One of the major changes to Indonesia following the fall of Soeharto and Reformasi was decentralization and a shift to a direct ballot election system. The aim? To ensure that local legislatures were not simply a rubber stamp of Jakarta.
In recent years though, we have seen a strong push to return to a similar system used under the New Order and ultimately return more power to the central government. Leading this movement are the key political parties: PDIP, Golkar and Gerindra and with the bigger goal of amending election laws in and even the Constitution. They aim to have the changes completed by 2024. What are the driving forces behind this movement?
We sit with Seth Soderborg, a PhD candidate at the Department of Government at Harvard University, to discuss why parties are pushing to return to the old system, what are the driving forces behind it and how might it impact Indonesian politics going forward.

To flee to a foreign country you barely know and not knowing the language can be scary. But for many Nigerians youths, like Lucas (not his real name), going anywhere but home is necessary.
The situation in Nigeria has pushed many youths to emigrate, or attempted to emigrate. We venture along with Lucas in this journey to Indonesia. What followed his arrival in Jakarta in 2017 was nothing close to what he expected. Fast forward to today, Lucas is one of the detainees at the West Jakarta Detention Center. With no chance to earn money and no resources to facilitate his return home, Lucas tirelessly reflects upon what he should do next.

Prior to the pandemic there was push by major parties, such as PDI-P, Golkar and Gerindra, to bring more power back to the central government. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we saw some local leaders taking the initiative with battling the virus while the central government moved slowly. How might these events impact the country’s trend towards a more top-down approach by the central government?
West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, is responsible for over 50 million people in the country’s largest province and appears to have made the most progress with getting the virus under control. How will that impact his political ambitions, such as perhaps a run for presidency in 2024?
The president published a rare video of a cabinet meeting in mid-June where he expressed anger and disappointment towards ministers for not having a sense of crisis when it comes to battling the pandemic. What’s the reasoning behind the video release? Who is it aimed at and who is the target audience? Is there a cabinet reshuffle coming?
Widodo has had a less than stellar record when it comes to handling the pandemic, how is he currently viewed by the voters and how is he polling?

Although Anies may have high name recognition, ambitions for the presidency will likely be difficult to fulfil as he will be prevented from running for reelection in 2022. His controversial divisive campaign, which led to victory in 2017, will also come back to haunt him.

Indonesia’s universal healthcare system cares for millions but is now beginning to flounder while at the same time, a non-profit organization called DoctorSHARE is risking their lives to serve patients in remote parts of the country.
Launched in 2014, Indonesia’s Healthcare and Social Security Agency, locally known as BPJS Health, administers universal health care to millions of Indonesians through a heavily subsidized scheme. Although policy makers have good intentions, it's running an approximately US$1.49 billion deficit causing some health providers to be on the brink of collapse after being owed millions of dollars. Covering the program’s cost is not the only thing out of reach, BPJS services remain unattainable for many Indonesians that are outside of the main islands. Some private citizens have taken it upon themselves to provide healthcare for these areas. The Constitutional Court rejected Prabowo’s challenge to the 2019 presidential election results when he complained of “structural, systematic and massive electoral fraud”, but what does that standard even mean? Why does It matter in a large-scale election like Indonesia’s? How do you actually manipulate the voter list? Ultimately, we ask: what does one need to do in order to rig an election? In this episode, we dive deep into this issue with Seth Sorderborg, an expert on Indonesian elections and a Ph.D candidate in political science at Harvard University.

At the same time, the government began new efforts to establish peace with more than a dozen armed ethnic minority groups. This was followed by historic general elections in 2015 and a new government. International leaders lifted sanctions on the country and competed with each other to meet the defacto leader and face of the democratic movement, Aung San Suu Kyi. Now, peace negotiations have stalled, reports of genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Muslim Rohingya have gone unanswered. What are the major obstacles for the peace negotiations? We had the honor and privilege to interview Vice President, Jusuf Kalla, on April 18, 2019, less than 24 hours after the nationwide elections.

The lack of clarity of who will be Widodo’s next vice presidential candidate has caused internal friction inside the Golkar party. This situation has left several senior party members questioning Widodo’s loyalty to his closest ally.
With less than 30 days to go before parties must register their presidential candidates, Widodo’s key coalition member has become divided on whether to fully back the president for a second term as the president eyes other candidates besides Golkar chairman, Airlangga Hartarto. The General Election Commission (KPU) has set its registration period 4-10 August 2018. A decision by Widodo to pick a VP outside of Golkar could negatively impact the president’s reelection campaign as the party might withhold its resources.
