Liquid crystals have a multitude of applications, notably those in flat panel display technology, which has fundamentally impacted modern life. From a theoretical point of view, liquid crystals offer a unique opportunity for the study of partial order, as complex liquid crystal phases represent the most well-organised known states of soft matter.
