The Sky House Herbs Podcast is hosted by Ashley Litecky Elenbaas. This show covers a variety of topics such as connecting with plants, using herbs to support your health, and much more. The Sky House Herb School + Apothecary also offers herbal apprenticeships, consultations, and gatherings for curious and conscious wellness seekers.
In this video, I’m going to dive into the concept of control—what it really means, what it doesn’t, and the surprising history behind the word itself. Then, I’ll break down three practical ways you can use herbal medicines to regain control in your life. Many people want to incorporate herbs, but they don’t always move from idea to action. Real control is about creating cohesion and alignment between what we value and what we do.
Here are the three ways to get started:
These three practices will help you bring what you want into alignment with what you see in your life every day.

In this month’s feature on Echinacea, we’re diving deep into the roots (literally and historically) of this powerful plant. I’m Ashley Elenbaas, a clinical herbalist with over 15 years of experience, and I’ll be taking you on a journey through the traditional uses of various Echinacea species—especially as they were known and used by Indigenous peoples of North America long before this plant became the “immune activator” we know today.
While Echinacea has been popularized for immunity, its historical applications were far more varied. In this episode, I’ll share how this herb was used for “bad blood,” wound healing, and even emotional states like depletion and depression. We’ll explore its fascinating chemical compounds, the doctrine of signatures, and ways to bring Echinacea back into our daily lives for a range of wellness needs. Join me to rediscover the depth and versatility of this incredible plant!

In today's video, clinical Registered Herbalist RH(AHG) speaks to recent TikTok claims of Ashwagandha blunting emotions and causing emotional dullness/apathy. Based on traditional uses and indications of using this Ayurvedic Indian herb, it is possible some people may feel lethargic while using this herb due to a constitutional mismatch. More likely, Ashley explains, is that people are hopping on a trend that pigeon-holes one effect of an herb and discounts other underlying factors. In this video, she will look at the scientific data and research surrounding the use of Ashwagandha and the likely reasons for this upsurge in health claims on TikTok.

Negativity can create downward spirals in our lives. We can get fixated on what is going wrong, leading us into patterns that end up causing more pain. In this video, I will share my perspective on negativity, what it is, how we can look at it, and ways we can shift the pattern of negativity by using the four Greek elements: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. By understanding the four elements, we can see our pattern not as a problem but rather as a pattern that seeks us to understand it. We will talk about Bee Balm/Bergamot, Rose, American Ginseng, Angelica, and a few other herbs that work with the elements to shift these patterns and create more ease and healing.

As the world continues to change and our consciousness evolves, we can look to other cultures to help us better understand the larger picture. In this episode, we will look at the medicine of Australian mint, North American Bee Balm, and Echinacea and ways we can explore our collective consciousness, create ripples of change in ourselves and each other, and draw to the underworld as Pluto makes its way into the sign of Aquarius. I share my experience living in Australia and what I learned there. From the indigenous perspective on time and the importance of space to how we define ourselves, there is much to learn from the many people who inhabit modern-day Australia. We will look at the medicine of Australian mint, North American Bee Balm, and Echinacea and ways we can explore our collective consciousness, create ripples of change in ourselves and each other, and the draw to the underworld as Pluto makes its way into the sign of Aquarius. Mary Oliver Poem mentioned
Wild Geese
You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting — over and over announcing your place in the family of things.

As a moon medicine, Madonna Lily also physically cleanses the reproductive organs through mucilage which is cooling and moistening. In this video, we will look more closely at the historical uses of this plant, clinical stories from my life and practice, and how you can benefit from using Madonna Lily in your life.RESOURCESMy friend and fellow herbalist Jesse Wolf Hardin's NEW Plant Healers Path series on HerbRally - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLo-O8bJrheBIPbx9mZNutHK9l5b-GpIxxMatthew Wood's Book "Seven Herbs Plants as Teachers" - https://bookshop.org/p/books/seven-herbs-plants-as-teachers-matthew-wood/10886225Cara - Bear Wallow Herbs - Easter Lily Tincture and Flower Essence Blend -https://www.bearwallowherbs.com/products/easter-lily-flower-essence-tincture?variant=34873485033625
In this series from Nightlight Astrology on avoiding astrological burnout, Ashley joins the conversation exploring mysteries surrounding the planet Uranus and debunking the fears associated with it. Together, Ashley and Adam address recurring anxieties tied to Uranus, reframing the narrative to allow astrology to remain a cherished guide in our lives rather than a source of apprehension. Ashley shares her experiences having Uranus conjoin her Sun and Moon and how this led to huge transformations around family addiction cycles, choosing to close her yoga studio, and how she eventually broke through old stories around letting loose and having fun.
Transitions are a part of life. When we pay attention and take great care to cultivate ease and awareness during transitions, then deep transformation is possible. Mimosa or Albizia julibrissin, also known as the happiness tree, is a wonderful herb for dealing with the effects of trauma or grief. This herb acts as a nervine and supports healthy neurotransmitter activity. Mimosa is a wonderful plant for those who feel scattered, unable to focus, suffer from insomnia or sleep issues, and feel underlying irritation or anger. In this video, we will talk about the science and the use of this herb in ancient Chinese medicine as a spirit tonic and a restorer of healthy nervous system activity.

In today's video, I am hosted by my husband's channel, Nightlight Astrology, to explore a book we are reading together called, "No Bad Parts" by Richard C. Schwartz. The idea of our psyche as one continuous whole Self is only one way modern psychology understands the mind, and in this video, we look at the current Sun square Uranus transit and how it brings up questions around wholeness and parts. We hope you enjoy this discussion of IFS (Internal Family Systems) and how this perspective might open us up to a different way of working with our psyche this week!

Plantain and Yarrow are wonderful first-aid herbs and great to know in a pinch. However, while these herbs help with wounds, their actions are quite different. In this video, we will look at the similarities shared by Yarrow and Plantain and the specific instances where each herb can be best applied. For example, Plantain is an excellent choice for drawing out venom from stings and bites, and Yarrow is best suited for deep cuts that are bleeding. However, I learned so much more about this plant's nuances over this month and through the shared experiences of my students from the Roots and Spheres course. Pickled red onions are a tasty and easy-to-make garnish. Made with simple ingredients, you can likely make this using things you have at home in your pantry. Pickled red onions are good for digestion, increase nutrient assimilation, and according to the Indian system of Ayurveda, they fulfill our body's need for the sour taste in each meal. Add them as a topping to eggs, sandwiches, salads, and more!
Ingredients: - One Red Onion - 3/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar - 1/4 cup Water - 1 tsp Salt -2 tbsp Sugar - 1 tsp Peppercorns
Directions: 1. Mix 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar and 1/4 water in a small saucepan over low heat.
Add 2 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp salt to the saucepan and stir until dissolved.
Thinly slice one red onion and add onion pieces to a glass jar. An old jelly jar works well. You can stuff them in if you need to!
Pour the contents of the saucepan into the onion jar and add 1 tsp of whole peppercorns.
Cap and let sit for 30 minutes and they are ready! Keep in the fridge for 2-3 weeks (if they last that long!)
Join herbal friends Ashley and Holly as they chat about growing herbs and plants from seed, their experience caring for tadpoles, and the beginning of a conversation about rewilding. Holly Hildebrandt has been growing seeds since childhood, maintains a thriving home garden, and works in a plant nursery each year, starting and maintaining native plants and flowers. In this episode, you can sit with us for a casual chat about sowing seeds and several divergent topics, including our experience tending tadpoles as they transitioned into frogs and the terror and excitement we experienced in mothering them.
Supporting our bodies through the transition from winter to spring can be gentle and, at the same time, effective. In this episode, we will explore detoxification, metabolism, stoking the inner fire, and herbs for increasing effective elimination and cleansing via the liver, lymph, and circulatory systems.

Damiana, Turnera diffusa, is a shrubby plant native to Mexico known for its aphrodisiac properties. In this episode, clinical herbalist, Ashley Elenbaas, will share her experience dieting this plant for 28 days, or a full moon cycle. The theme that played out in her experience of Damiana was a reframing of pleasure. Ashley shares how her childhood understanding of pleasure informed her ability to experience joy as an adult. Through the course of 4 weeks, Ashley shares how each week highlighted an aspect of the pleasure and slowly opened the doorway into a more mature and integrated experience of pleasure itself.

It's a cozy deep winter week, and I wanted to bring you along with me to far Northern Minnesota. In this video, I will share a bit about my recent trip to Lutsen, Minnesota, and some of the herbal and process-oriented takeaways that go along with the work of the winter. I hope you enjoy this more story-based episode, and would love to hear your thoughts and comments!
February’s Herb of the Month is Damiana or Turnera diffusa. This warming, aromatic herb is native to Mexico and the arid regions of central and South America. Damiana has a long history of use as an aphrodisiac and was used to increase endurance during long periods of travel. I chose damiana for the month of February as it is an herb that speaks to us about love. Not only our need for love and intimacy and connection with others but also our need for connection and intimacy with ourselves.
During this month of Valentine’s Day celebrations, you might try drinking damiana tea to get in touch with your sensual and intimate needs.
I recommend brewing damiana leaves as tea.
🌿 Add 1 teaspoon of dried herb to 2 cups of hot water and steep for 5 to 7 minutes covered.
🌿 Then strain and add a little bit of plant-based milk to reduce its drying qualities.
Enjoy a warm cup of damiana tea every morning, and if you have time, take a few minutes to sit and journal about how you’re feeling and any other sensations or images that arise.

In this video, herbalist Ashley Elenbaas will share the indigenous creation story of the coffee plant as shared by the Ormomo people of the West Wallaga region of Ethiopia and how approaching coffee in a sacred way can change the way we relate to this everyday plant.

It’s grief season again when all the feels come up and the year's losses become more palpable and clear.
As a clinical herbalist with over 15 years of experience, I have found Pine to be a very helpful herb in processing grief.
Pine opens the lungs and airways as a bronchodilator thanks to alpha-pinene and other volatile oils.
This can help us take a deep breath and begin to reach into the darker spaces inside the heart, lungs, and chest.
Pine also has anxiolytic and anti-depressant qualities, so it can help lift and ground us while we dive into these pools of grief.
My favorite way to use pine is to steam it on the stovetop in a large pot of water.
Just take some boughs or branches and place them in hot water and keep the temperature low enough, so it steams without boiling.
Refill the pot with water every few hours.
You can pour this Pine tea into a mug and drink it. Pine is high in Vitamin C and will reach right into the heart with its evergreen wisdom.
Grief is hard to bear alone, so call in this evergreen plant friend (isn’t that a wonderful image to hold during loss, the evergreen spirit?) to support you this holiday season 🌲

In this episode, Ashley Elenbaas and Rukmini Walker explore the autumnal theme of the harvest and thanksgiving. Through an interfaith inquiry, we dive into the words and works of great mystics and wisdom keepers to unlock the sacred secrets of gratitude. We hope you enjoy this episode and welcome your thoughts, ideas, and questions!
Thanksgiving Prayer inspired by Reshad Field:
Let us turn to each person as the most sacred person on
earth, to each moment as the most sacred moment on
earth that has ever been given to us. This moment may
never happen again, because no two moments are ever
alike. Can we perhaps awaken a bit more, breathing
together with God, harvesting our gratefulness?

I've been thinking a lot lately about seeing plants as friends. It’s common for us to see plants as purely something we use and simply consume. And in a time of social isolation, we need more friends!
