We are disciples of Christ. We join with each other and other disciples to participate in Jesus’ mission for the world, which centers around His role as the One “who takes away the sin of the world.” As disciples of Christ, we seek to know Him, serve Him, and share Him with others.
Conclude your time in prayer today. Talk with the Lord about how He might want to use you as a loved and chosen disciple.

His use of this phrase “in the Lord” points to the unity believers have in Christ. Because all believers are “in Christ,” all believers are in Christ together. This isn’t to say that there won’t be conflicts or disagreements between believers - even seasoned and mature Christians. Euodia and Syntyche had “labored side by side” with Paul (v3). We don’t know the nature of the disagreement between the two ladies, but we should see by his plea to them in a public letter to the whole church that any break in unity among believers was no small matter.
To experience the peace of God, far more wonderful than the human mind can understand, we are told to refuse to worry about anything. Why is this what we must do in order to experience the peace of God? Because worry is the #1 thing that can steal your peace. Financial trouble? Don’t worry about anything. Anxious about the kids? Don’t worry about anything. Stressed about work? Don’t worry about anything. Concerned about marriage or relationship troubles? Don’t worry about anything. Worried about health or weight? Don’t worry about anything. There is no exception given in this verse. It doesn’t say don’t worry about anything, except for maybe money.. or health.. or work. No! It says “Don’t worry about anything.”
Our opening passage is Philippians 3:12-21
Paul says he is pressing on toward the goal. He refuses to look back, and he strains to move forward to fulfill God’s plan for his life. He wants to accomplish all Christ had in mind for him when he “took hold” of him on the Damascus Road.
When Christ took hold of you, He too had a great deal in mind for you and your life. What does it mean for you personally to refuse to look back, but to “press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of you?”
Paul sets an example of living in joy in the book of Philippians. We can find 5 “Happiness Habits” that Paul lives out in Philippians 3.
Our opening verse is philippians 3:3, The Living Bible Translation & Message version:
“We Christians glory in what Christ Jesus has done for us and realize that we are helpless to save ourselves.” Philippians 3:3
“We couldn’t carry this off by our own efforts, and we know it” Philippians 3:3 (MSG)
Paul relaxes in the fundamental truth of God’s grace. He finds joy every day, regardless of the problems that swirl around him, in the fact that Jesus came to love him, to save him, and to have a relationship with him. He was no longer dependent on anything that he, as a devout Jew, had done for God, but rather, on what God had done for him.
Happiness Habit: Wake up every day with a heart spilling over with gratitude for the fact that God’s love for you isn’t based on what you’ve done but on who He is.
“Finally, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord!” Paul is reminding us that God is our only real source of joy and comfort. All too often, we rely more on God’s good gifts - health, family, loved ones, financial security - than on God himself. But when believers rejoice in the Lord, they are finding joy and thanksgiving in His goodness - with or without His gifts.
Do you have the tendency to find more joy in God’s gifts than in God himself?
Scripture reminds us of the need for a “circumcised heart.”
Deuteronomy 30:6 says: The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.
Only true circumcision - a change of the heart - leads to genuine worship of God. Our next passage is Romans 2:28-29
What is “true” circumcision?
A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. 29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.
Philippians has been full of personal updates and practical matters. Paul now continues to give personal updates on two servants for Christ who demonstrate the ideals and characteristics that Paul had been encouraging in vv 1:27-2:18. Both Timothy and Epaphroditus have “served” Paul in his time of need, and Epaphroditus was even willing to lay down his life for the gospel message.
It is not uncommon for Paul to give updates on others involved in sharing the gospel message. But it is perhaps more common for them to occur at the end of a letter.
Paul calls us to “work out” our salvation for it is God who “works in” us. Notice the parallel in these phrases. We have our own contribution to make in the unfolding of our salvation, and God has a part to work in you.
Note, Paul does not say we work for our salvation, but that we work out our
Read: Ephesians 2:8-9
Paul’s use of the phrase “work out your salvation” can be compared to working out. We already have our salvation through our faith in Christ. We are not working to gain salvation. Just like in working out, you are not creating a new muscle that hadn’t existed in your body before, you are strengthening the muscles that God had already given you. So it is with this verse. We are not working for salvation that didn’t exist, we are strengthening ourselves as Christians - we are building our “Christian muscles!

Notice Paul’s opening word in this passage (in the NIV translation). “Therefore” is a connecting word, and he’s linking his hymn of praise to Christ in vv6-11 to instructions on how to apply the example of Christ’s humble obedience to their lives.
He calls the Philippians to “work out” their salvation.
This may initially sound like he is suggesting that salvation comes by works rather than by saving grace, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Reread vv12-13. What keywords do you see that make it clear that salvation does not come through works?

Happiness is found through humility. A heart filled with pride cannot be a heart filled with joy. Self gratification and self service never lead to true joy, but rather service leads to joy. In a world focused on self-care, the value of serving others and valuing others as more important than ourselves is easily overlooked
Read Philippians 2:1-11 once again, NCV version:
“Does your life in Christ give you strength? Does his love comfort you? Do we share together in the spirit? Do you have mercy and kindness? If so, make me very happy by having the same thoughts, sharing the same love, and having one mind and purpose. When you do things, do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Instead, be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves. Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others.
In your lives you must think and act like Christ Jesus

For I know that as you pray for me and the Spirit of Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to my deliverance.
Paul’s Life for Christ
20 For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. 21 For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. 22 But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better. 23 I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. 24 But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live.
25 Knowing this, I am convinced that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith. 26 And when I come to you again, you will have even more reason to take pride in Christ Jesus because of what he is doing through me.
Live as Citizens of Heaven
27 Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News. 28 Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies.
In his book How Happiness Happens, Max Lucado states: “Happiness happens when you give it away.” The world teaches us that happiness is found by putting yourself first, focusing on self care, self love, and self gratification. Self care and self love are utterly important, and God desires that we love ourselves and care for ourselves out of that love. But true happiness is found through self sacrifice, not self gratification.
Consider the following verses:
1 Corinthians 10:24
Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.
Philippians 2:3-4
Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
Matthew 20:26-28
But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. 28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

He gives three examples in these verses to prove his point. What are they? (hint: vv12-13, v14, vv15-18)
How would you explain in your own words how Paul's imprisonment strengthened believers?
Can you make a personal connection to what Paul was observing? He saw God’s work being furthered because of the trial he was enduring. Have you ever experienced a time in your life in which a trying or difficult situation furthered either your own walk with God or someone’s else’s walk with God? What happened? How did God use that experience to spread the gospel, increase faith, or bless ______________________________________________________________________________________
Paul faced stark opposition. But the opposition to the gospel turned into opportunity. Like a master weaver, God was at work behind the scenes, weaving together a beautiful tapestry. God was behind it all; God was at work. Paul’s opponents wished him harm, but God was using it for good.
Can you think of stories in scripture that God used evil and suffering for good?

In Rick Warren’s study “The Habits of Happiness,” he says that happiness isn’t something you look for, but rather create. Happiness is a byproduct of our lives in Christ, and our habits create our happiness. Happy habits, he says, are just as addicting as bad habits, but a lot more rewarding. Really think about that for a moment.
Can you think of any bad habits you have that don’t aid in your development of happiness, joy, peace, or character?

The Book of Philippians is commonly referred to as the “Joy Book,” and rightly so as Paul uses the words joy or rejoice at least 14 times. Despite writing this letter from a prison cell, Paul is filled with joy because his joy comes from Jesus, not his surroundings.
The best evidence indicates that Paul wrote this letter while imprisoned in Rome while awaiting Caesar’s decision regarding his fate. Paul had a long history with the Philippian Christians. (Feel free to look back in the book of Acts at Paul’s first encounters with the Philippians - the conversion of Lydia’s family, the healing of a demon-possessed girl, and the conversion of Philippian jailer and his family.
Acts 16:6-40)
Paul maintained close ties with the church of Philippi. The Philippians showed kindness to Paul and sent Paul support when he was in Thessalonica and while imprisoned in Rome.

Sometimes God feels distant. Sometimes it seems that God isn’t cooperating. Sometimes God seems late or unfair. Does He hear my prayers? Does He care? Can God be trusted in times of trouble?

Paul describes a pretty grim picture of his life in these verses. He feels hard-pressed, persecuted, and struck down. Yet there is a hopeful note throughout these verses. How would you put into your own words the essence of that positive, hopeful note? To what extent is a similar hope present in you?
What do you think you need in order to have a similar positive and hopeful tone in describing your life experiences?
Why do you think Paul was able to be positive even in the midst of pain? What personal barriers (such as hurry, anxiety, fatigue, anger, or selfish ambition) keep you from being as positive as you could be?

God wants you to choose life. God wants you to choose blessings. God wants you to make wise choices. To be wise about our choices, we must be wise to the fact that so many of our actions, behaviors, and choices are governed by our habits. Our habits shape our lives, and unfortunately, even when we are aware of our bad habits, it is difficult to replace them. It’s one thing to know we have bad habits, to know what they are and how unbeneficial they are; it’s another thing to transform those bad habits into good ones.
Can you think of any ways in which having a spirit of wisdom regarding your health, fitness, and physical well-being might help you to know God better?

The truth that you are a new, beautiful creation in God the Father. The truth that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. The truth that you were bought at a high price and are now called to give your life fully to the discipleship of Christ.

**Many are familiar with the Hebrew word shalom. Shalom means “peace” in English, but in Hebrew it means so much more. True biblical shalom means an inward sense of completeness or wholeness. Although it can refer to an absence of war or conflict, it most often refers to an inner completeness, tranquility, and the idea of making something whole. This wholeness refers to an overall sense of fullness and completeness in mind, body, and soul. Not just the absence of conflict, it refers to the presence of connection and completion.

We are called to follow Jesus’ example, to be gentle and humble in heart. But to understand and pursue humility, we must understand pride, and recognize how easy it is to fall into prideful thoughts and actions. Part of the problem with pride is that it is easy to see in OTHER people but hard to see in OURSELVES. It blinds us and gives us a tunnel vision such that we see everything through the lense of “me.” Max Lucado writes about pride, “The self-centered see everything through self. Their motto? ‘It’s all about me!’ The flight schedule, the traffic, the dress styles, the worship styles, the weather, the work—everything is filtered through the mini-ME in the eye.”**In what ways does pride affect your view of the world, of your circumstances, or of the people around you?

**The foolish are the ones who don’t know the Lord. When Jesus returns, many who have considered themselves to be children of God will be shown not to be. The foolish young women were unable to borrow oil from the wise, and so it will be at the end of time. No one will be justified because they attended church. None will be justified because their mother, father, spouse or child had a relationship with Christ. Today’s parable will highlight a problem that is applicable to all of us when we assume that because we have served or walked with the Lord faithfully for years we deserve anything from Him.
It’s easy to forget that God owes us nothing, and in fact, without His generous love and grace, we would have nothing - no hope, no future, no salvation. It’s easy to focus on what others have - and what we don’t have - rather than on what God has generously given us.

In today’s reading, an expert of the law asks Jesus the question: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” This very important question isn’t just answered BY Jesus. It’s answered THROUGH Jesus. Jesus came to bring eternal life through grace, and it’s in this new life that we are enabled to have real love toward God and others. It’s in this new life that we are given the strength and power to live a life of true love for God and true love for our neighbors. Disciples of Jesus don’t just listen to Him; they do what He says. Matthew 7:21:
“Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord!” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven.” Following Jesus doesn’t simply mean doing more good things. It means abiding so closely in Him that our good deeds are simply evidence that God is working in our lives and in our hearts.

When we are not living with our minds controlled by the Spirit, we fall into sin. All of us have sinned, and all of us will continue to sin on this side of eternity. The Bible clearly states that God forgives our sins, but we often struggle to live in the reality of that forgiveness. The practice of confession is necessary to our spiritual growth - not because God needs it; our forgiveness isn’t given because of our confession. But rather, confession will help us to become the changed and transformed people we long to be.

Jesus calls His followers to pursue one thing in life. He calls us to seek His kingdom and His righteousness above all else. When we do that, we are enabled to allow the pursuit of Him - of knowing Him, loving Him, and seeking His kingdom - to dominate our thoughts, actions, and words.
But most of us have divided loyalties. We seek the Lord one moment, but seek our own desires the next. While we want to do one thing, we say or do the opposite. This double-mindedness prevents us from living the life we want to live.

The process of becoming children of God that shine in this world must involve our will, our heart, and our actions. It’s a matter of allowing our hearts to be changed. One of the great spiritual practices in serving and loving others humbly is doing so secretly.**When we allow ourselves to serve others in love without the need for recognition, we give ourselves the freedom from needing to be noticed and approved by others. We gain freedom from our need to impress others and constantly seek approval from others. Think about some of your current opportunities to be used by God in secret. How can you love and serve others without needing to be noticed?

**Jesus doesn‘t call us to simply be his students, to study and learn about Him and His teachings. He calls us to be His disciples. Both are interested in learning from the teacher; however, disciples learn for the sake of obedience. They learn in order to take action. That’s why Jesus regularly warned people to be conscious of their fruit.

In the place of pride, Jesus invites us to live a life of humility. Humility isn’t about convincing ourselves or others that we are less. It’s not about trying to make yourself nothing, insignificant or unimportant. Humility is the freedom to stop pretending to be what we are not. It’s the freedom to accept the person God has created us to be. Humility isn’t thinking less about yourself; it's about thinking of yourself less**.
