Just pulled the latest podcast down, to post this one. The former was fine…just some innocuous commentary on the Stand Your Ground law passed recently in Ohio. But the violence (which is becoming tragically frequent) found in the news this morning just wrecked my heart for those who are suffering…
This the LAST(!) segment on Emotional Intelligence. This installment includes some simple tools for improving empathy…that is, understanding and compassion for others. Empathy (others-awareness) is a necessary complement to self-awareness, and a critical component of overall Emotional Intelligence.
To be a Christian is to love others, to hold others interests and best as of greater value than your own. I would argue that you cannot do that without increasing emotional intelligence…and particular: Empathy.
Phase 3 of Self-awareness: Recognize your “problem patterns,” ie., where and how YOU make a mess but often don’t see it as your problem related to your low EIQ. With the pandemic spooling down the pressure to resume some semblance of normalcy is great. But a rush to normalcy at the expense of necessary learning would likely jeopardize the health and usefulness of the future church. Patience will pave the way for the best future church.

The pandemic is pushing pretty much everyone and every organization back toward the basics. Church too. Here’s a few things we’ve learned…some surprising, some not so surprising: Mission vs. Existence, Presence vs. Pretending, Engagement vs. Content, Options vs. Not, Agility vs. History.
The more who choose to vaccinate, the better, but of course there are exceptions. We can respect that can’t we?
At the core of the Christian life is the mercy of God. Only when we make our first priority to pass along the mercy we’ve been given can the rest of what is being a Christian follow…
Christians are to pass along what they’ve been given, and if we don’t much of the impact we are to have on the world…like compassion, help, etc…doesn’t happen. It can’t. To be truly Christian is to give what’s been given.

You want my view/opinion regarding the VP debate?!? Why? I’m not political, nor do I have high expectations that much can be solved or accomplished through political means. But, okay, I’ll make a couple relatively safe observations and make a request that I think is a REALLY good idea!

Ever since Jesus started the Church, he's been reshaping the Church. Mostly because only manage to trust and follow Him for short stretches of time. In any case, his mercies are new every morning, so all we have to do is [re]follow Him and he'll orchestrate His [re]church. Always has; Always will. What a blast to be entrusted with such purpose. Let's go, Vista!
Problems, challenges, impasses, trauma, change, etc...all create emotional, psychological stress. I'm no psychologist, so don't quote me on all that...just try to catch my point: The world we live in right now is internally stressful. And when people are stressed, we communicate poorly. We "communicate" nearer to the ends of the continuum that stretches from "spewing" to "stuffing." We're going to err toward screaming or silence...depending on your particular brand of foolishness. Pastor mike reminds us of a very simple tool each of us can use...if we decide to...to land us nearer the center of the continuum...where healthy communication and alleviated stress happen!
In the first two episodes of the "Do you know...the Bible" mini-series Pastor Mike talked about Who the Bible is to, and What the Bible is about. In this third episode he covers What the Bible is for. Hopefully a few more Bible episodes will come about in the future so he'll have the opportunity to create a few more titles that end with prepositions!
COVID is changing the way the world [c]onnects with each other, [c]ongregates in large groups, and gathers [c]ontent; it's also exposed systemic/operational weaknesses in all sectors of society; and it's particularly exposing the inadequacies in the church's approach to reaching the post-christian communities we live in. [re]church is our attempt to [re]shape...to learn, grow, and get better at what church does.
God's telling one big beautiful story in the Bible, and we get to peek in, be steeped in it, and be changed by it all. The whole story can be captured, generally, with the acrostic G.O.S.P.E.L. (for which I borrow heavily from NT Wright's sweep: Creation, Fall, Israel, Jesus, Church, Eternity...or maybe he uses Re-Creation)
To [re]church properly we've got to understand the purpose of the Bible, and that starts with three basic questions: Who was it written to? Who was it written for? And, why?
