On today's episode of the Prepped and Polished Podcast, Alexis Avila talks to Alexis Avila talks to Todd Weaver, MBA, College Financial Aid Advisor, and Vice President of Strategies for College. Todd specializes in integrating the college selection process within cost management parameters for the families he works with.

Todd gives us his best FAFSA tips to get the most financial aid.

Tip 1: Know your deadlines. Every college has different deadlines. Research the Financial aid web page for each specific school to get specific deadlines.

Tip 2: Colleges are asking for two years worth of tax returns, so make sure you get your tax returns together dating back to January 1 of sophomore year.

Tip 3: Make sure you read the directions carefully and know whose questions you’re answering; student qs vs. parents qs.

Tip 4: Tip for after you fill out the FAFSA, Make sure you check the summary page after you fill out the FAFSA and check to see how long it takes average graduate to graduate from a school you’re looking into. If it takes six years on average to graduate from a school, then that will cost you a lot more money than a four-year school, so reconsider your options if on a budget.

Episode 208:

The Prepped and Polished Podcast is an educational and inspirational show that offers tutoring and test prep tips as well as interviews with celebrities and leaders in education. It is hosted by Alexis Avila, founder of Prepped and Polished LLC, a tutoring and test prep firm for K-college.

On today's episode of the Prepped and Polished Podcast, Alexis Avila talks to Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, Ph.D., MEd, an expert in the field of Educational Neuroscience. He has conducted research and lectured at Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, the University of Melbourne, and over 100 schools across four continents. He is the author of the book "Stop Talking, Start Influencing: 12 Insights from Brain Science to Make Your Message Stick."

Today, Jared gives us his top five strategies teens and adults can use to learn faster.

Tip 1: Get your mind right. Make sure you tell yourself you CAN learn this and jump start your mind.

Tip 2: Match context to the outcome. If you have a test next Friday in a Red room, then study in that red room, wear the same cologne, etc. Routines become highly contextual.

Tip 3: Don’t multitask. No one can multitask. Memory and accuracy tanks when you perform more than one task at a time. So if you’re studying, put the phone away, and study. Music is ok to study too as long as it’s just background noise.

Tip 4: Less is more. You’ll do better with less but focused study over the course of two weeks, vs. study and multitask for four hours straight. Try 25 minutes of focused study then break for 5 minutes and text friends or grab a snack, then come back for 25 minutes. If after 25 minutes you reach a Flow state and want to keep studying, by all means, go past the 25 minute mark.

Tip 5: Recall is everything. The key to a deep memory is you have to pull info out of your brain. So talk a lot about what you learned. Teach someone else some of that info. Bonus tip: You create the narrative or find the story behind the info you want to remember.

Jared’s tips for teens:

  1. Life is longer than you think. Make decisions in advance but ok to change your mind later. Remain open.
  2. Recognize you are in charge of this. The Brain and body are passive and responds to you. Take control.

The Prepped and Polished Podcast is an educational and inspirational show that offers tutoring and test prep tips as well as interviews with celebrities and leaders in education. It is hosted by Alexis Avila, founder of Prepped and Polished LLC, a tutoring and test prep firm for K-college.

On today's episode of the Prepped and Polished Podcast,

Alexis Avila talks with to Jon Pearson. Jon Pearson is an artist, writer, speaker, educator, and creativity guru. He has written over three hundred short stories and has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes. He writes now for the same reason he played with his food as a kid – to make the world a better place. Jon also was a cartoonist for the Oakland Tribune, an extra for the New York Metropolitan Opera, a classroom teacher, a college professor, and is now a coach and consultant who has taught creative thinking and learning techniques to more than one million people around the world. Secretly, though, Jon is still eight years old and believes that courage, caring, and creativity will save the world!

Jon gives us tips on how to get out of your own head and make your creative writing pieces more creative and meaningful.

What is creative writing about? Creative writing is more about imagination than writing. Writing isn’t just saying something but seeing stuff. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself, don’t care what other think of you, and be brave, go deeper. If you just write you will get better.

Can you make a living out of it? You can make a living out of being a creative person. You can write, speak, do art and sell things based upon your imagination.

Misconception about writing? You don’t have to be a writer with a capital “W” to be a writer. Just write.

How can parents help? Parents should read to their kids! Jon’s parents used to read to Jon a lot. Don’t put a lot of pressure on your kids and encourage kids to use their imagination. It’s ok to write poorly at first, the key is to practice writing consistently.

How to overcome writer’s block? There is no such thing as writer’s block. If you feel like there is such a thing, remember it will pass, get comfortable in it and write some garbage and don’t care if it’s bad, the writing will get better eventually.

Don’t try to write perfectly to overcome writer’s block. Write to find out who you really are in great detail.

Jon’s tips for teens:

  1. Believe in yourself no matter what!

  2. if you want to land on your feet, have fun and be of service

  3. Pleasure, mastery, values. Make a list under each category. And then write about these things on your list!

  4. Have fun, writing should be fun, it’s not easy but make it fun.

On today's show, Alexis talks with Marisa Meddin. Marisa, is the founder of Talk College To Me an online community that helps students and parents navigate the college admissions process in a way that is FUN and EASY.

Marisa gives us some ideas on what you should be doing each high school year leading up to college.

Download Marisa’s College Preparation Timeline: www.talkcollegetome.com/preppedandpolished

Marisa Meddin’s College Prep Timeline:

9th grade is time to explore. Priority one is get good grades and sign up for many clubs and figure out which ones you like best.

10th grade is the year to narrow down your activities and clubs in and out of school.

Consider taking the PSAT 10th grade b/c it’s good practice and get you comfortable with standardized tests. And start looking at colleges casually. End of year consider taking

SAT Subject tests or AP exams.

11th grade there is a lot to do. Take rigorous courses to challenge yourself and keep up your grades. Take on leadership opportunities. And take your standardized tests, PSAT in October and either ACT or SAT or both.

Beginning of 12th grade is crunch time! Sign up for rigorous classes still because colleges do look. Colleges do request a mid-year report and can rescind your acceptance!

Start focusing on college essay a few weeks before school starts to reduce stress! Do test retakes if needed.

Marisa’s advice to teens: Shoot for the stars and push yourself but don’t worry if you don’t get into the best college, just succeed in the college you get into.

On today's show, Alexis talks with Chris Buck, a mental conditioning coach, author, and president and founder of Christian Buck Consulting and the creator of The Sport of School Academy. Chris shares ten things students can do to dramatically improve their performance in school.

Chris Buck’s ten tips:

  1. Sit in the front row

  2. Write down test dates as soon as you know them in your weekly/online planner. If you have a test on Monday, start reviewing on Thursday so you can ask questions on Friday at school!

  3. Get a 100% on the first quiz/test/homework assignment for each class.

  4. Make certain that you earn 100% on all “extras” (i.e., Homework, Attendance, Class Participation, etc.).

  5. Complete ALL homework assignments (without looking up the answers).

  6. Take advantage of all extra credit opportunities, even if you got a 100%. You may need those points later.

  7. Challenge a classmate to a contest of who can receive better grades in that class.

  8. Get to know your teacher.

  9. Study PRIOR to the night before the test.

  10. For labs, find the best partner, not necessarily your best friend.

Chris’s key study tip:

If you have a test or quiz on Monday, start reviewing on Thursday so you can ask questions on Friday at school!

How parents can help: Parents can help inspire kids by taking them on college tours to show them where they can end up going if they work hard.

Chris Buck’s tips for teens: 1. Learn work ethic and practice working hard hard! 2. Develop a love of learning. 3. Develop an ability to problem solving, because people hire those who can solve problems

On today's show, Alexis talks Yulia Rafailova who is founder of Mind Full Education, a company that helps parents and their kids tackle a variety of issues that stem from executive functioning deficits such as:

Lack of engagement and motivation in academics/school. Disorganization, losing important items. Emotional overwhelm and anxiety. Poor time management, planning, and prioritizing tasks. Lack of study routine and skills. Communication, asking for help, and self-advocacy.

Yulia says that it’s better to use the word TAKE ACTION (vs. motivation). The word motivated puts a lot of pressure on you. But taking action will lead you to take more action and feel more motivated!

Yulia’s Tips to take action to get better motivated in school: Exercise: Write down three columns on paper of goals that you need to get done and what you want to get done. In another column write down all the negative consequences if not reaching those goals In another column write all the benefits if goals are reached. Do this process daily, it will help you take more action.

Yulia’s advice for teens: Ask yourself what do you love to do, what are you passionate about, and what problem do you want to solve in the world.

Seth was a teacher for 12 years (several grades and subjects), has a B.A. in Education, an M.Ed. in Gifted Education, has worked with teens with substance issues for 15 years, and taught on a Navajo reservation. On todays episode Seth talks about tips to get disorganized students better organized in school and in life.

Seth’s tips for organization:

Declutter your bedroom and desk, simplify! The more stuff you have the more stuff you have to maintain! Downsize your environment.

Have “homes” for things that are labeled! Keep electronics in baskets for example. Create systems for organizing their school work, homework and keep it in a logical place to find easily.

Do a Sunday overhaul, so once per week re do and organize all your folders, papers, planners What is a Queue folder?

The Queue folder is for everything current across all subjects. It’s a catch all for everything current. Ex) put paper that is due in a week in Queue, put science test review sheet in queue.

Seth’s final tips for teens: Do not give up! #1 biggest problem will have is your own resistance. The key to overcoming resistance is to take baby steps and move inch by inch. The key to happy future is to do things you won’t like, like getting organized and writing papers. Push self beyond comfort zone consistently.

Tips for bullying: Go seek help. But remember, when kids constantly go to adults for help, they will feel DISEMPOWERED. So empower them and let the bullied kid take some ownership of the situation. Also, you should work on your self-esteem, so you can let certain things roll of your back easier. Remember the bully is weak!

Joanie’s tips for teens getting ready for young adulthood: Wean your parents a little. “Hey Mom, I’d like to try this on my own and come to you if I need help.”

Marc’s study tip no no’s: Don’t cram and don’t lie in bed while studying.

Marc’s best ways to get an “A”: 1. Be in tune with your teacher (go office hours and seek extra credit) 2. Form a study group with other smart students who you can learn from 3. Do the best you can

Marc’s advice for teens: You are who your friends are. If you are hanging out/associating with people who are not nice then you need to move away from that. And set a goal and ask yourself what you are going to do for the next ten years to achieve your goal.

Delvina shares ways teens can develop the mental tools to overcome any life challenge that comes their way. She also teaches us how to follow the 50-40-10 rule. Listen in!

Fact: Delvina herself struggled with self-esteem issues and learned to conquer her struggles and now empowers others to do the same.

What parents can do to help their teens? Support them but don’t rescue them.

Advice for teens who put a mask on in school? Be kind to yourself, replace negative thoughts with positive ones, and don’t be afraid of failure.

Delvina’s words of wisdom for teens:

  1. Believe in yourself and your abilities
  2. Believe that your mind and you have control over your behavior and you can set that in a positive direction (leads to resilience)

On today's show, Alexis is joined by international speaker, and teen mentor David McQueen. David is the founder of Magnificent Generation, a company delivering speeches and workshops to students and teachers. For over 25 years, David has spoken to teens on five continents. His humor, story telling and ability to connect with audiences across the board have made him the choice speaker for schools, conferences, and corporate events.

David talks about some of the people in his life that motivated him to pursue his passions and teaches us the key ingredients to be more confident and successful in and out of school.

Parent tip: Instill education in the household, and LISTEN to your teen in a NON-JUDGEMENTAL way, and be humorous with your teen! Teens respond well to humor. David’s key tip for teens: Learn to express yourself in a healthy way by having an adult around you who is willing to listen non judgmentally and gives you the forum to express yourself. If that happens this gives growing confidence and experience that allows you to better communicate with adults later in life.

David’s final KEY tip: Always know who your friends are and don’t worry about people who don’t matter to you. Treat people like you want to be treated, and treat others like they want to be treated. And DON’T BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES! Have a blast as a teen, be present, be in the moment, and surround yourself with good friends and family!

On today's show, Alexis is joined by Elizabeth Dankoski. For the past 15 years, Elizabeth has worked as a private college consultant, helping students get into incredible schools: Harvard, MIT, Columbia, Yale, Caltech, Dartmouth, and many, many others.

On today’s podcast, Elizabeth gives her take on college admissions mania and based on her experience, what it REALLY takes to get into elite colleges.

Takeaways: Get the book “How to be a High School Superstar” by Cal Newport. If you want to get into top schools, you need to be INTERESTING

Elizabeth’s next enrollment into her mastermind group is early 2016. Spaces fill up quickly! Her mastermind helps kids find mentors and find opportunities to find interests and flourish.

Two college admissions myths:

  1. Your grades don’t have to be perfect. If you spend too much time on perfection you don’t have time to distinguish yourself.

  2. Just because an elite college is a top 20 in the US News Rankings, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the right FIT school for you.

Elizabeth’s Three Take home tips:

  1. Ask yourself what do you love to do and how can I make an impact
  2. Find a mentor (seek an older person who can help you think BIGGER)
  3. Go out there and DO what interests you
