A recent study, based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), has found that women who rarely engage in sexual activity have a 70% higher risk of dying compared to those who have sex at least once per week. Additionally, individuals with depression who had sex much less than once per week had a 197% higher risk of dying than those who had sex around once per week. These findings were published in the Journal of Psychosexual Health. Frequent sex has been shown to offer numerous health benefits. It helps reduce stress and improve mood through the release of endorphins and oxytocin. It can also boost the immune system, making the body more resistant to infections and illnesses. Regular sexual activity promotes cardiovascular health by increasing heart rate and circulation. It enhances sleep quality due to the release of the hormone prolactin, which is associated with relaxation. Frequent sex can also improve intimacy and strengthen relationships, contributing to overall emotional well-being. In this episode, Dr. Susan Oakley & Holly want to know do you: Schedule or Sizzle? How often do you get frisky? A) Daily B) A few times a week C) Weekly D) A few times a month E) Rarely/Never Tune in for some fun and fabulous insights. Thank you, ladies, for listening. Periods can be annoying when they arrive unexpectedly, like when you’re all set for a beach day or a swim. Swimming on your period is one of those things we've all got questions about, right? And there's two big ones. Firstly: can you swim while on your period? And secondly: what should you wear to protect yourself while swimming on your period? • Is it safe to swim on your period? Swimming on your period is completely safe. Just choose a tampon or menstrual product that feels comfortable and fits your lifestyle needs. • Can I get a vaginal infection from swimming on my period? You can develop itchiness, a burning sensation, or a yeast infection from staying in a wet bathing suit for too long. It’s a good idea to change into dry clothes after you swim, and if you experience any of these symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider. • How often should you change it? Change your tampon as soon as you’re done swimming, or every 4 to 8 hours while you are swimming. A wet, used tampon can be a breeding ground for bacteria — which can lead to toxic shock syndrome (TSS). You’ll want to make sure you’re being safe and mindful. Ultimately, it is completely safe and hygienic to swim whilst on your period. Although there are some special considerations to think about before you go swimming - like taking extra tampons, pads, or period undies to change into after swimming - being on your period should not stop you from enjoying summer and taking a dip! Tune in for some fun and fabulous insights. Thank you, ladies, for listening. Always feel free to ask Dr. Oakley any women’s health questions at any time. If you’re a natural mosquito magnet, it makes sense to do what you can to lower the risk of being bitten. The foods you eat may play a role in how attractive you are to mosquitoes. So, what attracts Mosquitoes? Beer, bananas and ketchup as well as the smell of lotions, perfumes, and sweat draws mosquitoes in but supposedly there are certain foods that these pests don’t like. Mosquito-repelling foods: • Garlic, onions, and apple cider vinegar, when consumed, are said to change the way you smell and make you less detectable to mosquitoes. • Tomatoes, beans, and lentils as well as other foods rich in thiamine are said to release a smell that repels mosquitoes and other bugs. • Grapefruit, oranges, and lemons are all citrus fruits that mosquitoes apparently aren’t fond of smelling. Other ways to prevent mosquito bites include: • Wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants • Covering strollers and baby carriers with mosquito netting • Planning outdoor events when mosquito activity is low (they’re most active from dusk to dawn) • Make sure your window screens are not ripped or torn • Keep entry doors and garage doors closed when not in use It goes without saying but we’ll say it, anyway, speak with your doctor about which insect repellent they recommend for you and your family members before making a purchase. Tune in for some fun and fabulous insights. Thank you, ladies, for listening. Always feel free to ask Dr. Oakley any women’s health questions at any time. If more people around you seem to be coming down with Covid lately, that’s because infections are indeed on the rise nationally. Covid infections have historically spiked over the summer, in part because of an increase in travel and people congregating indoors, where it’s cooler. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that COVID test positivity rates and emergency room visits are steadily on the rise. Dr. Susan Oakley & Holly will go over what to do if you get COVID this summer and tips if you’re on any medication/antibiotics and end up getting a UTI or yeast infection during COVID. If you contract COVID, it’s a good idea to first test yourself at home with an antigen test. If your test is negative, you should test yourself again in 24 hours because it can take a few days for the virus to become detectable in your sinuses. If you’re concerned about your symptoms, reach out to your primary care physician or visit an urgent care to get a PCR test ― these are more sensitive and catch a higher percentage of cases. Thank you for listening. Always feel free to ask Dr. Oakley any women’s health questions at any time. Please send in your comments, questions, and suggestions for future topics at TheLadyBodPod@gmail.com.
As the temps heat up, some men swear the heat has a flaming effect on their peens, adding inches in length and girth down below. In a man’s world of growers and showers, consider it nature’s way of bringing some summer penis loving your way. While there might be some truth to the idea that penises appear bigger in the heat, there isn’t enough research on the subject for doctors to say whether it’s absolutely, completely true. But your testicles absolutely do hang a little lower when it’s hot, though. If you’re a summer penis skeptic, let’s see what our man Bruuuuuuce has to say about the summer penis in this episode with Dr. Oakley & Holly. The boob sweat struggle is real!!! Aside from being an uncomfortable side-effect of wearing a sports bra that compresses your bust to your chest, boob sweat carries the added insult of encouraging red rashes, yeast overgrowth and potential skin tags (small, soft, skin-colored growths that hang off the skin and look a bit like warts). Why does the sweat between my breasts smell? What can I do about sweat under my breasts? Dr. Oakley & Holly will go your questions and cover what products or items are good for dealing with under boob sweat? Why call it boob sweat when "humidititties" is clearly more accurate?!😅 Ballsy Boob and Thigh Deodorant, Quick Drying Liquid Powder, Protects from Sweat, Odor, and Irritation 3.4 oz.- https://www.amazon.com/Ballsy-Deodorant-Drying-Protects-Irritation/dp/B09KWH7DPN Thank you for listening. Some common summer bad habits can lead to irritation or wreak havoc on your precious vagina, that can increase the chances of developing a fungal or bacterial infection. Question: Dr. Oakley, I heard on TikTok that Mucinex can help you get pregnant. Is that true? Let's start at the beginning: Mucinex is designed to treat cold and flu symptoms, and there's nothing in the packaging or directions that says you should take this to help you get pregnant. Medications like Mucinex, which contain the active ingredient guaifenesin, thin the mucus throughout your body. One theory, though it is unproven, is that it could thin the mucus in the cervix, making it easier for sperm to pass through more easily. If you are taking these medications, be sure to discuss their potential impact on birth control and fertility with your provider. In this episode, Dr. Oakley & Holly will chat about the viral media question, “Does Mucinex increase your chances of getting pregnant?” Thank you for listening. “A ‘ghost poop’ is a term used to describe when one’s stool sinks to the bottom of the toilet and seemingly vanishes without a trace,” in other words, if you’ve ever gone to the bathroom and then looked into the toilet, only to see your feces disappear, it means that you’ve experienced the elusive “ghost poop” — and the same thing goes if you’ve wiped and there’s nothing on the toilet paper. This type of poop, where you feel like you've passed something, but nothing is visible in the toilet or when wiping, may suggest that you are one of the healthiest individuals out there. It is a sign that your body is receiving adequate amounts of fiber and fatty acids while maintaining proper circadian rhythms aligned with nature. If you don’t find yourself having many — or any — ghost poops, you shouldn’t be alarmed, either. In fact, having ghost poop every day isn’t always ideal, as you are unable to see the changes in your feces if it just disappears all the time. Do you ever look at your poop before you flush? Dr. Oakley & Holly will tell if they do in this episode and you can answer this question on our FB poll on the Lady Bod Pod FB page. Thank you, ladies, for listening. If you’re in the mood to try something new and eccentric, you can almost always count on TikTok for inspiration. So, the idea of vabbing is inserting clean fingers into your clean vagina and dabbing your vaginal fluids onto your pressure points (wrists, neck, and behind the ears), and using it as perfume. According to Healthline, our vag fluids contain pheromones and its smell is our “sexual scent of attraction.” Who knew? Vabbing had already been written about in books prior to going viral online, but TikTok has put the idea in front of the masses. TikToker Mandy Lee was the first to bring vabbing to social media, and now more and more women are revealing stories of men falling at their feet thanks to the unconventional seduction method. Vabbing works on the theory of pheromones. Pheromone research is nothing new, and the study of human chemical communication has been widely investigated. It was once believed that all mammals – humans included – could attract a mate of the same species by secreting signals through scent. However, its role in humans remains uncertain and unproven. What are the health implications of vabbing? No matter your feelings on the subject, if you want to try vabbing, you’ll need to practice good hygiene. It’s important to be aware of your sexual status when it comes to sharing your bodily fluids. Let’s not forget that STIs still exist. Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over some of the tips on vabbing in this episode, like: • ● Washing your hands both before and after • ● Not allowing areas you’ve ‘vabbed’ to touch anything or anyone • ● Wiping down gym equipment before and after use • ● Refraining from vabbing if you’re on your period or have an STI • ● Making sure you get checked by a professional if you think you sense an unusual or bad odor Thank you, ladies, for listening. This really comes down to personal preference. There are no hard and fast rules, but most people tend to have a separate hand towel in the bathroom for drying freshly washed hands. It also means any guests visiting your toilet don’t have to dry their hands on your bath towel. You might think your towel is fine because you only use it on your clean body but think again. Even your freshly washed skin can harbor germs and bacteria that will transfer to your towel when you dry your skin. Additionally, bathrooms are warm, humid spaces that make them the perfect breeding ground for bacteria — meaning there could also be airborne bacteria and molds landing on your towel. If you typically use the same bath towel for a few days at a time, you're not alone. According to Good Housekeeping, almost 50% of the people surveyed said they go for a full week before they retire a towel. As for towels that you take outside the house, such as to use at the gym, the pool, or the beach, Dr. Oakley recommends washing them after every use as they come in contact with sweat, airborne bacteria, and other contaminants. Most of us would agree that there’s something very comforting about wrapping yourself in a big, warm, fluffy bath towel after a bath or shower. It’s less comforting, though, to think about the germs and bacteria that may be breeding on your towels. If your towel smells, that's a warning to wash it sooner rather than later, so if you catch a musty whiff before you start to dry off, err on the side of caution and toss it into the laundry basket. Dr. Oakley and Holly share in this episode how often they wash their bath towels. So, listen up LBP besties, washing your towels is seriously easy. So, there’s no need to stress. It's just a case of knowing how to wash towels effectively, that's all. So, for best results, here's what you need to do. • Wash white towels at a high temperature (this helps to keep them looking nice and bright) • Clean colored towels on a warm (not hot) cycle • Only use fabric softener sparingly as it can impact the absorbency of towels — white vinegar is an effective alternative. • The best way to dry towels is in the tumble dryer with a couple of dryer balls MAD-LOVE going out to our wonderful Sponsor UTIVA!!! There’s no doubt that a keto diet is a great way to lose weight, but it can also hit you straight in the vagina. Have you recently started keto and noticed an unpleasant vaginal odor? You may have developed keto crotch. Keto crotch is a noticeable change in vaginal odor after starting the keto diet. While there isn’t a lot of scientific research on this topic, plenty of women report that they experience keto crotch. Changing to a high-fat and low-carb diet shifts your body to burn fat instead of sugar for energy. Keto triggers profound metabolic changes that support weight loss, balance hormone levels, and improve cognition. The good news is that once your body adjusts to burning fat, keto crotch will go away. Here’s what Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over in this episode: • Yes, it’s 100% true that eating a keto diet can mess your vagina’s pH • A keto diet is based on the consumption of high protein and fat, and low carbs. This entire thing might be great when it comes to weight loss, but when you talk about the pH level of your vagina, it fails miserably. • How to get rid of keto crotch • Experiencing keto crotch doesn’t mean keto isn’t right for you. As your body adjusts to the keto diet, unpleasant smells around your crotch area will diminish and there are plenty of steps you can take in the meantime to reduce symptoms. • Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables. • Green leafy veggies like spinach, collard greens, and mustard greens are rich sources of chlorophyll, a bright green pigment. Chlorophyll is also known as an “internal deodorizer” and helps with keto-breath and other keto-related body odors. If keto crotch is linked to pH imbalance or changes to the bacterial ecosystem of the vagina, a probiotic supplement can reduce odors and support your vaginal health like from Utiva Health. If you recently took a peek down south and were surprised (to say the least) to see wrinkles, you're far from alone. Everyone has wrinkles there. Visible signs of aging, like crow's feet and gray hairs, are a common part of getting older. And just like the rest of your body, your vagina and vulva also change as you age. During your 40s and 50s, your body starts producing less estrogen as you enter perimenopause, the transitional period before menopause. Estrogen keeps vaginal collagen plump and moist and helps provide good blood flow to the area. However, during perimenopause, decreasing estrogen levels can make vaginal tissue thinner and less elastic. Your clitoris may shrink, and your labia may become less full, potentially changing in color, and starting to sag. A decrease in collagen may contribute to sagging skin all over your body, including your vulva, and weaker pelvic floor muscles. Still, there are ways to help you keep your vagina healthy, like doing Kegel exercises and using lube or a vaginal moisturizer. While it's normal for aging vaginas to change, that doesn't mean you have to deal with uncomfortable side effects. If you have any concerns about your vaginal health, consult with a healthcare provider. A big Shout-Out to our fabulous Sponsor UTIVA!!! The only normal out there is what’s normal for you. Also, can POISON IVY spread to your vagina? If there’s one thing that makes us envy men (apart from the fact that they don’t have to suffer period and labor pains), it’s the fact that they can stand and pee in public restrooms. The idea of sitting on a toilet seat with your bare skin and especially not knowing the hygiene condition of the toilet or how the person before you used the toilet…you can feel a little squeamish about it. You asked, Dr. Oakley: • Should I Use a Toilet Seat Cover? • Can sitting on a public toilet cause harm to the skin? • I’ve read that squatting while using the restroom can be harmful to pelvic health. Is this true? What does the pelvic floor consist of? • Sphincter control, [which refers to the] opening and closing of the urinary and anal sphincters. • Sexual function (“Yes, better pelvic health means better orgasms!”) • Stabilization, [which] stabilizes your pelvis, hips, and low back. • Internal organs support (“Don't strain when you pee or poop-- you could cause a prolapse!”) • “Sump pump,” [which] circulates lymph, blood, oxygen, and nutrients. One thing you shouldn't do. Hover over the seat while you pee. Doing so puts you in a partial squatting position, which can weaken your pelvic floor muscles over time. It also makes it harder for your bladder to fully empty. That can increase the risk for problems like incontinence or urinary tract infections. The only thing more miserable than a urinary tract infection (UTI) is when it happens again, and again, and again. But, good news, there are ways to prevent post-menopause RECURRENT URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS. But sometimes urinary urgency, burning, and that “I gotta go NOW” feeling is NOT FROM an infection but need a completely different kind of treatment. You need to know the difference. Dr. Oakley also stresses that transposition of fecal matter and hormone changes make you more susceptible to UTIs. PSA: wipe front to back, ladies! Swollen lips? Unusual discharge? Burning sensations? Your vagina could be allergic to something... We call it, “VALLERGIES.” Vaginal allergies, or allergic vaginitis, is an irritation of the vagina or vulva caused by an allergic reaction. One of the major symptoms of an allergic reaction is vulvitis, which is inflammation of the vulva or vagina. Some symptoms can include: • Vaginal burning or itching • Vaginal swelling • Abnormal discharge • Cracks on the skin of the vulva • Blisters on the vulva If you are currently experiencing mysterious bumps, rashes, itching, and redness, or have in the past, you may be wondering what the culprit is. Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over some of the symptoms of a vaginal allergic reaction and common things that you may be allergic to. If you're suffering from irritation in the vagina or on the vulva, seek input from your gynecological healthcare provider to rule out related conditions like STIs, yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, or a drop in estrogen. Then, you can see if vaginal allergies might be what's happening with you. Thank you for listening. Some women have two vaginas; the condition is called 'uterus didelphys'. Uterus didelphys is a congenital condition where you’re born with two uteruses. It’s commonly called a double uterus. It can cause pregnancy complications and painful menstruation. Some people have surgery to treat uterus didelphys, but most cases don’t require treatment. How is uterus didelphys diagnosed? Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over those steps in this episode, like your healthcare provider may diagnose a double uterus during a routine pelvic exam after feeling two cervixes or two vaginas. They’ll likely order additional imaging tests to confirm uterus didelphys. How does it affect you? Apart from the inconvenience of potentially having to deal with two periods, many women with a double uterus have normal sex lives, pregnancies, and deliveries, double-up, ugh, ugh... Ugh! (Like, Sir Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got Back) Take a moment and imagine the horror of two periods...in one month. Find out more in this episode. Thank you for listening. Did you use to routinely have orgasms? Do you miss your orgasm? Would you like to have orgasms again? Yessssss!!! Dr. Oakley & Holly will chat on how you can overcome the negative symptoms of menopause and rediscover the joy of sex? “Love Your Body” and improving body confidence can be a simple way to get your sexy back. During menopause, your estrogen levels take a sharp decline, affecting your interest in sex, ability to become aroused or adequately stimulated through touch, and making it difficult to reach orgasm during sexual activity. This hormone depletion leads to vaginal atrophy, the thinning and weakening of vaginal tissue, which makes intercourse uncomfortable, increases the risk of UTIs and other infections, and causes tissue tearing and bleeding. So Lube It Up and moisturizer! Unlike some symptoms of menopause that lessen over time, such as hot flashes, the dryness from vaginal atrophy tends to continue and worsen unless treated. Using an over-the-counter moisturizer every 2 or 3 days counteracts vaginal dryness while also providing lubrication for the friction of sexual activity. You asked Dr. Oakley: Why do UTIs occur in menopausal women? As you age, your vaginal tissue thins, making it more likely to cause infection. UTIs risk is much higher throughout perimenopause and menopause due to the drop in estrogen levels; the hormone estrogen allows good bacteria to grow and helps maintain an acidic environment, keeping the bad bacteria out. Incontinence and bladder prolapse are also other factors that cause UTIs in postmenopausal women. Dr. Susan Oakley highly recommends Utiva's clinically proven line of urinary tract infection prevention supplements to her patients and she takes the fabulous products herself. Dr. Oakley & Holly believes SEXY is self-expression. Feeling sexy is a state of mind. Sexy is being unapologetically you. Ladies, our husbands/partners love us. They find us sexy by just being ourselves. They married/ are with you because they were attracted to you. Because they found you sexy. And we’re sure there were some physical aspects of that, but there’s a whole lot more to it. It’s the whole package. And we know sometimes it’s hard to feel sexy when your body has changed with time and after having kids from what it once was. But when you step into owning your sexuality and being confident in who you are now, you can be sexy. Sexy is being unapologetically you. Feeling sexy is a state of mind. There are a lot of factors that go into getting that mindset, but the most important is having good energy and feeling good about yourself — being happy with who you are. As women we are sold the story that sexiness is being a certain age or size, but I don’t buy it. Sexiness comes from within. Yes, a nice compliment from our partners helps, but it wouldn’t be enough to sustain the feeling that I AM sexy! I feel sexiest when I feel good about myself. When I’m being brave, taking chances, and striving to achieve something. I know I am sexy because showing up, stepping up, and getting sh!t done—that’s sexy. Inner power is sexy. You’re sexy, girl!! Don’t you ever forget it!! 👑🌟💫🙌💖🌷. Thank you for listening. Please send in your comments, questions and suggestions for future topics TheLadyBodPod@gmail.com. Have you ever been concerned about the way you smell... down there? There are few things more stressful than running to the bathroom thinking, "I can smell my discharge through my pants — can everyone else?!" If you think you caught a whiff of something funky down there, you might not be imagining it. Odor tends to come from sweat - the vulva and vagina have sweat glands, like elsewhere on your body. And the scent may change as our menstrual cycle progresses, in response to hormones, or at the end of the day. Noticing vaginal odor, if it's your normal one, does not mean you don't have good hygiene or (god forbid) should start douching. No need to buy those scented sprays, either - the chemicals may give you a bad reaction, or lead to copious amounts of discharge. Your vagina should smell like...a vagina. So how do you know if your smell is normal or not? Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over some of the reasons why your vagina could be smelling, and when you should check in with your doctor about it. Thank you for listening. Please send in your comments, questions and suggestions for future topics at TheLadyBodPod.com.
We love that we are bringing attention to vaginal health but this idea that your vagina is dirty and should smell like a flower or taste like fresh pineapples is ridiculous. We had a few listeners asking if the Lemme gummies are good for your vagina or are we being swindled? This product suggests that women need to smell a certain way—and that’s just not normal and could also lead you worrying about the smell of your own vagina, when it is completely normal. The vagina is actually a self-cleaning oven. Because vaginas clean themselves, no special products are needed to maintain hygiene. Dr. Oakley suggest rinsing the vulva off with warm water is enough to keep vaginas healthy (unscented soaps are safe too); mild soap for body areas with hair, the inner thighs, and the rectum is all you need. I mean, do we talk about penises like this? Nooooooo… LOL - From Kourtney Kardashian's Lemme to Gweneth Paltrow's Goop, are celebrity supplements actually worth the hype??!! Holly & Dr. Oakley will go over this very question in this episode. Thank you for listening. Please send in your comments, questions and suggestions for future topics at TheLadyBodPod@gmail.com.
The stomach flu, which causes intense but sorta short episodes of vomiting and diarrhea — with or without a brief period of fever, chills, and body aches — is spreading rapidly. Seriously, wash your dang hands: Norovirus is primarily spread when traces of a sick person’s poop or vomit sneak into our mouths via our hands or food they’ve prepared. However, the virus also spreads through aerosols that hang around after someone pukes, so masking in public bathrooms is not the worst idea, either. In this episode Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over some tips to survive this awful bug, like: Staying hydrated is key: While nauseated, sip water or an electrolyte drink every 15 to 30 minutes, and if you feel like lying down afterward, prop yourself up to reduce reflux. There’s no need to slam a liter of fluid at a time — you just want to get enough in to produce some urine at least every six hours. Wait until you have an appetite to start eating solids, and start with bland foods like bananas and dry toast. Alcohol-based sanitizer doesn’t kill norovirus all that well, so clean your hands with soap and water. And clean shared surfaces with a bleach-based product — only a few virus particles are needed to cause infection, and it can live for weeks on surfaces, so be as thorough as you can. If you develop bloody diarrhea, you can’t keep enough fluids down to make some urine, or your symptoms last longer than three days, it’s time to seek medical care. Thank you for listening. Happy 2023 LBP listeners!!! Apparently wearing only red undies in the month of January will ensure a year filled with passion and love, and wearing a pair of yellow undies will attract happiness and financial success. So you pick: for love or for money? In some countries, like Bolivia, your undies have the power to determine what the New Year may bring depending on which color you wear. Blue – harmony and health. Green – better luck than the previous year. White – peace, joy, and happiness. Orange – professional success. Purple – inspiration. Navigating how to enjoy the holidays on your period can be tough because, while you’d love nothing more than to visit with your family for Christmas, or get all dressed up for your office Christmas party or for New Year’s Eve, your body’s practically begging you to stay in pajamas all day and eat gingerbread cookies straight off the platter. It’s PMS with a festive twist, for sure, but don’t let it stop you from having a holly jolly good time. In this episode, Holly & Dr. Oakley will go over how to party confidently on your period and what to put in your clutch for a night out of fun! Thank you for listening. The holiday season brings out all those holiday dinners, invites, and plus 1 invites. When it comes to those family gatherings, you hear the, you’re getting to be too old to be single noise. Now this the time of year people get sensitive about being single. Whether you are re-entering the dating scene after a long hiatus, or maybe just continuing the search for "the right one", your girlfriends, your sister and maybe your mother will have no end of advice on how to meet the love of your life. The last thing you need with a new relationship is a new infection. According to the CDC, the age group in which STI rates are rising most rapidly is adults at midlife and beyond. This is a huge surprise to many people whom seem to think that chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV and herpes are limited to 20- and 30-year-olds that are having random hook-ups. Most guys hate using condoms - How many of those (lame) excuses have you heard? But Dr. Oakley have seen and treated a lot of infections in women who decided to skip the condom “just this once.” Do not depend on the man to be prepared. The savvy single woman keeps her own stash of male condoms on hand. Be sure they are all marked “extra-large.” WINK In this episode, Dr. Oakley and Holly go over some practical steps you can take to minimize your risk like: • Familiarize yourself with the most common STIs, and understand how they are transmitted. • Learn about screening and how to protect yourself, even if a condom is out of the question. • Consider getting an HPV vaccine even if you are over age 45 Thank you for listening. Between long work days and packed calendars, it can be surprisingly easy to forget about taking care of yourself. Sometimes, when we’re feeling stressed and running around taking care of everybody else, the healthiest thing we can do is to stop and consider how we can take care of ourselves. Most women do not realize that there is such a thing as Pelvic Floor Physical therapy or why it is important to have a Healthy Pelvic Floor. Your pelvic floor muscles are responsible for everything from supporting your organs, to helping you pee and poop, to allowing for pleasurable penetrative sex, so it makes sense that you might be thrown for a loop after you pushed out a baby. Issues like muscle spasms down there are more common than you’d think, and it’s important to pay attention to your pelvic floor — especially after pregnancy. It might seem frivolous, but neglecting to slowww dowwwn and simply make time to get it checked can lead to serious resting witch face (WINK). Tried it all, and are still struggling with persistent pain? You’re not alone. Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over these intimate issues in this episode and how you can make your first appointment. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's a time to remember those impacted by the disease and promote early detection. Repeatedly, we hear the same questions and concerns from women about their breast health. Sugar causes cancer; underwire bras or shape wear shouldn’t be worn; don’t use deodorant; if there is no family history of breast cancer, I won’t get it; I’m too young to get breast cancer … we hear the same misconceptions over and over. Social media doesn’t help. Friends share fabricated cancer horror stories, and the epidemic of bad information intensifies. Everyone CHECK YOUR TITTIES because other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. Let’s start with the fact that vaginal moisturizers and lubricants are not the same thing. Lubricants do not alter vaginal tissues; they just provide a slippery barrier to reduce friction at the time of intercourse. A moisturizer, on the other hand, is intended to change the water content of the cells (hence “moisturizer”), resulting in tissues that are more elastic, thicker, and have the enhanced ability to produce fluid. From breastfeeding to menopause, vaginal dryness can happen at any stage in life. How can you get back to lubricating naturally? What lubricants are best for you and your body? What can your partner do to help? Vaginal moisturizers, lubricants, and vaginal estrogen can be helpful tools for improving sexual wellbeing, but how many of us know how to choose the right ones? Being asked to be in the delivery room with someone is a pretty high honor. In most cases, it's a partner and/or fellow parent-to-be who gets picked, so they can support their significant other and witness the birth of their child. For whatever reason, mothers-in-law seem to be requesting front-row seats in the delivery room lately, and it appears that daughters-in-law everywhere are pretty much horrified by the "trend." It’s an incredibly intimate act and can be extremely sexy, if done right! In general, there are two types of people in this world: those who hate the idea of touching feet at all — and everyone else. If you’re happy to touch someone’s feet and, ideally, put their toes in your mouth, you’re probably into toe sucking. Toe sucking, also known as shrimping, is another form of oral sex. Instead of sucking, nibbling, and licking genitals, though, you or your partner travel farther south to your tootsies. While some people have an immediate “Ewe!” To the idea, plenty of other people love sucking on someone’s toes or getting their toes sucked. In this episode Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over these questions: • What is toe sucking? • Is toe sucking always sexual? • Do women like their toes sucked? • How to suck toes… Thank you for listening. Dr. Oakley and Holly chat about the current baby formula situation and the difference between breast feeding and feeding babies’ formula. A nationwide shortage of baby formula is proving stressful for families. Mothers Milk Bank has been fielding more calls from people interested in donating breast milk due to the shortage. The milk bank serves families with a prescription for human breast milk, which means the organization prioritizes medically fragile babies. But the milk bank is also able to help others on a short-term basis. The FDA is taking emergency steps to increase the supply of baby formula after a plant closure led to shortages. Federal policy may have contributed to over-reliance on a handful of formula suppliers. Business Insider says Nestle is flying baby formula from Europe to the United States to help ease the baby formula shortage. The formula is coming from Switzerland and the Netherlands. A doula and a midwife have a unique and important role to play in your birth plan. A midwife is a specialist who’s qualified to deliver babies and care for a woman and her baby during pregnancy, labor and after the birth. A doula, on the other hand, can offer support, guidance and practical help throughout your birth and beyond. Some doulas may be trained midwives, but the term itself refers to a role that’s not medically qualified. The purpose of World Doula Week is to empower doulas all over the world to improve the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of women, newborns and families in birth and in the postpartum period. Also, you asked- Should I Eat My Placenta? If you’ve ever had questions about the benefits of using your placenta - and the ways to do it - look no further than our conversation about it in this episode with Dr. Oakley and special guest Mandy Dalhover, Midwife/CNM. When we have these intimate conversations, maybe with a girlfriend or online, most women are pretty well-versed on their bloating, cramping or sore boobs. But when it comes to periods/menstrual conversations, it always seems to lead us to period poop. So let’s talk about that in this episode with Dr. Oakley & Holly. We go over your questions about period poop in this episode like: 1. Why do we poop so much on our period? 2. Why does it feel like the worst poop ever? 3. Why can’t I poop on my period? 4. Does anyone have problems pooping if they are wearing a tampon? I do. Ugh Why does it feel like the worst poop ever?! From front to back are your bladder, your uterus, and your rectum. These organs are all spooning together, like 3 P’s in a pod (period, poop, and pee). Menstrual cramps can trigger the neighboring organs — if your uterus lays back a little, when you get menstrual cramps the pain can seem like it’s coming from your rectum and makes you feel like you have to go poop, even out of nowhere, UGH!!! UTIs are soooo annoying!!! If you haven’t had one (you go, girl) but were are almost certain that your sister, best friend, cousin, college roommate, mom has had one, is having one, or is about to have one. UGH… A UTI is an infection of your bladder and urethra. When this bacteria sneaks into the bladder or urethra, it can cause an infection. It’s more common in women because of our anatomy — our urethra is shorter than a dude’s, so the bacteria has a shorter distance to travel, and it’s closer to areas that might get a workout during sex. Even though UTIs are very common, it’s not something you should ignore (even if you can!) because it can spread upwards and cause a kidney infection, which can also be serious. So, what can you do to solve a problem like... burning pee??!!! Dr. Oakley and Holly will cover it all in this episode but depending on what’s causing your UTI(s), prevention is pretty straightforward. Be sure to: • Pee after sex • Stay hydrated • Pee whenever you have to, and make sure you ‘GO’ fully Maintain vaginal health with topical hormones and oral supplements as directed by your physician. Dr. Oakley loves and recommends Utiva to her patients and she takes it daily. What in the world is a normal period? This is a question we get ALL of the time so Dr. Oakley will tackle this topic head-on in this episode! As you’re probably very familiar with, menstruation tends to last between 3-7 days, and it’s accompanied by all sorts of fun stuff like cramping, mood swings, fatigue, and more! The good news is that the more familiar you get with what’s going on with your body, the better you can prepare for what comes along with each phase. So let’s go over some of these period topics, shall we? 1. Irregular Periods: Occasional irregular periods during various phases in a woman's life, such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, are normal and don't require intervention. However, irregularities that last longer than three months should be evaluated as they might have a more complex cause, like hormonal imbalance or thyroid disease. 2. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) When PMS symptoms become severe and include extreme psychological symptoms, like depression, irritability, anger, or apathy, they might signal a PMDD. Unlike PMS, this disorder is classified as a mental disorder that can interfere with women's daily activities and relationships. 3. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which is a hormonal disorder that can result in infrequent or missed periods among other symptoms, such as infertility, excessive hair growth, weight gain, or sleep disorders. Are there any other period things/questions you would like to ask Dr. Oakley? Feel free to email her at Theladybodpod@gmail.com. Thank you for listening. You’ve probably heard the term, and been intrigued. Yes, today, we’re talking about The Mommy Makeover! Let’s discuss what that term really means, and how extensive or involved it might be. As the name suggests, a “mommy makeover” is typically done after a woman is done having children and wants some assistance in restoring her pre-pregnancy shape. Mommy makeover is a term that encompasses a combination of the following surgical procedures: Labiaplasty, vaginal rejuvenation, vaginal tightening, liposuction, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and breast augmentation/lift. It’s clear in the world of vaginal surgery, that once you get past the headlines and Real Housewives-style drama of Los Angeles plastic surgeons offices, there is a real need here: women who are suffering – from urinary incontinence, prolapsed bladders, pain, discomfort, or just dissatisfaction during sex… and there are now options out there for you. Dr. Oakley and our special guest Dr. Ryan Wilson board certified plastic surgeon and reconstructive surgery with The Plastic Surgery Group – will cover “Mommy Makeovers” to Nip/Tuck/Vagina and just about everything in between, we take a deep dive into what it means to love our bodies as moms, and all the different ways we do it in this episode. Summer is the time for sand, sea and sweat, and because of that, your vagina needs extra care during these hot months. Our bodies, and in this case, our vaginas, do a great job of balancing themselves out; however, when you're lounging in a wet swimsuit, that balance can go out of whack. Chemicals from a pool and bacteria from the ocean and lakes get absorbed into your swimsuit's fabric. This creates a damp, warm place for budding germs to turn into a urinary tract infection (UTI), a bacterial overgrowth in the vagina known as bacterial vaginosis, or a yeast infection. Dr. Oakley will dive into how summer can take a toll on your lady parts and share the best summer tips for your lady bits. All of these infections are treatable, but best of all, easily preventable.
