The Son of God entered the world as a baby who was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. Immanuel. God with us. But his purpose was much greater than the incarnation. Much greater than his perfect example. Greater than his miracles and teaching.

He is risen! He is risen indeed!
Matthew 28:5-7But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”
Eleven men sat in a darkened room. Along with the darkness was a mixture of hopelessness and confusion. All their dreams and hopes were bound in grave clothes, lying cold and still in a dark tomb.
They waited in the darkened room. The doors were bolted shut. Certainly, those who had killed Jesus would be coming for them. Then finally, the deafening silence was broken as every cough and creaking chair echoed throughout the room. The shuffling feet and the heavy sighs served as reminders of the tension. But then…in an instant…he was there! In the room! In the light of the flickering candles, he showed them all the proof they needed. His hands. His side. He was alive!! Every word he had spoken was true! Every promise fulfilled! Death conquered, forever!
Today many live in a darkened world. Living lives of fear, confusion, discontentment, and despair. Searching for meaning and significance…in all the wrong places. Occupying themselves with busy days. Losing sleep over things that matter little. Losing time over things that matter most. And all the while, he is there. Have you seen the risen Savior in your darkened world? He is there! Follow Jesus in the resurrection of new life!
Lord Jesus, thank you for your sacrificial death for me. Heavenly Father, thank you for raising your Son from the dead. Holy Spirit, empower me to live a life worthy of my Savior and resurrected Lord. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Friday was the day of the cross. We call it Good Friday. But from Mary’s viewpoint, “good” was not the word she would use.
John 19:25-27…Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
It was a long way from Nazareth to that Bethlehem stable…especially long for a woman in the last days of her pregnancy. No doubt she felt every jolt of the rough terrain on the seventy-mile trip. And then they arrived to find every room occupied. They could only find a cave where animals were kept. It was not the best place to birth a child, but by that point, Mary was not picky. It was warm and dry, and the baby was on the way. What emotions did she feel that night? She was a young girl holding her firstborn. Surely there were tears of joy…and wonder as she reflected on the visit from the angel. She was a virgin holding her baby! She felt the little heart beating against her chest and a mysterious wonder beating in her heart.
It was a long way from that Bethlehem stable to the cross. Most mothers could not bear watching their son be crucified, but Mary could not leave. She longed to hold him. She longed to wipe the blood from his beaten face. She longed to give him a drink. She longed to comfort him, but Jesus was beyond her reach. She cried tears of agony. Her son was on a cross. She watched his chest expand as he labored to breathe. She felt a crushing pain in her heart. Finally, mercifully, the end came.
It was a long way from heaven to the cross. But there hung God in the flesh. Beaten. Spit upon. Mocked. Flogged. Stripped. Crucified. A “kingly crown” of thorns mockingly thrust onto his head. God loved us so much that he sent his only Son to go through that awful death in order to pay sin’s penalty. But death could not keep him there. And now the resurrected Lord brings his cross work to meet you wherever you are. Rich…and empty. Poor…and needy. Successful…and searching. Fallen…and struggling to get up. Jesus meets you where you are with his once-for-all-time sacrifice…and carries you all the way to eternity.
If you have not trusted in the completed work of Jesus, please pray this prayer:
Lord Jesus, I cannot imagine the pain of the cross, but I know you died for me. Thank you for paying the penalty for my sins. I am sorry for them. I seek your forgiveness. I want to stand clean before you. I trust in you as the risen Savior. Thank you for accepting me as your child. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Lazarus was four days dead. When Jesus said, “Lazarus, come out,” the dead man responded. Lazarus stood up and shuffled out of the tomb. His resurrected body still showed signs of death—strips of linen wrapped around his body and a burial cloth around his face.
John 11:44The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Then Jesus instructed those with him to take off the grave clothes and let Lazarus begin to live again. Notice that Jesus did what only he could do—give life. Then he let others do what they could do—take off the grave clothes. I find that amazing and instructive.
We are dead in our sins. Only Jesus can breathe life into our hearts. Then he gives us the invitation to help others take off their grave clothes of guilt, unworthiness, legalism, pride, and baggage of the past. What a tremendous privilege. Jesus raises the spiritually dead and then allows us to set the new believer free!
Lord Jesus, thank you for raising us from spiritual death. And thank you for giving us the privilege of taking off the grave clothes. Thank you for the amazing partnership you allow us to have in developing other believers. In your name. Amen.

Come out! Those are the words Jesus spoke to a man who was dead. Here’s the account in John 11:43.
John 11:43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.”
Lazarus was dead and buried. He had been in the grave for four days. Jesus directed some men in the crowd to take away the stone sealing the tomb. Then he prayed out loud so the people would know that his Father was working through him.
Now it was time for a miracle. In a loud voice, Jesus called, “Lazarus, come out!” The same power that spoke the world into existence spoke life into the dead man’s body. Someone has said that it is a good thing Jesus directed his life-giving call to “Lazarus,” otherwise, every dead person would have walked out of their tomb.
And one day . . . every dead person who knows Jesus will walk out of the tomb. One day Jesus will again give a loud call. He will come down from heaven “with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first” (1 Thess. 4:16). Our eternal spirits will join our resurrected bodies and meet the Lord in the air to be with him forever! Each of us will have our “Lazarus” moment.
Lord Jesus, thank you for this promise of resurrection. Thank you for the certainty of spending eternity with you. Thank you for the power of your life-giving call. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Hurt. Disappointment. Anger. Confusion. Fear. Mary was probably feeling all those emotions following the death of her brother Lazarus. She made her way to Jesus, fell at his feet, and let him know exactly what was on her mind. “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:32). Those words were spoken with tears running down her cheeks and between the loud sobs of grief.
John 11:33When Jesus saw [Mary] weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.
Jesus knows everything from start to finish. He knew that in a short time, Lazarus would be raised, and Mary would be crying tears of joy! But Jesus always engages with us right where we are. He was intensely moved and distressed by Mary’s pain.
Jesus knows that all things will end well for those who follow him. One day we will pass from death to life and enjoy him forever. But that doesn’t keep him from engaging in your pain today. Jesus offers us a future, and he works in our present. He sympathizes with our weaknesses and is there to meet the crying need of our hearts.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the promise of eternity. And thank you for meeting us right where we are today. Thank you for walking through every challenge with us. In your name, we pray. Amen.

Jesus has made a way to escape death, to never die. He first gave that promise to a woman grieving the loss of her brother. Today we begin following Jesus to the cross. As Jesus entered the Jerusalem area for the last time, he performed a significant miracle just outside of town. This miracle centered around a man named Lazarus—who was dead and buried. Let’s consider Jesus’ words to Martha, one of the dead man’s sisters.
John 11:25-26Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
Martha met up with Jesus as he approached the city (Mary, Lazarus’ other sister, stayed home. We’ll consider her interaction with Jesus tomorrow). Martha didn’t hide her feelings. She knew that Jesus had power over sickness, so she openly poured out her emotions, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
When Jesus told her that Lazarus would rise again, Martha thought Jesus was consoling her with comforting theology—the resurrection of the dead on the last day. Then Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life.” He was not just a miracle worker! He possessed in his person the eternal power to ensure that no one would ever have to die!
The promise of Jesus is eternal life…starting today. Trusting in him alone as our Savior allows us to escape death. Sure, our bodies wear out and stop functioning (Lazarus died twice!), but through Jesus, we have the promise that death has no power over us. We simply pass from life, as we know it, to eternal life with the Lord.
Lord Jesus, thank you for taking the sting out of death. Thank you for dying so that we could live. Thank you for the promise that one day we will pass from this life to eternal life. Thank you for being there to lead us home. In your name, we pray. Amen.

Sometimes we have problems with the plan—God’s plan. We misunderstand what he is up to. That’s what happened to the disciples.
John 11:11After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.”
The disciples had two problems with Jesus going to wake up Lazarus. First, they thought Jesus was talking about natural sleep. They said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” So, Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died.”
The second problem the disciples had with Jesus going to wake up Lazarus was the location. Lazarus lived just a few miles from Jerusalem. The last time they were in that area, the Jews tried to stone Jesus. The trip back would be dangerous. Hear the frustration in Thomas’ voice when he responds by saying to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him” (John 11:16).
Sometimes we have problems with God’s plan. We misunderstand what he is up to. We fear the danger. But Jesus’ plan is always better than ours. The trip back to Jerusalem was the beginning of his journey to the cross. Trust him. Whatever Jesus is doing in your life is for your good…even if you don’t understand all the details.
Father, I want to take matters into my own hands. Help me to wait on you. Help me know and trust that your plan is always for my good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Have you ever felt like Jesus was holding out on you? Check out today’s passage.
John 11:5-6Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
Time out! Today’s passage says that Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, but when Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed put. That’s curious. Don’t you think Jesus should have rushed to the scene and healed Lazarus? With Jesus, there is always a bigger plan.
Jesus was waiting for Lazarus to die. Healing demonstrated his power over sin and sickness, but days before the cross, raising a dead man to life would demonstrate his power over death. He was preparing the disciples for his resurrection.
You may feel like Jesus is holding out on you. You may feel like he is staying away during your time of need. I don’t know Jesus’ plan for you; I just know that his plan is bigger than yours and mine. Trust him.
Father, I pray for the person who feels like you are holding out on them. Remind us today that you have a great plan. Help us to trust you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The early followers of Jesus misunderstood. They wanted a better temporal life. Jesus came to deliver eternal life. Subsequently, many of the disciples stopped following Jesus.
John 6:66-69
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
After Jesus fed the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two small fish, a group of people became intent on following him. They wanted to be with Jesus for a sermon and supper. Jesus confronted their motives, and upon explaining his mission, many “turned back and no longer walked with him.”
When the large group of wannabe disciples walked away, Jesus questioned those who had left everything to follow him. In today’s passage, he asks, “Do you want to go away as well?” Their spokesman, Simon Peter, made it clear that they had no place else to go. He confessed that only Jesus had the “words of eternal life.”
This statement by Peter is piercing, isn’t it? Even when obedience is hard, even when the journey is painful, even when we don’t understand, even when the nights are dark and long, there is no one else to turn to, and there is no other place to go. Only Jesus has the words of eternal life.
Lord Jesus, you alone hold the words of eternal life. Your presence is the only place of encouragement and peace. Thank you for holding us close with your strong embrace, even when we feel like running away. In your name, we pray. Amen.

Strong and courageous. That is the call on every Christian parent. We need to stand firm and resolute in forming the hearts and minds of our children. If we don’t, there are plenty of people standing in a long line who want to control the next generation. Check out today’s passage.
Joshua 1:9Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
In 1933, the Great Depression affected the daily lives of every American. The people, looking for hope, had elected a new president. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who well understood the challenges that faced our nation. “Only a foolish optimist,” he said, “can deny the dark realities of the moment.” In his inaugural address, Roosevelt didn’t mince words. He began his now-famous speech by addressing the fear that permeated our country.
This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror, which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.
Parents, we live in a sinful world. Saturated with sin, this world is not the way it’s supposed to be. We cannot “deny the dark realities.” However, this is not the time to retreat. More than ever, we need parents who are strong and courageous, and willing to be the parent. Today is the day to advance!
Father, you know what causes fear in each one of us. Help us deal with our fears today. Help us to be strong and courageous. May we face those things that terrify and discourage us with your promise that you are our God and that you will be with us wherever we go. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Many Christian homes are filled with books on parenting. The books address everything from discipline to college decisions. Most of the books are good as far as they go, but there is one Book that must be on the top of the pile. Honestly, we would be better served if we would put down all the other books and pick up “The Book”.
Joshua 1:8This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
God’s inspired Word is his love letter to us, revealing everything we need to know about him and about ourselves. Bible reading must be a part of our daily schedule. The Bible is God-breathed.
The discernment and wisdom needed to guide a child into young adulthood are beyond our natural skill set. Parenting demands that the Holy Spirit work through us as we read Scripture. Only in God’s Word will we find the message that changes us from the inside out so we can mentor our children from the outside in.
Father, thank you for your Word. Forgive us for taking it for granted. Forgive us for not spending enough time reading it. Help us develop the foundational spiritual habit of reading it every day so that we can know and follow your instruction; and so that we can enjoy your success. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

“It’s time to grow up and get serious about your walk with Christ.” Those are the words that parenting shouts at us. It’s no longer just about you (it never was!). Every parent takes on a heavy responsibility, and with that should come humility. Our gut churns with a farrago of emotions that range from excitement to downright fear. Every parent can relate to Joshua’s feelings in the opening chapter of this book.
Joshua 1:5No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.
For years Joshua had served under Moses, the larger-than-life leader who led Israel out of slavery. Joshua was a military leader and one of the twelve spies who had gone into the promised land under cover. Moses mentored him … now Moses was gone. Knowing the emotions of Joshua’s heart, God promised his enduring presence.
God extends the same promise to every parent. The job is bigger than us but not bigger than God. He will never leave you. He will never forsake you. Enjoy his presence and stand firm in his strength.
Father, thank you for the promise of your enduring presence. If you are with us and for us, then who can ever stand against us?! We thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.

God makes his light to shine on us. I love the concept, but what does that mean? We have been using Psalm 118 this week as a guide for praying for our children. So, let’s wrap up our time by asking God to shine his light on them. Our prayer will explain what this powerful truth means.
Psalm 118:27The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us.
Heavenly Father,
Thank you, God, for making your light shine on my children (name their names).
Shine your light on their hearts…let them see their sin and turn to you.Shine your light on their path…let them see the right road to travel.Shine your light on their temptations…let them see the way to escape.Shine your light on their weaknesses…show them their desperate need for you.Shine your light on their failures…reveal the hard lessons.Shine your light on their successes…let them see that you bring about each one.Shine your light on their education…let them find your calling.Shine your light on their friendships…let them find iron-sharpeners.Shine your light on their relationships…let them see the rewards of purity.Shine your light on their marriages…let them love and honor their spouse.Shine your light on their vocation…let them see how to minister at work.Shine your light on their disappointment…let them see your encouragement.Shine your light on their loneliness…let them see your presence.Shine your light on their doubts…reveal that you can be trusted.Shine your light on their sin…let them see the way back home.Shine your light on their fear…let them find your strength and comfort.Shine your light on their lives…let them always follow hard after you.

What does success look like? What does God’s success look like? There are often two different answers to those questions. Our success doesn’t always look like God’s success. But his “win” is the only success that matters.
This week we are using Psalm 118 as a guide to praying for our kids and grandkids. Today’s passage is about God’s success.
Psalm 118:25Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success!
Success. We all want our children to have it. Early on, we brag about the goals little Tommy scored in grasshopper soccer. We paste bumper stickers on our cars with the words, “My child is an honor student at Braggadocio Middle School.” (I always wanted a bumper sticker that read, “My child is a regular kid!”). And we tout the success of the past year in Christmas letters filled with exotic travel, businesses breaking into the Fortune 100, and a long list of kid’s awards that fill up the first three pages. When I read those letters, I look at Lori and say, “We are failures!” Could it be that the psalmist had a different idea about success?
Father,I pray that you will grant your success to my children (say their names).
Give them success in the lessons of losing.Give them success in the humility of winning.Give them success in serving others.Give them success in befriending the lonely.Give them success in caring for the unfortunate.
Give them success in choosing friends.Give them success at using time wisely.Give them success in reading your Word daily.Give them success in prayer.
Give them success in the pain of failure.Give them success in the aura of achievement.Give them success in obeying your Word.Give them success in repentance.
Give them success at following hard after you.Give them success at using the gifts you’ve given them.Give them success in standing for you…even if it means standing alone.

Do you ever feel like you are being pushed hard? Feel like you are falling? Happens to us all and to our children. This week we are using Psalm 118 as a guide to praying for our children (and grandchildren). Today’s verses speak to the real-life experience of being pushed hard.
Real life presents real circumstances. Our children will be pushed hard. Pushed by friends who are not always kind, by teachers with an agenda, and by philosophies of our culture that contradict the truth of Scripture. Being pushed hard will continue when our kids have kids of their own. Let’s pray today that our children will turn to the source of strength when they are being pushed hard.
Psalm 118:13-14I was pushed hard, so that I was falling, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
Heavenly Father,
Life will come with its hard pushes. Our children will be pushed back and pushed around by situations beyond their control. They will know what it means to stumble. Many times, they will be about to fall. And most of the time, I won’t be there to catch them, but you will always be right by their side.
Father, be their strength against the influencing crowd. Be their help against life’s inevitable challenges. Defend them against the strongest temptation in their weakest moments. Let them know that they are never alone. May this confession always be on their lips: “He has become my salvation.”

So…where do you place your trust? In man? In government? In a human system? At the end of the day, all human efforts will fail, and all systems will falter. This week, using Psalm 118 as our guide, we are praying for our children (and grandchildren). Today let’s pray that they always place their trust in the living God.
Psalm 118:8-9It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
We are dependent people, forced to trust others. Every time I open a bag of jumbo cracked pepper sunflower seeds (my new favorite), I must trust that a “cracked” person didn’t apply the cracked pepper! We must trust others, but we can’t trust in others. When we trust in others to provide what only God can fulfill, we will always be disappointed and live in a dangerous spot.
Let’s pray that our children seek refuge in the Lord.
Heavenly Father,
(Name your children) are surrounded by influencers today. Teachers, advisors, coaches, and friends are pouring into their lives. Help my children to know the difference between trusting a person and trusting in a person.
May you always be their refuge. May you be the place they run to for safety and protection. May they find acceptance and love in their relationship with you. May you be the One they cling to when life is kicking up a storm.
I pray for our married children (name them). Help each couple have a deep love and commitment to one other, and help them guard against trying to find in their spouse what can only be found in you. Only you can meet the deepest longing of their hearts.

When I understand that God is on my side, fear and dread are driven away. We all want to live with a “God on my side” confidence. And we want our children to do the same. This week we are using Psalm 118 as our guide to praying for our children. Let’s pray they will know and experience this promise that God is always on their side.
Psalm 118:6-7The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
Left to ourselves, we are defenseless, fearful, and alone. There is no protection in sight. But then we open our spiritual eyes to see the One standing right beside us, and he is always standing by our side. He drives away fear. He protects us. He is always “my helper.”
Heavenly Father,
Please be with (name your children). Help them know that you are with them. Allow them to feel the comfort of your presence. Give them the assurance that you are on their side. Let them know that whatever is standing in their way is no match for you.
Take away their fear. Help them cast all their anxiety on you. Give them the strength to heave it on you like a farmer throws a heavy sack of grain into the bed of his pickup truck. Remind them that you are the Defeater of every enemy, even the last enemy. Meet them in the classroom…dorm room…office…hospital room. Calm the beating of their heart. Quiet their soul in your presence.
In Jesus’ name.Amen.

This week we are focusing on prayers for parents using Psalm 118 as our guide. Today’s prayer is about freedom. Don’t you want your children to live in the freedom Jesus provides?
Psalm 118:5Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free.
Stress is not foreign to the human condition. From timed multiplication tests to SATs, our children will know the stress of exams. From the betrayal of friends to broken hearts, our kids will know that sometimes people hurt each other. From college applications to job interviews, anxiety does backflips in our stomachs. But the believer is never alone or helpless in distress.
Heavenly Father,My children experience stressful situations each day as they go about their daily lives. Today’s challenge may seem small tomorrow, but it’s big today. Sometimes the stress in their lives seems overwhelming…at least to me. Help me teach them, by words and example, to call on you, the Great Companion who is always right at their side.
Thank you for hearing their call and answering them. You never turn a deaf ear, even when our troubles are self-inflicted. You never turn them away to fend for themselves. You never tell them to come back when they have their act together. Help them give their hurt to you. Help them hand over any unforgiveness, bitterness, disappointment, or desire to get even. Thank you for taking the heavy load from their heart and carrying it for them. Father, please help them to live as one set free.

This week we will focus on prayer, specifically how parents can pray for their children. Our guide will be Psalm 118. Today let’s begin with a parent’s prayer of thanksgiving.
Psalm 118:1Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
Our children are not a “planned” product. Sure, parents may determine when they would like to have a child, but life comes into existence as a gift from God. Neither are they a “mistake,” an “oops,” or a “surprise.” Children are a great gift from our great God! He is sovereign and has ordained every day of every life (Psalm 139:16); therefore, a parent’s prayer should always begin with thanksgiving.
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for (name your children). I acknowledge them as gifts from your gracious hand. They have been in your thoughts and your plans from eternity past. They have never been out of your all-knowing mind. The psalmist says that you made them in the secret place; you knit them together; you saw their unformed bodies…never taking your eyes off their development and growth. You are good, and you are gracious.
I praise you that your love for them endures forever. I pray that your great love draws them to yourself and keeps them there. I will love them throughout my life, but one day I’ll be gone. There are times when I don’t think anyone could love (name your children) more than me. But your steadfast love will never leave them. Thank you for loving them more than I could ever imagine. Thank you for loving them so much that you sent your Son to bear their sin in his body on the cross. Thank you that through Jesus, you will love them throughout eternity.
In Jesus’ name.

Words matter. They have the power to build up and tear down. And once they escape our mouths, you cannot retrieve them. Words matter and the apostle Paul gives parents a needed warning about our words and our actions. Although this passage is addressed to fathers, it applies to mothers as well.
Colossians 3:21Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
From the time I was seven years old, it was drilled into my head. Every coach from 10-and-under to college bellowed the same command, “Don’t take a called third strike! If you strike out, you had better go down swinging. When you have two strikes, widen your stance, choke up a bit, protect the plate, and don’t take anything close. Whatever you do, never watch the third strike go by!” When I began coaching my kids, I repeated (and repeated) the same instruction.
I will never forget one particular softball game. My oldest daughter Brittany, a fifth grader at the time and a great player made the last out of the game by (it’s hard to say it) taking a called third strike. My insides ignited. After the obligatory handshakes and “Great game, girls,” I made my way to the car with Brittany and exploded. “What just happened out there? Why didn’t you swing the bat? Never, I mean never, take a called third strike! How many times have you heard me say that? You could have pulled that pitch down the right-field line. As fast as you are, you could have made it to third easily. We could have won the game! What were you doing?” I stopped to take a breath and circled back with the same questions, notched up with more emotion. Then I saw the tears. My heart sank as I realized my angry (and foolish) rant directed at my daughter was precipitated by a recreational softball game! The word “provoke” means to “embitter” or “irritate.” One translation uses the word “exasperate.” This continued practice will cause your children to lose heart, lose confidence, and lose respect for you as a father or mother. As parents, we are called to demonstrate what it means to honor the heavenly Father in all things. As mothers and fathers, we are called to build up our children. As parents, we are called to demonstrate unconditional acceptance and love. Embittered hearts will walk away from God and us.
Father, please help us be parents who build up, not tear down. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Over the last two days, we’ve considered four questions. Here are the final two.
Are you diligently teaching your children how to love and serve God through your words and actions?The word “diligently” means to “impress them” or “repeat.” First, we must know the foundational truths of the Christian faith, and then we can teach these truths to our children. You cannot impart what you do not possess. This instruction is not always a “sit down” Bible study. We should teach our children through the normal activities of our day.
Are your thoughts and habits pleasing to God?The Pharisees took this instruction literally and wore leather pouches, called phylacteries, that held Scripture passages. However, as Jesus reminded the religious leaders many times, outward show without inward application is hypocritical.
Families are known for many different things. We often hear these kinds of statements, “All the kids in that family are smart,” or “All their children are athletic.” “That family lives in one of the biggest houses in the area,” or “That family is very wealthy.” How do you want your family to be known? Here’s a wrap-up question to consider from this passage: Does your home stand out as uniquely Christian?
Father, help us be parents who lead our homes well. Help us to stand out as uniquely Christian. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Today’s questions:
Do you demonstrate your love for God with your whole person?We could dive into each of these words – heart, soul, and strength. But, in essence, these words describe the entirety of who we are and what we do. As parents, mentors, and models, we must ask some penetrating questions. Do we love the Lord with our thinking? Our mind can take us places we shouldn’t go. What about our attitudes? Desires? Passions? Do we use our time and energy in ways that honor God?
Are you grounded in the foundations of the faith (knowledge), and are you living grounded (practice)?The words of Scripture told in the Shema must be on our hearts. When I first came to The Bible Chapel years ago, people would describe a person’s knowledge of the Bible by saying, “He (She) knows their way around Scripture.” Do you know your way around Scripture? Living Grounded is a twelve-session study that will help you understand the foundational truths of the Christian faith. Read the passage, and then we’ll start with two questions.

Here are two questions for today.
Is the Lord your God?
A relationship with God is not dependent on the completion of a CCD or confirmation class. A personal relationship with the living God did not begin at your first communion or baptism. We cannot earn a relationship with God by our worth or our good works. A relationship with God takes place only when you realize your helpless state and your desperate need for a Savior. Have you trusted in Jesus alone as the only way to have a relationship with God?
Is the Lord your only God?
What drives you? Really? Where do you spend your money? Where do you spend your time? We all need to be aware of the little “gods” in our lives. God does not accept competition. The Lord God must be your one and only.
Father, help us to see ourselves for who we really are. Help us to see what drives us. Show us whom we truly serve. Show us our hearts and help us follow hard after you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Young parents, cherish every day. Time flies. The psalmist says it this way:
Psalm 39:4O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days ….
My wife Lori and I wrote the following thoughts (Lori’s are in italics) when our children were 10, 8, 6, and before Mackenzie was born. Now all of them are married, and we have seven grandchildren. Times flies. It really seems like yesterday when we wrote this.
Some day when the kids are gone, Lori and I will not have to share our Ben and Jerry’s double fudge chocolate almond ice cream. All the chocolate chip cookie dough will be mine. I will no longer be disappointed when I open the cookie container to find cookies replaced by crumbs.
During dinner, there won’t be any complaining about the food. No one will refuse to eat or “gag” when required to try one bite. The conversation topics will be other than discussing and demonstrating proper etiquette. We will no longer be answering questions on every thinkable and unthinkable subject. The “Why did the chicken cross the road?” joke will be banned from dinner conversations (at least until grandkids).
Some day when the kids are gone, I will never watch, Where the Red Fern Grows again. Although the setting is Oklahoma, the story has lost its appeal after a hundred viewings. After the kids are gone, it will not look like it “snowed” popcorn when the movie is over. Cleaning under the cushions of the couch will no longer be like taking a trip to Toys “R” Us.
My refrigerator will no longer temporarily change into a freezer because the temperature knob “mysteriously adjusts itself.” While cooking dinner, I won’t be playing Barbies, building Lego models, coloring a picture, assisting in homework, giving spelling tests, and supervising music practice. I won’t be asking everyone to pick up their backpacks, pick up their toys, wash their hands, take off their muddy shoes, or leave the rocks and bugs outside. My kitchen table will not have to be constantly cleared of school papers to review or homework papers to be done.
Some day after the kids are gone, the house will no longer be like walking through a minefield. Sharp objects like plastic dinosaurs will not cause cries of pain when I walk barefoot across a darkened room. Big objects like metal trucks and American doll furniture will not stop my unprotected toes in midstride.
My laundry will no longer be the “monster” that it has become. My stain removal technique that is being perfected will no longer be in such demand. No longer will I open the washer lid to find that the load has been “stone-washed” or “crayon-dyed.” Gum and candy will not be constantly attached to the inside of my dryer. All my hangers will be the same size.
Some day when the kids are gone, my desk at home will again belong to me. There will be a place for me to sit and work without first having to take a wheelbarrow load of school papers, Sunday School projects, Pioneer Club papers, past due activity registrations… to the trash (then feeling guilty that I did not file them away to look at and cry over in ten years). I may even update my paperweight. Now it is a sand-filled baby food jar with a wooden heart glued over the logo. A VBS project, I think.
Someday my stuff will be where I put it. My best pair of scissors will not be used for cutting everything imaginable. They will not “disappear” and then suddenly reappear in the yard after the spring thaw. My sewing table will not resemble a miniature “Goodwill” bin. It will no longer be the “Lost and Found” center of our home. “Hey, Mom, I can’t find my swimming goggles.” “Have you looked on my sewing table?”
Some day when the kids are grown, there will be a spring and summer evening when we are not at a Little League game. I will not volunteer to coach a sport I know absolutely nothing about (soccer) just because they need a coach. I will find things to do other than snickering at preschoolers as they attempt to kick a ball with the inside and outside of their left foot. I will talk about subjects other than Red League girls’ softball. I will not stay up late deciding who should pitch and who should play third on Garrison’s baseball team.
I won’t be spending frenzied minutes before games looking for shin guards, batting gloves, baseball/softball mitts, uniforms, or hats. I won’t do any last-minute ironing of Pioneer Club badges or frantically check the calendar to see if I missed my night for snacks.
Some day when the kids are gone… we already dread it. But when that inevitable day comes, we will have our memories. Memories of first words and first steps. Long trips in small cars. “Crabbing” and cooking the crabs. Fishing but not wanting to kill or clean the fish. Camping and forgetting the matches to light the lantern. Bicycle rides and wrecks. Long nights holding sick babies. Long days in the hospital with a very sick six-week-old. Emergency room stitches. Losing a four-year-old at a crowded school during an open house. Nicknames only our family will ever know and appreciate. Family devotions that challenged our patience and theology. And many more adventures…will all be rich memories…someday when our kids are gone.
Lord, we need your help. We are busy, imperfect parents doing our best but seldom feeling we have done enough. Give us your focus, your perspective, and your wisdom during these hectic days of raising children. And when the time comes when their car is packed, and we kiss them goodbye, although our eyes will be filled with tears, may our hearts be filled with your peace … and no regrets. As we turn to walk into our empty house, may it be filled with memories we have taken the time to make, and may we know that you have built our home. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Life goes by fast. In the blink of an eye. And in the blink of an eye, our children grow up. There is not a moment to lose.
Psalm 39:4O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days ….
The first time we took Brittany to church, someone stopped us to “ooh” and “aah” over our newborn and somewhere in between the goofy talk that grown-ups use to talk to babies (as if babies can somehow understand us if we talk in a high pitch and make clucking sounds) said, “Enjoy every day. It goes fast.” I’ll admit that as I looked down at our cute little bundle of colic keeping us up at night with piercing screams, I didn’t comprehend “fast.” But now I do.
Our first little bundle is now a wife and mother. Our son Garrison and his wife have three children, with their oldest already in first grade. Lara and her husband have two boys. And Mackenzie and Zach are married living in Florida. But, seriously, how did that happen? Where did the years of first words, first steps, and first birthdays go? How did the years of cutting teeth, pulling teeth, braces, and monthly installments to the orthodontist disappear so fast? Now I long for the days when Garrison sat with me during Steeler games and asked an unending series of questions like, “If the Steelers punt the ball and someone shoots the ball when it’s in the air, what would be the ruling?”
Our kids grow up fast, and there is not a moment to waste. What we as parents give them can come from no one else. What parents fail to provide is found nowhere else. We are the framers of little hearts that grow into big lives. Parents must take advantage of every fleeting day. One more thing…if anyone knows the ruling when a punt is blasted out of the air, let me know.
Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Children are God’s great gift! Check out this passage from the Psalms.
Psalm 127:3Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.
“Today’s the day!” Lori had been up all night with back pain and knew the time had come for our baby to be born. Thankfully I had gotten a good night’s rest. I was going to need it for the exhausting work ahead. Putting fresh wet towels on Lori’s forehead, feeding her spoonfuls of crushed ice, and leading her in the Lamaze chant of “hee, hee, hee” and “haa, haa, haa” was no easy job. Eventually, a no-nonsense nurse in the birthing room fired me from leading the Lamaze chant, pushed me aside, and took over my assignment. The nerve!
Finally, the indescribable moment came. At Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas, on a hot August afternoon, Brittany Christina entered the world. The emotion that washed over Lori and me was like nothing we had experienced before. God had given us a great gift! A true miracle! A beautiful little reward! Everyone in the room was happy…even Nurse Cranky.
On August 11, 1986, our lives changed. Lori was a mother! I was a…father! We were parents! And we learned early on that parenting is not for sissies. As God blessed us with three more children (Garrison, Lara, and Mackenzie), we learned that along with these beautiful gifts comes great responsibility. Parents are given a short window of time to instill biblical values, character traits, and a love for Jesus Christ. From the moment the doctor says, “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!” there is not a moment to waste.
Father, thank you for the gift of children. We acknowledge you as the great Giver. Give us all we need to be parents that please you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

“The seed of every sin known to man is in my heart.” Those words were proclaimed by the great Scottish pastor and writer Robert Murray McCheyne and echoed by John Owen, a seventeenth-century English theologian. We are capable of every sin. And that fact should result in deep humility and dependence. So when a Pharisee named Simon criticized Jesus for allowing a prostitute to anoint him with expensive perfume, wash his feet with her tears, and wipe them with her hair, our Lord told a story to drive home an unforgettable truth.
Luke 7:40-43
And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.”
There is a definite lesson each of us should learn from this story: Spiritual pride has no place in a relationship with Jesus. Spiritual pride provides the fertile soil for sin to sprout and grow. Only one person has ever told me that he could never have an affair. Turns out he did. Spiritual pride takes us down one way or another.
This certainly does not mean we ever back down from the truth. However, it does mean we share the truth humbly with gentleness and respect, knowing that “but for the grace of God there go I.”
Love for God comes from an understanding of what he has forgiven. Grace receivers should be the best grace givers. Grace never approves of sin; it paves the way for forgiveness.
Father, we must speak clearly regarding sin. Help us speak clearly and boldly in love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Today we read an amazing story about amazing grace. A woman who had led a sinful life was ready to head in a different direction, so she found the Great Agent of Change. This account is a powerful reminder: Jesus did not turn sinners away…whatever their sin…neither should we.
Luke 7:36-39One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.”
I believe many people treat homosexuality like it’s a different sin…a “worse than others” sin. Although it is listed with adulterers, the greedy, and liars (1 Cor. 6:9-11, 1 Tim. 1:9-10), we conclude that there has to be an asterisk by “[those] who practice homosexuality” noting that all sins are bad, but this sin is the worst. If we believe someone else’s sin is worse than our own, we fail to fully deal with our sin.
Stanton Jones said, “If you cannot empathize with a homosexual person because of fear of, or revulsion to them, then you are failing our Lord.” In today’s passage, the woman who lived a sinful life repulsed the Pharisees. Jesus was repulsed by their lack of grace.
Father, we must speak clearly regarding sin. Help us speak clearly and boldly in love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Our backs were turned on God. We had no desire for him, we wanted nothing to do with him. We were headed our own way at our own pace. Sin was not our shame but our significance. Our life was characterized by acted-out rebellion—sex before marriage, sex outside of marriage, and sex outside of God’s created design. We lived in idolatry, greed, drunkenness, slander, and fraud. We all bowed before the god of “ME.” Pompous pride ignored God’s love and grace.
But then, our life was interrupted. In God’s timing and in God’s way, he ordained a life-changing meeting with Jesus. We were stopped in our tracks. God washed off the filth, set us apart, and declared us innocent of all our sin. Through Jesus and his Spirit working within us, our dead spiritual hearts started to beat.
Remember where you were when you met Jesus. That life-transforming meeting gives us the grace to speak the truth in love to those who are there now. We don’t look at those caught in sin with haughty eyes but with eyes of grace. Apart from God’s grace, where the “unrighteous” is, is exactly where we were! Pray that God pours out his grace on the “unrighteous” just as he poured out his grace on you.

Our past is the “used to be me,” but thankfully, we don’t live in the past. As Christians, we have been changed by the powerful work of Jesus! Check this out.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Today’s passage does not say that any person who has sinned will be barred from the kingdom of God. If that were the case, heaven would be empty except for the Trinity. Scripture is clear that all of us have sinned. The “unrighteous” in these verses refers to those whose lives are characterized by sin apart from Christ. The “unrighteous” have not been “washed,” “sanctified,” and “justified.” Without Jesus, they continue to live in and live out their sin.
Paul’s list that describes a life of habitual sin is long but not exhaustive. Included with idolaters, adulterers, and drunkards are “men who practice homosexuality.” Those who continue this course of life are living as those who don’t know God. And those who don’t know God through Jesus will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But for the believer, a change has occurred. Following the list of sinful lifestyles, Paul adds, “And such were some of you.” But no longer! Jesus has washed you from past sin. Jesus has set you apart for himself. You are “sanctified.” And Jesus has declared you, “Not guilty!” You are “justified.” You are not the person you used to be. You are a new creation in Jesus. The old is gone, and the new has come through the “Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” Thank God for his cleansing, sanctifying, and justifying grace!
Father, we must speak clearly regarding sin. Help us speak clearly and boldly in love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

It is important to understand that in the Old Testament, there are three strands of laws. These laws are essential for us to learn about God and find transferable principles. However, there is only one strand that never goes away. We could call them “The Sticking Laws.” Let’s check this out.
Leviticus 18:22You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.
Many who argue for same-sex relationships from a biblical standpoint see a passage like today’s, roll their eyes, and say, “Yeah, this verse is right alongside others that say we shouldn’t mix different kinds of fabrics. The Old Testament is antiquated and contradictory.” So, how do you answer that reasoning? You who are wearing clothes with mixed fabric.
Let’s slow down and think this through. Let’s consider the three strands of laws recorded in the Old Testament.
The first strand of laws was the Civil Law. These laws were for the nation of Israel and included dietary rules, hygiene practices, business regulations, and laws governing interaction between neighbors. A second strand of laws addressed religious rituals. These were called the Ceremonial Laws and dealt with a worshiper’s responsibility regarding the sacrificial system.
These two strands of laws—the Civil and Ceremonial—ended with the coming of Christ. The Church is now made up of believers from many nations, each nation with its own set of civil and religious laws. The head of the Church, Jesus, became our perfect sacrifice. Today, we don’t sacrifice animals for our sins because Jesus became our one-time-for-all-time sacrifice when he died on the cross.
A third strand of laws remains—the Moral Law. These laws, given in the Old Testament, extend through time. Moral laws, summed up in the Ten Commandments, are restated and emphasized again in the New Testament. God’s standards for marriage and sexuality are found in the Moral Law. Yes, we can mix different kinds of fabric today, but we can’t mix the message of marriage. The creation design continues as part of the Moral Law—one man and one woman for life.
Father, we must speak clearly regarding sin. Help us speak clearly and boldly in love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Did you know that the first human being God created was incomplete? Adam was created with something missing. And, according to God, his incompleteness was not good.
Genesis 2:18Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Everything that God created was good. In fact, God said his creation was “very good” (Gen 1:31). Everything was great, except this one thing—it was “not good that the man should be alone.” The creation of man was insufficient. By himself, man could not do all that God intended for humanity. The incomplete creation needed completion. The man needed a counterpart—a person like him and at the same time unlike him.
So, God created a woman—a “helper fit for him.” The word “helper” is not at all a demeaning description. In fact, the word “helper” is usually used to describe God himself. Man is lacking without God, and so man and woman are lacking without each other. Woman was, and is, God’s answer for man’s aloneness, his incompleteness. What the man lacked, the woman supplied, and what the woman lacked, the man supplied.
When God made a “helper” for the man, he made a woman; God created them, male and female. This is a big problem for the philosophical foundation of homosexuality. God did not create a man to complete the man. Therefore, relationship and intimacy in marriage is designed only for a man and woman.

Imago Deo. That’s Latin for “Image of God.” Our passage today reminds us that we were all created in God’s image. What an amazing truth!
Genesis 1:27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
John was one of my best friends. We kept up with each other from childhood. When Lori and our kids would go to Oklahoma to visit family during the summer, John would come to Pittsburgh to keep me company. We worked on home projects that Lori had lined up during the year. Then, in the evening, we checked out local restaurants, watched movies, and took in a few Pirates games. I always looked forward to those times with John.
John was single, and I often asked, “When are you going to find someone to marry?” He would tell me about a girl he had taken out or one he wanted to. But relationships never seemed to go anywhere. Those discussions took place year after year in person, over the phone, and through email. That’s why I was shocked when John told me he was gay. He said he had tried to tell me for years but could never find the courage.
God created man in his own image (Imago Deo). “Male and female he created them.” Scripture is clear that practicing homosexuality is a sin and must be addressed. But we will also see that most who struggle in this area do not march in LGBTQ+ parades or seek front-page photos of their “marriage.” They are sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends, who engage in a silent struggle with a powerful temptation. Certainly, we must take a biblical stand against this sin. And, as for every sin, we must boldly speak the truth, and we must always speak the truth in love.
Father, we must speak clearly regarding sin. Help us speak clearly and boldly in love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

My purpose in this week’s devos is to show why living together before marriage is not a part of God’s design. But what if it’s too late? What are the next steps after the wrong steps?
Once again, let’s start with Genesis 2:24.
Genesis 2:24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
For a man and woman living together before marriage, the heart of commitment is missing, so true friendship is impossible. Neither one has given any assurance that they will stay in the relationship. Without commitment, sex is simply a physical act. Waking up next to someone who wants sexual satisfaction but is unwilling to make a long-term commitment is far emptier than being in bed alone.
So…if you are living with someone, what are the next steps after the wrong steps? For starters, don’t get married! Not yet. Physically separate for at least six months and abstain from sexual intimacy. Make sure your relationship is not built on sex alone. Ask good Christian friends to hold you accountable. Ask God’s forgiveness for disobeying his instructions. Date each other and pursue a true friendship. Secure biblical premarital instruction. When you are certain God made you for each other, set a date and celebrate your public commitment with family and friends. Marriage must have a solid foundation to endure.
The next steps after the wrong steps must be following God’s steps!
Father, I pray for that couple living together. I know doing the right thing will be hard. But help them desire obedience and give them the courage to obey. Lead them to a church where they can be with others who love them and will provide solid biblical premarital counseling. Confirm that you want them together, and if so, help them celebrate a covenant of commitment. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Genesis 2:24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
A man and woman leaving their father and mother describe the friendship part of the Biblical Love Package we have been considering over the past three days. The word “hold fast to” describes the commitment we have discussed, and, of course, becoming “one flesh” describes the physical act. The three parts of the Biblical Love Package were observed (and are observed today) in the engagement and wedding ceremony.
In the Jewish community, a couple first became engaged. This was called the kiddushin. The engagement was so binding that breaking it off constituted divorce. Following the kiddushin was the huppah—the actual wedding celebration. The groom, accompanied by his friends with tambourines and instruments, went to the bride’s house, where the ceremony started. Her companions led the bride, beautifully adorned, to the home of the groom. There a public celebrative service of commitment took place. At the end of the ceremony, her parents escorted the bride to the bridal chambers. There the husband and wife consummated their marriage for the first time.
A wedding is not a waste. The wedding is a true celebration of a new beginning, not simply making “official” what has been going on for some time but starting life new and fresh together.

So far this week, we have considered reasons why couples choose to live together and some statistics proving that living together doesn’t set marriages up for success. We’ve already looked at the first two parts of the Biblical Love Package: Friendship (Spirit Love) and Commitment (Heart Love). Here’s part three—the act of oneness that holds friendship and commitment together.
Today let’s talk about physical love. Here’s how it is poetically described in the Song of Solomon.
Song of Solomon 4:16Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! Blow upon my garden, let its spices flow.
CONSUMMATION: Physical Love
The act of physical love is expressed with the Hebrew word dod. It means to “caress, rock, fondle, and embrace.” Dod is the act of sexual intimacy. It is the experience of oneness reserved for marriage.
The Biblical Love Package consists of friendship, commitment, and sexual intimacy. These three components, working together, form a relationship bond that nothing will tear apart. So, why does living together not work? Because it does not contain all the elements of the Biblical Love Package. It is an attempt at friendship focused on sex without commitment. One has described living together as having a ready and available sex partner who will share the rent and housekeeping without making long-term promises. For a relationship to thrive, friendship, commitment, and intimacy must be wrapped in God’s design of marriage.
Father, forgive us for exchanging your design for our desires. Help us follow your instructions for marriage. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Let’s use Song of Solomon 2:5 to set the stage for our conversation.
Song of Solomon 2:5Sustain me with raisins; refresh me with apples, for I am sick with love.
So far this week, we have considered reasons why couples choose to live together and some statistics proving that living together doesn’t provide a stable foundation for marriage. Yesterday I wrote about friendship (spirit love), the first part of the “Biblical Love Package.” Here’s the second of three essential parts:
COMMITMENT: Heart Love
The second part of the Biblical Love Package is characterized by the Hebrew word yahab. This word expresses the deep affection of the heart when describing a person who is “head over heels” in love. This is a love of commitment and covenant. This is a love that says, “I want to be with you forever! Let’s make a vow to God with a room full of witnesses that we will be together until death.” Yahab is a love of loyal dedication. Unfortunately, couples that live together are not ready or willing to make that commitment. A person unwilling to say wedding vows is a person unwilling to say, “I love you no matter what.”
Tomorrow we will consider the final part of the Biblical Love Package— Consummation: Physical Love.

Song of Solomon 5:16His mouth is most sweet, and he is altogether desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
On Monday, we considered some reasons why couples choose to live together, and yesterday we looked at statistics proving that living together doesn’t set marriages up for success. So today, let’s begin to consider three components that must be part of the “Biblical Love Package.” Here’s the first one:
FRIENDSHIP: Spirit Love
The Hebrew word rea expresses the first part of the Biblical Love Package. Rea is most often translated as “friendship” (the love of the spirit). In one study, couples were asked to rank a list of possible goals for their marriage. The single most important goal was to have a friend in one’s partner. In another study, FamilyLife purposed to determine why singles wanted to get married. 84% described friendship as the primary reason. A true “friend loves at all times” (Prov. 17:17).
When you have a real friend in your spouse, you have a loyal companion, a person who will stick with you for better or worse….
Tomorrow we will discover the second part of the Biblical Love Package—Heart Love: Commitment.

Yesterday we considered the three primary reasons why couples choose to live together before marriage. Today let’s consider three statistics as evidence that “kicking the tires” doesn’t work.
- Most cohabitating couples will either break up or marry within two years.Those who break up carry the baggage of a failed intimate connection into their next relationship. While it seems that marriage within two years is a positive outcome, statistics show that the union is built upon a shaky foundation.
- The rate of divorce among couples that have lived together prior to marriage is 50% higher than among couples that have not.The man who built his house on the sand took a shortcut. When the storms came, the foundation could not secure the house. The shaky foundation of cohabitation is like building your marriage on the sand.
- After ten years of marriage, only fifteen out of one hundred cohabitating couples are still together.The odds are against couples that live together before marriage. Of those who say, “I do,” 85% end up saying, “I’m out.”
Research is clear. Living together is a shortcut that positions the relationship on a faulty foundation. “We know better than the Architect of marriage!” is an arrogant and dangerous statement.

Taking a test drive before you buy a car. Good move. Trying on a pair of pants to make sure they fit. Yep. Checking out a home before taking on the mortgage, who wouldn’t do that? Even when you order online, you try things out and try things on. So why not live together before marriage?
Today over 50% of couples getting married for the first time will live together before saying, “I do.” My purpose in this week’s devos is to show why living together before marriage is not a part of God’s design. I pray that this information will provide understanding to help you make godly decisions and give godly counsel.
Let’s return to the premier verse on marriage.

There are three primary reasons why couples choose to live together.
- Compatibility. Everything in life has a built-in “practice time,” right? Drivers start with a learner’s permit. Doctors begin as interns. Teachers have time as “practice” or “student” teachers. Shouldn’t couples make sure they are compatible before taking their vows?
- Convenience. Some couples choose to live together for economic and practical convenience. Paying for one place is cheaper than paying for two. And every night, there is a ready and willing sexual partner.
- Scarred and Scared. The high rate of divorce has many couples running scared. Too many kids have lived through the hellish experience of their parents’ divorce. They don’t want to go through that personally, nor do they want to drag their children through a breakup.
While these reasons sound sensible and practical from a human perspective, they fail to accomplish their purpose. Hang with me this week. Tomorrow we’ll consider three “cohabitating statistics.” From these, you will see that living together doesn’t work.

When you read devotionals pertaining to marriage, some of you may feel like I am rubbing salt in your wounds. That’s certainly not my intent, and for those who have been divorced, I know the pain is deep. And I know many of you tried so hard to keep your marriage together. You can’t undo the past. You desire to make your life count for God. Thank God he offers forgiveness and restoration to us all.
Psalm 86:5For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
Here are several things I would recommend if you have been divorced or are going through a divorce. Prayerfully consider those that may apply to you.
- Attempt to reconcile if possible.This, of course, may be out of the question. But if your former spouse is not remarried, how amazing would it be for God to change hearts and bring you back together as a new couple. At least, commit it to prayer.
- Seek forgiveness from God and your former spouse for your contribution to the marriage failure.So maybe it was 90% their fault. Then own up to your 10% and seek forgiveness. Don’t worry about your former spouse’s response. Just do what God calls you to do.
- Don’t jump into another relationship on the rebound.Far too many people make big relationship mistakes as they rebound from a divorce. Get involved in a Divorce Care ministry and take the needed time to heal.
- When/if you remarry, make a commitment to do it right…to make it last.You can’t change the past. But your present and future can be radically transformed by God’s grace.
Finally, remember this: The Lord is “good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon [him].” Call on him and let him heal your heart.
Father, I pray for those who have experienced the hell of a divorce. Comfort them. Remind them of your steadfast love and forgiveness. Give them patience in healing and a commitment to follow hard after you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

In the movie Vanilla Sky, a couple has been sleeping together, and now the guy wants out of the relationship. He’s ready to move on to a new partner. The woman is hurt and angry. In her response, she makes a great theological statement. She says to her boyfriend, “Don’t you know that when you sleep with someone, your body makes a promise whether you do or not.” Sex is a powerful physical and emotional act—invented by God. It is never to be treated lightly. Parents, this must be taught and emphasized to our children.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Sex is physical. It is something we do with our bodies, the bodies that God graciously gave us to serve him. Our bodies are a special gift from God. Believers have been bought from sin’s slavery by the death of Jesus. We were bought with a price; therefore, we are called to honor God with our bodies.
We must teach our children that sex is more than just a physical act. It is a powerful emotional experience reserved for a husband and wife. Sexual intimacy outside of marriage is outside of God’s plan. It is a sin against our bodies. Sex makes a promise whether you do or not.
Father, help us teach our children well. Help us prepare them for the barrage of unhealthy sexual messages that surround them. Help them, Lord, to flee immorality and honor you with their bodies. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

We are spending time this week considering God’s Word on sexuality. This is an area we need to address boldly from Scripture and live out biblically in our lives. As I mentioned yesterday, sex is one of the three major areas (along with communication and money) that blow up marriages. Understanding that sex is God’s idea and must be lived out according to his instruction is critical for building strong marriages.
Prior to the fall, Adam was in a perfect situation. He was living in the beauty of a paradise man cave. He had uninhibited communion with God. And yet … he was alone. Don’t miss the bigger truth—Adam’s aloneness was not a result of sin. God created him that way!
Genesis 2:18Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
After God had Adam name all the animals, emphasizing his aloneness, he caused him to fall into a deep sleep. God took from Adam’s side to create a woman…a “helper fit for him.” The word “helper” is not a second-class descriptor. The word is usually used to describe God himself. It describes a person who would complete the man. In essence, Adam was a part that needed another part to complete the whole.
Man and woman are designed by God to complete each other, to do together what they could never do alone. This completion is powerfully illustrated and experienced in sexual intimacy. Marital sex physically confirms and reaffirms the marriage commitment. God’s math of sex is this: 1 + 1 = 1.
Father, thank you for the gift of sex. May we always experience it in a way that honors you and our spouse. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

There are three major areas that can blow up a marriage: Issues with communication, sex, and money. Let’s spend time this week focusing on what God says about sex.
Genesis 2:24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Sex is God’s idea. He invented the one-flesh relationship. He created the man and the woman with all the necessary parts to become one in the act of intimacy. Don’t think that Adam and Eve came out from behind the bushes on Day One all blushed and breathless and said, “Whew! You’ll never guess what we discovered! That was fun!” God designed the entire experience.
Every time a husband and wife come together in the act of intimacy, they renew their covenant of marriage. They are reaffirming their loyalty and commitment to each other. They are naked, vulnerable, and not ashamed to give themselves to the one they have vowed to love for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, until separated by death.
One author says, “When our Creator devised the one-flesh relationship, He placed with it the potential for sexual intimacy that could bless marriage almost beyond belief.”¹ True, isn’t it? Sex is a powerful experience that can “bless marriage almost beyond belief” or be a source of constant tension and frustration. So how are you using God’s gift of sex in your marriage?
Father, thank you for the gift of sex. May we, as husbands and wives, use it to honor you and each other. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Parents, we must teach our children the truths of Scripture, and we must confirm the truths of Scripture by our actions. The spiritual education and development of our children is on us … a weighty responsibility that cannot be delegated. Check out this passage from Psalm 78.
Psalm 78:5-7He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments….
Teaching our children is an investment in the next generation. What a privilege it is to bring a life into the world! And what a solemn responsibility we have as parents to clearly explain to those God entrusts to us, who he is, how much he loves us, the work of his Son on the cross, the power of the Spirit, and how to live a life that is pleasing to him. As parents, we are both mentors and models of God’s message.
Investing in the next generation is a deposit that keeps on giving. We teach our children so that they will teach their children, and their children will teach their children. God’s profound plan depends on one person sharing his message with another individual. This exchange is most powerful when it is life-on-life within the nurturing environment of the home.
Father, give us the focus, energy, and passion as parents to mentor and model your truth to the next generation. Help us keep the message clear as it comes from our lips and is confirmed with our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Yesterday we focused on the assignment that God gives every husband. And we emphasized that it is a very tall order! Every husband is to love his wife just as Christ loved the church. Today we’ll focus on the biblical instruction for wives from Ephesians 5. Let’s be receptive to understanding what is truly expected.
Ephesians 5:22-24Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Submission. Our culture has made this to be an antiquated word that smacks of servitude. And, no doubt, many misguided and despicable men, who profess to be believers, have abused their wives using this verse. This is ungodly and unscriptural!
This passage speaks to the God-given assignments in the family. Think of a partnership between a president and vice-president of a company. They work in collaboration, but one has the final responsibility. So, it is in marriage and family. Wives are to voluntarily submit themselves to the servant-leadership of their husbands (See yesterday’s devotional on servant-leadership. The partnership doesn’t work if the man is not fulfilling his role as a servant-leader).
Submission does not mean that the wife is inferior to her husband. Submission does not mean that the wife loses her identity in the relationship. Submission does not mean that the wife becomes a passive participant. The apostle Peter used Sarah, Abraham’s wife, as an example of submission. Read about Sarah in Genesis 16-21. She was anything but a quiet, passive, non-participant! But she stuck by her husband during disappointments, difficulties, and discouragement. God blessed her for her unwavering commitment.
Father, don’t let us place the culture’s definition on biblical truth. Help each husband and wife fulfill the roles in marriage that you have designed. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Building a strong family begins with strong marriages. Husbands, today’s passage is for you. I will warn you; this passage presents a tall task. And yet, this is the biblical model for every husband and father.
Ephesians 5:25Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…
God’s design for the family is for husbands to demonstrate spiritual leadership. This leadership is never to be demanding, derogatory, or overbearing. Verbal or physical abuse is sinful and destructive (If you are tempted to sin in this area, get professional Christian counseling immediately).
God’s role for the husband is servant-leadership. Here’s what servant-leadership looks like.
- Sacrificial Love. Just as Christ gave himself up for the church, a husband must be willing to live and love sacrificially. This means more than our willingness to give up our lives for our spouses. Are we willing to give up time, a recreational activity, or a positive career move for our wives?
- Sanctifying Love. Jesus gave himself up for the church “to make her holy.” Likewise, husbands must love their wives in such a way that encourages and supports their wife’s spiritual growth. At the end of the day, husbands and dads are responsible for the spiritual well-being of their families.
- Nourishing Love. Husbands are responsible for the physical, emotional, and spiritual welfare of their wives. Therefore, we must protect and provide for our family.
- Satisfying Love. A servant-leader is a student of his wife and seeks to develop and grow in emotional and physical oneness. The perversion of pornography will prove damaging to intimacy with the real person in your marriage.
Father, help us as husbands to be true servant-leaders. Give us the courage to do what we must do in order to be what you have called us to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

In today’s passage, Jesus puts marriage on the divine level. He looks each husband and wife in the eyes and says, “God has joined you together. Don’t mess it up” (My paraphrase). Marriage is not about a man and woman going through a ceremony, moving into a home with a white picket fence, and having a family. Marriage is not about you … it’s about honoring God with the relationship he has given you. Here’s the way Jesus explains the commitment of marriage.
Mark 10:6-9But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
Husbands and wives, you have been joined together by the eternal God! C. S. Lewis noted how God orchestrated your relationship. He wrote:
In friendship … we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years’ difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another … the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting—any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for the Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work …. “You have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.”
There are no chances or coincidences in the Christian life. Like a “secret master of ceremonies,” God has brought you together as husband and wife. “…What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Father, remind us often that marriage is about you. As husband and wife, help us honor you together in a way we could never honor you by ourselves. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

How can we make our families strong—bulletproof—against the constant attacks from our culture? Well, for starters, strong families always start with strong marriages. So, let’s begin at the beginning. This passage in Genesis is repeated by Jesus in the Gospels and Paul in his letter to the Ephesians.
Genesis 2:24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Marriage is God’s idea. He created man and woman and put them together. God’s instructions for this relationship are found throughout the Bible, but here in Genesis, the foundation is laid. Over the past two days, we have considered what it means to “leave” our father and mother and be “united to” one’s spouse. So today, let’s consider the meaning of a one-flesh relationship.
A ONE-FLESH RELATIONSHIP DESCRIBES:
- Spiritual Oneness: Growing together in your love for Christ.
- Emotional Oneness: Commitment to exclusive feelings.
- Physical Oneness: An exclusive intimate physical commitment.
- Missional Oneness: Going the same direction at the same time for the same reasons.
Questions for married couples:
- Do you pray and read Scripture together?
- Do you think about being with men/women other than your spouse?
- Do you satisfy each other physically?
- Are your lives headed in the same direction?
Questions for young adults:
- Has he(she) ever said to you, “Let’s pray and read Scripture together?”
- Can you see yourself with anyone besides him/her?
- Are you staying sexually pure? Is there pressure to have sex?
- Do you have common interests, desires, and passions about life?
Father, bind us together in a true one-flesh relationship. Harness our hearts as we commit ourselves to go the same way at the same time for the same reasons. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The responsibility of parenting cannot be delegated. The youth group, private school, or Christian school cannot impart the deep truths of the faith to your children. Sure, each plays a part, but parenting is for parents. There are things your children will not hear unless they hear them from you.
Today’s portion of the Shema (Hebrew for “hear”) reminds parents that their responsibility goes far beyond bedtime prayers or breakfast devotions. The instruction of Scripture is 24/7.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
God’s Word should be woven into conversation throughout the day. Spiritual truth should be taught on the ride to school and sports practices. Prayer and biblical principles should be imparted in the evening and the morning. After God’s Word penetrates our hearts, it will permeate our homes.
The best conversations with my children did not come during bedside prayers or our family devotional time on Sunday evenings. The best times took place on the way to Starbucks, on road trips to Oklahoma, sitting on our front porch in the evening, or on the way to a sporting event. God’s Word is pervasive. Don’t try to keep it in a box!
Father, may we be both students and teachers of your Word. Don’t let us be so busy or preoccupied that we miss those teaching moments you hand us as precious gifts. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The family is under attack. From the classroom to the courtroom to the cinema, the “traditional” family is being hit from all sides. But while parents can’t control Hollywood, we can control little Henry. We may not be able to sway judges, but little Jimmy lives under our roof. We can’t control everything the teacher says, but we can control what little Susie hears and watches at home. Therefore, parents must be committed to teaching their children diligently. That’s exactly what the premier parenting passage tells us to do.

A few years ago, my wife Lori and I got hooked on the television show 24. The drama follows Jack Bauer, an agent of the Counter Terrorism Unit. I confess to everyone reading this that we binged on a few of the seasons. While the main culprits in this show are the terrorists, things really fall apart when someone inside CTU is working with the terrorists. The same thing happens in families. Many are blown apart from the inside.
As parents, we are told to teach God’s Word diligently to our children. We must be the ones who impress the truths of the Bible inside the walls of our homes. We must teach our children to wield the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. The word translated “teach diligently” means “to repeat.” Teaching is not done in an evening over dessert. Teaching is done every day over the long haul. The attacks are coming from within. We cannot drop the ball inside our homes.
Father, help us teach and live out your Word daily in our lives and homes. Help us to do our job inside so we can withstand the attacks from the outside. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

How can we live family strong? There is no simple answer to that question, but, for sure, the place to start is in the premier parenting passage of the Old Testament.

In Deuteronomy 5, Moses reminded the Israelites of the Ten Commandments. These are the “words that I command you” Moses is referring to in today’s passage. The commands of God are to be on our hearts. Now, here’s the question: How does a person put God’s commands on his or her heart?
Read God’s Word. The Bible is God’s love letter to you. The Father wants to meet you there every day. The Holy Spirit, who indwells each believer, impresses needed truth and instruction specifically for you. Parents who desire to lead their children spiritually must be reading and studying God’s Word. As the old saying goes, “Speed of the leader; speed of the team.”
Apply God’s Word. In his New Testament book, James warns us that reading without applying is worthless. We must do what God tells us to do. That means we will need to stop some things and start new things. It will call for a rearrangement of priorities. It will demand that you do something.
Yes, I know…some of you wanted steps more profound, like “seven crazy radical steps to put God’s Word in your heart.” Sorry. Until we learn the discipline of reading the Bible each day and applying the truth, we will flounder in our walk with God. The craziest and most radical thing you can do as a follower of Jesus is to read and apply his Word to all the areas of your life.
Father, help us never to be bored with the basics or frustrated with your foundational truth. Help us as singles, spouses, and parents do first things first. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The apostle Peter had a question about forgiveness. When he asked Jesus how many times a person should be forgiven, Jesus told the story of a king who wanted to settle his accounts. The first man brought before the king owed millions of dollars. Facing imprisonment, the debtor begged for leniency. The king showed pity and let him go. The man left the king’s presence with great relief but forgot to transfer the gift of mercy.
Leaving the palace, the debtor ran into a man who owed him some money—just a few dollars— and he lit into the guy demanding payment and ignoring the pleas for grace. So he had the man thrown into prison. Word got back to the king, who had the debtor brought back into his presence and then thrown into prison too. Our passage today explains the king’s reasoning.
Matthew 18:32–33Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’
The lesson of the parable is this: How can we, who have been shown the great grace of God, not transfer that grace to others? Or better, in Jesus’ words, “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart” (Matthew 18:35 NIV). The application is clear. To whom do you need to extend grace and forgiveness today?
Father, may we, as grace-receivers, always be grace-givers. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Living in real life means inevitable issues with people in our lives. When those issues arise, and they will, Jesus gives us specific instructions.
Matthew 18:15If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.
Before you text, email, or call someone, go to whoever wronged you and address the issue with that person. Jesus instructs us to do this: “Go and tell him [the person who sinned against you] his fault, between you and him alone.”
Can you imagine how our lives would benefit if we did that? How many rumors would stop flying? How much bitterness would melt away? How many grudges would be gone? How much resentment would recede? How much anger would be assuaged? How much jealousy would disappear? Just obeying this one verse would change our lives! That’s the power of obeying God’s Word.
Let’s talk to God about this instruction.
Father, when I am hurt by others, I want to lash out and hit back. I want to share with friends how I have been hurt. Please help me slow down and talk to you before talking to anyone else. Help me hear from you on the direction I should take. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Matthew 6:14–15For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
The great author C.S. Lewis says that everybody loves the idea of forgiveness …until they have to forgive someone, that’s true, isn’t it? Forgiveness is a tremendous spiritual truth! What could be better? When we genuinely go to the Father with repentance, he is “faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). He “blots out” our transgressions from the record and chooses to forget our sins (Isaiah 43:25). David writes that God removes our sins from us “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12).
That’s great news! Just don’t ask me to forgive anyone else when they sin against me. I mean, I’m glad God forgives me, but how can I forgive the person who said those hurtful things? How can I forgive the person that derailed my career? How can I forgive my ex-spouse who has brought such pain to me and our family? Sure, I love that God forgives me for everything I do to him, but don’t ask me to forgive others for what they do to me.
Sorry, it doesn’t work like that. The spiritual truth of forgiveness must be understood, accepted, and applied. So spend some time reading and re-reading our passage today. Don’t let another person’s actions plant bitterness in your heart. God has more for you than that.
Father, don’t let us live with heads full of truth and hearts empty of action. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Philippians 4:13I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
If there was ever a verse torn apart by being ripped out of context so often, today’s passage is it. A popular scriptural reference from the world of “Christian” pop psychology, this verse is to be memorized and written on your bathroom mirror with a permanent marker. There it is on the wide receiver’s shoes. Look closely through the quarterback’s facemask, and you can make it out on black strips under his eyes. The conclusion most make is this: Whatever I want to do, God will give me the strength to do it. But always remember this key principle of understanding Scripture: Context ultimately determines the meaning.
In this passage, the apostle Paul is writing about contentment through the peaks and valleys of life. He knows what it means to be in need and to have plenty. He has experienced being well-fed and being hungry. Through real-life lessons, he “learned in whatever situation I am to be content” (Philippians 4:11).
So, Philippians 4:13 does not mean that whatever I want, God will give me the strength to do it. Rather, whatever circumstance God brings into my life, whatever experience he takes me through, he will give me all the strength I need. I can embrace every day with the strength that comes from my Father.
Lord, thank you for that great promise. Thank you for the promise that you will give me all I need to do whatever you call me to do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Philippians 4:19And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
One three-and-a-half-hour church service in the Mathare slum and our last speaking responsibility was over! I gathered with my traveling/preaching partners in a room where our host brought us Cokes. As much as I enjoy the stretching experiences of mission trips, I love getting back home. I looked forward to packing up and heading to the airport to begin the marathon journey back to Pittsburgh. But then, something caught my attention.
The pastors and leaders from three churches counted the money received from the morning offerings. They were counting in an open and public area to be above reproach. That morning, a general offering and an offering for a young student to continue Bible training had been taken. Monies would be given to the student, and the rest would be divided among the pastors. Whatever was given would be the amount they would live on for the coming week.
I have thought about that picture often. The money was stacked on the table, and the pastors waited to see how God would supply. They were not worried about “wants”; they depended on God to meet their daily needs. I have been honored to teach many times in Mathare, but those men taught me more than I have ever taught them.
O God, I am spoiled. I have so much and forget to thank you. Thank you for always meeting the needs of your children. Not only the material ones but the spiritual ones as well, “according to [your] riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” In his name. Amen.

When I was growing up, a plaque hung on a wall in our house that read, “Don’t worry. It may never happen.” I passed that saying many times each day, and those words became branded on my brain. So, of course, I never worry. (I wish!)
Certainly, there are some people who take worry to the extreme. Their lives are a tightly wound ball of fear. But for the rest of us who don’t participate in the extreme sport of worry, we still struggle. Many concerns are real—making ends meet in a challenging economy, waiting on a doctor’s test (“Just to rule out …”), a wayward child, the job, and on and on. Some worries are borrowed—What will happen if …? She should be home by now. I didn’t like how my boss looked at me; she must have some bad news to tell me. But Jesus tells us there is no reason to borrow extra trouble.
Matthew 6:34Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Jesus tells us to slow down. Life is to be lived one day at a time. He will provide what we need for that day. He never gives us grace in bulk. He never says, “Here’s a ten-pound bag of grace. Use as needed over the next weeks.” His mercies are new every morning, and his faithfulness is great (Lam 3:22-23). He promises only one day at a time and one day’s worth of grace at a time. So, focus on your walk with Christ today. Tomorrow you can start all over.
Lord Jesus, thank you for this great reminder to focus on following hard after you today. Should you grant us another day, we’ll do the same tomorrow. In your name. Amen.

Some of you are reading this at a difficult economic time. Your business has shrunk. Your sales are down. Your customers are cutting back. Your salary has been reduced. Your job has gone away. Many jobs in your company are gone, and the rumors are flying that your department is next. For some, the tough times have hit hard. For others, the tough times have hit home. Listen to the words of Jesus.
Matthew 6:25–26Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
When Jesus says, “Do not be anxious,” you say, “Yeah, right!” You desire to provide, take care of your family, pay the bills, and avoid relocation. How can you not worry? How can you not be anxious? Listen to the words of Jesus. Christ follows up his instruction with a promise. God is going to take care of you. Many things are out of your control. He knows that. As hard as it is, he wants you to move from worry to trust, from anxiety to his peace. He takes care of the birds. He’ll take care of you. Now certainly, this passage does not mean we are to sit on the couch and binge on our favorite drama series. Even the birds must fly and find food. But the point is, God’s got your back. You can trust him with all the things that deliver worry to your heart.
Reflecting over a lifetime of experience, King David said this: The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread (Psalm 37:23–25 NIV).
He’ll take care of you. He promises.
Father, for all those worried about their jobs, responsibilities, and the future, remind them deep in their souls that you will take care of them. Remind them of your promises. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer is a personal conversation with our Father. It should not be filled with clever Christian clichés or worn-out prayer phrases. It is fresh, real, and raw—like any meaningful conversation in our lives. Using the Lord’s Prayer to learn about how we are to pray, we see the principles of revering the person of God not only in quiet prayer time but also in the car on a backed-up road when we are in a hurry and in the interaction with our children at the end of the day when fatigue has set in. We have considered our need to submit to the Father’s will. Now we will focus on dependence.
Luke 4:3–4The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’”
After fasting for forty days, Jesus was confronted by Satan. The first temptation presented to our famished Lord was to turn stones into bread. Food was something Jesus wanted and needed. He, the Creator, could have easily turned stones into bread. The offer was inviting to Jesus. But, as hungry as he was and as tempting as the offer was, Jesus refrained. His reasoning is very instructive: “Man shall not live by bread alone,” and Matthew adds, “but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
The response of Jesus moves us beyond the substance that could have satisfied the stomach for a short time, to the Person who can satisfy the soul for eternity. Jesus was dependent, not on the material thing, but on the One who provided the material thing. What a lesson that is for us! We are tempted to trust in what is supplied. Jesus reminds us to always trust in the One who supplies.
Father, we are easily satisfied by things. We sometimes believe that a thing, a situation, or a fulfilled dream will bring satisfaction to our hearts. Remind us that no material thing or person can meet our crying needs. Only you can, and we need to be reminded of that often. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
