We talk with author Zaylore Stout about the censoring of queer media and the oppression of LGBTQ+ culture. And as luck would have it - our very first episode was a celebration of Zaylore's book Our Gay History in 50 States; a book of queer history that has been targeted by anti-LGBTQ+ activists.

Zaylore is also the founder of Zaylore Stout & Associates so he is able to give us a unique perspective on book bans in America.

Let's talk about respect! I asked people on social media to send me the names of the people that they respect - and not one person they sent was a member of the queer community!

So I had some questions. Namely: who do you respect, why do you respect them, what does your behavior look like when its directed towards people that you respect, and should there be more members of the queer community on the list of people that you respect?

I asked those questions to Dr. Ron Hunter and I think that his responses were enlightening. We previously spoke with Ron about mentorship and that episode is one of our highest rated episodes to date.

Ron is a dear friend who takes respect VERY seriously and in this conversation he challenges me about some of my thoughts on why the queer community doesn't get the respect that I think we deserve.

After the conversation you can at https://www.linkedin.com/in/RonHunterPHD.

Do the actions of the queer community matter as much as those of other communities? Because as a society we seem acknowledge and preserve the historic spaces of straight people far more often than we do of queer people. Why is that?

To help answer that question I flew down to Atlanta Georgia and sat down with preservationist Charlie Paine.

Charlie is a thought leader in the queer preservation movement and his insights have changed the way that I look at and value our queer spaces. Enjoy!

I caught up with Simon as he was going through a change in his life. Just getting out of a throuple. Trying to move forward in his career. And really in the midst of figuring out who he is and what will set his life up for long-term happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment. I think that a lot of the queer community in this same space, this same place and the process of trying to break through and get to where you want to BE makes for a conversation that I think you’ll enjoy.

This is a conversation that you'll come back to again and again. In this episode of Bottomless Coffee Podcast Jerome and guest Brad Forenza explore the intersection of human connection, avian homicide, and the creative arts. And unless I miss my guess - they also become friends!

Around the Sun is a scripted, episodic audio drama that explores human connections, made and missed, with an existential flare. Whether consumed together or independently, the comedy, tragedy, and soul of Around the Sun embraces one character’s assertion that, “We’re never alone… even if it feels like the opposite is often true.” The series was created by Brad Forenza, and produced via remote technology throughout the pandemic, and onward.

We're working through Chapter 2 of What Happened to You and the topic is Seeking Balance. This chapter further focuses on how we move ourselves from feeling bad to feeling good, or - in the language of the book - from being disregulated to being regulated. The actions that we take to move ourselves into a regulated state matter because the the things that make us feel good - or regulated - are not always the things that will help us to thrive. In fact, if we have experienced trauma then the things that make us feel regulated might actually be bad for us. In this episode we talk through how the work of cutting out actions that make us feel regulated but keep us from thriving is the work that helps us to heal.

It's time to level up! As we work to deepen our conversations with our friends, family, and community - it's important to consider the experiences that other people are bringing into the conversation with them. As the host of Bottomless Coffee, I want to be able to bring in a trauma-informed approach to every conversation that calls for it. So - I turned to Oprah. Oprah Winfrey partnered with brain development and trauma expert  Dr. Bruce D. Perry to write What Happened to You? A book that works to shift the way that we think about people who have experienced trauma. We will work through the book and reflect on its lessons. And by the end, we will all know more about trauma, how it might manifest in our networks, and how we can help to heal the trauma within ourselves and help others resolve the trauma that they carry within themselves.

Finding a decent place is one of the drivers of our health and success. But for a long time access to some housing was kept as a privilege for a certain few. In today's conversation we talk with Tom Wheeler of The Wheeler Group and HomeFound Boise about LGBTQ discrimination in housing. Tom is in the unique position of working in two real estate markets, Minnesota and Idaho. In his work, Tom has noticed that the legal protections that exist statewide in Minnesota are only present at the county level in Idaho. Expectations are tricky things, and we deal with them every day in the systems we create - community expectations, religious expectations, and expectations with friends and acquaintances. In a relationship with your spouse, expectations help to reinforce the system your household relies on to conduct its business. You expect that the bills will be paid, you expect that the dog will be walked, and so on. But as a lot of parents know, when you place those same expectations on children who don't have a say in how the system runs - it can lead to problems. So think about those community expectations, religious expectations, and the systems they create. Who had a seat at the table in creating those expectations? And as a result - what consequences do we now live with? Today we're having a conversation with Simon Goettl about how personal, familial, and societal expectations intersect - and how those expectations can contribute to resentment in some cases, and to success in others. https://www.patreon.com/bottomlesscoffee (Support Bottomless Coffee on Patreon!) https://www.instagram.com/jerometevans (Connect with Jerome on Instagram) https://www.bottomlesscoffeepodcast.com/ (Bottomless Coffee Website) Patreon Producers: Aaron Weiss Alex Palacios Ron Hunter Colin Gillens Brendan Phillips

Regarding mentorship in particular, it's clear from the conversation that he has a deep appreciation and understanding and respect for what mentorship MEANS in its most nuanced definition, and for the responsibilities that accompany that mentor-mentee relationship. www.bottomlesscoffeepodcast.com www.Patreon.com/BottomlessCoffee
