The game monopoly in my house not only ended with a fight, but began with one. You see, each of my family members had to get the right metal marker to symbolize them and the adventure they were about to take into corporate financing and scandals. It is a ridiculous way to start a game. Or is it? Thinking back, these symbols might have represented more than we thought. They might have just embodied the type of player we see ourselves as.
This idea of what type of player we are is not only found in the starting pieces of monopoly, but in hardcore game design. This episode, Sean and I dig deep into the Bartle Test and the gamer profile. Learn to see how this gamer personality test can help you create balanced teams, more efficient workflows, and an overall better classroom environment. At very least, it is going to give you something to think about.

BOOM! Heather Marrs, @hmarrs24, has joined the #wellplayedu crew. This episode pops right off the ear bud. Heather shares how she got started, things she noticed and how her students soared in her gamified class. So much shared, and so much gained in this episode. I really loved having a chat with this dynamic educator who is constantly striving for bringing the best in her classroom.
While the episode is about gamifiy in elementary, it is unbelievable that all that was said can be applied to all classrooms K-College! Looking forward to many more conversations with this talented educator.

This is the very first podcast post ISTE and we are doing it up with some tech based aspects of our games. In this particular episode we are discussing the power of video trailers to launch students into new aspects of our game. You don't need to be the next Steven Spielberg or have the Pixar team behind you to make one of these videos. Just have a listen and learn some great ways to integrate this into your teaching flow.
I'll take colors that end in urple for 500 Trebek. If you ever saw the SNL celebrity Jeopardy skit you know what I am talking about. These funny moments are just about every other word on those shows. Sadly, plain old Jeopardy as a review game is about as exciting to our students as it is to watch people reading the dictionary out loud. Ok, it might not be that bad, but still, it has the old game mechanics that are just outdated. Simply put, we can do better. In this episode, which is clearly the first in what will be a series, focus on designing review games that are both educational and fun! Adam Renard and Michael Matera share some of the design principles needed to build a fun game review. Each of these review games will be filled with meaningful game elements that engage and motivate students to continue to do their best. The best part about it is that you are encouraged to be the game designer. It is in you, even if you don't know it yet. Just have a listen and see your ideas and excitement grow.
