Acts 2.14-41

9 August 2026

What makes Christianity different from every other religion? In Peter's first sermon after Pentecost, he doesn't begin with rules or religious rituals. He tells the story of God's faithfulness—from the prophets, to King David, to the resurrection of Jesus—and shows how every promise finds its fulfillment in Christ. Discover how the new covenant, the victory of the risen Messiah, and the call to repentance continue to shape the lives of Jesus' disciples today.

The Gospel of Luke tells us what Jesus began to do and teach. The book of Acts reveals what He continues to do through His Spirit-filled Church. In this introduction to Acts, we explore the significance of Jesus' bodily resurrection and ascension, the coming of the Holy Spirit, the restoration of God's people, and the Church's mission to carry the Kingdom of God from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Acts is more than the history of the early Church—it is the continuing story of the risen King at work through His people.

Instead, Jesus chose surrender over violence, love over vengeance, and the cross over the sword. Join us as we conclude Luke and discover how the greatest revolution in history was won—not by taking lives, but by laying one down.

Luke 22.24-46

12 July 2026

At the Last Supper, the disciples argue over status, Peter insists he will never fail, the disciples misunderstand Jesus' mission, and later they fall asleep when He asks them to pray. At first these seem like unrelated moments, but Luke is weaving them together around one question: What are you trusting when life begins to fall apart? In this message from Luke 22.24–46, we discover that every disciple placed confidence in something that could not save them—status, strength, understanding, or resolve. Only Jesus entrusted Himself completely to the Father. The same question confronts us today: Where have we placed our trust, and will it endure when we are tested?

Luke 22:1-23

At the table where Jesus institutes Communion, betrayal is already in motion. Yet rather than focusing on condemnation, Jesus offers redemption, forgiveness, and the promise of His coming Kingdom. While the plans of man and the enemy can be exercised, the fulfillment of God’s plans are inevitable. Even while actively conspiring against Jesus, Judas is offered the same thing everybody else is. This week we'll explore how Christ responds to betrayal and why His invitation still stands for all who will receive it.

Luke 21:5-38

This section of Scripture, Luke chapter 21:5-38, serves to pull together the “string of pearls” that we’ve been working through the last month or so, since getting into Luke 19… Issuing warnings about the kinds of things the Church is going to have to see, endure, and wrestle in the last days. From deceptions to natural disasters, God uses this time to both warn them about what’s to come, and remind them where to keep their eyes set while the world is thrashing around them. In telling the Church to keep their eyes on God while all of this judgement and disaster strikes, He’s also telling them “Watch, as I restore My People, to be the City on a Hill.” and "See what I will do when I break the box I’ve been placed in.”

Luke 20.41-21.4

21 June 2026

In the final week before His crucifixion, Jesus exposes the difference between religious appearance and genuine devotion. The scribes loved recognition, honor, and public displays of spirituality, but Jesus saw through the optics. Then He pointed to a poor widow whose tiny offering revealed a heart of authentic faith. In a world obsessed with image, status, and being noticed, Jesus reminds us that God is looking beyond appearances to the character of our hearts.

Romans 6:1-14“When we read scripture and choose to follow Christ, we’re made a totally new creation. This then allows us to walk out the will of God for our lives, in order to spread the gospel to those around us. In order to do that live the life Jesus intends for us, we must first be born again; by water and by the Spirit. Considering all that we once were, dead and gone, and being alive in Christ, to live unto God. In Romans, we find Paul helping them navigate this exact process."

In Luke 20.27-40, Jesus confronts the Sadducees — religious elites who denied the resurrection and reduced faith to philosophy and social respectability. But Jesus declares that our God is “not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

This message explores why resurrection matters, why eternal life begins now, and how the Kingdom of God offers more than escapism or religious performance. Ours is not a gospel of death, fear, or the sweet by-and-by. Ours is a Gospel of Life.

When the kingdoms of this world compete for our devotion, whose image do we bear, and whose kingdom are we truly serving?

Dear Theophilus: A Broken Heart for a Broken People

This message invites you to step out of the crowd, face the reality of the cross, and respond to Jesus—not casually, but personally. Because the question isn’t what others say about Him.

With no resources but complete dependence on him, they are sent to proclaim, heal, and trust that God will provide. Then, with nothing more than a boy’s lunch, Jesus shows that ordinary people and ordinary means, placed in his hands, unleash extraordinary abundance. This week we’ll discover what it means to be good soil, to live as Jesus’ true family, and to shine the light of the gospel in a dark world.

From the beginning, Jesus’ life was marked by faithful obedience to God’s law, divine affirmation, and growing wisdom. His parents fulfilled every requirement of the Torah, and in the temple, two Spirit-led servants—Simeon and Anna—recognized him as the long-awaited salvation for Israel and the world. As Jesus grew, so did his favor with God and people. At age twelve, he astounded the teachers in the temple with his understanding, revealing a deep awareness of his identity and mission, yet still honoring his earthly parents. Through it all, his life displayed the unfolding of God’s promise to redeem and restore. If you would like to support us in our ministry you can do so here: vinelife.church/give

Jesus is the pivotal figure in this passage, as the prophet who predicts the destruction of the temple, himself being the new temple, and as the ultimate fulfillment of God’s kingdom. His words about the temple’s destruction point to a major turning point in history where the old covenant gives way to the kingdom of God. This kingdom not confined to Israel or any earthly nation. Jesus also serves as the fulfillment of God’s promises, with his resurrection marking the beginning of God’s kingdom on Earth, which continues through the spread of the gospel. In this passage, Jesus is both the herald of the kingdom and the means by which it will be fully realized at his return. What is the standard for Christian marriage? Since Jesus was never married, how can Jesus be the example? Jesus taught a radical way of forgiveness and reconciliation meant to cover and forgive sin. There was no sin that he could not forgive. Yet there were many who did not follow him or his way, and others who rejected him. The standard for marriage is the same standard God intended from the beginning, to be a people who reconcile rather than divorce, and yet the intent of God is not always the reality of men. Jesus isn’t just important to Christianity, he is it, apart from him there is no way, no truth, and no life. Although all Christians claim to believe this, we often give ourselves over to practices, theologies, and ideologies that distract us from Jesus being all in all, unintentionally we put our faith in something less. It can be a denomination, it can be a technique, it can be a church, a pastor, a beloved teacher, or even a religious experience. Suddenly we find that our faith is not focused on Jesus but on something, else, something less. Once again we are reminded that it is only Jesus, and only faith in him that can deliver.

The story of the Canaanite woman is one that often stretches the modern reader. We wonder why did Jesus call her a dog? Why was that socially acceptable and how should we respond today? Yet the reality is that even though we know Jesus as the hope of the world, as Messiah he was first called to reach the lost sheep of Israel, not just as the fulfillment of the prophecy but as a matter of God’s word and faithfulness. It is that faithfulness and integrity that make the faith of the Canaanite woman and even our faith now so meaningful. Jesus is It: What the Kingdom is Like

Several parables of Jesus ask the question, “What shall we say the kingdom is like?” These are often some of the most misunderstood parables in the gospels mostly because assumptions about the kingdom and theology tend to override the plain explanation of Jesus given to the disciples following the public teaching. This particular parable begins the series of kingdom parables and sets a foundation of understanding for the rest in this gospel. Ultimately, the kingdom is like the king, therefore everything we understand about the kingdom begins and ends with Jesus.

Jesus is It: The Real Faith vs Religion

Religion looks just so much like the authentic faith that the two are often confused for one another. Even the religious themselves think that their beliefs are real Christianity, but religion is known by its fruit. Religion is what the religious use to control others. Religion is not so much a belief but a set of rules by which the religious govern their lives and the lives of others to appear right, and to justify their deeply held convictions which cannot set anyone free, and lack the power to transform. Sometimes these two systems of belief even exist alongside of one another within the same church or even in the same family. While they look very similar they have two very different goals. Religion typically does everything in its power to look good, even if that means crushing others. While authentic faith not only liberates those who profess it, but seeks to liberate those around them, even if that makes the believer look bad or even sinful. No where is this seen more clearly than Jesus and the Pharisees. The Pharisees did everything to manage their optics, trying to look good, while Jesus was often accused of being the friend of tax collectors and sinners, despite actually being sinless. Real faith will lead us into the same Way of life.

12 May 2024 (Mother’s Day)Matthew 6:25-34

Issues of mental health, in particular the topic of anxiety, are a hot topic these days. For too long issues of mental health have often been dismissed or treated with shame rather than compassion and mercy. This particular text has often been used to in such a manner as to not be useful or helpful to those who are dealing with anxiety. In our message today we are looking at the topic through the lens of the entire Sermon on the Mount, being certain to not lift it from it’s context but to keep it in the framework of trusting God for what we need, rather than judging people.

There is a lot to say about the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We have done whole series on just the prayer alone. Yet the prayer has a context in the heart of the Sermon on the Mount that supports Jesus’ message overall and one particular point in particular, which is often missed on all of our preaching about it. Join us as we explore the prayer as simply one subpoena in the sermon, and understand it in context.

The Sermon on the Mount is a beautiful grace filled message that is not converted by the church into a whole new level of legalism. Today as we look at Jesus’ comments on the Torah we learn quickly that if we are to be justified by the law that the real standard of the Law is much greater and unattainable than we could imagine. This is not because the law is bad but because the Law is good and we are not. This then is why Jesus came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets because they point to what is good, and Jesus is it. He is good, he is God, and that is why he can fulfill the Law and the Prophets and make a way for us to live in harmony with them.

24 March 2024*Matthew 19.28-48*

There is an interesting tension in the New Testament (really throughout the Bible) because we have the clear call to evangelize the world, to make disciples of all ethnicities, which is essentially an invitation to those outside the faith to come and know Jesus. At the same time the assembly is a time for believers to gather to build one another up in love, to worship God collectively, and to admonish one another in a way that is not always welcoming to unbelievers. As Americans we love our conveniences, and if we can “save time” by doing both we will often compromise both to make it work for us. But our calling to make disciples of the lost isn’t typically convenient, and neither is our need to worship God. Although we don’t need to complicate things, we do have to make sure that we give ourselves fully to each thing, so that we honor God regardless of the cost.

When we say that Jesus is it, it means we recognize who he is, that he is the embodiment of the law, the fulfillment of the Law, the standard of the Law. Often the modern church misspeaks about the law making it the standard to which Jesus had to rise in order to save us, but this is a fundamental misunderstanding of who Jesus is, what the Law is, and how Jesus fulfills it all.

Among the four gospels, Matthew is one of the more Jewish in style and content, not in an exclusive way, but in its feel and explanations of who Jesus is and why he fulfills the Old Testament prophecies about Messiah. Nonetheless, the book is at the same time very invitational and inclusive to a Greek audience, which surprises some. Today’s message looks at how God was not only fulfilling the Scriptures but also revealing himself to others in the world, sometimes even by-passing those we would assume would be the primary audience, making the gospel a message for all people, but especially a message for those who are hungry for God and willing to pursue him at any cost. Truly Jesus is it, not just for a few but for the whole world.

This was another encounter of Jesus in a private conversation not contained in the other biographies of Matthew, Mark & Luke. Once again Jesus was speaking to someone of questionable background and faith. While this person was socially elite, he was not spiritually elite. That was always a problem for the Pharisees, but what happened in this man’s life was no less important to him or his family, and it highlights the fact that the heart of God is for anyone who receives the Son.

John 4:1-42***28 May 2023***

Two weeks ago we read about Nicodemus, the first of seven conversations only recorded in the Gospel of John but left out of the other biographies of Jesus (Matthew, Mark and Luke). This week we pick up in the second conversation with an unnamed Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well, outside of town in the middle of nowhere. Everything about her said she was a nobody and yet Jesus clearly went out of his way to introduce her to THE WAY. As the second of seven discourses, she set the tone for the other five, all nobodies, who took the gospel of eternal life to everybody they knew. While Jesus never excluded Nicodemus (the Somebody) it was repeatedly the nobody from nowhere that took the message of eternal life to the ends of the earth, and to you and me. It is this message that becomes one of the secondary themes of John’s Gospel, that Christianity has reached the ends of the earth not by personality, popularity, power or high position, but through the witness of the nobody, from nowhere, whose credibility was suspect, and who had nothing to lose, this is the Way!

What does Jesus’ zeal for the temple and worship have to do with us? When we read the word temple we tend to think about brick and mortar but the imagery of the New Testament moves us from brick and mortar to Jesus, and later in the writings of Paul, to the indwelling Holy Spirit in God’s people. The zeal of Jesus for the temple of God was not about protecting bricks and mortar but passion for the worship of the Father, and the invitation to the nations to know God. I am convinced that some of the greatest heroes of heaven will be the nameless and faceless of church history, people who plowed fallow ground, who laid ground work for the gospel in hard places, and who often wondered if they made a difference. Everyone likes to win, and most of us like being heroes, but we forget that without the assist, the goals and the victories would never happen. Today as we look at the ministry of John the Baptist we are reminded that without his foundational work the gospel would not have been possible.

It probably sounds crazy to hear, but this chapter is a powerful analogy of the ceremony of triumph, common in Roman celebrations for generals who returned victorious in battle. This event in particular, almost verbatim, followed the ceremony used by Rome to celebrate Titus some forty years later, after he ransacked Jerusalem and destroyed it’s temple in AD70. The irony, it was actually the death of Jesus, on the cross, at the hands of Rome, that eventually lead to Rome’s undoing, and the subduing of Rome by the early church, which at the time of Mark’s writing would not happen for another 300+ years. In Mark 15 it was Good Friday in Jerusalem, but Rome had no idea that Sunday was coming.

As people who live in the Western materialistic world we pride ourselves on our good sense, that we are people who live very pragmatic lives, and whose advances in science and technology are offered as proof of that good sense. This is often one of the biggest challenges to faith, even calling it blind faith, when we are called upon to live, or do what is out of step with this kind of common sense that rules our culture and society. Yet in reality, most of what we do in responding to our own desires defies good sense too, and yet our feelings are highly valued. What do you do when God sense defies your good sense?

Throughout this series we have seen how the misunderstanding of the Bible and Jesus’ ministry had been rooted in the well-meaning traditions of God’s people, but whose value had actually exceeded the Scripture in the minds of the people. This chapter is full of reminders that we must continually come to God afresh to hear Jesus, and to hear the word of the Lord, over our personal preferences and our cultural trappings. It reminds us that both those deeply rooted in tradition, and those who are married to the spirit of the age, will find their understanding of God deeply flawed when they are abandoned to something other than God’s word as their standard.

In our series, Unveiled Mysteries, we have pointed out that the mystery of the gospel was being slowly revealed through all sixteen chapters. In this chapter we note that Jesus often spoke in parables in the gospels, but why, especially when the invitation was to all people to come? The answer for the mystery and the parables is one in the same, that the message of the gospel was so subversive to everyone. It was subversive to the religious people because it did not fit their theology, and to the rulers of this world because it would undermine their power. Nonetheless, the gospel was a bright light that could not be hidden, and its message is a test of every heart who hears it.

The authority of Jesus is often discussed in terms of his position as the Messiah, but the clear message of Mark is that Jesus’ authority is not like that of the Pharisees, the Herodians, or the Romans. Jesus’ authority is not power granted by position or station of life. Jesus’ authority flows from his personhood, and that not simply by his divinity, but also in his humanity, which overflowed with mercy, justice and humility. Likewise, Mark points that it his this imparted character and nature that produces the same result in the life of his disciples.

*Matthew 14:22-33**1 January 2023***

What “strongholds” will NOT hold you back in 2023?

My Confession ~ I confess that I will no longer permit the devil to have a foothold in my mind and emotions. I am employing the use of the power of God, the weapons of the Holy Spirit, and the name of Jesus. I command the devil to withdraw his lies from my mind and emotions and to flee from me! The enemy has no right to operate inside my mind, and I refuse to allow his operation in my soul to continue. I will believe right, think right, and renew my mind daily with the Word of God. I am permanently set free from lies that have controlled me. From this moment forward, I am dominated by the TRUTH of God’s Word (the Truth that I know sets me free and fight the lies with the Truth)! Lies that have held me captive for so long have no more power over me! I declare all of this by faith in Jesus’ name!

*Mark 1:1-45 **1 January 2023***

The Gospel of Mark has the obvious story to tell as a biography of the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah, but it also has a peculiar story to tell, different than all the other three gospels that make it unique. As the shortest of the gospels it skips over the details of Jesus’ birth and opens with the ministry of John the Baptist as herald of the great pronouncement, the kingdom of God is at hand.

Through this series we have examined several prophecies about the Messiah, learning how they fit together both in their original historical context, and in unfolding of Messianic prophecy. Today, Micah 5 wraps our series by looking at the promise of the messiah to be born in Bethlehem as foreshadowing of the fulfillment of the promises made to David, and what we have to look forward to in the final revelation of his kingdom.

*Isaiah 9.1-21**11 December 2022***

Over the last two weeks we have been looking at the Messianic prophecies, as the promises kept by faithful God, in the midst of humanity’s failures and unfaithfulness. With each week we have learned more about what God has been doing in his world to keep his word and to rescue us, thus giving us a hope and future. This week, we build on the prophecies that we studied over the past two weeks to clarify who this child is, how he can make all the difference, and why he can crush the head of the serpent and give us peace.
