In the last of the current episodes, I speak with Elizabeth Joy, the creator of the Other Than Motherhood podcast. Elizabeth started this as part of her process of answering the question of whether she wants children or not. We talk about that process and she picks out some key concepts she has found useful from her podcast interviews. These include different ways of relating to regret as well as how this topic can impact friendships and how it can be difficult to communicate about for many reasons.
I highly recommend Elizabeth's podcast - https://open.spotify.com/show/0ClXSiXAk7siifA3KCEa9l?si=98a15a64573a44e3
She has a a wide range of guests including experts and people she knows from her own life which highlights different perspectives.
I hope to be back with some new episodes next year, thanks to everyone for listening.

My guest today is Jennifer Flint, a woman's empowerment coach and author of the novel 'Wild Egg'. This book tells the story of Holly and her struggle to break the deadlock of ambivalence to decide whether becoming a mother is her wholehearted choice, or simply what she has been programmed to believe. We discuss the book, the process of writing it and what it has been like since its release two years ago. The book also focuses on what happens after Holly makes her decision. We discuss transitions and endings in life, including the grief that can be present even when we make a positive choice. We talk about the importance of allowing ourselves this liminal phase as we adapt to our choice, experimenting with what life might look like. Welcome to a new series of episodes to celebrate International Childfree Day 2024! I am delighted to start off by speaking with Nicole Louie about her book 'Others Like Me: The Stories of Women Without Children'.
Nicole is originally from Brazil but is now based in Ireland. This book is a deeply personal exploration of childless and childfree women's lives, including Nicole's own story. The book shows the many ways in which people find fulfillment outside of parenthood and creates a sense of community regardless of age, geographical location or reasons for not having children.
Nicole both writes and speaks beautifully about this topic. We explore themes from the book including the impact of relationships with other people, how our voices can get lost through other peoples questions and doubt, and how clarity, once you find it and whatever that means to you, will cascade down and throughout all areas of your life.
Nicole's book is available to buy in Europe now and will be available in North America in November. For full book purchasing details, please click here - https://www.dialoguebooks.co.uk/titles/nicole-louie/others-like-me/9781408748336/
You can follow Nicole on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/bynicolelouie/?hl=en where she curates content around books, movies and podcasts about women who are not mothers by choice, infertility, circumstance or ambivalence.
I really hope you enjoy this episode and that you have a great International Childfree Day!

This is part 5 (and the last!) of the mini-series of 'Who will look after me when I get old' and we are discussing death. My guest is Liam McCarthy, a death doula (also known as an end of life doula). Liam is based in Youghal, Co. Cork and is a civil celebrant for weddings, baby naming ceremonies and funerals.
We discuss what a death doula does, how our relationship with death has changed and why we need to be able to talk about death and grief more openly, for both practical and emotional reasons. We also discus funeral options, budgeting and the benefits of planning ahead for our own deaths and funerals.
This was a really informative and also very enjoyable conversation, with quite a few laughs along the way, despite the topic.

This is a brief chat with Simon Forsyth, who I will be co-facilitating the upcoming 'Taking the Road Less Travelled - Embracing Your Childfree Life' Workshop with.

We discuss what therapeutic/reflective writing is generally and how we will use it to help people reflect upon and deepen their understanding of being childfree. The emphasis is on the content and process in whatever form that works for the participant. It is not about neat handwriting or correct sentence structure. No one will be correcting your work with a red pen and no one has to share anything they have written unless they want to. However, being able to share and hear content with like minded people can be very powerful and enjoyable in itself.

Our workshop takes place on June 26th, 10am to 4pm via Zoom. Tickets are 90e and are on sale now through this link - https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/taking-the-road-less-travelled-embracing-your-childfree-life-tickets-154438492689

We are very excited to hold this unique event specifically designed for childfree people.

The workshop is open to participants both inside and outside of Ireland, but please note that due to insurance limitations we are unfortunately unable to include applicants based in the USA.

In this episode, I have a really insightful and honest conversation with Julie Cobbe about her process of choosing not to have children of her own, as her husband had children from a previous relationship and also had a vasectomy before they met. My guest today is Selina Bonnie. Selina is an Indian/Irish disabled woman. She is an activist, lecturer and trainer in the international disabled people's movement  for over 25 years. Her research focuses on sexuality, sexual expression and reproductive rights for disabled people. She is also a busy wife and mother.
As previously discussed, there is a strong societal attitude that everyone will, should and wants to have children. It can be so pervasive it is almost difficult to see.  However, we see that this applies very differently to disabled people, which shows how much of a social construct it is. We talk about the barriers which face disabled people who want to be parents and how important autonomy and choice are for everyone in this very personal decision.

In this episode, I speak to Cork couple, Kym and Rick Kenny. We talk about how, initially, they had different opinions on whether to have children or not. Kym knew from a young age that she didn't want to, while Rick assumed he would have kids in the future. He describes how he came to see this as an automatic assumption and how he didn't know if it was actually something he wanted or not. They share the process they went through, both individually and as a couple to examine these positions and make the decision that kids are not for them. In this episode, I speak with Joanne Ryan. Joanne is an actor and playwright, who wrote and performed a play called 'Eggistentialism', which was all about her process of trying to decide if she wanted to have a child or not. We discuss the experience of feeling overloaded with conflicting information and how she needed to stop searching for the 100% correct answer to this question. Joanne does now have a child and we discussed what this has been like too. Joanne is very open, honest and funny. You can follow Joanne's work at http://joanneryan.ie/

In this episode, I have a great conversation with Bronagh Fleming about her choice to be childfree. Bronagh is really interesting person, with a wide range of passions and interests. You can follow her at https://www.instagram.com/foxhollowstyle/ to see her wonderful interior styling ideas. Bronagh is approaching glorious middle age with the hope that people will stop asking her when she and her partner are going to have children! She highlights the importance of finding like minded people to feel connected to and supported by.
