How long should my On Hold Message be ?The length of an on-hold message depends on your average hold time and the number of messages you want to convey to your callers. Generally, an on-hold message should be concise and focused on the most important information.

You should look at the average hold time and make sure that you have enough messages to cover that period of time. For example, if someone is on hold for an average of two minutes, you want to have at least three messages with a good gap of music in between each one and an on-hold program is three to four minutes in length and an average of 200 to 300 words. The message usually begins with a three to five second musical intro and has 12 to15 second musical interludes between announcements.

The length of an on-hold message also depends on the type of phone system you have. If you have a traditional system that operates on a continuous loop, you may want to keep your messages shorter and add an acknowledgement message (thank you for holding, we appreciate your patience, etc.) between every three or four announcements. If you have a cloud-based system that starts the on-hold message from the beginning for every caller, you may want to prioritize your messages in order of importance and relevance.

2. When prompted to ‘record’ Play your recorded message via speaker into the mobile phone directly.

There is no alternative to this method – UNLESS you are using a VoIP or Cloud service whereby you will be able to upload the audio file directly to your service.

What does IVR mean ? In the word of telephones it means Interactive Voice Response .

You have probably come across it many times when contacting your bank or insurance company. Typically you are introduced to the world of IVR when you call in and are greeted with a message that says Press 1 for this or press 2 for that. This is an IVR message.

If used correctly this can be extremely time saving for your callers who can access the right person or department simply by selecting the correct corresponding number on their key pad that will connect them to that department, without the need to explain yourself to anyone who answers the call. Then only to be put On Hold until they find the right person to take the call.

Voice Over for the Building Trade

Any on another topic, how do you like you tea? Interesting reading on a survey recently published and it turns out not all builders like their tea STRONG.

A builder's brew may be shorthand for any ‘good, strong tea’ but it seems there are differences between how each tradesman takes their cuppa.

In fact, a poll of 2,000 workers reveals there is only one thing that different trades have in common – they all take milk.

It found other preferences, including how long the teabag is left in for and which biscuit is the best accompaniment, varied widely across professions.

Ironically, the study also found that builders do not like a ‘strong tea’ but preferred a weaker cuppa, leaving the bag in for between ten and 30 seconds.

Voice Over for Medical Products

Medical product voice over work does require a large amount of research before we even go anywhere near the voice over booth. Why?

Well it takes 8 years to become a doctor. You can't expect a voice over artists to master some of the medical terminology in an afternoon's recording session. That is why occasionally a price premium maybe applied to a project due to the amount of time and sometimes the number of retakes a session may need.

Voice Over Software

When choosing how we edit and create voice over recordings we all have our own preference. Mine currently is Adobe Audition although in reality the monthly subscription is a little on the high side it does come with a suit of addon's that can assist with the creative process.

There are of course some free software products that work equally as well if you only intend to record your voice and don't intend to much more. You will need to learn how to edit out any errors that you may make, you ay need to remove breaths between sentences, but don't over do it. Often by silencing or deleting breaths you can bring to the attention of the listener the ambient background noise that will be apparent when listened to through headphones, or if the volume is turned up. They are some techniques you can try to eliminate these but if you start with a quiet room with little or preferable no ambient noise reflection then that is a good start to making your voice recording sound good

Voice Over Influences I was recently asked why I got into voice over work. There are several reasons. I used to work in radio which is a whole other story, but from there for me it was a natural progression to start to provide voice over recordings.

I had two major influences in my teens that took me on this journey of voice over work.

It started with the amazing opening monologue from Richard Burton at the beginning of Jeff Wayn'es musical version of War of the Worlds.
