Welcome to Fist Full of Dirt, the official podcast of Mossy Oak Properties hosted by Ronnie "Cuz" Strickland. Whether you own a small farm, lease land or just love hangin' in your backyard.. we’re all about the outdoor lifestyle and how to get the most from your time in God’s great Outdoors.
I asked y'all to send me the best hunting advice you've ever been given … and boy, did you deliver. In this episode, I'm reading through some of your stories and sharing a few lessons that have stuck with me through the years. Some are funny, some are sentimental and some might just change the way you hunt. Thank you for listening!

This week I made the trip up to 2nd Amendment Outdoors in Corinth, Mississippi to hang out with Kevin Cribley, better known around here as The Saddle Guy. We got into all things archery and saddle hunting: gear setups, comfort and safety. Kevin’s one of those fellas who’s tried it all and he’ll tell you straight what works and what doesn’t. If you’ve been curious about saddle hunting… or just love good hunting talk, this one’s worth your time in the stand.

This week on Fist Full of Dirt, I’m visiting with Jim Kuhn of The Roost Lodge and the brand new owners to talk about what’s next for one of the most beloved camps in turkey hunting. From decades of memories to fresh plans for the future, you’ll hear the full story… straight from the people keeping the spirit of The Roost alive. Change is in the air but some things stay exactly the same: good dirt, good folks and turkey hunts that feels like home.

Everybody’s got an opinion on what bucks do when the velvet comes off… coats start changing and food sources shift. But I wanted more than opinions, I wanted facts. That’s why I sat down with Dr. Bronson Strickland who’s got decades of real-time location data on whitetails.
Join us as we cut through the guesswork and talk about what the deer are actually doing during that transition window. From movement patterns to food preferences.. this is the kind of info that’ll make you a smarter hunter before you ever step in the woods.

This week I sat down with Madison Dixon from Mississippi State’s Agricultural Autonomy Institute. Now if that sounds fancy, it is .. but trust me, this is one of the most down to earth conversations you’ll hear about where drones and farming are headed. Madison’s not only an expert with over 1,800 hours in the air, he’s also a 5th generation Mississippi farmer.
We covered everything from using drones in agriculture, to how these “uncrewed aircraft systems” are changing the way we scout land, manage crops and even think about the outdoors.

This week I visited with Scot Evans, archery expert, bow shop owner and the man behind the wildly popular TikTok channel BowTok. If it’s got a string, a cam, or a release aid .. we covered it. From budget setups to high end gear, tuning tricks to common mistakes, Scot breaks down bows in a way that makes sense whether you’re brand new to the game or been slinging arrows for decades. Thanks for listening!

Back in the mid 90s we launched an outdoor TV show called Hunting the Country on TNN. Nobody knew it at the time, but it went on to run for two decades and became one of the longest standing hunting shows on national television.
What made it different? We kept it about regular folks, relatable hunts and real stories. Judging by the response when I asked if you wanted to hear the full story, a lot of you still remember setting the VCR and watching with your dad. This week I’m taking you behind the scenes of how Hunting the Country came to be, what made it work and why it still means so much to people today.

Jim Peeler didn’t grow up in the woods.. that came later in life. And when it did, God used it to put him on a path he never saw coming.
Today, he runs the Jungle Mobile Petting Zoo, a nonprofit that brings critters to special needs folks, law enforcement, first responders, veterans and more as a form of therapy and connection. Talk about a fist full of dirt!
Jim’s story is about second chances, stepping into your calling and the amazing things that can happen when you let Faith take the lead.

First time I ever went out west after elk, I was with a crew of southern rookies big on dreams and short on experience. (And funds) We hiked, we laughed, we got altitude sickness… and we didn’t kill a thing. But looking back, it turned into one of my favorite hunts ever. Sometimes the best trips aren’t about what’s in the freezer, they’re about the stories you bring home.

Well, we’re back… and so are the snakes. Part 2 of Cold Blooded Confessions picks up right where we left off, with more wild and weird snake stories from folks who lived to tell the tale. You’ll laugh, you’ll squirm, and you might even check your boots before steppin’ outside.
Now listen, if Part 1 didn’t show up for you last time, that’s on the Apple Podcasts gremlins, not us. But don’t worry, we tacked the whole first part onto the end of this one so you don’t miss a beat. Settle in, y’all. It’s about to get slithery.

In this episode, we’re kickin’ off Part 1 of our listener submitted snake tales. From blinds to barns, these stories had me laughin’, wincin’, and in one case, lookin’ around my feet just to be sure.
Y’all did not disappoint. So grab a chair, take a deep breath, and get ready for some honest-to-goodness snake chaos straight from the people who lived it.

This week on Fist Full of Dirt, we’ve got Keith Mark, fellow outdoorsman and founder of Hunter Nation, to talk about the proposed public land sale that had folks fired up across the country. Keith gives us the behind the scenes story of how they stood their ground with the rally cry “not an acre, not an inch”, and how going straight to the source stirred up a little controversy.
This conversation sets the record straight and reminds us why we’ve got to stay sharp when it comes to protecting what’s ours. Hopefully… we just dodged a bullet.

This week on Fist Full of Dirt, we’re joined by Dr. Mike Chamberlain.. wild turkey expert, lifelong hunter and the National Wild Turkey Federation Distinguished Professor at the University of Georgia. With all the rain we’ve been seeing, we had to ask, how’s this weather affecting our turkeys?
Dr. Chamberlain breaks down what’s happening in the woods, what it means for young poults and what we can do to help. It’s science meets storytelling with one of the most respected voices in the field.

This week, I’m back from a quick trip to Georgia where I had the joy of taking my three grandsons on a guided fishing trip with Captain Mark Smith of Reel Time Guide Services out on Lake Oconee. If you’ve ever fished that lake, you know it runs DEEP in some spots. Turns out, so did our conversation.
Captain Mark shares stories about his life, guiding folks in and out of the water, and what it means to truly connect with the next generation.

We asked and y’all delivered. This week on Fist Full of Dirt, we’re sharing some of the most powerful, funny and downright moving stories sent in by our listeners. From first birds to final hunts, quiet lessons to loud gobbles… these stories are what make turkey season special. They’re about family, faith, failure and finding something bigger than ourselves in the woods. Laureen helped pick a few that hit especially hard, and we’re reading them aloud for all to hear. Grab a seat (and maybe a tissue) … this one’s full of heart.

I’m back from the mountains of West Virginia, and let me tell you… this one’s gonna stick with me. I had the honor of hunting with Marine SgtMaj Chris Singley and spending time with 3-Star General Randy West, combat pilot, ordained minister and one of the most incredible men I’ve ever met. We laughed, we hunted and I witnessed firsthand the life changing work being done through Patriots Four, a place where wounded Veterans find healing in the outdoors. This one’s about way more than turkeys, it’s about purpose, service and the power of showing up for others.

Before he was a Sheriff and recipient of the Medal of Freedom, Mike was a boots on the ground Game Warden. He admits that bending the rules early in his hunting life gave him an advantage. We’re throwing it back to trapping season for this week’s episode, recorded right here in the Camo Cave with our good friend and trapping expert Alan Probst. Alan’s made the trip from Pennsylvania to the Deep South more times than we can count, and every visit brings real impact… on our land, our wildlife, and our understanding of both.
In this conversation, Alan shares valuable tips and techniques for managing predators and explains how effective trapping can directly improve your turkey flock. There’s no better teacher or ambassador for the trapping community, and if you care about land, legacy, and more birds…
this one’s a must-listen.

This week, I’m fresh back from The Roost in Nebraska, where I took two of my grandsons on a trip we’ll never forget. Middle grandson Matt wrapped up his Grand Slam with a beautiful Merriam, and Cranky, true to form, grabbed a Rio because, in his words, he “came to kill a turkey!”
After hearing the boys recap their hunts, I get a little sentimental. This trip marked the end of an era, as my longtime friend Jim Kuhn is retiring from outfitting and this was our last hunt together at The Roost.
Tune in for a mix of hunting stories, Roost memories, and plenty of laughs, as we celebrate friendships, family, and the places that mean the most. It’s not just about the turkeys, it’s about the people you chase them with.

This week we’re visiting with the guys from the Southern Outdoorsmen Podcast, Andrew Maxwell and Jacob Myers. They originally came to town to interview me for their show… but of course, I had to bring them into the Camo Cave and turn the mic around.

I’m back from Florida, with two of my grandsons by my side, and it was one for the books. We didn’t bring home any Osceolas, but we had some heart‑pounding encounters and a surprise discovery of what might be Florida’s best buffet according to Cranky.
Sure, no turkeys fell, but watching these boys learn, grow, and share in the tradition made this trip one of my most memorable. Tune in to hear all about it!

This week on Fist Full of Dirt we’re telling stories inspired by a recent photo I posted of an old hunter’s chair I found in the woods while scouting for a new spot. That post received thousands of comments that were very long and sincere. Absolutely fascinating to us so tomorrow we’re going to read some of those and talk about it. Some very uplifting and heartfelt hunters shared some precious memories. #merrychristmas

This week on Fist Full of Dirt it’s our first ever waterfowl discussion. Our guest, Caleb Westmoreland, was just a little guy when the Hunting the Country camo cameras followed him, his Dad and Grandfather on a few great hunts. The Westmorelands founded Mallard Manor which went on the be a premier lodge that they used for many events but especially youth and church groups. Caleb is a great duck hunter but our discussion went way beyond ducks to mentors and blessings. I think you’ll enjoy this one!

This week on Fist Full of Dirt it's Part 1 of The Fall and Rise of Chris Brackett. You may have heard part of the story of his game violation and his subsequent departure from TV and the public eye but there's more to it. Chris is an open book and goes into detail on how all that transpired and ended up saving his soul. He has always been a top notch archer and slayer of big bucks but these days he's added his faith and testimony to his message. We will also pick his "big buck" brain on part 2. Very excited for you all to hear this journey.

This week on Fist Full of Dirt we’ll recap our trip to NC. It was a humbling experience that opened my eyes wider to the human spirit, people and the good in their hearts. Our small truck load of supplies from Mossy Oak was no big deal in the big picture but lifting a few spirits was. Sometimes it’s more about the message than the money.
Give us a call and leave us a spooky story to be featured on the upcoming Halloween episode! Anything that’s happened to you or someone you know or a story you heard about. It’s all in fun. We love hearing from you guys!

The company was founded by brothers John and Jerry after John almost fell while hunting in 2000. We sit down with them in the camo cave this week to hear how it all started & boy, is it inspiring.

Will Primos talks about his upcoming induction into the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame and his new book “Straight Shooting For Hunters”. This is one of my favorite episodes, no lack of opinions in turkey hunting! Thanks for your calls and thank you for listening!

This is a very special episode of Fist Full of Dirt and we don’t say that lightly! Chris Kirby of Quaker Boy calls grew up in a great family and it just so happens his Dad was Dick Kirby, the founder of Quaker Boy. From folding labels and packing boxes as a kid to being thrust into running the company at an early age, Chris had to grow up fast and in doing so made his own world class path in the competitive calling world. Got to spend a day with Trent Ellis last week. If you’re not following him he’s a local MS boy that is quickly becoming social media famous with his 60 second posts that are absolutely hilarious. I sat him down for a Fist Full of Dirt podcast and learned that he’s the real deal when it comes to hunting. Funny as he is, he’s no joke in the woods. He’s a family man, turkey thug and a great deer hunter who spends most of his days on public land. One of my first questions was about all his content being family friendly, his answer was priceless. You don’t want to miss this episode. Thank you for listening!

If killing a turkey at any cost is your only mission then you may want to skip this one. Rule #1 is read The Tenth Legion by Col. Tom Kelly but you probably already knew that! We're starting 2024 off right on Fist Full of Dirt. Two of my best and oldest buddies get interviewed by Cranky and brother Matt. Bubba Bruce and Greg Briggs were up for a bow hunt and the boys were wearing them out with questions about hunting, me and back in the day. My bride said “hey that’s a podcast” so here we go. I’ll hear it when y’all do. No clue what was said but someone will get thrown under the bus on this one. #huntingstories

It’s a compelling testament that you should hear.

You probaly recognize the name Colonel Tom Kelly if you follow Mossy Oak and are aware of how we feel about him. This week on A Fist Full of Dirt we’re going to share what may be the most incredible story I’ve ever heard about Tom Kelly. At age 96, he killed a longbeard with his daughter sitting next to him. This hunt was put together by a team of big hearted people led and assembled by Daniel Haas. @dfoxhaas It was months in the planning and every tiny detail had to fall in place perfectly to make it happen. Daniel relives the planning, execution and Divine intervention that took place that is nothing short of incredible. Lauran and I both had tears in our eyes listening to this. The up’s and downs, the close calls and emotions involved. This one is beyond special.
"The last one that ever does come to me will call forth the same emotion that the second one did. I will sit there waiting, gun up and heart thundering, and say to myself what I have said on every single occasion since the second one. "I'm glad I lived to see it one more time." Tom Kelly

This week on A Fist Full of Dirt podcast, we’ve got a full recap of our trip to @heartoftexasbowhunting. A first for youngest grandson Ben aka “Cranky” but a trip down memory lane for me. Reconnecting with Kevin Burleson, the Herdburger, Ft. McKavett and the Ford ranch was probably way more fun for me than the boys but they seemed to love it. Great hunt, great food and great people. I’ll do my best to take y’all along.

This may be my favorite episode ever. It was DIVINE intervention that brought all the players to the field and the results are priceless! Thanks for listening!
This week on @ffodpodcast one of the true characters of turkey hunting sits down for a conversation. Dean “Redbeard” Mundhenke was featured in the short film, “The Disease”, which you can view on the Mossy Oak “GO” app. He’s a call maker, an old school turkey hunter and a world class story teller. We threw lots of questions at him and he threw some knowledge back at us along with a few laughs. This episode is solid gold.
The days are heating up and so are the turkeys (and my radiator) … tune in this week as we check in with Jesse Fish #ROOTFORJESSE and recap our epic trip to Florida.

This week on A Fist Full of Dirt podcast, we’re telling Turkey Tales and checking on our buddy Jesse Fish. I met Jesse and his family at a church sponsored fund raiser in north Florida last year and again at the NWTF convention in February. He’s been trying to kill a turkey for nearly a decade (mostly on public land) and has had many close call stories. He has hunted with plenty of good turkey hunters but something always goes wrong!

This week on Fist Full of Dirt we’re sticking with turkey tactics with one of the old school legends. Mark Prudhomme has decades of hunting, guiding and calling experience including 5 consecutive Champion of Champions titles which requires 5 turkey sounds on 5 separate devices. To say he’s talented is an understatement. He will share his thoughts on all things turkey hunting, early season, late season, field turkeys, calling to the roost etc. He’s a wealth of knowledge!
