The oxygen we breathe is vital to our survival – and to our skin health. As we age, our skin takes in and utilizes oxygen less effectively. Without sufficient oxygen, it lacks the energy to maintain its natural vitality. This can show up as fine lines, wrinkles, and an overall appearance that is dull, tired, and depleted. In this informative episode we talk with Karon Kelly Fernando, Education Development Specialist, Dermalogica Toronto, to learn how reawakening the skin is as simple as taking advantage of the oxygen that is all around us. Karon dives into the details of Phyto Nature Oxygen Cream, a daily liquid moisturizer that firms, lifts, and revitalizes with premium hydrating and oxygen-optimizing phytoactives. Utilizing natural actives derived from plants that thrive in low-oxygen environments, this advanced moisturizer helps skin better absorb and utilize oxygen – to leave skin looking smooth and strong. It's time to breathe new life into your skin!
Retinol and Retinoids are the gold standard when it comes to visibly helping with signs of skin aging like fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture, and enlarged pores. When it comes to Vitamin A and the skin, the active form is retinoic acid. Luckily, we can treat the skin with other forms of retinol that are easily converted to retinoic acid at home and in the treatment room. In this episode, we are joined by Lesley Corridan, Education Manager for the UK, who shares with us her vast knowledge on how to be retinol-ready in and out of your service space. Lesley delivers the most updated information on our innovation Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum and she reviews our professional-only formula Retinol Accelerator along with the Pro Retinol Service. It can show up on the skin as flaking, dullness, roughness, tightness, or even irritation. In this episode we are chatting with Dermalogica Global Curriculum Developer, Jennifer Ahartz about our new innovation Melting Moisture Masque. She shares brilliant information on dry vs dehydrated skin and why barrier lipids are so critical. In the world of a professional skin therapist, each day is a little different and so are the skins we treat. Even the journey in the business of skin looks a different for everyone, which gives us our own unique and special story to tell. This episode of Therapist Thursdays takes us to Northern Kentucky where we chat with Jillian Link, Skin Therapist at Hand & Stone in Crescent Springs. Jillian's positive energy is the perfect dose of good vibes we all need while working in the treatment room. From cosmetologist to professional skin therapist, she shares her own personal success and struggles with acneic skin and making a major shift in her career from owner to corporate employee. Our conversation is best described as fresh, raw and real as we cover a myriad of topics from education, the value of being a Dermalogica Expert and the importance of simply being kind.
About Jillian Link:
Jillian is a Licensed Master Cosmetologist with a successful career as a Professional Skin Therapist. Born and raised in Paris, Kentucky she now lives in Northern Kentucky and works at Hand & Stone as Lead Esthetician and a Dermalogica Expert. Can you have breakouts, pigmentation and wrinkles all at the same time?! In this special and engaging episode we welcome back to the podcast Angela Taylor, International Education Manager, Trade-UK, to talk all things about acne and aging. Angela gets personal as she shares with us her own skin struggles and the pesky brown spots left behind (cue-stop picking 😉). Of course, this episode wouldn't be complete without a few skin myth busters! We also cover topics like teen vs adult acne, ingredients and the top causes of adult breakouts. Do you ever wonder about the word "inflammaging"? Yep, we cover that too, right along with consultation, modalities and treatments. Listen in to discover amazing tips and information about acne and so much more!
Did you know that people who have had a lot of sun exposure can look on average 6½ years older than their actual age?! Science is now showing us that skin aging is NOT just about genetics, but there is so much more to how our skin ages such as lifestyle and environmental factors.
In this episode we are joined by Dr. Angela Murphy who shares amazing details about our exposome affects our skin, how to reinforce skin’s defenses and ways to future proof against the damage that accelerates signs of skin aging. She calls in to dish on all the extra details (and clinicals) about Dermalogica’s newest innovation Phyto Nature Firming Serum. With its biomimetic peptides and a rich botanical pharmacopeia of super-potent bio naturals, it literally reawakens the nature of younger looking skin and turns back the clock on the appearance of previous exposomic damage. This isn’t your average serum, (or podcast!) it’s a radical way new way to think about skin aging.
We are living in a very fast paced life with more to do, less time to do it and a lot of added pressures. As a result, more adults (especially women), are living with more chronic stress. Combine this with hormonal imbalances, environmental shifts and our busy lifestyles, it's no wonder we are seeing a rise in more breakouts and accelerated signs of skin aging.
In this episode we chat with Dr. Angela Murphy about our most recent innovations AGE Bright Clearing Serum and AGE Bright Spot Fader in the new Active Clearing line. Active Clearing formulas harness the best of nature and science to control breakouts and reduce the appearance of related skin aging. This updated skin segment is amazing! AND since adult skin has such a high potential for skin-aging post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) spots, having products that address both breakouts and aging simultaneously truly helps streamline treatments and boosts results.

The Dermalogica approach to skin care and skin treatments has raised the bar in the industry. The focus is all about education, personalization and human touch. We see skin services as a critical aspect in achieving and maintaining healthy skin, not as a luxury. Even the way we talk about skin treatments is different, such as Skin Therapist and Skin Treatment. To us, these names reinforce the value of a professional service and the education and personalization that goes into each and every step by highly trained skin therapists.
This episode gives us an inside look into skin treatments from professional Skin Therapist, Nicole Bassett. Nicole is with Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa in Wheaton, IL, and she has reached Dermalogica Expert status. She is also a current recipient of the 100 Hour Post Graduate Diploma from the International Dermal Institute. Nicole shares with us her professional approach to skin services, the defining difference of a Dermalogica skin treatment and her best skin care tips and advice.
This is part two of our story when classic entrepreneurship and a passion for skin care changed an industry forever. In Los Angeles, 1983, Jane and Raymond Wurwand saw a gap in skin therapy education and founded Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute; which are game-changing brands within the professional skin care industry.
In this episode, Jane shares her advice to new entrepreneurs, the importance of developing a skill set, and “if you can see the greatest pain in an industry, you’ve just spotted the greatest opportunity.” Jane also takes us on the journey of how she established FITE (Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship), a social impact initiative that helps women and girls on the path to entrepreneurship by providing access to education, vocational training, small loans and leadership skills.

In 2016, President Obama appointed Jane a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, one of a prestigious group of America’s top entrepreneurs who work with the Federal Government to help develop the next generation of entrepreneurs both at home and abroad.

This is the story of where entrepreneurship and a passion for skin care come together and an industry is changed forever. It started in Los Angeles, 1983, where Jane Wurwand, a tenured, United Kingdom-trained skin therapist new to the American "esthetician" industry, recognized that continuing skin therapy education was practically non-existent in the United States. After opening a small classroom in Marina del Rey, California under the name The International Dermal Institute (IDI), Jane invited licensed skin therapists to the postgraduate training to help make them competitive in the business.
In 1986, Dermalogica was born, as it didn’t take long for Jane to realize no product line embraced her belief of skin health as opposed to "beauty," so she developed her own. The vision was clear – a product line free of common irritants and artificial ingredients and most importantly one that would improve skin health. With more than 100,000 skin therapists trained and available in over 80 countries, Dermalogica products are the number one choice of skin care professionals and consumers worldwide.
