How can we make self-care more accessible? Who is 'That Girl' and why do we have to become her? This week I speak with Hafsa Issa-Salwe who is the host of Mind Pretty Soul, the podcast that talks about that which gives you peace of mind, keeps you looking pretty, and makes your soul sing. Hafsa shares her mental health journey with me in a candid conversation and how she is now approaching life. She also shares with me what self-care means to her and how we can shape the idea of self-care to make it work for us and our circumstances.

Finally, That Girl has been trending on TikTok so we dive deep into this trend and discuss how social media, money, and optimization has commodified self-care.

I talk to Nkechi from Sickle Fitness. Nkechi is a London-based health and fitness blogger who shares her journey with fitness while also managing a chronic illness. I know from first-hand experience that this is a fine line to walk as a gym session can sometimes lead to a hospital admission. However, as a society, our lifestyles have become increasingly sedentary, so it’s important to make sure that we’re taking care of our bodies through movement while also not pushing it beyond its limits. Today Nkechi and I talk about getting that balance right and her journey so far. When you think of masculinity, what words come to mind? Protector, provider, strength? What about Nurturer, insecure, vulnerable?  How does this definition change if you’re dealing with a chronic illness?

Does our view of masculinity change if someone has a chronic illness? What constitutes as masculinity and is it a social construct? Dunstan Nicol-Wilson talks to me about how his perception of masculinity has changed over time while dealing with Sickle Cell Anemia. He tells me the importance of communicating with family when you need help, going to therapy, and how it's time to change our perception of masculinity.

In this solo episode, I share some experiences on my ever-changing journey with my health and life, and some lessons I’ve learnt along the way. I chat all about the limiting beliefs that have come up for me in relation to my chronic illness, and how these have manifested from a place of fear. I discuss the difference between taking necessary cautionary measures and adopting beliefs that limit and undermine our power. I hope this episode helps anyone facing limiting beliefs in health and life, and serves as a reminder that with our biggest struggles comes our biggest growths.

I catch up with Petra from S.C.R.E.A.M to talk about growing up with Sickle Cell Anemia, a chronic illness, and realising that you're slightly different to the rest of your friends. We took a look at moving abroad to New York City at a young age, having conversations with managers at work and also feeling comfortable enough to open up to friends about your condition. Petra started S.C.R.E.A.M to raise awareness for Sickle Cell Anemia in the same way as other conditions such as Diabetes or Cancer and hopes to change the narrative one story at a time. There are a lot of unnecesary barriers when it comes to receiving the best healthcare possible, and in today's episode I share some useful tips on how to advocate for your health so that you're in the best possible position to recieve the healthcare that you deserve before you've even walked through the door. This is a topic I hope to explore deeper in further episodes with doctors, but for now, I break down tips, based off my experience with Sickle Cell Anemia, into the following: 1-Document your symptoms, 2-Rule out the basics, 3-Find the right words to describe your symptoms, 4-Have people in your corner. Hopefully these tips will help those experiencing chronic pain or an invisible illness.
