Our 2024/25 Ryan Opera Center Recital Series opens with a musical journey featuring second-year Ensemble members Japanese-American mezzo-soprano Sophia Maekawa and pianist Michael Banwarth. Highlights include music by Franz Schubert, Charles Ives, and Francis Poulenc. We will also hear Ms. Maekawa sing and speak to us about the Japanese song “Who turns the light off” by Hikaru Hayashi, and Mr. Banwarth will share insights about Henri Dutilleux’s “Il n’y avait que des troncs déchirés” from Deux Sonnets de Jean Cassou.

And we will hear Mr. Thompson as Mefistofele in Boito’s “Ecco il mondo” and in two arrangements by Steven Mark Kohn of “Ten Thousand Miles Away” and “The Ocean Burial”. We will also hear music by Franz Schubert, Gabriel Fauré, Roger Quilter, and Kosaku Yamada. Our singers will be joined by Ryan Opera Center pianist Michael Banwarth.

He’ll also be joined by pianist Michael Banwarth in music by Jules Massenet, Jaime León, and Frederico Moreno Torroba.

Third-year soprano Denis Vélez will be featured along with pianist Chris Reynolds in a program featuring music from beloved operas such as Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, Mozart’s Idomeneo, Massenet’s Manon, and Puccini’s Turandot. Our recital features two new voices to the Ryan Opera Center. Our recital features some opera favorites from Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette and Faust as well as Verdi‘s Rigoletto. Soprano Lindsey Reynolds will be heard in André Previn’s moving Three Dickinson Songs — which was inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson — as well as music from the musical Cabaret. Bass Wm. Clay Thompson will be featured in John Jacob Niles’s American Folk and Gambling Songs — a collection of music from the early 20th century — as well songs from Viktor Ullman’s Liederbuch des Hafis. They will be joined on the piano by Chris Reynolds and Donald Lee III.
