi. After that episode, I read GK Chesteron’s biography of Francis. I really have grown quite fond of this Catholic saint even though I am very much a Protestant. His passion for Christ is very admirable. So, when I grabbed issue 42 and saw his face on the cover, all I could say was, “Hello Old Friend.” This episode, I would like to read to you the "Did you know" article written by Mark Galli and Part One of an interesting article about one of Francis’ female followers, "Clare of Assisi called Francis’ Tenacious Lady" by Ingrid Peterson.

I just finished reading Issue 50 of the Christian History Magazine, entitled The American Revolution. Christianity’s overlooked role in the bold venture to gain independence. It was a great read. I have always struggled reconciling the War of Independence with Romans chapter 9 where Paul exhorts us to submit ourselves to authority. What I found reading through this magazine was that I was not alone in my discomfort. I would like to read to you over the next few episodes a few selections from the issue. The second article that I read to you is an interview with American Christian History scholar Mark Gallo. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The story of Ahab is very colorful. He would have to be one of the most hated villains in the Old Testament. Most of the depictions of Ahab in Sunday School and sermons present a very 2 dimensional villain. In reality, he was a brilliant politician and military tactician. Dr. David B. Shreiner returns to Soul Anchor Podcast to tell us about his new book, Ahab’s House of Horrors: A Historiographic Study of the Military Campaigns of the House of Omri which is coauthored with Kyle Greenwood.
This is part three of this interview.

One of the most interesting Christian History Podcasts that I published was Episode 38 on the English Reformation. The 16th Century English history was to say the least, colorful. Smackdab in the middle of everything that happened was Thomas Cranmer. The history books that I used definitely emphasized his importance, but we really did not get into much detail. So, when I grabbed Issue 48 of CHM and saw that it was on Thomas Cranmer, I thought, “Alright, here we go.” What a fascinating man? Was he an amazing theologian, Yes. Was he oily politician? Yes! Was he a pragmatist? Yes. He was the best of them and quite possibly the worse of 16th century Christian England. Intrigued? Let’s get to know him. This the second part of "Courage when it Counted" by historian Mark Galli.

In the last few weeks, we have be looking at a very dark time in Christian History, the French Religious Wars of the 16th century. What I have learned from Christian History is that God always has a way of making important things happen in the midst of tragedies in order to further his kingdom. In our last installment of this series, I would like to focus on what happened next. This did take place 300 years ago. What happened to the Huguenots who fled France. What happened to the ones who stayed? Let’s find out by having me read to you Escape from Babylon by Bertrand van Ruymbeke from Issue 78 of CHM.

What I have learned from Christian History is that God always has a way of making important things happen in the midst of tragedies in order to further his kingdom. So, today I would like to introduce to you one of the shining beacons in the dark, his name was Pierre Viret. Now, when we think of the Reformers, we think of Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Farel, but not of Viret. Why? And what about Viret is so important that we really should mention his name among these giants? Let’s find out as I read to you from CHM 71, The Forgotten Reformer by Robert D Linder.

So, in our last episode we took a deep dive into the French religious wars of the 1500’s and they were many. We read about the political controversies, the bloody riots, and the martyred Huguenots. But we really did not learn much about who these people were, what they believed in, how they lived their lives. This article from CHM 71 is called Order in the Church as is written by Raymond Mentzer.

When I published short series on John Chrysostom on the NNH of the faith series, I got hearty approval from my Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic friends. Remember, they venerate our friend John. But then Dax, the Greek Orthodox deacon, issued a challenge for me. He told me that it is traditional for every Orthodox church to preach a John Chrysostom sermon every Easter, so he challenged me to publish this message for all my Protestant listeners so that we can appreciate the richness of John’s ministry. Challenge accepted. In the midst of this dramatic and dark series of the French Wars, I give you John’s Easter, or rather Paschal Sermon.
Here is the Sermon:

In our last No Name Heroes of the Faith Series, I introduced you to one of the most important men in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, John Chrysostom. If I was to spend 10 episodes on him, I would not be able to do his life and times justice. So, because I only have this one, I would like to read to you a fascinating article by historian Carl Volz informing us about what John is best known for, his preaching. This article is called the Genius of Chrysostom's Preaching.

Who were these Huguenots? What was this religious war in France? What effect did it have on Christian History? Well the magazine answered all the questions. The far reaching effect that these people and their plight had on European history cannot be underestimated. Even the early history of America was affected by these people and those wars. Normally, I reserve the Saturday podcasts were new content and I read to you articles from CHM on my No Name Heroes of Faith Series which come out every other Wednesday. But, I was kinda needing a break from creating new content and this issue fascinated me so much that I would like to spend several weeks sharing with you all my new obsession: the Huguenots. This period of time, the 1500s France were awful. A whole century of people claiming to be Christian killing other people who claim to be Christian, sometimes, like savages. This has to be one of the darkest moments in Christian Europe. The violence and sheer evil perpetrated is mind boggling. I will be reading to you selections from CHM issue 71, The Huguenots and the Wars of Religion. First up, "The Saint Bartholomew's Massacre" by Scott Manetsch

If you were to ask a Catholic or an Orthodox who John Chrysostom is and they know a little about history and their own liturgy they would tell you a lot. Unfortunately, if you were to ask the same question of a Protestant, most of us would answer...Who? So, for us ignorant Protestants, let me introduce you to one of the most important Christians in Christian History. You can learn a lot about him by reading Issue 44 of CHM, an issue devoted exclusively to his life and times. Today, I would like to introduce you to ya snapshot of the man by reading to you one of my favorite sections, Did You Know.

In our modern secular culture, to be called puritanical conjures up negative emotions. If you are puritanical, you a sexually repressed, a stick in the mud, you have no joy, too heavenly minded to be of any earthly good. It would seem that whatever this culture accuses people of being, probably the complete opposite is the truth. So, let CHM introduce you to the true Puritans. They were anything but “puritanical”, they were a dynamic, evangelistic, deeply spiritual and compassionate group of people that wore colorful clothes and loved to party in a pious sort of way.
