If you’ve ever been described as having a “salty” personality, they probably didn’t mean it how Jesus means it. Today we’re looking at the biblical theme of “salt” (surprising OT uses!) and what Jesus means when he tells his disciples they are to be salt and light to the world. This sermon is a part of our series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5.
“Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is near!” These are the words Jesus uses to launch his teaching ministry. The Kingdom of Heaven has been described as the central thesis of Jesus’ teaching, and the Sermon on the Mount as his magnum opus. But what is the Kingdom of God all about? As we prepare for our upcoming series exploring the Sermon on the Mount, I wanted to spend a couple of weeks first exploring the biblical theme of the Kingdom of God. This theme shows up not only in the Sermon on the Mount but flavors all of Jesus’ teachings. If we want to understand who we are and how to live like Jesus, we must understand the Kingdom of God in the way Jesus understood it.
A sermon from Tim McMann on Jesus’ parable of the seeds and how it displays the nature of the Gospel.
Sermon for Sunday, April 7, 2024 10:00 am
I once lived with friends on the beaches of Mexico. We owned a small cafe. We roasted coffee in the morning and surfed in the afternoon. We played on the beaches together and enjoyed a great time of community. As easily enjoyable as that kind of community sounds, however, it still took a lot of work, and it wasn’t always easy. Getting community right can make all the difference. Have you ever had a great job, or been a part of a church with great teaching, but the community was awful? It can make all the difference right? Or maybe you’ve had a lousy job, but the people were awesome? Again, it can make all the difference.
In this sermon, we’ll look at a few principles of biblical community or “fellowship” to help us engage the people in our lives and find fellowship opportunities where we might not have previously expected. We will look at the foundation of fellowship and how to build on that foundation with one another.
Our sermon text comes from 1 John 1:1-2:2. We’ll also look at Psalm 133 and John 3.
For more information or a little deeper dive into the concept of fellowship see the following passages taken from the New Testament: Ephesians 2-4, Acts 2:42, 4:32; Heb 10:23
Oh, and the local chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association visited us the day I preached this sermon. Hopefully, this sheds light on any reference to them “biker gangs” in the sermon. They were a lot of fun to have.
How does the Bible counsel us to live well under government authority if we lack confidence in that government, or feel that they’re abusive of their authority? Fortunately for us, this is not a new issue for Christians. We will look at Jesus’ advice to “give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give […]
Unless we understand Christ as our “Cornerstone” we will always choose the wrong hill to die on, and these days there are plenty of hills to choose from. Thank you for joining us for this sermon as we look at Jesus’ Parable of the Tenants from Luke 20 and the significance this teaching has on […]
Learning to trust in God’s judgment has a profound effect on how we respond when we are hurt by others. The recent discovery of the unmarked graves of children in the residential schools has surfaced new, painful emotions for us as a nation, and especially for those victims of the residential schools. Locally, we are […]
We’re looking at how to respond to God’s grace with a religion of gratitude. This looks a lot different than what we’ve come to expect of religion in North America, and it may just be the key to reclaiming the “religion that our Father accepts as pure and faultless.” (see James 1:27).
Everybody deals with forgiveness, and the majority of us have people in our lives that are really difficult to forgive. Most of us are aware that the Bible calls us to forgiveness, but can we actually forgive? This teaching of Jesus’ from Luke 17 begins to reveal how we as Christians can move forward into […]
Many of us wonder, or even worry about Hell. We may believe we’re on our way there, or afraid for loved ones who have pre-deceased us. This morning, we’re looking at Jesus’ parable entitled “The Rich Man and Lazarus” and what it has to teach us about heaven and hell, and the kind of people […]
What’s the deal with the Old Testament Law? Jesus seems to want us to follow it, but it seems to get a pretty bad rap in other parts of the New Testament… What are we left with? These are the questions we’ll be looking into this morning for our sermon on Luke 16:14-18
Luke 16:1-15 What does it mean to spend your money well? How can we keep ourselves from being ruined by our money and possessions? These are questions Jesus addresses in the Parable of the Shrewd Manager. Tune into today’s sermon, to hear what the Bible says about being a “shrewd manager” of our worldly resources.
Welcome to the sermon podcast. We had the opportunity to join with the New Hope church this weekend, and get to hear from their pastor, Dave Ryan this weekend. Be sure to tune into this humble servant of the lord, as he opens up the word for us.
Jesus was known as the friend of sinners. Today we’ll look at two parables that reveal God’s heart for the lost. These are beautiful and also challenging passages. After all, being a sinner is easy, but being a “friend of sinners” is messy and not usually easy.
Jesus is willing to give you a radically transformed life, but are you ready and able to follow him? This week, we’ll examine the cost of discipleship as Jesus lays it out in Luke 14:25. If you’re enjoying this content and would like to join us live, we are meeting Sundays at 11:00am in the […]
As we’ve been exploring Jesus’ teachings on the Kingdom of God, we’ve been learning a lot about what he’s been calling us into. Today, we’re going to take a look at what the invitation to the Kingdom will call us away from and the promise it holds for us.
Without the resurrection, Christianity simply would not exist. All of Jesus’ life, the miracles he performed, and the claims he made about himself would be pure nonsense without the resurrection. History would have long ago forgotten about the zealot who claimed to be the Son of God, but lacked the capacity to save himself from […]
Welcome! Thanks so much for taking the time to tune into this week’s sermon online. This Sunday is Palm Sunday, and we will look at what it means to worship a king who rides in on a donkey.
How do we view others in the “kingdom of God” and how will we be viewed? Jesus speaks to these powerfully in this passage from Luke 14, as he turns an otherwise normal dinner party upside down with his perspective on the Kingdom of God.
Welcome! Thanks so much for taking the time to tune into this week’s sermon online.* This week we’re looking at the nature of Jesus’ quiet confidence in God, and how we too can face our worries or struggles with a quiet confidence in God. The verse for today is from Luke 13:31-35. Other references include:Psalm […]
In this sermon from Luke 13:22, Jesus address the question from the crowd of “Who can be saved?” Will there be lots or just a few? Of course, the real question, and the one Jesus addresses, is not just who can be saved, but how can I be saved? Join us today for a look […]
The Kingdom of God is a huge biblical theme with tremendous implications for us today. We don’t often appreciate how important this theme is for understanding who Jesus claimed to be and what he claimed to be about. Today we’ll explore this theme through two short parables Jesus taught with, and look at what it […]
As Christians, what should our relationship with the world around us look like? There is increasing cultural pressure for Christians to abandon some of their core beliefs and values. How do we face this pressure and respond in a biblical, honest way? This is a major question for many of us and has shaped a […]
Is repentance really necessary and if so, how do we do it? Today, we’re addressing these two questions from Luke 13 and will offer a helpful guide to a prayer of repentance you can incorporate on your own today.
We often talk about the apocalypse pretty negatively. However, as Christians we see that the return of our Lord is actually great news. Jesus wants us to be ready for the joyful culmination of human history. But what about the meantime? How are we to prepare for Jesus’ return? This sermon is all about Jesus’ […]
The world has a lot to worry about:vaccines, masks, social distancing, bubbles, church gatherings, even symptoms of the common cold are more worrisome than they’ve ever been (we were even pretty worried about toilet paper for a while there!). With all there is to worry about in the world we can’t afford to leave the […]
This week, we’re on part two of our series on the Apocalypse, this time offering perspective on prosperity from the Parable of the Rich Fool. We will examine Jesus’ warning to avoid all kinds of greed and what is meant by being “rich toward God”. This sermon is from Luke 12:13-21.
“No Time For Hypocrisy” from Luke 12:1-12. The apocalypse seems especially relevant today, especially in light of our relatively recent global concerns around the pandemic and the political unrest in the states. We’re diving back into our series on Luke to do a short series on the Apocalypse from Luke chapter 12 and how Christ […]
How do we still rejoice when facing grief and suffering? We rejoice in the living hope that we have secured for us.
If you pondered for a moment on what your greatest need is, would it be a list of things going on in your life? Like financial help or guidance in your marriage? Maybe even physical healing? or would it be the forgiveness of sin? In this passage we look at today Christ shows us that […]
One of the most radical characteristics of Jesus is his humility. The Son of God, knowing who he was, where he came from and where he was going, had been given all things by the father and by these things he came and served. Join us as Jesus sets an example for us to follow […]
