There are three things from your normal ADV gear that may need to be swapped out for long distance travel: Tires. Aggressive tires work great for ADV riding and are the choice for many, but for long distance travel does longevity surpass the need for traction? How do you decide what tires to run on any given trip? Boots. Heavy, tall, well supported motorcycle boots are paramount for protecting your feet and lower leg, but with the limited space available for long distance travel can you really afford to take them along? Helmets. For ADV riding around home a peaked visor style helmet is the choice for many riders, even with room for goggles. When it comes to long distance travel, do you or would you prefer other features?

Overpacking is a common issue for riders, and the art of packing only what you really need is refined through thought, trial and practice. Experience alone won’t teach, unless you consciously recognize what didn’t work well, then imagine and attempt new methods or procedures to improve. This is about reducing all load including weight, bulk and complexity. But before you even start thinking about reducing your load, there’s another key component that you need to consider first.

Where Do You Rest Your Arse?

Yellow Tents: In the January episode of RAW we talked about yellow tents and insects. Listener, Mike Samsen, wrote in with his thoughts:
"Someone said NOT to get a yellow tent because it attracts bugs. Being the happy owner of a yellow Redverz, I was distressed by my apparent stupidity (though I’ve never had an issue.) Anyhow, being a recovering management consultant, I had to do a little research. As it turns out, it appears yellow is a good color. According to Sciencing.com, "Insects are attracted to ultraviolet and blue light, including black and florescent." Pest Cemetery.com maintains that "yellow lights or the color yellow actually prevents mosquitoes from biting you. Yellow is a color mosquitoes can hardly see and when they do see the color it confuses them. Consequently yellow clothing may be a wise choice to prevent an evening out from turning itchy." So, we discuss the use of yellow tents again and set some things straight.

Advice about Getting Back on the Bike After a Crash:
Geoff Goins asks for input from the RAW panel: I know it has been covered on ARR, and here and there in several other episodes, but I would love some insight from your panel about getting back on after a big crash? The mental barriers and how to deal with the fear. I had a crash last fall that resulted in surgery and a wrecked bike, and I am having doubts about getting back on. I know Sam has had a couple spills, and still gets on and rides.

Huw Gwilliam has done some motorcycle traveling in the USA with his girlfriend, but now wants to go to Central and South America. He wants to know how to convince her that it will be safe and she shouldn't worry about it. And how does he avoid the stress of worrying about her while on the trip?

Brittany Scheid: "I have a few newbie riding questions. I got my license this fall, and so far I have been searching for a good starter bike for myself. I am 120 lbs, 5 foot 2 inches. I need a good bike to practice on too, where do you all recommend to practice, empty parking lots? or do you think going right out on normal roads? I don't have much experience yet and need to gain more confidence."
TJ Lyons: "Can you talk about what jobs people could get into if they want to support the adventure lifestyle?" "... have heard of remote into type of jobs or careers that can be done on the road to make some money from wherever you are in the world."

Dafydd Jones: "In response to your question at the end of the October podcast you asked what is stopping you (the listener) from going on a trip and my reasons are simply cost and a young family? But probably the big one is where to go that’s not mega money. I have thought Europe but not sure where to go, maybe Germany or Switzerland, any advice?"
Anonymous: "... since discovering the Adventure Motorcycling community I have been dreaming on getting on a longer trip. Not a RTW trip but gradually building up my experience and knowledge like you have mentioned to many times on ARR and RAW is the best way to do it. A couple of years ago my excuse was time and money. Didn't know when to do it and was very much into my career. Then..." ... the listener is not able to travel due to a medical condition in the family and the likelihood is that travel will not be for some time in the future. Basic Mechanical Knowledge For Motorcycle Travel: What is the absolute minimum mechanical knowledge you should have before undertaking an extended trip? And what things should you be checking regularly to prevent or foresee possible breakdowns?
Choosing a Travel Mate: How to figure out if you’re compatible? Do you do a short run/overnight first or? How do you handle it when on the road for a time, you decide it isn’t working and you want to go it alone? Especially if you’re in a far off place?
ARR RAW Listeners Questions Answered: James Gale: How stinky is too stinky? I'm interested to know what the esteemed RAW panel smell like. (No, my curiosity is not born of a fetish. It's purely practical and social). When you're going on a long journey what do you do about clean clothes? How many changes of clothes are reasonable given the lack of a chest-of-drawers and limited cupboard space on a bike? Do you plan to stop in towns and use a laundromat or motel facility? Do you take some soap and wash your clothes in a river? Or do you keep riding until the police arrest you for excessive air pollution?
Noel Bowerman: What place did you find confronting? How did you come to terms with it?
Gary Turner: What do you do when you have free time on the trip? I.E. reading, sleep, laundry, drinking?

Scott McQueen: What are costs like on RTW trips? How do you not run out of money?
Mike Jacobson: Can Graham recommend some useful hair products for dry hair I can use in the coming Australian summer? ;) Serious question this time: charging technology on a motorcycle. Phones are relatively easy to charge on a bike if you've fitted a USB port - but laptops and some cameras' need different voltages than the 5V USB supplies or the 12V a cigarette style socket or simple connector powered from the bikes' system will give you . Do you invest in specialized chargers that will run on a 12V power supply or cross your fingers and hope to be able to plug into a 120V/240V mains power socket when the need arises? Also, how much equipment can you actually charge on your bike before you start stressing the bikes' electrics?
TJ Lyons: How do you lock up your motorcycle when traveling? Do you use a chain or heavy duty cable or nothing? I have heard all of you mention so many great tips, but I do not recall anyone every mentioning if they do anything to secure their bike at night.

Travel in Poverty Stricken Areas: When we are travelling we often spend a lot of time in areas where people are poverty stricken or suffering in general because they have so little. How do you deal with that?
Dreams are where adventures begin: Why do you think you actually managed to do your big trip when statistically most dreamt about don’t end up happening?
Adventure Addict: Do you think that after a time you become an adventure addict? As in, you know what the possibilities are, that you can make dreams come alive and therefore, want more. If you do become one, is there anything wrong with that?
Living with wanderlust: For example, you wander for a period of time, go back home and soon find yourself itching to go again, so you pick up and go again. Obviously some people will think it’s really cool and incredible what you’re doing, and others will think that you’re a little off your nut. How do we deal with society’s expectations of us (what society considers “normal”) and maintain our wanderlust?

What about dollar per day? Here is what HU says…
To plan your budget, here's some rough guidelines:
"First-tier" countries such as northern Europe, US$60-80 a day and up per person.
"Second-tier" countries such as the rest of Europe, Canada and the USA, US$40-60 a day per person.
"Third-tier" countries, such as Latin America, US$30 a day is considered enough for the average budget traveller, not counting major items like shipping the bike - or yourself, and repairs and servicing.
"Fourth-tier" countries, parts of Africa and Asia, can be done for less, many for less than US$20 day, especially in Asia.

Episode 4 Topics: Lane splitting & Filtering It’s a dangerous situation for a motorcyclist to be caught in traffic, the stop and go, distracted drivers, etc.
The University of California at Berkeley published a report in May 2015 that says “motorcyclists who split lanes in heavy traffic are significantly less likely to be struck from behind by other motorists”.
The National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety studied safety implications of lane splitting. “A motorcycle’s narrow width can allow it to pass between lanes of stopped or slow moving cars on roadways where the lanes are wide enough to offer an adequate gap. This option can provide an escape route for motorcyclists who would otherwise be trapped or struck from behind. There is evidence that travelling between lanes of stopped or slow-moving cars (i.e. land splitting) on multiple-lane roads (such as interstate highways) slightly reduces crash frequency compared with staying within the lane and moving with other traffic.”
Lane splitting and filtering are a normal practice in many countries…Europe…Asia… riders are expected and sometimes required to pass between vehicles and advance to the front of the group.
If you are not accustomed to lane splitting and filtering (prohibited in most of United States and Canada) and you go to a country where it is law or expected, how can you be prepared for that?
What if you don’t want to lane split - it’s too scary or intimidating - how do you handle that?
