Since Daniel Rider’s last appearance on the Ocean Protect podcast in 2022, he has made the swap from Blacktown City Council to Ocean Protect - to become Ocean Protect's Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) Specialist. In this new role, he is currently leading the development of the WSUD Maintenance Compliance Framework to help councils across Australia improve stormwater management. In this chat, we talk about all things to do with the WSUD Maintenance Compliance Framework, such as the benefits to the communities and the environment, what the project is, who has been involved, the challenges councils are facing, and the very important question of whether it is illegal not to maintain WSUD assets.

Associate Professor Mathieu Pernice is Deputy Director of the Climate Change Cluster at the University of Technology Sydney, where he also co-leads two research teams in Algal Biotechnology and Seagrass. He is an expert in climate change and sustainability, and has over 15 years of experience in technology transfer from University to Industry more particularly in Environmental Impact assessment, Aquaculture, Food and Biotechnology. Murray Powell is "Mr Stormwater" - with over 30 years experience in protecting our oceans and waterways from stormwater pollution. Murray is Managing Director of Optimal Stormwater, Vice President of Stormwater NSW - and brings an enormous amount of passion and experience (and a very yellow jacket) to the stormwater industry and beyond. Carolin Bapp is a scientist and recently completed her Masters Research from the University of Vienna. Carolin co-authored the study published this month in the Chemosphere Journal, which showed that microplastics can persist through cell division and may contribute to cancer spread. In this chat, we talk about the study methodology, results and implications. We also chat about Carolin's recent experience on a remote beach clean up with Sea Shepherd Australia at Mapoon in north-west Queensland.

Dr Andrew Thomas is Executive Officer at Cooks River Alliance and President of Stormwater New South Wales. The Cooks River is a 23-kilometre long (14 mile) urban waterway located in south-eastern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia - and, since at least 1997, councils and community groups along the river and across the catchment have worked together to improve the health of the river. In this chat, we discuss the key challenges associated with its protection, the wins achieved so far, and why this matters not just to the environment, but also the health and wellbeing of all us who live and work in the urban jungle.

Dr Damian Lettoof is a Postdoctoral fellow at CSIRO and loves snakes. Returning for this second Ocean Protect Podcast appearance, we chat about Damian's new research that has found tiger snakes in Perth’s urban wetlands are accumulating high levels of chemical substances from ingesting PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), impacting the venomous reptiles’ overall health. The research, jointly led by Curtin University, Australia’s National Science Agency CSIRO and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, tested tiger snake livers to better understand the impact of PFAS, which is commonly found in firefighting foam, water repellent clothing, and food packaging.

Kimberly is the co-founder and CEO of Carapac - a company that takes waste crustacean shells and makes sustainable plastic alternative packaging. Frozen food processing plants across the Asia-Pacific region cumulatively produce about 8.1 million tons of crustacean waste per year. Carapac takes this otherwise 'waste' and makes truly biodegradable alternatives to petrochemical-based plastics.

Marina is an Artivist, who began picking up trash on local beaches, creeks & streets over 20 years ago. In 2009, she began to create pieces of art that questioned the use of single use items and the amount of waste we create - and her work is exhibited regularly at galleries, 'trashion' exhibitions, 'inconvenience stores' and the current 'Sculptures by the Sea'. Justine is a Research Technician with CSIRO's Marine Debris Group, where she established a method for detecting microplastics in deep-sea sediment and was subsequently the lead author of a paper publishing the first global estimate of microplastics in deep-sea sediment. We talk about deep-sea microplastics and helping to stop it 'at source' with gross pollutant trap sensors and AI technology.

Craig Fairbaugh has gone from rock star to rock star stormwater engineer. After shredding the punk rock scene with bands like Transplants, +44, Juliette Lewis and the Licks, and Mercy Kilers, Craig went on to even bigger and badder things - helping to protect the planet from stormwater pollution. As Regional Regulatory Manager at Contech Engineered Solutions in Oregon USA, Craig is a recognised expert in stormwater treatment, helping state and municipal agencies in achieving stormwater compliance with manufactured treatment devices, as well as sharing national industry best practices for developing stormwater programs.

Dr Mitchell Call and Dr James Sippo are postdoctoral researchers at Southern Cross University at Lismore, in Northern NSW, Australia. The Wilsons River flows through the city of Lismore to the Richmond River estuary. In late February 2022, the biggest flood in modern Australian history inundated Lismore and the rest of Northern NSW. In this chat, Mitchell and James describe the flood, the incredible rescue efforts, the subsequent estuarine health impacts, climate change, and what can be done to mitigate future flood impacts in Lismore and the wider Wilsons and Richmond River area.

Puget Sound is a sound of the Pacific Northwest (in north-western USA), an inlet of the Pacific Ocean, and part of the Salish Sea. Every 'fall' (Autumn), more than half of the coho salmon that return to Puget Sound’s urban streams die before they can spawn. In some streams, all of them die. But scientists didn’t know why. Enter Ed Kolodziej (Associate Professor at the University of Washington) and his research team - who discovered that, when it rains, stormwater flushes bits of aging vehicle tires on roads into neighbouring streams. The killer is in the mix of chemicals that leach from tire wear particles: a molecule related to a preservative that keeps tires from breaking down too quickly. We talk about this research, the implications to waterways everywhere, and what we can do about it.

Cigarette butts are a very big little problem - with some 8 Billion littered every year in Australia alone. Butts are also NOT biodegradable and are actually plastic, and can take up to 15 years to break down - albeit not before leaching some very nasty chemicals into the environment and/ or ingested by wildlife. After witnessing the devastating impact of discarded cigarette butts on beautiful locations around the world, Shannon was inspired to resign his corporate role and dedicate himself to No More Butts. We delve into this big little problem and Shannon's plans for "a butt free environment".

Pieter Jan Kole is a part-time student at the Open University of the Netherlands. Recently observing tyre debris at a Formula 1 race track got Pieter thinking about tyre wear and tear - and where it all goes. Pieter's ground-breaking research has now shown that tyres are a significant source of microplastics in our oceans - and a key risk to aquatic (and likely human) health. Lynton Mortensen is a mild-mannered lawyer on land, but a 'sea bull' in water. He's the first Australian and only the 12th person in the world to complete the 'Oceans Seven' - a gruelling combination of the toughest open swims in the world. We chat about these swims and his most recent epic splash - a 30km swim Lord Howe Island to highlight the plight of the Flesh-footed Shearwater (muttonbird) and help raise funds for the ongoing research by the Adrift Lab team.

We kick off season 3 of the Ocean Protect Podcast with Damian Lettoof - a PhD Candidate at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. Damien has been catching and analysing wild wetland tiger snakes around Perth as part of his PhD research. His analysis shows metal contamination in these snakes is chronic, and highest in human-disturbed wetlands, suggesting all other plants and animals in these wetlands are likely contaminated as well. We talk about the research, along with a few tips on how best to leave the snake encounters to Damian.

Dr Denise Hardesty is Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere, based in Hobart, Tasmania. Plastic contamination of the marine environment is widespread, but the extent to which the marine food web is contaminated is not yet known - until now. Francisca Ribeiro is a PhD candidate from University of Queensland who led a recent study that has found plastic contamination in samples of popular seafood such as prawns, oysters, crabs, and sardines. The study is an important step to understanding the potential harm microplastics in seafood could have on human health - and Francisca gives us the low down on the study methods, results and what it all means next time you're thinking about eating your next seafood meal (or not).

For decades, those party animals within the balloon industry relied on one industry-funded study from 1989 which claimed that, after six short weeks, balloons degraded “at about the same rate as oak tree leaves” and there was no way that balloons were a threat to wildlife. Of course, wildlife would disagree with this - but some robust science was needed to pop those balloon myths. Enter Dr Morgan Gilmour and Dr Jennifer Lavers from Adrift Lab. Dr Janice Brahney is Assistant Professor at Utah State University, and recently led a research team that has shown that microplastic particles are accumulating in even isolated areas in the United States (national parks and national wilderness areas), after they are transported there by wind and rain. The numbers are staggering. Based on their research findings, it is estimated that more than 1000 metric tons per year fall within south and central western U.S. protected areas. We talk to Janice about the research methods and staggering results that highlight a dire plastic pollution situation that needs immediate action.

We recently caught up with the trailblazing organisers of the Ocean Lovers Festival - Anita Kolni and Carolyn Grant. Tom Hickman is the founder of Bali Hope, which brings together extraordinary people for unique endurance events that make change happen. One of these events is the Bali Hope Swim-Run, which will see around twenty teams of two race across land and sea to protect the future of the islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. The vision of Bali Hope is to help transform these islands into an example of what’s possible in the fight against plastic pollution and the ocean crisis.
Jeremy and Brad will be one of the teams of two competing in the Bali Hope Swim-Run in December 2019. The event will see them them literally tethered at the hip for a total of 20km of running and 3km of swimming.

Claire, Rachel, Jeremy and Brad get together to talk about 'closing the loop' one container at a time - and help get a cleaner planet. Nicholas Brenes is a passionate student on the verge of finishing his Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management. As part of his studies, Nicholas has undertaken two honours’ theses on the analysis of ‘emerging contaminants’ in the waterways of Brisbane (in Queensland, Australia), including PFAS and microplastics. PFAS has been the subject of significant public concern, media attention and legal proceedings – and that’s just one of the contaminants discussed in this chat with Nicholas. Dr Duan March is a veterinarian and Director of the Sea Turtle Foundation – a non-profit, non-government group based in Australia working to protect sea turtles through research, education and action. Although too modest to admit it, Duan is a superstar – playing a key role in the rescue and rehabilitation of many sea turtles, including ‘Stumpy’. In this chat, we talk about key threats to turtles around the planet and how Duan and the Sea Turtle Foundation are working to mitigate these threats through rescuing stranded turtles, training others to respond to trainings, educational programs and supporting research.

In this episode, Jeremy and Brad are joined by Darrell Blatchley, who is a Marine Biologist and Curator of the D’ Bone Collector Museum in Davao City in the Philippines.
Last Saturday morning, a starving whale has found in waters off the coast the Philippines. The whale died shortly after. Darrell and his team rushed to recover the whale to investigate the cause of death. Like a very large number of marine animals, the whale had died of starvation and dehydration as a result of plastic ingestion. Inside the 4.7m long juvenile whale, Darrell found 40 kilograms of plastic, including 16 rice sacks, four banana plantation bags and many grocery and general plastic bags. In this podcast episode, we discuss Darrell’s investigation of the whale and the 61 other necropsies he has undertaken on whales and dolphins over the last 10 years. We also discuss the sources of plastic pollution in the Philippines and potential solutions.

With so much focus on single use plastics, Jeremy identified a need to evolve the conservation about waterway health to include how pollution (including, but not limited to, plastic) reaches our oceans and waterways. Over the past 12 years, Jeremy has led various innovation and product developments focussed on creating cost effective ways to protect the environment such as using reusable products and natural alternatives. By applying his technical knowledge with his passion for the environment, Jeremy has led the sector and regularly participates in industry groups and conferences.Brad Dalrymple recently joined Ocean Protect as Principal Environmental Engineer and brings with him over 18 years experience and industry accreditations (RPEQ, NPER and CPEng). At Ocean Protect, Brad’s role is to support the development and implementation of stormwater treatment technologies, asset management initiatives and community education programs aimed at helping to protect marine and waterway health. He is also a lecturer at Griffith University where for the past 12 years he has been responsible for the environmental hydrology and hydraulics subject. Prior to Ocean Protect, Brad was the Senior Environmental Engineer and Manager of the Urban Water Team at environmental services firm BMT. He was responsible for the planning, design and implementation of integrated water management and water sensitive urban design strategies on a range of applications including award winning master-planned communities, catchments and regions.
