We had the pleasure of meeting with Karin from Parkdale Food Center, where she outlined her role, and what her food bank does. She emphasized the importance of her organization's work in her neighbourhood of Hintonburg, and the significance of using food as a connecting tool. This organization aims to bring dignity to people and build relationships from neighbour to neighbour as they feed their neighbourhood and ensure food security. The biggest lessons learned were those of the importance of food choice, neighbour connections, EVERYONE no matter the age can help and make a difference, AND dignity for all; as well as the need to find bigger solutions to our food needs in the future. Food banks lay a great foundation, but they are only the first stepping stone in fixing a bigger food problem.
In this episode of the Social Changemakers, Our class got together with Tanya from Water First Education and Training Inc. Tanya explained the impact and goals of Water First, as well as gave everyday solutions and helpful hints to our students on how they could help. Her organization focuses on bringing clean water solutions to Northern and Indigenous communities through training, workshops, and volunteering experiences. They focus on partnerships within their community, encouraging youth to find a voice and action for the problems, and spreading awareness on clean water issues they encounter. The students learned a LOT about water issues within their own province and had a lot of questions throughout that helped build their overall understanding that not everyone in Canada has clean water access... But that they all deserve it!

During their discussion, they touched on communicating scientific illustration through writing and podcasting, interviewing scientific illustrators and discussing why that's important to communicate, what were some of the key things that Zenya took away from her passion project, and what she learned and what skills she gained throughout her passion project.
This week, Tessa had the chance to sit down and talk to sports coach and mentor, John Haime. He has his own business who believes everyone can succeed in what they do. He is there to help athletes get to the next level of their sports whether that is the olympics, college level or university. He talks about how it is not only skill but a big part of it is mentality for the sport. He is there to make them better and to believe in you to follow your dreams. It was an amazing talk, especially because Tessa is interested in going into the same field as he is in. She continued to learn about the schooling involvement and the different paths I could go through to get there!

My name is Tessa Shimizu and this is my second time doing a podcast throughout this course (Leadership and Healthy Active Living). During this podcast, I had a chance to talk with Anna who is very knowledgeable in many fields surrounding health, nutrition and fitness. At the beginning of this conversation Anna talks about who she is and what roles she plays in the healthy living industry. What is unique about this podcast is that Anna, Abbey and I focused mainly on the struggles in social media and being a woman trying to start a healthy life. Anna explains to me that the social media posts are very misleading, but at the same time we cannot blame them as that is how they make money. This subject interested me a lot and I am glad I learned more about it!

My name is Francesco and in this episode I interview Nick J Kyte, a real estate agent in the Ottawa region. Being knowledgeable on a topic as big as buying a home has been something I have been very passionate about. Growing up I’ve seen my dad build many homes and sell them to make profit. I have always been interested in all the things that come along with it. I feel as though others need to be more educated on this topic more as it is one of the things coming out of school that no one truly understands the concept of. This is why I interviewed Nick to not only give myself the knowledge but to share with others as well.
A few questions that were asked were, as a first time home buyer what would be the best way to buy a house? Would it be better to go in with friends and split the costs? Renovate? Sell for higher? With the market being at the price being very expensive, what is it like for a first time home buyer right now? What types of things would you have liked to know if you were your younger self buying a home for the first again?

My name is Tessa Shimizu and this is my second course with R.I.S.E academy. In my leadership course I have focused on the healthy living aspect. During this podcast, I got a chance to have a discussion with personal trainer and nutritionist Saleh. Throughout the conversation, Saleh talks about his journey in becoming a trainer, his struggles and achievements. He continues by explaining how everyone is different and every individual needs different amounts of physical activity depending on many factors. Saleh adapts to every client he has and pushes them to do their best! By the end, he explains the importance of resting your body to not overwork it. It was an amazing experience!
Zenya is learning about the importance of combining science and art to make scientific art and illustrations. In this episode, RISER Mohammad Almafaalani and RISE facilitator Adam Farhat navigate a powerful conversation about the Civil War in Syria. This conversation is in effort to teach other Canadians about what has taken place and what is still happening. This semester, Mohammad will be creating a series through interviewing other Syrian people to listen and learn about each other's experiences. Mohammad will also be running 10kms in effort to raise money for individuals in Syria.

The Hockey Guys Tik Tok was started as just something fun to do with a bunch of buddies - give it a follow, it is entertaining, cute and very PG. What this group of 10 guys didn't realize would happen, was that they would become Tik Tok sensations. Once they got noticed they realized that they had a platform to make a difference. Now their videos are being used by a children's hospital in California to motivate young patients to complete their rehab. They are constantly getting messages about how they have made people's days. In this first episode hosts Owen and Gracie interview one of Owen's long time friends Gabe Ferron-Bouis. As a baby, Gabe was diagnosed with fibular hemimelia, the shortening or absence of a fibula at birth. It is a rare condition that didn’t allow his foot and ankle to form properly.
At nine months old, Gabe had his foot removed, his heel pad attached to his tibia and was fitted for a prosthetic leg. It didn’t slow him down. He was water skiing by the age of two.

Owen has started this quadmester on a mission. He is ready to share his new schooling experience with others. He is hosting an e-sports event called RAISE for R.I.S.E. to raise money for scholarships to R.I.S.E. Academy. As a part of this project he wants to have conversations about education and the need for reform. In this episode, Aurora makes her podcasting debut. Aurora is sad to know that children around the world do not have the same opportunities that she does and that many of them are forced into child labour. In this episode she interviews Mira Gillis who is an amazing young advocate for this issue. Mira is originally from Windsor, ON and is currently in her first year at Carleton University. Mira Gillis served as a national youth advocate for World Vision Canada, campaigning for the federal government to enact legislation which would force companies to disclose if children were exploited to make their products.
