Michigan Ross stands out as a business school in part for its numerous action-based learning experiences. There are seven student-led investment funds at the University of Michigan, where students source real deals, make real investment decisions, and manage real capital while still in school.

On the season 10 finale of Business Beyond Usual, our hosts sit down with 5 MBA students who are each exploring venture capital (VC) at Ross. The guests delve into what makes each of their funds unique, sharing investment theses which often focus on both financial viability and social impact. They demystify the application process, explain how the funds are structured, and take us through the investment process — from sourcing deals, to conducting due diligence, to making the final decision.

Students pursuing VC at Ross acquire a wide variety of hard and soft skills, such as financial modeling, dealing with ambiguity, and learning how to take a bet on a team of people rather than on the product or technology alone.

At Michigan Ross, international programs allow students the opportunity to immerse themselves in new cultures, tackle business challenges from a global perspective, and have once-in-a-lifetime experiences with their classmates while building lifelong connections around the world.

On the 10th season premiere of Business Beyond Usual, our full time MBA students speak to why they went global. They discuss various programs: student-led treks through MTREK, international Multidisciplinary Action Projects (MAP), and study abroad through the MBA Global Semester Exchange Program. They dive into the day-to-day life of time abroad, talking about the challenges — from language barriers to unfamiliar corporate culture — and reminiscing on the highlights of their travels.

The students come away from their experiences with more empathy, compassion, and confidence, not to mention new friends and a deeper understanding of global business.

Strap in, this is a wild one. In this episode, Marjace visits the offices of two Michigan Ross professors to talk about everything from marketing research and rebuilding old cars from scratch to algorithmically finding lead pipes in Flint, Michigan, and fronting a band with the craziest name you’ve ever heard.

You hear from a lot of students on this show about their experience and what it’s like to be in an MBA program. But you don’t hear a lot from the professors who make the educational part of the MBA experience so dynamic.

There are a lot of talented, respected, world-renowned professors at Michigan Ross. But what do they do in their free time? Turns out, quite a bit.

The entrepreneurial spirit is strong in top MBA programs, with a fair number of MBA students entering business school each year with the intention of starting a business of their own — but what is that experience really like?

In this episode, hear entrepreneurs and MBA students Holly Meyers, Chima Mbadugha, and Sheela Lal as they take you through their respective entrepreneurial journeys and why business school is both the best time (free to fail!) and the worst time (stress is high!) to start a business.

It’s our first partners-only episode! We’ve kicked out (most of) our regular crew and have asked the partners of current MBA students to come together and dish on what it’s like to move across the world to be with your significant other while they pursue their MBA.

Pursuing an MBA can mean big changes for students -- and partners. As a partner of an MBA student, it’s natural to wonder what lies ahead as you prepare for this new chapter. Is it hard to make friends? Will you miss your ‘home’? Can you still hang out and have date nights?

Virginia Miles joins her husband and BBU producer Marjace, for an in-depth and candid discussion about the lives of MBA partners.

Plus, there’s a Newlywed-style game with buzzers and prizes and it’s just good fun.

Blockchain. Brand Management. Machine Learning. Marketing. AI. Supply Chain. Predictive Analytics. Finance. Growth Strategy.

With so many business functions mixed with industry crossovers, it’s hard to nail down exactly what a career in tech for MBA graduates looks like. If you think about it hard enough, it begs the question: “Does Tech Even Know What Tech Is?”

In this episode, we break it down. Leslie Chang and Adam Fasher gather a few tech-focused classmates to discuss how to identify which tech career might be right for you, how to prepare for interviews at various tech companies, and just what the heck is a “tech” career anyway.

For the majority of students, choosing to pursue an MBA at Michigan Ross means leaving home and moving to Ann Arbor for at least two years. But, what is that really like? Are there even any fun things to do in Michigan?

Jamell Culler is joined by fellow Ross MBA students Ivan Aragon, Sabaina Kamara, and Gaurav Dhir to discuss their experiences in Ann Arbor. They came to Ross from different parts of the U.S. (and the world), but can all agree on one thing: Ann Arbor is a great city.

Ok, two things. 1) Ann Arbor is a great city and 2) the cold isn’t that bad!

Former Michigan Ross Student Jack Kramer started the popular daily email newsletter MarketSnacks while he was still working in the corporate world, and before starting his MBA at Michigan.

Since then, together with his co-founding partner Nick Martell, Jack has been featured on CBS, CNN, Fortune, Fox Business, Fast Company — and they were both selected to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list this past year for their work on MarketSnacks.

This incredible recognition led to a podcast deal, the podcast led to company growth, and company growth led to us calling up Jack to say “Hey man, let’s have a chat about all this.” So that’s what this episode is.

Also: There’s a lot of talk about Vermont.

From resumés and admissions essays to recommendation letters and interviews, the application process for MBA programs is a gauntlet. There’s a lot of advice out there about how to navigate it and put your best foot forward, but the real experts are the ones making the final decisions. So in this episode, we ask those very experts the questions that really matter.

Leslie Chang sits down with the leaders of the MBA admissions committee at Michigan Ross to take a deep dive into the MBA application. They have an open and honest discussion about what stands out in applications (the good and the bad), and how the best thing you can do in your app materials is perhaps the most controversial thing of all: Be vulnerable and tell the truth.

In this episode, we take a look into a common way mental health issues manifest in business school students, and some strategies for how to deal with it.

First, Business Beyond Usual Producers Marjace Miles and Adam Fasher are joined by fellow students to share stories about how they’ve approached managing their own mental health during their Ross MBA.

Then, Marjace and Adam will talk with Dr. Ariana Tart-Zelvin, a post-doctoral fellow and neuropsychology expert from the Prechter Bipolar Research Program at the University of Michigan; and Julie Kaplan, a counselor from Counseling and Psychological Services, dedicated to Michigan Ross. They’ll discuss the history of impostor syndrome and mental health management among high-performing/high-achieving individuals and the resources available on the University of Michigan’s campus to support students.

Business Beyond Usual Producer Sheela Lal has some questions about what it’s like to study and recruit for finance jobs while in business school. Luckily, she’s surrounded by people who know a lot about that.

Sheela is joined by Michigan Ross MBA students Dana Miller and Rebecca Toth to talk about what “finance” really means, how recruiting for finance jobs varies wildly depending on the field you’re interested in, and why you shouldn’t be eating the food at networking events.

Hear three incredible stories told live by business school students. We’re bringing you some powerful clips from the finale of the Michigan Ross event “Story Lab,” which is developed by the Sanger Leadership Center and the Design + Business Club here at Ross.

After their stories, NPR’s Guy Raz, host of popular podcasts “How I Built This” and “TED Radio Hour,” will join us for a story of his own and thoughts on the power of authenticity in storytelling.

Story Lab is a semester-long event where Michigan Ross students participate in workshops and personal coaching from professional storytellers to understand how to tell powerful, emotional stories. They develop skills that will allow them to better inspire teams, motivate individuals, share their passions, and share a more authentic version of themselves with the world.

Special thanks to Guy Raz for joining us, the Sanger Leadership Center, and the student storytellers for allowing us to share this event with you.

In this episode, we’re pitting MBA students against their professor in a live, on-stage debate about a hot topic in the business world: Should U.S. companies voluntarily offer paid family leave for parents?

Paid time off for parents is mandatory in many countries, but not in the U.S. Several states, like California, have enacted separate paid leave policies, and support for a federal-level paid leave law has been gaining traction. But questions about the economic viability of the policy remain, and opposition to national regulation is also strong.

Listen as students Sathya Vijayakumar, MBA ‘17, and Lizzy Corn, MBA ‘17, take on Professor of Strategy Aneel Karnani!

The Great Debate 2017 at Michigan Ross was organized and developed by Sandy Mervak, MBA/MPP ‘17, and the Ross Student Government Association.

This past term for first-year MBA students at the Ross School of Business was anything but typical.

They’ve spent the past seven weeks working on projects for real companies and organizations as part of the required Multidisciplinary Action Projects course at Michigan Ross. They’ve traveled all across the country and around the world to meet with executives, conduct research, and immerse themselves in the work. It’s the only class they’ve taken this term, and these projects have been their sole focus -- 400 students working with 74 different companies in 25 countries.

In this episode, we talk with five of those students as they finish up their projects.

We’ll hear from:

  • William Stockert, whose team is working directly with the CEO of the

luxury brand Shinola to expand into a new product line * Claire Fletcher, who is in India, helping GE Power bring affordable electricity to parts of the country; * Caroline Vidal Netto, who is working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help them expand the number of wishes granted in a given year; * Parker Caldwell, who is working with a startup to bring life-saving healthcare technology to patients in India; and * Ignacio Calvo, who is helping IBM explore business possibilities within their cloud computing enterprise.

Women are incredibly impactful leaders, but there is still a lot of work left to do to open the doors of opportunity for women throughout the business world. Today, women make up less than 5 percent of CEO jobs at fortune 500 companies – despite mountains of research and evidence showing that having more women in leadership roles leads to better business performance.

In this episode, we'll hear from an expert on why it's important to have women in these roles and what has been holding that progress back, we'll hear a bit about how men and allies can help, and we'll hear from two students working hard to empower future women leaders while they’re pursuing their MBAs.

As we heard in the first part of this episode, the role businesses should play in society is a topic of much debate in the world today – and there’s no question that MBA students and the leaders of tomorrow will play a big role in shaping the outcome of those discussions.

So, how are business school students preparing themselves for working at the intersection of business and society? In Part Two of our episode exploring this issue, Ramu and guests talk with leaders working in the social impact space, and discuss some of the unique ways they’re able to make a difference while still in school.

It's said that the world's largest corporations have more money and more power than most countries on Earth - but does that mean they are obligated to be good stewards? Are the economic incentives of socially conscious business strong enough to make it an imperative? Or - should the bottom line and shareholder value be the only measure by which we evaluate business success?

These are big questions being played out in the press and the business world every day. Today, we talk with two professors at Michigan Ross School of Business who have some differing views on what role businesses should play in society.

This is our first two-part episode. Part two will focus on ways MBA students can get involved in socially conscious work while students and dissect the ways MBAs can make an impact in the work force after graduation. In this episode Ramu is joined by two guests who can help him answer those questions. We’ll also hear from someone on the ground in Silicon Valley, making connections with fast-growing tech companies looking to hire MBA graduates.

Professor Michael Jensen at the Ross School of Business is an international research fellow with the Oxford University Center for Corporate Reputation. His research into the role of identity, reputation, and status in markets and social networks has been influential in helping companies large and small understand corporate strategy and strategic alliances.

Host Ramu Annamalai sat down with Professor Jensen to discuss how his research connects to the world of business school rankings, and whether or not we’re actually making worse decisions when we take status and rankings into account.
