Most sermons and books on marriage from a Biblical worldview focus on building a strong, Christ centered marriage. If you cruise the aisle at the local bookstore, you'll find dozens of titles from Christian authors about how to maximize the happiness and effectiveness of your marriage. But not everyone starts at "happy" and gets to build from there. What if you find yourself in a stressful, difficult season of marriage? Tim and Denise Harlow married young, and quickly found themselves with three small children and one of the fastest growing churches in America. Which isn't the easiest set of circumstances for anyone, let alone a couple who had only shared a last name for a handful of years. Today, they describe themselves as happier than other, and love sharing what they learned with couples who feel like they've hit a brick wall. This episode is about what to do if you find yourself in a difficult, draining and stressful season of life and marriage, and how your relationship can come out happier on the other side because of your committment to Christ and your spouse. It's not a conversation with pat answers, but rather a look at real life in the trenches.  Tim's latest book is Life on Mission, available at Amazon. Denise's podcast is Womentum, and available via iTunes or wherever you subscribe to audio.

It was the first step out in a new focus on serving that now stretches from the mayor's office to the homes of local refugees. And each year people are finding Christ after being introduced to the church from programs ranging from a community garden to being handed a gift card at a time of need.Learn more at: http://www.lovemycitylansing.org/

Notice This episode contains sensative information on one Christian's work with former gang members and victims of human trafficking. Chris Baker has removed or covered over 4,000 tattoos for former gang members and victims of human trafficking. His work to give people a fresh start has been covered everywhere from Buzzfeed to the Chicago Tribune. Growing up in Los Angeles, Chris Baker was what police referred to as a "known associate." He wasn't a gang member himself, but could be found in the vicinity of the criminal underworld. After a good friend was killed in a drive by shooting, Chris and his family moved to Chicago, in search of a more peaceful life of opportunity. Although Chris had some experience with church growing up, he didn't truly meet Jesus until adulthood. When he was searching for his calling, God showed him it was already in his hand--a tattoo gun. This is an episode about removing the physical reminders of past trauma, but it's also about listening to God's call, and staying strong in your own faith and as a family when faced with massive obstacles to overcome. Finally, Chris shares some vital wisdom about keeping your children safe in the digital age. Learn more about the work of Ink 180 via their website. http://ink180.com/get-involved/funding/Follow ink 180 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Four weeks after New Years, most resolutions have been broken. It could be that this year you planned to start a blog or YouTube channel, open a side business or to start selling an art or craft online. It's easy to dream big as the ball drops, only to see your aspirations fall apart in the short, cold days of January. A veteran publisher in the Shine.FM listening area, Julia Perla Huisman had dreamed of starting her own magazine, but also had to deal with the realities of time, family responsibilities...and well, money. In 2017, Julia launched Here Magazine, dedicated to shining a light on local culture, food, events and activities that make life in Northwest Indiana so unique. In this episode we discuss: --leaning on God's strength, even while wrestling with the reality that your idea or venture could fail.  --getting the whole family on board with your vision, including understanding the sacrifices.  --the things you must wrestle through if you child wants to launch a YouTube channel or online brand of their own.  --how your spouse can be your greatest ally in your adventure.  Stronger Together airs weekly on Shine.FM. That's exactly what we do in this episode with Dr. Karen Cassiday, Chicago therapist and former TV Host for Animal Planet (really!) In modern Christianity, we tend to view jobs as "sacred" (pastor, worship leader, missionary) and "secular" (teacher, police officer, construction worker). But that's not an idea found in the Bible. Rather, it sneaked it's way into Christianity a few hundred years after Jesus. Andrew Scott sees much of the future of spreading the Gospel happening both in the U.S. and around the world, as happening at work.  This episode is about how to find what you love, how to work with excellence when you're there, and how to share the Gospel with the people God puts in front of you while you're doing it.
