Sometimes the thing that is most caring, loving and respectful to yourself may also be the most painful thing you need to do. When I trained for my marathons back in the day, the running was challenging in ways you’d expect, but the recovery and self-care in between could be challenging and uncomfortable too. Despite that, it was just as important so that I could be ready and injury-free to take on the next training day and be the person I wanted to be after that experience. On a run earlier this week, I was thinking that while this type of physical self-care was needed during that time, there’s times where the same can be applied to your emotional, mental and spiritual self care. The most caring thing you can do for yourself might also be the hardest. It might hurt or feel uncomfortable. While hot baths and getting your nails done can be self care, the kind of self care you need most to rise up in the new year may not feel relaxing, fun, or easy. But to step into the highest version of you, it's needed in order experience the abundance and joy in life you're absolutely capable and deserving of.  Painful self-care might be getting your taxes ready, being still, saying goodbye, or allowing yourself to fully experience happiness.  We'll be getting into it more in this final episode of Season 2. See you on the inside! xoxo

Her dream was becoming an air traffic controller. Over the course of 6 years she had put in endless amounts of schooling, 6 hour long tests, and navigated setbacks to even have a chance at making that dream come true when she finally got accepted into the one and only air traffic school.

But after a rigorous training schedule over months of the academy, in the final hour of her final test, she failed.

No redo's. No coming back for another chance. It was over. Within minutes, the dream she had been planning her life around was completely gone.

As you can imagine, she was crushed. As what she lost began to sink in more and more, so did her anger, sadness and sense of purpose.

It was a rough patch that lasted years of feeling lost, uncertain and disappointed, but when you tune into this final interview episode of Season 2, you'll hear about how a mix of more closed doors and tenacity finally opened the one door that explained why all the other ones had been closed.

With everything that's happened this year, I thought Emilie's story was the perfect way to close this Season out as a reminder you're not alone or a failure if you've had your own closed doors and and rugs being pulled from under you. I think you'll also find it uplifting and hopeful that the story isn't over until it's over and there's plenty of opportunity to change the narrative along the way.

AND if you're at all interested in aviation, you're going to hear some interesting behind the scenes of what goes on when you step on your flights!

Be sure and connect with Emilie on Instagram and let her know what you most related to or enjoyed about her interview! https://www.instagram.com/emilieann10/

"Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands the Resistance."

Your worst enemy isn't who you think it is.

The enemy that does the most damage is the one inside your head that you lay down every night with and wake up to every morning.

If there's something you've been putting off - writing a book, a meditation practice, training for a marathon, getting back on the dating scene, starting a business, sharing your experiences and opinions more on social media, moving, a bedtime routine that could help you sleep better - you've most likely encountered what Steven Pressfield calls the Resistance.

It can't be seen, heard, or touched, but it can be felt.

It takes form as procrastination, fear, drama, excuses, victimhood, self-doubt, unhappiness, even love, logic, and healing. It's anything that stands between you and the person you are capable of becoming.

It's self-sabotage and sabotage by others who may even care for and love you, but are dealing with their own Resistance.

It's something that has to be managed every day. It never goes away.

And it's not always so obvious. Instead of encouraging you to never start, it will whisper that you're going to do it - starting tomorrow.

So the best way to combat Resistance is to start. As messy, imperfect, uninspired, and not ready as it might be - start anyway. Because otherwise you're cheating the world of your contribution and gift to the world.

Inside the Book of the Week, The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battle, you'll find 15 other ways to move through the Resistance so that whatever idea that's has been growing inside of you - the one (or more than one!) you've most likely been shoving down because it doesn't make sense or it's not the right time or you're not the one to do it - can finally be brought into existence for your own sake and for the benefit of the world around you.

Is this thing you've been thinking about (for week, months or maybe years!) what you were meant to do and be? The only way to find out it to sit down and do it.

I hope this week's BOTW inspires you to go out and not only add this one to your shelf, but to take that feeling seriously that's telling you to do or be something more. You don't have to knock it out of the park on your first try, or 10th try. The only thing that matters is that you sit down, put your time in, and give it all you've got. xoxo

The title from this episode comes from my favorite cookbooks - Thug Kitchen (more cookbook recommendations at the end) and the Book of the Week is one that transformed how I eat forever.

In today's conversation, we're getting into the book, The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health by T. Colin Campbell PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II.

It's filled with research, studies, and resources on the benefits of minimizing the meat and dairy we consume and the case for adding in more (real) plants.

You'll get a sneak peek of the wide-range of areas this book covers as we go through today, 13-fun and random facts that will give you something to chew on (cheesy pun intended) and might entice you to go and grab this book for yourself.

It is VERY "sciency" so if you like that kind of thing, ,you'll appreciate this. If you're not so much into that level of detail, there's plenty of charts and graphs to follow along and still get the point. Either way, once you get into it, I think you'll find it very eye-opening and maybe even binge-worthy as you learn more about how to live longer, be healthier, and prevent/reverse disease.

You'll hear how despite being a vegetarian since college, I wasn't that healthy (mostly because I didn't actually eat that many vegetables), and how this book significantly shifted my perspective on what I put into my body and what goes into the food I put into my body.

After committing to this transformation a little over 10 years ago, my acne and "backne" that I was still majorly struggling with in my mid-20s became almost non-existent, my skin also felt brighter, I rarely was ever constipated (I thought this could me TMI, but I know you can handle it), I lost weight, and I was able to complete a full marathon, 100% on a plant-based diet, in less than 4 hours (sharing this not to brag, but to highlight the strength and energy I had from this shift).

When you think about food, I always like the approach of how I can add in more healthy foods instead of focusing on all the will-power you're going to need to cut things out. I have found almost by default that will happen overtime by getting crowded out by all the food that's bringing you health and energy.

*I think we all already are aware of this but just in case - I am NOT a medical professional of any kind. The information I shared today is directly from this book or my own personal experience, which most likely will be different from yours. I know you're smart and will consult with your doctor on any major changes this book might inspire. xoxo.

"Everything you need to know to captivate, excite, and motivate an audience (turtleneck not included)."

Standing up and speaking out whether on stage for a presentation, a Facebook live, or even in a team meeting, can be one of the scariest things we do. It can be terrifying to think of having the spotlight on you and to know what others could be thinking about you.

But, without getting visible and sharing our thoughts, opinions, and what we know, it's hard to help others and it can be hard to move towards your goals.

Whether you are running your own business sharing your offers and products or are looking to apply for a new job or promotion, knowing how to captivate, excite and motivate the person or people in front of you can help you make those goals happen.

In this book, The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs: How to Be Insanely Great in Front of Any Audience by Carmine Gallo, you're going to learn how to:

  • create an inspiring brand story
  • answer the question that matters most to your audience
  • paint a memorable and consistent vision
  • make numbers meaningful
  • build visually engaging slides
  • master state presence
  • make it look effortless
  • rehearse effectively
  • have fun

I also share at the end about how to use what you learn from this episode and apply it to podcast guesting with another great resource coming up in December with my former business coach, Christine McAlister of Life with Passion. She's hosting a training called 100 Interviews in 90 Days that is going to teach you how to find and book shows, what to say when you're on a podcast, and how to be the best guest they've ever had with a follow up strategy very few people are doing.

This resource by Patrick Michael Ryan is a little different than the cover to cover reads I've recommended in past episodes, but still one for the bookshelf.

Understanding our own emotions and developing emotional intelligence towards others has been something that I've been exploring for the last couple of years, and this book was the gateway for a lot of that. It's also been a big help in better understanding how I feel beyond simply happy, sad, and mad.

While we may not always want to act on our emotions and say or do something we might regret (I know this from first hand experience...), there are benefits to feeling those emotions fully, however ugly or hard they might be.

In this episode, we get into that a little more along with:

  • how to avoid anxiety when we feel joy or happiness because we're thinking it's too good to be true or about what's around the corner
  • why the goal isn't to feel happy all the time
  • what can happen when we embrace our sadness
  • anger being a secondary emotion and how expanding our emotional vocab can help get to the primary emotion
  • the question my therapist asked me when I was engulfed with rage for weeks that changed my outlook to this day
  • and how by better understanding our own emotions we can more fully show up for others in our lives dealing with their own feelings.

You can grab Patrick's Dictionary of Emotions on Amazon here or at your local bookstore.

As always I'd love to hear from you about anything that resonated or what you got from the book when you read it - message me on Instagram @sarahlynn.co or email at hello@sarahlynnco.com. xoxo

"May you always have the freedom and courage to create the family that you want and need." - Emma Johnson

Certain stats out there about single mothers would have you believe that you are doomed to a life of welfare, struggle and your children are destined for trouble and probably prison. While some of those stats might be true, that doesn't have to be true for your single mom journey.

This week's Book of the Week is a helpful resource for any single mom or mom that is considering decisions that would put her in that situation in the future.

The Kickass Single Mom: Be Financially Independent, Discover Your Sexiest Self, and Raise Fabulous, Happy Children by Emma Johnson is a book I read a few years ago that had a huge impact on how I saw myself as a single mom and inspired me to take full responsibility for my situation and creating the best life possible for my son and me.

In this episode you'll hear about several of the topics covered in Emma's book - some inspiring and others that might be triggering at first - but all will make you think and give you hope how you can not just survive single motherhood, but really thrive in it.

The book is broken out into 4 main sections:

  1. Single 2.0
  2. Money
  3. Parenting
  4. Dating

Within each section, I share some of the specific chapters that stood out to me and lessons learned from my own experience as a single mom, including how I become one, finally detaching from the child support chase, letting go of anger and bitterness, the experience of having an involved father figure for my son from a past relationship, getting over my selfish need to be the only one my son could have fun with, the self-sabotaging strategy of being a mom martyr, allowing for help, what I learned from dating single dads and seeing the "other side," and intentionally seeking fulfillment outside of motherhood and work.

Other chapters that are touched on but Emma gets more into the juicy details on inside the book itself include:

  • Busting through the Stereotypes for You and Your Child(ren)
  • The Importance of Being Financially Independent No Matter What
  • How Alimony and Child Support Could Keep You Stuck
  • Estate Planning for Single Moms
  • Outsourcing = The Secret Formula to Single Mom Success
  • Good Guys Like Women Who Are Financially Independent
  • Co-Parent Like a Pro
  • The Argument for Equally Shared Parenting
  • Your Relationship with Your Ex's New Girlfriend
  • A Sexually Satisfied Mom is a Happier Mom
  • If You're Stuck and Not Dating
  • Where Are All the Good Men?
  • Dating and Your Kids

If you have any questions about single motherhood that you want to ask me don't hesitate to reach out and message me over on IG at @sarahlynn.co or email at hello@sarahlynnco.com! xoxo

BOOK OF THE WEEK

My friend Katie Taylor (IG: @_katietaylor) changed my life a little when she sent me this book as a gift earlier this Spring.

Simple Abundance is a daily devotion type of book that shares messages of creativity, spiritual practices, and reflections for a living a more authentic self.

I don't just have books on a shelf - I have book children so it's hard to pick a favorite, but the fact this one rarely is sitting on a shelf and instead, in whatever room I was last in tells you how much I love and how often I read this one.

Sarah starts each day with a short title and a quote dating back from the 1600s or all the way up to Lady Gaga, so if you're at all a quote person, you'll love it just for that.

If the size of the book intimidates you - don't let it. Each "chapter" ranges 1 -3 pages, so totally do-able to read daily while your coffee brews or while you let the dog out.

At the end of each month, she shares practical ideas for implementing the topics from the month. For example - November she had themes of following the Light, so one of her "Try This at Home" tips was to create a Caution Closet that had a portable light and other items needed in an emergency situation.

Right after those, she shares a list of "Simple Abundance" ideas to make your life easier or better in some way - like having a battery drawer that's fully stocked so you never get frustrated because you don't have a battery for the TV remote or your child's favorite toy.

Listen to episode 88 on the podcast today to get the details on why you might want to pick this book up for yourself (or as a gift!) and one of my favorite exerts about How to Start Over.

"Being a witch isn’t about what you do, its not spells, rituals, and ceremonies. It’s the stance you take in life."

I realize the topic of this Book of the Week, might not be of interest to everyone and for others might even be offensive. One of the reasons I liked this book so much though is because it's not just about what you think it's going to be about.

Yes, Witch: Unleashed. Untamed. Unapologetic by Lisa Lister, a gypsy witch, is a book about:

  • what a witch is
  • the different types of witches (I had no idea there was more than one)
  • the evolution of witches over the centuries
  • the terrorized history many women experienced, self-identified witches and others inaccurately labeled as witches
  • and an entire chapter dedicated to rituals and practices for love, prosperity and good luck

And it's also an empowering personal development book focused on:

  • Naming and facing your fears so that they don't hold you back from all your potential
  • Getting visible and using your voice to express your thoughts and opinions (not just about witchcraft)
  • The "shoulding" we all do on ourselves and how to stop comparing ourselves to others
  • Tapping into and then trusting your intuition
  • Manifesting
  • Journaling and gratitude
  • Compassion and how to call people in vs. call them out
  • The power and magic of all women - the connection we have to the moon cycles, Mother Earth and our ability to create life

I think we can get into a lot of trouble when we only seek out resources that feed our narrative of how the world works, and when we allow ourselves to see it in black and white, good or bad, their way and my way. That's why I picked up this book and why as the same time I was reading a book about Christianity called, Jesus Is ____ by Judah Smith.

I don't want my view of the world, other people different than me, and my beliefs to have unconsciously been created, accepted as truth, and then never allowed to be shifted or changed.

If you're open to it, this book will absolutely give more to think about when it comes to witchcraft and maybe more importantly, about other ways of looking at the world, at other people, and at yourself.

“Don’t trust this book. Or me. Trust yourself.”

"Too many of us don't know how to treat ourselves well, almost as if we feel like we don't deserve to, don't have time to, don't want to feel guilty about doing so." -Dominque Browning, American Writer and Editor

The book of the week episode on Monday was an overview of the relationship book, Conscious Loving (my new favorite! You can find out why here in Episode 84), so in this one we're continuing the theme on relationships, but today, focusing on the one you have with yourself.

And not just the relationship you have with yourself, but how you can still enjoy a full life even when you're not in a relationship.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned in all the dating over the last couple of decades is to focus less on who I want that "special person" to be and more on how I want to feel when I'm with them.

What would be on your list? I have written things like I want to feel fun, adventurous, flirty, calm, etc. and then at one point reflecting on my list when I've met my dream guy, I asked myself why do I have to wait to feel and do those things? Is there a way to feel them now?

The answer of course is, yes and you can start practicing as soon as today.

Would it be nice to have a special someone to experience with all the things in life you want to do? Of course! But that part is out of your hands, so why do you have to wait around to do and have the life you want?

You don't, and in this episode, to help you get the wheels turning for your own list, you'll hear some of the ideas I've implemented to help ignite some of those feelings and live more fully, without waiting or putting that responsibility on someone else.

The Book of the Week is our first book talking about relationships called Conscious Loving The Journey to Co-Commitment: A Way to Be Fully Together Without Giving Up Yourself by Gay Hendricks and Kathlyn Hendricks.

I heard about this one on a recent episode of True Sex, Wild Love with Whitney Miller who I love and follow over on Instagram (@whitnlove), so when she said this book was her go-to relationship book that she's read multiple times, I immediately headed over to Audible to download it.

However, about halfway through listening to it, I ended up ordering the hardcopy because there were so many things I wanted to highlight and come back to. Plus, Part II of the book is all practical application and strategies to implement so I would recommend grabbing the hardcopy as well so you'll have as a reference to come back to.

I've read a lot of really good relationship books over the years, mostly when I've been single (because I wanted to be "ready" :) ) and this is the best one I've read to date.

My favorite things about it are it's focus on coming to a relationship has a whole person, ideas for how to actually be "whole," getting out of victim mode regardless of what is going on, the importance of self-love, and the amazing relationship that can emerge when you're building one another up vs. tearing each other down.

The book is packed full of helpful lists, perspective shifts, examples, and exercises. In this episode, you'll hear the 7 Steps to a Conscious, Co-Commitmented Relationship that I know you'll get something from regardless if you pick this book up or not (but I highly recommend you do!).

Amy Mae is a librarian by day, Human Design Love Expert everyday, and proud plus-sized babe who's a fellow Manifesting Generator going through a transition in her business that she's fully embracing.

We met at a James Wedmore event last year when she bravely stood up and shared a vulnerable moment in her then-business and ever since, I've been so impressed and girl crushing on how fully she shows up to her community in the most genuine and loving way.

In this episode 82 we get into a few topics you might be able to relate to:

  • Why she's changing her mind again (this is why we jive so well :))
  • The journey from plus size personal trainer idea to human design dating business
  • How to know when you're ready to pivot whether it's in your business, your Facebook group name, or your eating habits
  • The initial struggles around being a dating coach when she was struggling with her own relationship (can anyone else relate?)
  • Why she started being more intentional expressing her emotions vs. surpressing them
  • Setting boundaries, especially with those closest to you
  • When you don't know what you actually like or want
  • Taking a break from social media )(your business will not fall apart)
  • Loving your body and the benefits of a good naked dance party
  • The conditioning we grow up with to not love our bodies
  • What the judgment of others really means
  • Not every plus-size person wants to lose weight
  • Why you might want to schedule your own boudoir photo session :)
  • AND of course, do a quick overview of each Human Design type and how they show up in dating.

Much like the Byron Katie book, Loving What Is, that I shared with a few weeks ago, this book by Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. has the ability to almost instantaneously change your life by helping you better understand what’s underneath the beliefs about yourself, your loved ones and the world as a whole and then detach from them as needed to live a more authentic and free version of yourself. This book will absolutely push you to come off auto-pilot for your decision making and help you to come have more productive and loving conversations with people who don’t believe what you do.

How many people will it take to feel relevant? Is wanting for future strangers to find you relevant more important than the friends and family that already find you incredibly relevant in their lives? Is there a way to spend more time and effort with those people than planning for and worrying about getting more? These are just some of the questions my friend called me out on recently when I was trying to explain why I wasn’t living my full potential or purpose yet. And why I wasn’t relevant enough because I didn’t have a certain about followers, amount of downloads, or money in the bank. I’m sharing with you the questions he posed to me that day because if you spend anytime at all over social media you might be able to relate to this feeling and find value in your own reflections from these.

This week's Book of the Week is A Book of Beautiful Questions: The Powerful Questions That Will Help You DECIDE, CREATE, CONNECT and LEAD by Warren Berger.

If you are looking for help with a big decision or to have more meaningful conversations you're going to get so much from this book and catch some helpful highlights in this episode.

I read this book almost two years ago, and to this day continue to go back and reference it. Because of that, if you feel compelled to add it to your own bookshelf, I would definitely recommend the hardcopy. This way, you can easily refer back to it as needed for inspiration and reminders.

The powerful questions in this book can help you:

  • Identify opportunities in your career or industry
  • Generate fresh ideas in business or in your own creative pursuits
  • Check your biases so you can make better judgements and decisions
  • Do a better job of communicating and connecting with the people around you

Whether you end up reading this one or not, you will catch some of my favorite questions from each category and start to uplevel your career, decision making, relationships and life in general by simply upleveling the questions you ask yourself.

Today’s book is a little different than the typical books we’ve covered so far together - The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur is a poetry book. This is a style I always brushed off as airy and fairy and something I wouldn’t be deep enough for. But turns out you don’t have to be to get something from poetry. I’m always so amazed how much can come from a few words or sentences and in today’s episode you’ll hear a poem from each of Rupi’s chapters on life’s process of wilting, falling, rooting, rising and blooming.

"The only way anything was going to change, is if I changed."

Chris Megia is a talented hairstylist and former Vidal Sassoon Academy educator who's been in the industry for more than 33 years (even though it looks like that's how old she is...). She's also a multi-passionate entrepreneur who has experience running her own studio and most recently, teaching other hair stylists ways to generate multiple streams of revenue out from behind the chair.

For the first book of the week review, we’re kicking it off with one of the most triggering books I’ve ever read :) Byron Katie’s, Loving What Is: Four Questions that Will Change Your Life, lives up to its title, but only if you’re willing to do “the Work” on your long standing beliefs about others and the way the world should work. You’ll most likely find yourself arguing with her about why your situation is different and that its not as simple as going thru 4 questions. But it is. See you on the inside to talk more about how even a single chapter can transform your life and relationships, almost instantly, and get the details on how to do your own Judge Your Neighbor exercises.

"If you want a happy ending, well that depends on where you stop your story." - Carson Wells (Amercian actor, director, and writer)

There is a rhythmic ebb and flow in life, but not as much is talked about the ebb as is the flow. The ebb almost feels like something is wrong, you're not doing it right, it shouldn't be this way, and can become a desperate attempt to get into the flow - upbeat happy and blissed out phase where everything is going great.

There's no shortage of books helping us get into and then stay in the flow and be happy.

But there's good stuff in the ebb too, even though it usually doesn't feel like it in the moment. There can be a lot of growth and benefits to being in a rut, feeling stuck, failing, being hurt, getting angry and feeling confused.

In today's episode, we're getting into some of those benefits, ideas for embracing it, and tips for getting out of it when you're there longer than you want/need to be.

The exert from today comes from one of the most well-known Law of Attraction resources, "Ask and It is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires" by Ester and Jerry Hicks through the teachings of Abraham.

What you'll hear today is less about manifesting and more about simply the awareness that we are the creators of our reality. You've heard the saying, "you have to face reality," but if it's not a reality you want, you don't have to face it. Instead create the one you want.

By now, if you listened to the other two Message in a Book episodes, you have some tools and ideas for how to help you better know what that is, so that now you can allow it to unfold through manifestation and inspired action.

This will be the last Message in a Book episode for now, but the Monday interview episodes and Friday where you and me hang out on various business and life topics will still be happening!

The Message in a Book exert today comes from, Lead from the Outside: How to Build Your Future and Make Real Change by Stacy Abrams.

Stacy might be most well known recently for her 2018 run for Governor of Georgia and her 11 years spent in the Georgia House of Representatives, 7 of those years as Minority Leader.

But what you may not realize is that she's also a non-profit CEO, serial entrepreneur, and has authored multiple romance novels. She's managed to have success without necessarily "niching down" and instead has found success in a wide range of areas within her multiple passions.

In this episode, you'll hear about a question she asks that builds on what we talked about yesterday with the understanding of what you want. If you're still not sure what that is, this question today might help you start to gain some clarity by giving yourself permission to break the "rules."

Ashley Mondor is one of the brightest lights of a human being you'll ever come across in real life or here on Instagram. And in today's episode she's schooling us on what in the world the Akashic Records are so that we can uncover answers to our spiritual gifts, tap into our intuition, and create the life we want, not just the one we think we should have.

We get into wide range of other though-provoking and inspiring spiritual and subconscious topics including:

  • How listening to a single podcast episode started her on the journey from toxic work environment, getting yelled at by her boss and putting in long hours to the dream life and work she's doing now.
  • The shift from her first business as a social media content consultant to talking more about what she was curious about despite the thoughts of "People don't want to hear what I have to say," or "People will think I'm flakey or that I'm loony."
  • Pivoting and worrying about being "off-brand"
  • How she began channeling messages and pivoted again into Akashic Record readings to help with self-love, worthiness, and deconditioning
  • The struggle with what to call herself and what her niche is (can you relate?) and what she did about it
  • Common struggles that hold most people back
  • The fact that you have the desire for something, that means something! Follow it.
  • How she's reframed the word "work"
  • Developing new habits that stick
  • Her rituals around taking care of her mental and spiritual well-being (includes winking at yourself ;) )
  • What steps to take if you feel like there's something more inside of you, but are afraid to do anything about it

Earlier this week, I made the very hard decision to close the Beyond the Book club membership effective this month. Inside this Friday episode I explain more behind the decision, the other factors than went into the final call, share my biggest lessons learned from (finally) starting my membership in hopes you'll learn something too for your own membership idea or any project you may be thinking about.

I recently discovered Carl Lentz on an interview with Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man on YouTube. He's not your typical pastor, so I was curious what he was all about. I learned he was at Justin Bieber's wedding and baptized Kevin Durant and had a book out called Own the Moment. I gobbled it up in a weekend and found so many inspiring and very practical takeaways. In fact, at the end of each chapter he has a "own the chapter" section where he gives a recommended action step to put what you just read into practice.

Carl is the lead pastor at Hillsong East Coast out in NYC, but regardless of how religious you are or not, there's still a ton of value you'll get that will expand your mind, remind you about basic human kindness and love, and inspire you to go after big goals.

A few month's ago I heard Jim Kwik, brain coach and author of Limitless, on a the James Wedmore Minding Your Business podcast. And I'm so glad I did. Today's quote was something he shared on that podcast and one that he talked about in more detail in the book. It's quickly become one of my mantra's and I think you'll appreciate it too.

The book description says that, "Limitless gives people the ability to accomplish more--more productivity, more transformation, more personal success and business achievement--by changing their Mindset, Motivation, and Method." Who doesn't want that?? :)

Back in 2018, I started off the year with Michael Hyatt's Your Best Year Ever: A 5-Step Plan for Achieving Your Most Important Goals. The description talked about, "We all want to live a life that matters. We all want to reach our full potential. But too often we find ourselves overwhelmed by the day-to-day. Our big goals get pushed to the back burner--and then, more often than not, they get forgotten." That very much resonated with me at the time, and still does. Welcome back as we get Season 2 going with a new name and a new look (learn more about why the changes in Episode 48) - I couldn't be more excited to kick things off with this one!

If you've ever been called too emotional, or too sensitive or just "too much" you're going to get so much from this episode with Licensed Counselor and Self-Care Coach, Maegon Renee.

While we typically think of self-care as something we DO for ourselves, Maegon's focus is around caring for our emotions - whether they be happy or hard feelings, we talk about the importance of being aware of them, allowing ourselves to feel them fully, move through them as needed, and to never judge them.

As someone who probably seems happy and positive a lot of the time, while that is true, I also go through periods that are super dark and full of sadness or anger that I historically I didn't want to fully feel, or feel at all (hello Enneagram 7), or just be super embarrassed that I even felt that way. In this episode we get more into why that is the opposite of self-care along with these important topics below:

  • The emotional side of self-care
  • What happens when you feel good about yourself
  • Why you need to shorten your to-do list to just 3-5 items
  • How to ask for help - in YOUR way
  • How to say no (and actually feel good about it)
  • Setting boundaries of all kinds
  • The benefits of stillness (and no, you're not lazy or unproductive when you do this)
  • How to identify emotions beyond happy and sad (and why that even matters)
  • When to reach out for help to process hard emotions
  • What Maegon is learning AND unlearning

If you know someone who could use this episode with Maegon, please share and definitely connect with her over on Instagram at @maegonrenee_co and let her know what you got from this one. I know it means the world to guests to hear from you.

Some things might look a little different from the last time you were here :) In this episode you’ll get the details behind the changes, what to expect moving forward if you want to stick around, the thinking behind it and some thoughts on changing your mind.

Earlier this week, I was watching the Gaia Network that my friend Ashley Mondor (future guest in Season 2 on Akashic Records!) recommended.

There was a series that I had kept seeing ads for from Dr. Joe Dispenza called Rewired, so to unwind a bit before bed I turned it on. The series in general is really good - all about how to change your life by changing your beliefs, thoughts and actions and how to create lasting change.

But that's not what we're getting into this week. During his series, I noticed he unintentionally shared 3 awesome examples of marketing tips that you can take and apply in your own businesses. You'll hear about each of those in this episode along with examples and ideas for implementing yourself.

I also shared a reminder that this Monday, July 27th INSTABrand: A 21 Day Personal Brand Transformation Using the Power of Instagram is opening! I'm super excited about it and if you are at all interested in learning more about how to stand out on Instagram, leverage all it's awesome features and how to grow beyond just using hashtags, I'd love for you to check out the waitlist page and get on it if it feels like it could be what you're looking for!

Sign up for the INSTABrand Waitlist here! https://www.sarahlynnco.com/waitlist

And if we're not already connected, find me over on Instagram (@sarahlynn.co)where I share personal branding and Instagram tips, book recommendations and talk about fun things happening in the world, like Taylor Swift's new album :) -

On today's episode, you'll hear about reframing the idea of being an "influencer" and how by being more influential you can make more of an impact. You'll also hear my most recent run in (pun intended!) with being influenced myself to get back into running again.

In addition to that, I also get into the 4 main causes of resistance when it comes to getting more visible, starting a business, sharing a new idea, or whatever the thing is for you! Three of the four are from Carrie Green's book, She Means Business (cannot recommend this book enough if you're thinking of starting or growing a new business) and one is my own take that I've realized how important is first hand.

If you're good with the C I shared, but realize you may not be moving forward because one of (or all of) the other 3 C's, INSTABrand: A 21 Day Personal Brand Transformation using Instagram is going to help you with each of those! To learn more and be notified when doors open, sign up over on the waitlist at www.sarahlynnco.com/waitlist.

AND starting on Monday (July 20th) at 1pm EST over on Instagram Live, I'm kicking off the 3-part Training - Newbie to Known on Instagram. Over the week, you'll learn 3 strategies to help you move along that path faster. It will give you an idea for my style of teaching, so if you are thinking about joining me inside INSTABrand you can get a feel for it. Even if you're not, but looking for ways to uplevel your Instagram game, come hang out because you're still going to learn helpful strategies you can put to use right away!

As I write this description, I'm listening to Wait for It from Hamilton on repeat. I finally got around to watching it when Disney+ dropped it over July 4th weekend. I know I'm waaaay late to the game, but since watching it, I have fallen into a deep deep dark hole of all things Hamilton - cast interviews, behind the scenes on YouTube, watching White House performances over and over, and all the Jimmy Fallon and podcast interviews with Lin-Manuel I can find. And in all my "research" I have been blown away by the genius of Lin- Manuel. I've taken in so many life lessons from his experiences and have been thinking about how they apply to life and in my own business. So, in this episode I'm sharing 8 of those lessons I've picked up with you, in hopes you also find inspiration and new ideas within them as well.

What about you? What's your favorite Hamilton song? Connect with me over on Instagram (@sarahlynn.co) and let me know! It's hard to pick just one - mine changes almost daily!

In this episode, I also mentioned that Round 2 of INSTABrand: A 21 Day Personal Brand Transformation on Instagram is coming soon! "There is only one purpose for all of life, and that is for you and all that lives to experience fullest glory." - Neale Donald Walsch, Conversations With God

In the Summer Break episode we're going "off the grid" again with this topic on knowing when you're worthy, good enough, and how to know when you've reached success.

Next week, I'm going to be sharing 6 ways to convey the value of your offers on social media in a 3-part Facebook and Instagram Live series, but today I wanted to pull it back a bit and talk about how we think of our value as a human being and what exactly our purpose on Earth here really is. It's a big topic that we could talk about in a lot of different ways, so just scratching the surface here, but thought this was an important concept to bring up.

This has been on my mind for awhile but wan't sure how to go about sharing it. So, today I pulled from one of my key takeaways from my own coaching experience as the client, from the Self-Made movie series on Netflix, and from this book, Conversations With God.

Even if an offer or launch doesn't go over like we hoped, that doesn't mean anything about you as a human being - you are not a failure, you don't suck, and by no means are you not cut out for this. You just got a lesson you needed. I wanted to talk about this because so many times I see people hang their worthiness on how much money they made (or didn't), how many followers they have, or how many comments a post got and we are all so much more than that.

It's important we realize that and bring that knowing into how we show up when we do talk about our offers and business. This episode hopefully will give you some things to think about as you work to do/believe that. <3

Thoughts are real and they have a direct impact on how you feel and how you behave.

You probably already know that though. At least in theory you've heard it around the personal development world a time or two :)

In Daniel Amen's Change Your Brain Change Your Life book, he talks about this concept of ANTs and how to get rid of them.

Wait, what does ANTs mean???

ANTs = Automatic Negative Thoughts

This week on a summer break episode of The Social Scholars Podcast, you'll learn about the 9 types of ANTs so that you can notice them when they come up (because they're not always as obvious as you may think) and how to stop yourself as soon as you become aware.

These are so important to be aware of because letting them run free can steal your happiness and literally make you feel old, fat, depressed, not enough, and have you questioning what you're doing with your life even when you're on the right path!

With this first Summer Break episode, you're going to hear a little about where I'm at in the Black Lives Matter movement, a few of the things I've been doing behind the scenes, resources I've learning from, thoughts on moving forward to make the awareness and action beyond just a black square post, knowing there's still lots more I can do.

Part of that is showing back up on social media to talk about the visibility, personal brand, marketing and social media topics I love talking with you about to help you build your personal brand that not only can help you create more income that you can donate to causes you care about, but also grow your influence and audience so make an impact with your words as well with topics you care about.

So get that started again after some time away, you'll also hear 5 steps you need to have true, sustainable consistency. Three of them don't get talked about enough/at all, and then the last 2 steps are more tangible ideas/tools.

If you have a resource you think I should know about or that's helped you on around the Black Lives Matter movement, please share it with me over on Instagram at @sarahlynn.co.

Sometimes with the numbers of followers so visible at the top of each of our Instagram accounts it can be easy to get caught up in that number instead of the number of sales we're bringing in.

And if we're using social media for business, that is the most important number because you can make sales and run a thriving business without a lot of followers.

I shared the story of one of our Social Scholars FB members selling out her first group coaching program with less than a 1,000 Instagram followers and a pretty new LinkedIn strategy as proof of that.

I've had similar results selling out a 12-person group coaching program, selling one-off masterclasses, and selling a new book club membership using a pretty basic Instagram + FB strategy.

Step one to selling your offers on social media is.... to make offers!

I know it can be scary to put yourself out there and maybe even feel slimy doing it (more on that soon!), but without selling, it's going to be hard to make sales.

Step two then is to refine your sales message so that the people you're most excited about serving, understand exactly what you do, how you help and how their life is going to be better off after buying what you're selling.

And that's what we're going to talk about inside this Live mini-training I hosted today over on my Sarah Lynn Co. Facebook Page!

If you've been posting and creating valuable content for your community for awhile, but the sales aren't quite rolling in like you'd hoped, it might be your value proposition just needs a little pizzazz!

After years of cold calling (and making mistakes, and getting hung up on A LOT and learning on the fly), taking multiple courses on sales, being a part of a coaching group for sales professionals, and reading endless amount of sales books, when you come by to hang out for this training with me, you'll learn 6 ways that I've learned from all the experience about how to convey your value, so that you can start making more sales, helping more people, and creating more change with the gifts, talents and passions you have!

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to selling on social media? Send me a DM over on Instagram (@sarahlynn.co) - I'd love to help and be able to answer in a longer form on a future episode!

Eden Carpenter teaches business owners how to use their Human Design type to align with abundance, purpose and service and in this episode she's teaching us how to get started.

If you've never heard of Human Design you're in the right place! Eden walks through:

Live videos have been shown to have a 148% higher organic reach than any other form of content. Even if that were only half true, wouldn't you be interested in giving it a try? I know most people cringe at the thought of showing up Live - that used to be me, so I 100% understand.

There are so many benefits to it though including:

  • Being able to more intimately connect with your community
  • More quickly build your know, like and trust factor versus only sharing written posts
  • Less time consuming that trying to pre-record a "perfect" video - raw and unrehearsed is what people expect on a Live
  • Build excitement for a challenge, launch or product release
  • Facebook is prioritizing Live video right now
  • ...which means you're able to drive more traffic to your Biz Page for ads and lower your costs!

In this week's episode 31, Tiffany Lee ByMaster aka Coach Glitter visited our Social Scholars Community Group and recorded live inside there and on my Sarah Lynn Co. Facebook Page were she gave us the scoop on where to start with live video, explaining why Facebook Business Pages are the place to be, and how by doing both you're setting your business up to more easily scale!

If you're ready to get more visible and are curious how live video can help make a big impact on your personal brand or small business, Coach Glitter is hosting an incredible 3-part live video training over the next two weeks. In this Cliff Notes Episode, you're going to learn how to put together a powerful testimonial that not only benefits you, but benefits the person reading it! And because you'll have some structure around it, vs. just asking for customers and clients to write you a testimonial, you'll make their lives easier too.

Not convinced you even want to spend time getting them?

In an article on Boast, some pretty compelling stats where shared on the power of testimonials:

  • 88% of consumers trust online testimonials and reviews as much as recommendations from friends or family
  • 70% of people trust reviews and recommendations from strangers
  • Using customer testimonials regularly can generate approximately 62% more revenue
  • Customer testimonials placed alongside more expensive items increased conversion rates 380%
  • On average, testimonials on sales pages increase conversions by 34%

Now that you're on board, check out this episode with the 3 parts that make up an effective testimonial, with specific questions to ask in each section.

Welcome to a NEW type of episode that you'll start hearing occasionally weaved into the regular guest expert and quick tip episodes line up! We'll be going "off the grid" (like the Instagram grid :))) and uncovering why, despite knowing all the tips, getting all the best advice, and hearing all the most awesome success stories, we still don't take action and move forward on the things we most want to do.

Instead, we'll continually think about it or take action on behind the scenes projects that don't involve us putting ourselves out there - like writing pages of notes for the perfect offer, working for weeks or even months on our website, creating pretty graphics in Canva, and buying the mic for the podcast that we have yet to hit record on.

There's something going on under the surface more than just having all the information for what to do and that's what we'll be exploring in these!

Today's episode is based on a quote I came across reading, Julia Carson's book, The Artist's Way:

"More often audacity, not talent, makes one person an artist and another a shadow artist."

A shadow artist being someone that hides out in the shadows, never putting themselves or their work out there.

Sure you don't get judged, but you also miss out on helping the people who do love and need what you have to offer.

Grant Cardone also has a quote I love and have as the first line in my LinkedIn profile, "Best known is better than best."

How good is that??

Best is so subjective anyway, but let's say you were the best but never stepped out and got visible - didn't put your opinions, thoughts, and offers out to the world. What would it matter if you were the best? It's the person that is best known, who is putting themselves out there despite not being perfect or ready, that's going to be able to make the biggest impact.

This week's episode is a fun one because I get to interview one of my coaches and mentors, Tyson Sharpe, joining us from over in Melbourne!

He's an Emotional Fitness Coach, Host of the Awaken Your Business Podcast, and Creator of the thriving Facebook Community, Connect, Contribute and Collaborate.

I first got connected with Tyson to help me get clear on what I was actually offering that my community needed and what I wanted to be offering.

However, what I've learned from working with him goes so much deeper than that and has shifted my perspective on success and results massively and I wanted him to share some of that with you as you go along your own business journey.

In the episode you'll hear from Tyson on:

  • His biggest tip for new coaches and consultants
  • What to do first before a big decision
  • How to know what to offer your clients
  • How to know when you’re filling a void vs. fulfilling a calling
  • Is there a right or wrong way to do something?
  • How to learn that to feel successful without the results
  • His unique ideas for building his Facebook Group in a genuine and exciting way (despite being told he shouldn’t!)
  • How being open and vulnerable rather than perfect and always together on his Lives has helped him be more connected with his community

Be sure and connect with Tyson over in his Facebook Group and check out his podcast, Awaken Your Business.

*SEEN DURING QUARANTINE***

Calling business owners who ready to step out from behind their logos, inspirational quotes, and product photos to build (or grow!) an intentional and influential personal brand to compliment the business they've been building.d

This is for you ONLY if you are feeling like you're ready to use this time to build and grow your online image using simple social media and PR strategies to stand out in your niche and attract the right people - a.k.a. you're ready to be SEEN DURING QUARANTINE a.k.a. It's social distancing, not socially disappearing!

This is how I normally help in my 90-day marketing mentorship, but with so much up in the air (juggling homeschooling, cooking more meals for more people, walking our dogs more than ever before, and just trying to remember what day it is), I've created a Cliff Notes version of the mentorship into a 90-MINUTE 1:1 coffee date over Zoom so that you can still get an influential online image up and growing in the time it's going to take you to binge two Tiger King episodes.

We'll work together to either launch or grow the brand of YOU OR launch a new offer you've been working on in 3 easy steps:

1️⃣To make sure we get the most out of our time together, you'll get a 30-minute pre-call fun video + exercise to help you start to nail your marketing message + content ideas for days.

2️⃣ We'll have our 90-minute call over Zoom where we'll go through your notes from #1, apply the 4 stages of selling on social and 8 pieces of an awesome offer to your specific situation, so that you walk away with a 90-day game plan for how to implement it all.

3️⃣ So that, your plan gets off to a good start, I'll be available for a full week post-call to get all your Q's answered.

To get yours scheduled or to learn more, send me on Instagram @sarahlynn.co or email at hello@sarahlynnco.com!

It's human nature to see and hear the world through stories. We've been doing it from the beginning, both hearing stories and telling them.

It's hard for us to making meaning out of just data, stats and facts without the container of a story to hold them in.

When we use storytelling in our marketing and sales content whether it be on social media or on sales calls, we can start to:

better connect with our audience be more relatable be more likable be more memorable  and stand out to the right people

Today, you're going to learn 7 types of stories you can use in your next post or podcast guest interview and the key ingredient all them need to have in order to stick.

Developing  Signature Stories and using them in specific situations is something we cover in my 90-day marketing mentorship because it's that important. With life up in the air for a lot of us and schedules full of juggling a new way of life, I'm doing something special for the month of April called "Getting Seen During the Quarantine" where we'll connect for just 90-minutes on a high-level 90-day plan to get clarity and an implementation around your signature stories, marketing messaging, and overall offer promotion and launch to help you and your services get seen and stay visible while being #healthyathome. If getting more visible to reach and help more people or if you have a new product you want to launch soon, "Getting Seen During the Quarantine" will help you do just that inside a recorded Zoom call we can knock out together in an afternoon.  Direct message me on Instagram at @sarahlynn.co or email me at hello@sarahlynnco.com if you're remotely interested and simply say, "tell me more" and I'll send you additional info!

Paige Cole is a stripper business coaches that teaches dancers how to maximize their hustle in and out of the club.

I wanted to share Paige's experience and success with you because just a little over two short years ago, she was working to build an Amazon Private Labeling coaching business. She's pivoted a few a times, each time leading her closer to where she is now and each time picking up valuable lessons along the way.

Eventually, she embraced her 11 year stripping career, instead of trying to hide it, and came out of the "stripper closet." After making a few hundred dollars trying to serve a huge audience of "spiritual entrepreneurs" when Paige niched down to strippers, her business exploded. Just last month, Paige closed a product launch with $50,000 in sales.

The inspiring things about Paige's story that I know you're going to love is not only the power of niching down, but also the importance of taking action and allowing clarity to come from that. Instead of trying to figure out and think about what she wanted to do, she tried a lot of things. What didn't work out she learned from and finally led her to the success she's having now.

I also loved how she decided to embrace her past instead of being embarrassed by it. There might be experiences you have as well that you've hidden, but that could end up being exactly what the right people need to know about and hear from you. <3

Enjoy this one with Paige and definitely connect with her over on Instagram @the.paige.cole to let her know your biggest takeaway!

If you've been thinking about a podcast for awhile now, but things like what mic to use, what you should name it, how to create an intro or what your thumbnail should look like have been tripping you up, this episode is for you!

Inside today's solocast you'll hear about my personal experience creating, launching and sustaining a podcast (for at least 3 months anyway :)). Full disclosure I am not a podcasting expert by any means. The information in here is simply to share what I used to get started and getting to my first 1,500 downloads and 82 subscribers.

I still have a lot to learn myself, but I'm sharing what tools, strategies and mindset I took on to finally get my first episode recorded and out to the world.

The topics are broken down into:

  • Coming up with your idea and name
  • How to think about your podcast for future motorization
  • Tech and Tools
  • Recording an Intro/Outro
  • Naming your episodes and writing shownotes
  • Launching your podcast
  • Sharing your episodes once they're recorded

This week's episode was recorded weeks ago, before the world changed and businesses were forced to close their doors. However, the lessons learned, experiences shared, and advice given for standing out online by CycleBar West Omaha owners, Emily Harbourne and Dwight Coulter is still just as relevant.

Inside this interview, you'll hear how Emily and Dwight used the power of storytelling to not only stand out online, but create a thriving community from scratch that has now more than ever turned into raving fans and loyal customers.

You'll learn how how they both made the leap into opening up a studio together, the mindset that kept them going, and a super fun behind the scenes story of how they met and how their love for each other and the CycleBar brand.

By getting creative, putting down the standard stock photos and motivational quotes and showing their faces and stories as the owners and people behind the new studio, they were able to open a brand new studio with over 400 members and have other CycleBar studios across the country ask how they were having such success.

You'll find that out as well when you listen to this week's interview along with:

  • How business owners can crush it on social media by stepping out from behind stock photos
  • How to stand out when there's others that do the same thing you're doing
  • How to be resourceful
  • How betting on themselves helped them take a scary leap
  • The magic that can happen when you share your behind the scenes
  • How to never feel like you're selling anything again (but still bring in new clients and get paid)
  • Where social media fits into your overall marketing ecosystem and customer experience

To see real examples of the strategies that Emily and Dwight talk about be sure and following along with their studio:

Wow, how much has changed since we talked last week???

I know our lives seemed to change almost overnight and we're all living in some very uncertain times right now.

How you choose to navigate it is 100% up to you and what feels right for YOU - feeling extra creative and productive? Embrace it! Feeling scared and overwhelmed? Don't try and be productive right now. Take care of yourself. There's a lot of advice right now, but I hope you are paying attention to what your body is telling you and listen to what it needs.

In this episode you're going to hear how 3 other business owners are navigating this situation for themselves, their families, and for their team members and communities. Nothing in here is meant to be advice you need to feel the pressure of following, but rather ideas and inspirations for what others are doing to stay calm and positive and how you might be able to incorporate what resonates with you.

I know Del, Paul, and Winifred would love to hear from you with what got from this panel interview so don't hesitate to reach out to connect and let them know!

Dana Evans works with people of all ages and backgrounds to help them do the same thing - uncover their inner voice and quiet their inner critic, so that they can live a life of more fulfillment and alignment, knowing that they are aligned with the work they do, the relationships they're in and the person they want to be.

And in this episode she's going to help us do the same.

While this isn't a specific social media topic, it is an important one.

Maybe the most important one yet because once we can tune in to that inner voice and learn to trust it, the answers to the questions we're asking around marketing, our offers, our business, and the next right step start to become crystal clear. We'll no longer be looking for the answer to those big questions outside of us, but instead begin to get the answers from within. That's where we can finally start to do the things that are right for us, instead of simply doing what's expected from us.

This is a little longer of an episode, but with what's going on the world right now, I can't think of a better topic to cover than how to tune in to ourselves for guidance, calmness, and alignment in this time of uncertainty.

Thinking of you this week. <3

When you listen, you'll learn the 5 big benefits of using market research calls, which really is just a fancy way of saying picking up the phone and talking to your people! :)

Janice shares the why and the HOW in this episode of doing marketing research calls along with the success she's experienced by making the time to talk with her follower community.

AND how you can get started by doing the same with your community!

Gemma Bonham-Carter started her online business journey as a hobby blogger sharing her home renovations.

After she had some success with it, people started asking her what she was doing and could she teach them.

Without knowing that Amy Porterfield or any other digital product guru existed yet for her to compare herself too, she took on the new challenge and started helping others build their own digital products and online businesses.

And you can do that too.

Even if your market is overly saturated. Even if there are other experts teaching the same thing you are.

In the episode, Gemma shares how we can shift our perspective around comparison, perfectionism, and not feeling ready enough, so that you can start helping the people you are most excited to help.

You'll also get a sneak peek under her social media hood and learn:

  • Her Instagram Posts vs. Instagram Stories strategy
  • The types of captions she shares and where the content comes from
  • What graphics are getting shared the most right now
  • What types of posts haven't worked for her
  • How she thinks of her Facebook Group
  • What she shares on her Facebook Business Page
  • How she hired help for her social media strategy and a look at their work flow together
  • How to talk about your freebie on social media so that you're moving people onto platforms you own (your website, email list, etc.)

In this episode you’ll learn another option outside of Instagram hashtags, but can also be applicable for connecting with relevant people over on LinkedIn and Facebook!

In episode 013., Winifred Costello shared her alternative strategy to using hashtags that we're going to focus on and get into a big more detail in today's Cliff Notes quick tip episode!

Hashtags are used to bring more relevant followers to your social media communities, but with most people's ideal client not always being the most social media savvy, using hashtags might not be working. The tip that Winifred shared gives you a more likely chance of connecting with those relevant people and bringing them into your community.

Having followers for the sake of followers will not grow your business. You need people in your community that care about what you have to say and offer and excited to engage with and share what you have to say.

This alternative gives you a better chance of finding those people. You will need to know a few things about your ideal customer, but that's it! Looking forward to hanging out with you in this!

Anna is a mom of 2 and an OR nurse by night. When she's not taking care of her kids or patients, she's taking care of the members of her very engaged Facebook Group that teaches others how to do the same.

She previously used Facebook Groups to build a 6-figure fitness business, but once she realized her heart wasn't in it anymore, she made the decision to focus on where her heart really was - building communities.

With Facebook dedicating so much attention and resources into building up the Facebook Group platform, it's been a hot topic among business owners with how to get started and how to build one of value.

In this week's interview with Anna we get into all of that including:

who they're a good fit for (and who they're not) why consider starting a Facebook how to know  what to post in your Group vs. Facebook Page (she gives the best analogy!) how to attract members to your group and then what to do once they're there why you shouldn't just share tips and content  how lurkers don't engage still contribute to your group what do know about your analytics  how to get members to connect with each other  the one thing your Facebook cover image MUST have how to leverage your personal Facebook profile to drive traffic to your group how to sell inside your own group how to use your FB group to actually help you build your offers how to capture members' email address in compliance with email regulations what to ask in the member approval 3 question section ...and SO much more!

A few months ago, I hosted a private Instagram group for the members of a 21-day group training program I ran. In this episode, I share why I chose to host the group over on Instagram vs. Facebook or a community forum on a website, who else it might be a good fit for, how I set mine up, what content I shared where, and also some of the things that didn't work so well.

I'm sure there's so many more creative things you could do with this that I haven't even thought of so I hope by listening to this episode you get it inspired to take what works and add in your own twist!

She's also a social media genius when it comes to sharing engaging content and building a community online.

In this episode, Winifred breaks down:

  • her 3 part content formula for the type of content she shares on social
  • the copywriting framework she uses for each caption to ensure it has an intention and a call to action
  • the hack she discovered for connecting with more of her ideal client (and its not just hashtags)
  • how she ensures she's talking to her local audience for her brick and mortar business and her online audience and creating meaningful connection with both

"Everything I ever feared people would think of me, they already have. Yet here I am." - Humble the Poet

Fear can be a gift.

It's what helps keep us safe - rushing adrenaline and cortisol through our body to make us alert and get out of a dangerous situation.

That kind of fear typically just lasts a short amount of time though.

What about the chronic fears we all deal with? Us humans carry around all these other fears despite not actually being in danger. Fears like:

  • Fear of failure.
  • Fear of rejection.
  • Fear of embarrassment.
  • Fear of what others will think.
  • Fear of change.
  • Fear of getting it wrong.
  • Fear of losing everything.
  • Fear of getting visible.

I read awhile back that these types of fears should more accurately be described as phobias, which are defined as an irrational fear that is greater than any actual threat.

Unfortunately, we let these fears control us and dictate how we live our lives. We play small, play along and blend in to avoid these "dangers."

I hear from people who "just aren't good on social media" but a bit deeper of a look usually shows they simply have a fear around getting visible and putting themselves out there to be judged and potentially fail.

If you've every struggled with this, you're clearly not alone. We're all there in some way.

But, what are you missing out on by holding on to this fear?

In this episode, we get into what your missing out on, along with:

  • accepting the fear will never go away
  • learning to instead have a respectful relationship with it (tangible tip, not just fluff here)
  • what jumping out of a plane has to do with you starting to show more on social media
  • the not-so secret, secret to converting more on social is actually putting offers out
  • what you can learn from the rejection of a travel tech company's request to 7 investors
  • how to channel some Ronda Rousey vibes next time these fears/phobias come up

Welcome to the very first episode of The Social Scholars Podcast!

I'm your host, Sarah Lynn and I am beyond excited to be hanging out with you on your walks, grocery shopping, commuting - anywhere you're going! - talking about one of my favorite topics in the world - social media!

The purpose of this podcast is to help you get more visible, look like a pro while you do it, and to build an engaged follower community by leveraging the power of social media.

You'll be hearing from me, specific social media experts, and other business owners just like you who have found a platform and a plan that's working from them. Because I've realized there really is no one way to do something, you're going to learn from a variety of business owners in all kinds of industries to:

  1. see what's possible
  2. show that you really can make anything work
  3. give you new ideas you haven't thought of before

This is new for me too, so I'll be trying out different types of episodes as well to find out what is most helpful for you. For now, you can expect to hear:

  • Guest expert interviews - learn from the pros AND a variety of business owners sharing what's working for them
  • Office Hours Q&A Episodes - click HERE to leave me a voice message to be used on the show!
  • Social Studies Episodes - Trends, stats, studies around marketing and communication
  • Off the Grid Episodes - mindset topics maybe indirectly related to social media but so important for showing up
  • Cliffs Notes Episodes - quick tangible tips you can put into action right away

I also wanted to be sure we kicked off this podcast by setting the stage around what an effective social media strategy overview looks like and what might be missing from yours, if you're frustrated from not seeing an ROI. After this episode you will be able to identify where your holes might be and then keep listening each week to learn how to fill those and finally make social media start working for you!

See you on the other side!
