An ungrateful, complaining spirit can become an obstacle blocking us from God. The people of Israel are grumbling and complaining to Moses about God’s provision for them. How does God roll this stone away? Moses strikes the rock and out comes water. We know from the New Testament that the rock is Christ. God strikes His Son, the rock, on the cross and He becomes the source of hearts overflowing with living water of a grateful faith.

Proud, strict, rich, religious, in control vs. seeking to know God in growing doubt. That’s Nicodemus. The only thing standing between him and God is his pride. So Jesus asks the impossible of such a man – you must start all over; you must be born again. “How can a man be born when he is old?” How can I relearn everything? How can proud Nicodemus admit he needs to? Jesus knows we can’t. The stone is too heavy. Only God can roll it away and give new birth. He invites us to humble ourselves, like the Israelites did looking to the bronze snake. Even so Jesus is lifted up and all who look to Him are given new life.

At the end of Genesis 2, Adam and Eve felt no shame. They had no reason; they had no sin. They had the perfect relationship with God, and with each other. Then they sinned; shame entered the picture. They hid from God. That’s what they did. That’s what shame drove David to do. But then God called to them to come out of hiding. It was when they came out, when David confessed, and when God forgave that God removed their shame. He forgave their sin. He restored their honor.

Crossroads and intersections are dangerous places where people and vehicles collide. Churches, families, and individuals at the crossroads also run collide with each other, even while trying to do God’s work. The key is to “stick together” around Christ and move forward with Him.

Too often our sinful words and actions, as well as those of others, shape our identity and our lives in a negative manner. Beginning at the Baptism of Jesus and continuing through His life, death, and resurrection, God gives us a lifetime of new beginnings that daily redefine who we are as God’s children, and thus how we live.
The Fourth Sunday in Advent turns our attention toward the Nativity of Our Lord. With the blessed Virgin Mary, we await the coming of the Christ, her Son, conceived in her womb by the Word and Spirit of God. This fulfillment of the sign once given to the house of David, that “the virgin shall conceive and bear a son” (Is. 7:14), is now given to us in the Gospel. It declares that salvation is by His grace alone, entirely His work and a free gift. It also is the way and means by which the Lord our God is Immanuel, “God with us.” The almighty and eternal Son of God is conceived and born of Mary, and is thus “descended from David according to the flesh” (Rom. 1:3–4). He comes in this way to save us with His own flesh and blood; wherefore, He is called “Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21). As Joseph received this sign in faith and immediately “did as the angel of the Lord commanded him” (Matt. 1:24), we also live by faith in this Holy Gospel.

Surveys have confirmed that 90 percent of our society prays. What that means is that people recognize their need for somebody greater than themselves. Someone to help them through a problem. Jesus came to save us from sin that separates us from God. And he saved us to be His people. Jesus birth is the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s promise for salvation.

John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ‘Repent’” (Matt. 3:1–2). His preaching of repentance for the forgiveness of sins prepared people for the coming of Christ into the world. Advent is a time for reconciliation. We have peace with God and peace with one another.

Advent is to be a time of watching and waiting. We need to always be ready for the coming of the Lord. How do we do that? By His Word, we “walk in the light of the LORD” (Is. 2:5). That is to live in love, which “does no wrong to a neighbor” (Rom. 13:10). We “cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light,” for “salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed” (Rom. 13:11, 12). The entire Christian life is a time to wake and watch, “for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming” (Matt. 24:42).

What is the kingdom of God?
1. How you live not where you live.

2. Place to serve.
The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. ~Matthew 20:28
Jesus has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. ~Revelation 1:6
3. Enter not by force but by grace.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. ~Ephesians 2:8
4. Truth
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~Romans 6:23
Be shepherds of the church of God, which he brought with his own blood. ~Acts 20:28
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation...For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. ~Colossians 1:15, 19-20

God wants our giving to be joyful and fulfilling. Through our giving, we worship and honor our Lord. Giving expresses our gratitude for God’s love and grace given to us through His Son, Jesus, who has conquered sin, death, and the devil through His death and resurrection. Giving can fill the hunger pains of a little boy. It can also help the homeless and helpless, and it can support the ministry of our church. Through faith, we can share the abundance God has given us. As we do, we will find “Joy in sharing God’s Blessings.”
Pastor Allen Bauer delivered his message Sunday, November 10, 2019, from the Stewardship Series entitled, "The Joy of Managing God's Blessings".
God entrusts each of us with various amounts of time, talents and money. As God’s stewards, we area called to manage our blessings according to God’s will. God is the source and owner of all things so our goal is to please and honor Him with how we manage our gifts and blessings.
Here is week one of our new series. In the beginning God created life, and He sustains it through His power. The life we have today and each day that we will enjoy in the future are gifts from God. James 1:7 reads, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…” The air we breathe, the food we eat, and the places we live are all made possible because of God’s grace. Through His Word and Sacraments, we receive His grace that gives us life eternal. We receive His love that didn’t spare His only Son, and we receive His forgiveness along with His victory over sin and death. God is the giver, and we are the receivers. As God’s redeemed people, we receive God’s gifts with joy and thanksgiving. What a privilege it is to receive God’s love, grace, and mercy daily. Through faith, we become dependent upon God’s gifts, and we receive them gratefully and cheerfully.
