Theology of Music: Recent Episodes

Cliff Lambert

As an associate professor of music and worship and part-time worship pastor, Cliff has spent years thinking deeply about the songs that we sing together as a church during our corporate worship services. Yet, instead of being another deconstructing voice, Cliff seeks to foster unique and edifying conversations with folks who create and lead the songs we sing in corporate worship.

I’m really excited for you to listen to this month’s episode of the podcast. I’ve been trying to get Jon on since June, and we were finally able to coordinate our schedules this month. As we were talking, I kept thinking that it was so worth the wait! If you’re a worship leader, let me encourage you to follow @jonmthurlow on Instagram. Jon is a worship pastor whose posts always remind worship leaders to get back to the heart of worship by allowing our leadership to flow out of time in the Word and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us as we behold Jesus through the Scriptures.

In this episode, Jon and I dive into the importance of songs of lament in corporate worship. We briefly touch on what they are and why they are so necessary in our corporate worship settings. I really appreciate the different angles from which Jon approaches the much-needed element in our corporate worship. Our prayer is that it encourages worship leaders to think about how they design and lead their congregations in worship.

As always, leave us your feedback. We’d love to hear from you.

Keith discusses how his personal journey has shaped his approach to ministry, highlighting the significance of focusing on Jesus rather than image, and the importance of creating a healthy worship environment. In this conversation, Keith and Cliff explore the transformative journey of leadership within the church, emphasizing the importance of personal revelations, relational dynamics, and the need for spiritual foundations. They discuss the challenges of equipping worship leaders, the significance of building trust and culture within teams, and the impact of personal integrity on leadership effectiveness. The dialogue highlights the necessity of aligning actions with values and the role of expectations in fostering growth and discipleship. This month’s episode is a conversation I had with Adam Stinespring, worship leader, realtor, and designer of CreativeWorshipFlow.com, a worship planning tool using AI to assist worship leaders in putting together intentional times of worship for their congregations. I’ve known Adam for about 7 years, first as a music and worship student at Liberty University. A few months ago, Adam contacted me wanting feedback on something he had been working on with regard to designing musical worship sets. He wanted to know what kinds of things I take into consideration when putting together songs for corporate worship gatherings. He then let me know he was working on a website that uses AI to assist worship leaders. My initial response of “That sounds cool” was mixed with hesitation when I thought about the possibility of a tool like this encouraging worship leaders to become lazy and disengaged. After diving a little deeper, I realized Adam is giving worship leaders a tool to do the opposite. I was very interested in his approach, and I think you will be too.

I pray this episode provides some thought-provoking encouragement for those who plan worship services. As always, leave us your feedback. We’d love to hear from you.

As I was finishing up my doctoral studies in worship a couple of years ago, I came across a book called “The Greatest Worship Leader,” by author and worship pastor at Mercy Hill Church in North Carolina, Jon Azzarello. I loved the book so much that I began to follow Jon on Instagram. His carousels with tidbits of encouragement for worship leaders were both encouraging and challenging. When he reached out to me, I knew I had to have him on the podcast…and the timing of him being on this month’s episode, I believe, was divinely ordained. This episode will drop on August 15, and Jon has a brand new “coffee table” book coming out the very next day called “When We Sing”. Here's the link so you can pre-order a copy: linktr.ee/jonazzarello

It was such a refreshing conversation that deviated from the typical topic of song choices in worship to the actual act of singing… not only the scriptural command to sing, but also singing’s benefits to the singer.

As a worshiper and as a worship leader, I know you’re going to benefit from every word in this episode provides. Our prayer is that it encourages you to not just listen to songs, but to sing them, too. As always, leave us your feedback. We’d love to hear from you.

This month’s episode is a conversation I had with Dalton Shaffer, Music Ministry and Liturgy Director at Candeo church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. I’ve followed Dalton for a while on Instagram, and his inspiration for worship leaders is always ROCK solid. A few weeks ago, he had a post titled “Stop Singing this song in your church,” and it got my attention. But this wasn’t just clickbait bashing mega church worship songwriters and shallow worship leaders who only focus on the vibe a song creates. After diving a little deeper, I realized he was giving worship leaders some great insight into what we should be considering when choosing songs for corporate worship.

My guest on this month’s episode is an experienced worship pastor, educator, and songwriter who has provided oversight to one of the largest multi-campus churches in Virginia. I knew I wanted to pull from his expertise and finally got a chance to talk with Canadian native, Travis Doucette, the creator of a brand new training resource for worship leaders… myworshiptrainer.com. Check it out!

I’ve known Travis for several years through our connections at Liberty University. The thing I love about Travis is that before his abilities as a musician, artist, or leader, He identifies as a child of God, and that reality guides everything he does.
In this first part of a two-part episode, Travis and I discuss the inevitable relationship between the worship pastor/leader/planner and AI. We both understand the spiritual tensions that come with utilizing technology, especially technology that produces human-like responses. You’re going to love Travis’ insights into ways worship leaders can use AI and the safeguards they can put in place to ensure corporate worship is biblically sound and Holy Spirit-led. Travis currently resides in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. I pray this episode provides encouragement and guidance as you lead your church in worship. Leave us some feedback with some of your thoughts as well.

My guest on this month's episode was long overdue! I got a chance to talk with Dr. Ryan Loche, the co-founder of The Church Collective https://www.instagram.com/thechurchcollective/. If you’re unfamiliar with this non-profit that encourages and resources worship leaders, you need to check it out on Instagram. I’ve known Dr. Loche for about 10 years, and he’s the real deal. He has served as a worship pastor in California and continues to pour his experience into young worship leaders at the collegiate level.

In this episode, Dr. Loche and I discuss worship song contextualization. In other words, choosing songs that are not only biblically true and musically singable but also relatable on a “need” level within our churches. You’re going to love Dr. Loche’s insights in these areas. Dr. Loche currently resides in the Nashville area with his wife, Charity, and their four children. I pray this episode provides encouragement and guidance as you lead your church of worship. Leave us some feedback with some of your thoughts as well.

On this month’s episode, I bring back former guest, Justin Kintzel. While I’ve known Justin for a while through our connections at Liberty University and a quick coffee shop chat a couple of years ago, this will be my first time interviewing him. Justin has written several songs for corporate worship and currently serves as the worship pastor of Grace Church in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. He and his wife Ashley have 4 children all still at home. They are busy folks! I asked Justin a few weeks ago if he saw any trends in corporate worship about the songs worship leaders use in corporate worship. He and I both recognized a bit of polarization that calls for a metric when choosing songs and I loved his balanced approach. I don’t want to give too much away, but the principles he shares are invaluable for guiding us as we shepherd our congregations in truth and love. Enjoy this month's episode and leave us some feedback with some of your thoughts as well.

Up from the ashes, hope will arise
Death is defeated, the King is alive!

In this episode, Pastor Joel and his friend Christopher Lord unpack the popular modern hymn, "In Christ Alone" written by Keith Getty / Stuart Townend.

Lyrics:

Verse 1:
In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

VerseIn Christ alone! - who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.

Verse 3There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

Verse 4No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

In this podcast, Pastor Joel and Cliff Lambert compare and contrast the two songs "There is a Fountain" by William Cowper and "Redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb" by People and Songs.

There is a Fountain

  1. There is a fountain filled with blood,
    Drawn from Immanuel’s veins,
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
    Lose all their guilty stains:
    Lose all their guilty stains,
    Lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
    Lose all their guilty stains.
  2. The dying thief rejoiced to see
    That fountain in His day;
And there have I, though vile as he,
    Washed all my sins away:
    Washed all my sins away,
    Washed all my sins away;
And there have I, though vile as he,
    Washed all my sins away.
  3. Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
    Shall never lose its pow’r,
Till all the ransomed church of God
Are safe, to sin no more:
Are safe, to sin no more,
    Are safe, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed church of God
Are safe, to sin no more.
  4. E’er since by faith I saw the stream
    Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die:
And shall be till I die,
    And shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.
  5. When this poor, lisping, stamm’ring tongue
    Lies silent in the grave,
Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save:
I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save,
    I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save;
Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save.

Redeemed by the Blood of the LambI went down to the crimson river
Left my burdens on the shore
I went down a sinner, came up a saint
Died with Christ, now I'm reborn

Yes, He washed me in His mercy
And He cleansed me with His blood
Now I stand complete, I have been set free
I found life there in the flood

Not the same, I am changed
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb
By His grace, I am saved
I'm His child, forever, I am
Hallelujah
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb

Now I have the living water
From the well that won't run dry
All the pangs of life have been satisfied
By the precious blood of Christ

When it's time to cross that river
I will shine in glorious light
When He calls me home, I'll fall at His throne
And forever worship Christ
And forever worship Christ
I'll forever worship Christ
I'll forever worship Christ

Not the same, I am changed
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb
By His grace, I am saved
I'm His child, forever, I am
Not the same, I am changed
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb
By His grace, I am saved
I'm His child, forever, I am
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb

Oh redeemed, I'm redeemed, how I love to proclaim it
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb
Redeemed by His infinite mercy
His child, and forever, I am

We overcome by the blood of the Lamb
We overcome by the blood of the Lamb
And the word of our testimony
The word of our testimony
We overcome by the blood of the Lamb
We overcome by the blood of the Lamb
And the word of our testimony
The word of our testimony

Jesus be the center
It's all about You
Yes, it's all about You
From my heart to the heavens
Jesus be the center
It's all about You
Yes, it's all about You
From my heart to the heavens
Jesus be the center
It's all about You
Yes, it's all about You
From my heart to the heavens
Jesus be the center
It's all about You
Yes, it's all about You

[Verse 3]
Jesus be the center of Your Church
Jesus be the center of Your Church
And every knee will bow
And every tongue shall confess You...
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus

[Bridge]
From my heart to the heavens
Jesus be the center
It's all about You
Yes, it's all about You
From my heart to the heavens
Jesus be the center
It's all about You
Yes, it's all about You
From my heart to the heavens
Jesus be the center
It's all about You
Yes, it's all about You
From my heart to the heavens
Jesus be the center
It's all about You
Yes, it's all about You...

In this episode, Pastor Joel and Cliff Lambert discuss the treasured hymn, "Be Thou My Vision" written by Mary E. Byrne and Eleanor H. Hull.

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art

High King of Heaven, my victory won
May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'n's Sun
Heart of my own heart, whate'er befall
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all

This episode is part 2 of episode on "What A Beautiful Name" written by Ben Fielding and Brooke Ligertwood from Hillsong Worship. Join Pastor Joel and Pastor Nathan Dodd (from Liberty Baptist) as they finish their discussion.

Verse 1:You were the Word at the beginning
One with God the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in You our Christ

Chorus:What a beautiful Name it is
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a beautiful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

Verse 2:You didn't want heaven without us
So Jesus, You brought heaven down
My sin was great, Your love was greater
What could separate us now

Bridge:Death could not hold You, the veil tore before You
You silenced the boast of sin and grave
The heavens are roaring the praise of Your glory
For You are raised to life again
You have no rival, You have no equal
Now and forever, God, You reign
Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name above all names

Chorus 2:What a powerful Name it is
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a powerful Name it is
Nothing can stand against
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

In this episode, Pastor Joel and Cliff talk about the song "Graves Into Gardens" written by
Steven Furtick, Chris Brown, Tiffany Hammer, and Brandon Lake of Elevation Worship.

Lyrics

Verse 1
I searched the world
But it couldn't fill me
Man's empty praise and treasures that fade
Are never enough
Then You came along
And put me back together
And every desire is now satisfied
Here in Your love (hey)

Chorus
Oh, there's nothing better than You
There's nothing better than You
Lord, there's nothing
Nothing is better than You
(Oh, yes I know it's true)
(Come on, tell 'em, hey)

Verse 2
I'm not afraid
To show You my weakness
My failures and flaws, Lord, You've seen them all
And You still call me friend
'Cause the God of the mountain
Is the God of the valley
There's not a place Your mercy and grace
Won't find me again

Bridge 1You turn mourning to dancing
You give beauty for ashes
You turn shame into glory
You're the only one who can (come on)
You turn mourning to dancing
You give beauty for ashes
You turn shame into glory (tell 'em now)
You're the only one who canYou turn graves into garden
You turn bones into armies
You turn seas into highways
You're the only one who can (please sing for me)
You're the only one who can

Bridge 2You turn graves into gardens
You turn bones into armies
You turn seas into highways
You're the only one who can
You turn graves into gardens
You turn bones into armies
You turn seas into highways
You're the only one who can
You're the only one who can
You're the only one who can

You turn mourning to dancing
You give beauty for ashes
You turn shame into glory
You're the only one who can
You turn graves into gardens
You turn bones into armies
You turn seas into highways
You're the only one who can
You turn graves into gardens
You turn bones into armies
You turn seas into highways
You're the only one who can
You're the only one who can
You're the only one who can
Jesus, you're the only one

"Is He Worthy?"
In this episode, Pastor Joel and his good friend, Pastor Nate, discuss the 2018 Dove award nominee for "Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year" which was written by Andrew Peterson and Ben Shive in early 2018.

Lyrics:Verse:
Do you feel the world is broken?
(We do)
Do you feel the shadows deepen?
(We do)
But do you know that all the dark won't stop the light from getting through?
(We do)
Do you wish that you could see it all made new?
(We do)

Is all creation groaning?
(It is)
Is a new creation coming?
(It is)
Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst?
(It is)
Is it good that we remind ourselves of this?
(It is)

Chorus:
Is anyone worthy?
Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave
He is David's root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
Of all blessing and honor and glory
Is He worthy of this?
He is

Verse:
Does the Father truly love us?
(He does)
Does the Spirit move among us?
(He does)
And does Jesus, our Messiah hold forever those He loves?
(He does)
Does our God intend to dwell again with us?
(He does)

Chorus:
Is anyone worthy?
Is anyone whole?
Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave
He is David's root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave
From every people and tribe
Every nation and tongue
He has made us a kingdom and priests to God
To reign with the Son

Is He worthy?Is He worthy?
Of all blessing and honor and glory
Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
Is He worthy of this?
He is!
Is He worthy? Is He worthy?
He is!
He is!
