We look at free agency moves across both soccer and basketball during the back half of the 2021 summer.
We break down the 2021 NBA draft from the top heavy lottery picks to some of the winners/losers of the night, and teams positioning themselves for the upcoming years.
We cover a lot of ground this episode. We start with the NBA WCF and ECF and talk about the Bucks' response without Giannis, the nature of the Hawks team roster construction, and CP3 and Monty Williams sharing a touching moment. Then, we move to the Euros beginning at the round of 16 including the most exciting game so far (France v. Switzerland) and some broader themes of the tournament (PKs and VAR). Finally, we finish with some Copa America analysis that essentially boils down to Tirtho claiming that Copa is more fun than the Euros because of less intentional polish and Messi. We get together to talk about the semifinal results of the Champions League. Tirtho finally gets to watch Real Madrid lose, and speculates on Ramos leaving. Julien enjoys a PSG flame out and points out some sketchy commentary. Adith chooses Chelsea over Man City, choosing to be patriotic. We also talk basketball and the intensity of late season regular season games, Dennis Shroeder's tell-all interview in German, and playoff matchups we'd love to see. Adith rants about the Lakers.
We break down the Clippers and the culture of the team, discuss the playoff picture and some sleeper Eastern conference teams (Wizards, Hawks). We tip our hats to Curry, and favor him to win the MVP. Tirtho suggests that Embiid is in fact Hakeem but stronger and more physical. Lastly, we begin to dig into the now defunct Super League and the implications of such a league - more to come on this next week!
We dive into Liverpool, and take turns wearing the manager hat to discuss changes to right the ship. We cover the rest of the quarterfinal games and Adith predicts that Real Madrid win the Champions League this year.
We talk Ozil and Arbeloa, Barcelona, and the Prem. Parth joins the show to chat about baseball and this season's expectations (Tirtho predicts Yankees win the World Series). We dig into a venture fund that pays MiLB players up front salaries in exchange for a slice of any future MLB contracts. Finally, we talk basketball and the infamous CP3 fade away elbow jumper off the pick and roll.
We dig into the Atlanta Hawks including Trae's development, John Collins, Playoff Rondo and Lou "Chicken Fingers" Will. We consider the sharp drop in JJ Redick's production and compare it to other three point shooters ailed by seemingly simple injuries (e.g. Kyle Korver). Adith and Julien present a thesis for a different type of NBA structure where less games, an expanded play-in tournament, and better commentators (WNBA players calling NBA games and vice versa; highlight tired commentary techniques; call out the local broadcasters' ability to read the game like Mychal Thompson, Walt Frazier, etc.).
We dig into the Champions League quarterfinal preview and revisit the round of 16 results including some memorable storylines and matchups. Tirtho shares his honest opinion on Real Madrid. We also talk about Shaq's recent interviews with Jokic, Donovan Mitchell, and Christian Wood. The Utah Jazz go on a 10 game win streak, Lakers slide but Adith chalks it up to coasting through the regular season, and a look at whether Fox or SGA will make the All Star game this year (Answer: No, it will be CJ McCollum taking the last guard spot on the roster).
We dive into the divisional round playoff games and present our analyses about the 4 games this weekend. We also stray into tangents and cover gutsy 4th and 1 play calls, the best super bowl in recent memory, most emotional guys in the NFL, and Brees' character. Barcelona refuse to upgrade and Messi continues to show the board what they will be missing out on. Julien digs into MPJ. We show how Rondo and Lebron use their IQ's to dissect teams over a series, and the gritty Heat with a perfectly constructed roster that complements Butler's skills.
The Lakers cruise to the WCF over the Rockets and the boys have a long conversation about what this means for both teams. The Nuggets rally back from 3-1 (in back to back series) and the Clippers throw big leads in 3 straight games. The Raptors gave it their all but ultimately got out-talented (read: NOT outworked) by the Celtics. The Heat dismantled the Bucks (after reportedly foaming at the mouth for a chance to play the Bucks per Zach Lowe).
A quick note about the events in Kenosha, Wisconsin and the impact NBA strike. The guys talk about Damian Lillard's legacy after another first round exit, and speculate on the lakers' big man ball handlers against the small boy rockets. We also investigate at length the defensive tactics of Chris Paul. Jamal Murray vs. Donovan Mitchell! Adith makes a case for Anthony Davis never shooting another three. On this episode we discuss all the buildup to the current Messi situation, all of the chaos surrounding the recent news, and our predictions for what European football will look like once it's over. We finally get Julien's take on both Lyon and PSG in the Champions League Semifinals, and react to the last 3 games of the tournament, as well as give our final thoughts on the teams and how things may shake down next season.
