Often it's a better idea to ask yourself what the "worst" way to do something is. It's frequently easier to identify that. Avoiding pitfalls is often enough to make it to the finish line.

Real talk: I was disappointed in myself. In 2023, I realized that students at the Calgary Language Nerds progressed slowly.
I also noticed that most people didn't take many lessons. I think the average used to be something like 16 hours of class per person...in the course of a year.
Considering that the vast majority of learners at the time didn't do much self-study or homework (if any), 16 hours is quite simply not enough.
For the first time since then, I'm proud of the work we're doing. Far more students really are getting better. We can measure their progress. The best part is that it looks like we really are on the pathway to being able to guarantee fluency for those who take lessons.
Can't wait to keep building!

As I've spoken with private tutors over the years, I've noticed that they frequently feel frustrated with students who aren't committed to their studies. I was teaching one of my upper-intermediate level Spanish students today and she told me an interesting travel anecdote. Let's call this student Anna.
A few years ago, Anna was in a taxi while traveling around Colombia. The taxi driver was initially quite aloof and rude with her. However, as soon as Anna spoke to the driver in Spanish, his entire demeanour changed. He treated my student and her husband with more warmth and even gave them a city tour.
Being a traveller myself, Anna's story did not surprise me. In my experience, there are four benefits to knowing the local language (even just the basics) when travelling:

Locals treat you with more warmth, kindness, enthusiasm, and patience
-
You are less susceptible to getting tricked by scams
-
You have the chance to participate in experiences that are off the beaten path
-
The travel experience is less overwhelming overall

I wanted to make this podcast today because summer is right around the corner and I’ve seen too many people over the years make the mistake of pausing their language studies during this time. In general, I advise against this because:
- Consistency and fluency go hand-in-hand and,
- While you may have the best of intentions now, it is very common for people to give up on trying to learn a language by the time the fall comes around due to a lack of motivation or a change in priorities.
Therefore, I don’t believe it to be a good idea to drop everything for the sake of having an “enjoyable summer.” Instead, you can do one of the following:
- If you have a busy summer, reduce the amount of time you study or, preferably, use the 5/3 method I mention in this video.
- If your schedule is not changing much this summer, maintain the same study schedule you have now.
- If you will have more time than usual this summer, schedule some intensive studies. You can cut the time to fluency in half just by getting disciplined by 2 months.

Many language learners I come across feel that speaking is one of the hardest parts of learning another language. They feel self-conscious and get frustrated at their inability to communicate with native speakers fluently, leading them to make mistakes such as:
1. Switching to their first language in the middle of a conversation. For example, I was once speaking with a friend in Gujarati and was feeling self-conscious. As a result, I started speaking with my friend in English. Her English level was higher than my Gujarati level, making it much easier to communicate in English.
2. “Running away” from a conversation. Once while in Brazil I was trying to buy a drink from a fast food restaurant. I tried to tell the cashier that I didn’t want ice in the drink, but she didn’t understand me. She gave me the drink and, unsurprisingly, it had ice in it. I felt discouraged and self-conscious about my low level of Portuguese, so instead of trying to explain myself once more, I swiftly walked out of the fast food restaurant in an attempt to avoid embarrassing myself further. In reality I probably didn’t have much to be embarrassed about despite feeling that way in the moment.
3. Avoiding conversations altogether. When I was in Beijing as a beginner Mandarin learner, I always struggled to get my point across and understand what others said. This was incredibly overwhelming and draining. Because of this, I would often sit in my room for hours at at time instead of going outside to take in the sights.
How to Have Smoother Conversations
The number one rule is to stay in the conversation as long as possible. Here are a few simple ways to do this. I elaborate further upon each one and give additional tips in this podcast episode.
• Ask lots of questions. It’s easier to ask questions than share long anecdotes yourself.
• Use online dictionaries and translators in the middle of conversations when you encounter words or phrases you don’t know.
• Use phrases like “let me think” and “let me look something up” to buy yourself more time to think about what to say next.

In today's podcast, I interviewed Logan, a German, Danish, and English instructor at the Calgary Language Nerds. We discussed a variety of topics, but by far the highlight for me was our discussion around taking university classes to learn a language.
Let me explain.
Logan used to be an aircraft mechanic, but decided to change careers. He is now in the latter half of a degree in French and Spanish with the goal of becoming a teacher. While Logan feels that his university classes have helped him to improve his level in both French and Spanish, he believes that university classes are one of the least cost effective and least effective ways to learn a new language. He finds that they’re expensive and that the teaching methods used are ineffective. As you'll see in this episode, for the most part I agree with Logan's opinion. However, I brought up the following advantages of learning in a university setting:
- I personally like the accountability of studying in a university setting. It acts as a motivator.
- I don't think that university classes are always terribly expensive. For example, my Mandarin class at the University of Calgary cost $800 for about 40 hours of class. That equates to $20/hr for a group class with 5 other people. That's a lot lower than many group class rates you'd find elsewhere in Calgary. Additionally, the class at my local university was at my level (mid to high intermediate). I don't think I could have found another group class locally at such a level.
- Learning in a university opens up additional learning opportunities. For example, when I was doing my French and Spanish degree from 2011 to 2014, I was able to go to "The Spanish Centre" for multiple hours everyday to practice Spanish with a skilled instructor, free of charge.

What a fun interview this was! Katrina follows my language learning blog (https://azren.substack.com). We were exchanging emails and I thought it would be fun to invite her onto my podcast to nerd out about language learning. The highlight of this episode for me was that both Katrina and I let wonder guide our language efforts. We constantly ask ourselves questions such as:
I wonder why native speakers say that?
I wonder how I would say...in my target language?
I wonder what that person's saying?
That curiosity fuels and guides our studies. If you've ever felt confused about what to practice or study next in another language, this is an episode to listen to. You may find that curiosity is the roadmap to fluency you've been waiting for.

I recently interviewed the Biblical Hebrew and Latin instructor at my business, the Calgary Language Nerds. In today's podcast, I interviewed another CLN instructor. Catherine is a polyglot who speaks English, Spanish, Russian, and Galician. She is also learning French. Catherine has a Masters degree in teaching foreign languages and has taught at the CLN for about 3 years.

I was thinking about how words get forgotten when learning a language, which gave me the idea for this podcast.
In this episode, I learned that there is apparently talk that discusses the connection between one's ability to save money and the language that they speak. It was a fascinating conversation.
This is so important and this concept will make sure that you make the best possible decisions along your language learning journey.

Text I Read: 杭州男子租集装箱改装成公寓
在杭州，有一个住在集装箱里的男子在网上走红了。他叫阮晨海，家住浙江台州，在杭州工作。 早晨 因为在杭州买房子太贵了，阮晨海又想把更多的钱放在工作上，所以他就在网上租了一个集装箱，每个月的租金是1200元。这个集装箱很特别，里面有一个小床，还有洗手间，看上去更像是一个小公寓。除了不能做饭，其他东西应有尽有。阮晨海说，过去他一个月在酒店住20天，要花6000元，和现在相比，节约了近5000元。
这个集装箱不但是阮晨海的“家”，也是他工作的地方。他的孩子也认为，爸爸的这个房子很“酷”

This is a clip from my Mandarin lesson a few days ago. In this lesson, I am reading a short story out loud to my teacher that I wrote in Mandarin. From there, my teacher and I send some time going through all the corrections. Below I have included the original text that I wrote and the corrected version. When I wrote this text, I was trying to incorporate as many words that I recently learned. Hope you like this podcast!

很多年以前有一个人叫大卫。他最喜欢的爱好是打雪仗和堆雪人。有一天大卫决定了堆了一个非常大的雪人，原来他过了所有的周末堆。不巧，发生了一个问题：星期一温度提高了，所以他的雪人融化了。太糟糕了！大卫不仅难过而且生气。之所以他感觉这样，是因为融化以前没有时间给妈妈爸爸看他堆的雪人。可是，不管融化了，大卫还是告诉妈妈爸爸他的故事。妈妈爸爸说：大卫，你应该确定天气呀！

This was an interesting podcast. I was at a pub with a few friends and I drove one of my buddies home. It was about a four-minute drive and I decided to do an impromptu podcast episode with my friend. I gave him the phone, we hit the record button, and we started talking about different languages. My friend is from the Philippines and we talked about what it's like to lose your first language. My friend moved to Canada when he was quite young and no longer speaks his first language. This driving podcast was a ton of fun and I think you a lot of you are going to like it.
