You may know Dan Keldsen from his previous work through interviews, articles, and books, like BizTechTalk (audio only podcast from 2006 to 2008), IAM Talking (audio only podcast from 2008 to 2012), and The Gen Z Effect – best-selling book published in 2014, with co-author Tom Koulopoulos.

Dan Keldsen is currently the co-founder of two companies, PlexiCam.com - a remarkably simple, nearly invisible “UnTripod” built to help people get the eye-to-eye human contact we’re all missing from the pandemic lockdown without the high cost, complexity and desk space of tripods, and traditional video gear. And Veventaas.com - which stands for virtual events as a service, which delivers high-end virtual events without the wallet-breaking cost of a Vegas or New York production crew.

Recently Dan launched a new podcast, Next Future Today which can be found on your favorite podcast platform, as well as the website NextFutureToday.com.

Robbie Crabtree spent the first eight years of his career as a trial lawyer. He tried 102 jury trials (robberies, murders, and child abuse cases). This experience helped him take what he learned to coach the national mock trial team at SMU Law School.

But he wanted to share what he was learning with others.

So he founded Performative Speaking as a way to share what he had learned as a trial lawyer for founders and entrepreneurs in the startup and technology world. Over the past 18 months, he’s worked with hundreds of founders, helped clients raise tens of millions of dollars, and run his course for more than 135 people.

He believes that you have a story inside of you. It’s one worth sharing and it’s one that can change the world.

A Quote I LOVE From This Episode

  • "There are so many essential quotes you could pull out like Ben Horowitz's 'The story is the strategy.' And Steve Jobs says 'The storyteller is the most important person in the world.' We're getting to this moment where people are realizing the importance of story. But now, they need people who can be that guide...who actually understands what to teach them."

Quotes I LOVE From This Episode!

  • Regarding effective slides - "We call that the glance test - three seconds or less...If you're zooming down the highway, and you can't figure out what that billboard is saying, then it's not effective at communicating in a glance - and the same is true of a slide."
  • "I think the principles that make for effective presentations face to face also apply to virtual presentations. But that's just table stakes."
  • "When you vary things within your presentation, whether that's the actual content on your slides, the look of the slides, or your tone of voice, it draws your audience back in because we're just trained to be on the alert for something that's changing and so that's a hack that you can use."
  • "Anything that is seen within the camera's field of view, is a device that you can use to reinforce your message. So just hold your hands up a little higher and use your hands to amplify your feeling like, hands-on heart to show how much affection you feel."

  • "When you're thinking about your personal brand, it comes down to the W's that you learned way back in grade school. What, when, where, and why. Really taking stock of who you're trying to influence or who you're trying to communicate with, what you want them to think about you, why it's important for them to think that way, where they consume you."

Three Quotes From This Episode

  • "I think it's having a structure for your presentation and making sure that your message is simple, clear, and consistent."
  • "Effective communication is really simple. And I think it allows time for discussion, input, and analysis - not just consumed by PowerPoint presentations."
  • "So what I've seen is the volume of slides. Sometimes people try to shove in too many slides in a 30-minute presentation...they're talking so quickly, and they're moving one slide after the other. And it's frustrating because you feel like you're almost held hostage...and it's just no fun."

Two Quotes From This Episode

  • "I've gotten very brave. One of the principles I teach is 'ask, ask, ask.' What's the worst that's gonna happen to an email? I'm not even paying for a stamp. It's a pretty low investment. And so many times, I've asked and got a reply back."

Three Quotes From This Episode

  • "I'm a huge accessibility advocate. I say accessibility, "is it compliant?" until I'm blue in the face. I get tired of me saying it. So to be fair to all of our friends who don't see or hear the way we see or hear, right, colorblind, folks, you have to be aware of the colors you're using."
  • On the Presentation Summit - "Some of the most brilliant people in the industry attend. All of the industry leaders go there once who's been there to every single Summit...And everyone there is incredibly friendly and inclusive and pulls you into conversations, even though it's your first time. That's what happened to me. I didn't know what I was getting myself into. And now they're all my best friends."
  • On the Presentation Guild - When you join as the Guild, our whole purpose is to give everyone a sense of community - to go "oh my gosh, there are other people out there like me who do this weird job that no one else seems to want to do!"... I found the people! We want everybody to come in and feel that way."

Three Quotes From This Episode That I Love!

  • "The way it's framed is that you have to show 20 images, and every image is timed to 20 seconds. You basically have six minutes and 40 seconds to give a presentation on any topic that you like. And after doing this for 15 years, I can tell you that I've seen some of the most powerful presentations I've ever seen in my life in six minutes."
  • "It comes down to this: how simple can you make your message?"
  • "Everyone is on an equal playing field... we've had the CEO of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) speak, and the next presenter was a 14-year-old graffiti artist. And both of them have the same amount of time and the same amount of control over that six minutes and 40 seconds. So it's a really interesting context to see presentations."

Larry is a lively conversationalist, engaging lecturer, moving speaker, proficient teacher of Executive Communications, and Master of Ceremony extraordinaire. Larry’s full-time broadcast career spanned nearly four decades. He was inducted into the prestigious Radio and Television Hall of Fame and was the first Ohio Broadcaster nominated to the National Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago. Larry’s career is sprinkled with significant appearances that range from Master of Ceremony for the opening of the new Cleveland Browns Stadium, to hosting Cleveland’s Bicentennial Celebration with an estimated 450,000 in attendance. Larry also appeared on the 100th Anniversary Episode of the Drew Carey television show on ABC. Former Mayor George Voinovich bestowed upon Larry the honorary title of Mr. Cleveland, making him only the fourth person in the history of Cleveland to wear the moniker.

Larry dedicated three years of his life to serving his country as a United States Marine. Ten years later, a request from the Pentagon and his radio station sent Larry to Vietnam. His mission was two-fold: to interview troops on their attitude towards the war and to bring loving messages home to the soldiers’ families. The messages were then played on his company’s radio stations in Pennsylvania and Cleveland during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Larry was honored for his efforts by the Assistant Commandant of the Marines with a special dinner on the Marine Corps birthday.

Larry currently lectures to college and universities, high school students and high level businesses and healthcare institutions on Linking Effective Communications to Strategic Leadership. He was honored by the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame with “An Evening With Larry Morrow.” The sold-out event was the kick-off to the educational series “From Songwriters to Soundmen.”

So just I’ve always had a passion for putting people in the room and creating an arena or a vessel where people can connect and truly get to the core of meaningful relationships. That’s just, that’s the juice for me."
  • "TEDxPortland is a lightning bolt of joy, and ideas and inspiration for this town. The city has embraced it from day one."

Two Quotes From This Episode That I Love!

  • On being different - "So right now, I'm holding up a colored piece of card. And on that piece of card, it says 'Getting really comfortable' And then I turn the card over and the back, and it says, 'with judgment.' Instead of using a PowerPoint or a slideshow, I'm holding up this card."
  • "Anything on a screen is designed to get our attention....anything really - Netflix, TV, a website, an app, a mobile phone - any screen. So in a way, we are competing with all those, and we have to do the same."

Two Quotes From This Episode That I Love!

  • “When you present from where YOU live, your audience is the visitor. And they are all in because you are ruling that space, and they're measuring you against you. If you go to where they live, you will always be a second-class citizen, because you can never be as good as them at being them."
  • "The bigger shift is that your audience has moved from being a passive observer to an active participant...you give your audience permission to engage. So you're saying to them, 'okay, this is how this is going to go - chat to me throughout.'"

Two Quotes From This Episode That I Love!

  • “I use an analogy throughout the book, which likens presentation writing to songwriting...And I love that analogy because a lot of people karaoke. And I would say a lot of presenters karaoke their way through a presentation as well."
  • "I have a concept in the book that I call "aMMMazing presentations." And I spell aMMMazing with three M's on purpose - meaningful, memorable, and motivational."

What a fun and engaging conversation with Tony Ramos! He's a graphic designer, an editor, a writer, a founder, an athlete, a Clevelander, and you will be happy to know that The Presentationist is an incredible conversationalist!

Since 1987, Tony Ramos has helped people tell their stories and promote their ideas. As a proponent of clean, uncluttered design, he strives for:

  1. minimal text and powerful imagery on slides intended for onscreen presentation
  2. balanced images and words on slides intended for print
  3. compelling, easy-to-understand graphics for proposals

For four consecutive years, Microsoft awarded him their Most Valuable Professional annual designation based on his voluntary contributions to the PowerPoint user community. Speaking of Microsoft, as of St. Patrick's Day 2021, he's working for their Proposal Center of Excellence, helping various Microsoft teams win large contracts. He's gainfully employed and busier than an analogy for a really busy person.

Tony is also a co-founder of The Presentation Guild. According to the Guild's website, "There is a wonderful opportunity throughout the working world to identify and define the skills needed to create amazing presentations. We are a global association teaming with passionate professionals dedicated to bringing that clarity to the world."

  • "What are you as a speaker? What is your intent? Why are you giving this presentation? What's the purpose of it? Do you want to move them to action? Do you want to share information that's going to affect their job or their learning? Do you want them to buy something? Do you want them to join your cause?"

Two Quotes From This Episode That I Love!

  • “So we've got 62 micro-skills, and we've given labels and names to all of them. We've laid them out in a beautiful format, which sort of looks like a periodic table."
  • "The simple question I say to people is...if I was to meet you in real life, would you be wearing that headset? Like you're an air traffic controller? "

Two of Episode Quotes That I Love

  • “Don't skimp on the monitors...Don't skimp on the desktop...Don't skimp on the podcast or vodcast quality camera or the microphone. Your typical conference registration fees, hotels, flights, and food would have run you $2000-$2500...invest that into yourself."
  • "This is not going anywhere. Yes, we're going to go back to a physical learning environment, we're gonna go back to work physically...but the hybrid model, at the very least, is not going anywhere."
